D. Jackson Leigh grew up barefoot and happy, swimming in farm ponds and riding rude ponies in rural south Georgia. Her love of reading was nurtured early on by her grandmother, an English teacher who patiently taught her to work New York Times crossword puzzles in the daily paper, and by her mother who stretched the slim family budget to bring home grocery store copies of Trixie Belden mysteries and Bobbsey Twins adventures that Jackson would sit up all night reading.

It was her passion for writing led her quite accidentally to a career in journalism and, ultimately, North Carolina where she lives with her small pack of three terror, uh, terriers.

Unbridled by D. Jackson Leigh is a steamy contemporary romance with hints of erotica and a solid mystery. I enjoyed this book in spite of a few minor flaws to the story.

Lauren Everhart is an accomplished mystery writer who feels she is finally at the point where she has complete control of her life, both professionally and personally. Then she meets Marsh Langston, the owner of a horse ranch where her niece is taking riding lessons. Lauren has an almost instant and very strong sexual attraction to Marsh. She is also intrigued by the mystery surrounding Marsh’s former career in equestrian show jumping, and how that career ended so suddenly.

We see the story through the eyes of Lauren in first person POV. This works well in the story. The mystery in the tale is intriguing and well written. Actually, I think the “who-done-it” is one of my favorite parts of the novel.

I connected with Marsh quickly, especially as I learned more about her history. I had more trouble with Lauren. At the beginning of the novel she presents as a very controlling person and somewhat of a player with a new conquest at every book signing. Then she meets Marsh and suddenly we see her more as a submissive. Her attraction to Marsh also bordered on obsessive at first. Both things felt very inconsistent with the Lauren at the beginning of the book. I came to see that her family history and how she was raised had something to do with this. Perhaps if we had seen some examples of her childhood, it might have been easier to understand her actions. I normally dislike flashbacks, but one or two here might have helped the reader understand Lauren’s behavior better and more quickly.

Other than taking a while to understand and connect with Lauren, I really did enjoy this book. It has a great erotic romance, an interesting mystery, and a very satisfying ending. I’m glad I read this novel, and will be looking for more from this author.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for an honest review.

I feel like the blurb is extremely misleading on this one. I also wouldn't qualify this book as a romance, for me, it veers more towards erotica.

Told in first-person POV of Lauren, a very successful author with control issues this book never picks up its stride for me. It's stuck in a constant loop of want. Lauren wants Marsh, the handsome former equestrian jumping champion turned instructor. The secondary characters from Marsh's side tell us their "relationship" is special for her, but we don't really get to see a lot of Marsh outside of the sexual interactions. The secondary characters also explain, sorta, about her trust issues. So we have a main with control issues and one with trust issues, neither character is very likable and their relationship isn't one if you'd ask me. It's all based on lust. Somewhere around the 50% mark lots of secondary characters are introduced at once and I kept losing track of who is who. The break up with the slight mystery that is involved is just so utterly boring and predictable I just don't have any other words for it.

If you are looking for a lesbian "romance" with some kink, no character development, and an endless loop of one character telling you how much she lusts for the other, go read this. If this isn't something you are looking for, stay away from it. This book would have been a DNF if it weren't an ARC read for me, this is just not something I enjoy reading. I guess there is something in here for other people based on other reviews, so please check those.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

I did enjoy this read but there were a few things that pulled me back from giving a straight 4 star or higher review which I’ll explain as I go along. There are subjects some readers might not like: injury to and death of animals, discussions of abusive/controlling relationships, grooming of a minor, and one scene with some anal play.

I was initially drawn to the book by the cover – I loved the contrast of black and white with red highlights; and who can resist a set of legs in riding boots regardless of whether there is a riding crop involved or not? Then I read the blurb and thought “bingo”, an excellent power dynamic – a woman who does not want to give up control but secretly wants to, matched with a woman who needs to be in control. I looked forward to the reasoning behind it all and was intrigued. I got through the book in two sittings. It would have been one had I not needed to go to sleep.

We have Lauren, a relatively successful mystery writer who has lived much of her life being controlled by men. She now refuses to hand over control to anyone – however, she harbours a secret desire to be dominated in the bedroom. She is internally conflicted by these emotions.
And then we have Marsh, a once Olympic hopeful on the US show jumping team and well known amid the highly rated circuits in the US and international horse dealing. She is control anthropomorphised. Yet something horrible lurks in her past.

The two women are drawn to each other, and Lauren is doubly enamoured because of the mystery surrounding why Marsh pulled back from competing and now teaches. She needs a story line for her next novel and is determined to discover what Marsh’s mystery is while pursuing her as she is in turn pursued.

Unfortunately, Lauren pokes her nose into the wrong place despite warnings from a close friend of Marsh’s. Horror, betrayal, and emotional grief ensue. The only way for Lauren to fix things is to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding Marsh’s past and hope for forgiveness.

All that sounds awesome. My problem was I did not like Lauren very much. Her internal conflict did not make sense to me. I felt like she had the dynamic within a dom/sub relationship backwards. Despite common misconceptions, it’s the sub who has ultimate power and control, not the dom, so I did not get why Lauren would fight against this part of her sexual desire. She also lies by omission and betrays Marsh’s trust essentially for her own gain with little thought about it until she gets hurt when Marsh finds out. She’s also completely oblivious to a clear warning sign from Jules even when we’ve been told that as a writer she studies people and their behaviours so is pretty insightful etc. It just felt a bit off to me. I could see what the author was trying to say, but I didn’t believe it.

The writing style was good. There were only a few things that jumped out at me: an obvious typo on p. 19, a subject/verb confusion on p.48, some rather convenient items and knowledge popping up to aid the situation on p.88/90. There were a couple of time jumps. The one towards the end of the book made it feel like things were being wrapped up a little too quickly, but that is just my opinion.

Overall, I enjoyed the read. I liked Marsh as a character and her verbal sparring and innuendo with Lauren. I laughed a few times and was on the edge of my seat at others. I also liked the fact there was a mystery to solve. I figured out the who relatively soon but not the how or the why until it was revealed. The secondary characters were used well to flesh out and solve the mystery. The intimate scenes were quite hot and almost erotica in places. I did cringe at the anal play, not because it was anal, but because Marsh pretty much just dives right in there with someone who appears to have never done it before (not recommended), and then uses what sounds like a vibrator…I hope it was one designed specifically for anal play - a trip to the ER because of slippery fingers would not be fun.

While I did like the book and I’m glad I spent the extra money on the print version, I feel it could have been tightened up a bit with another quick edit and some clarification. The things that made me go, ‘hang on a minute…’ might simply be me being overly critical due to my own experiences in this instance (not that I’ve ever sent anyone to the ER!). I will read more by this author.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.

Lauren is mystery writer who starting to get a break with her writing she didn’t have a easy life she had to fight to get where she at.

Marsh is a riding instructor who meets Lauren through Lauren niece when she takes her for her lessons. Lauren is immediately intrigue by the aloof instructor not only in a romantic way but also professionally when she realizes there more to Marsh then meets the eye.

Lauren and Marsh have great chemistry and the dynamic between was wonderful they both learn that sometimes it’s okay to give up control and sometimes to give it.

I was browsing the LGBTQIA section on NetGalley a while ago and the second I saw this (a sapphic books with riders, yay!) I knew I needed to read it. So, a huge thank you to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the chance to read this ARC and provide my thoughts about it!

On NetGalley this is marketed as romance, which I was fully aware of when I started it. However, I wasn’t prepared for how explicit it was going to be. I personally wasn’t a fan of the sex scenes, but that’s because I’m not a fan of them in general. Other people will probably love those bits though!

My absolute favourite thing about this book was Lauren’s “author brain”. Sometimes I feel meh about reading about authors and readers, but this was a refreshing take on it. The moments where she started thinking “Hm, if I was writing this scene, what would I do?”, and the way she got carried away with the Marsh “case” - loved it!
However, I have some issues with a couple of comments in the book.

1. Jules has an androgynous look, and when Lauren first meets her she feels the need to “determine” her gender. She switches between using he and she pronouns in her head for a moment, until she decides that Jules must be a girl and go by she/her pronouns without any explanation.

2. In chapter 8 when they’re at the vet Lauren makes a comment to herself about BDSM. It felt very out of place.

3. When describing Dorine, a black woman, the phrasing is a bit odd. In chapter 20 she is described as “An African American”, which sounds very strange in its context. Now, since I’m Swedish, English isn’t my first language (just want to point that out) but the phrasing still caught me off guard.

4. Kate makes a comment about Maggie being mentally ill in chapter 23, as if that explains why she did what she did. This feeds into the stigma surrounding mental illness, that it’s something “evil” and makes you a bad person (which isn’t true). It was an unnecessary comment.

5. Not a specific comment, but still: as someone who loves horses and has ridden (in the past) for over 10 years, I was a bit uncomfortable at how aroused Lauren was by Marsh during riding lessons. Especially during her niece’s, where there were children present.

Let’s end this on a more positive note!

I loved how it weaved mystery and romance together. The mystery was genuinely interesting, and I wish there would’ve been more of it in the book. I also found the topic of control and letting go interesting, and how it connected to both of their pasts (also that they are both aware of their issues and actively try to get better).

2.5 stars rounded down. Not precisely my thing, but I’m certain that a lot of people are going to love it!

An exciting mystery!

Mystery writer Lauren is inspired by the story of champion horse rider, her riding instructor Marsh. Instantly attracted to one another, both Lauren and Marsh know they aren’t one for commitment but exploring and experiencing one another almost exclusively is something they are very interested in, until Lauren uses Marsh’s story loosely for her next book. Determined to prove her commitment to Marsh and proving her innocence, Lauren sets out to make everything right and win back the captivating, hurt, woman who she has unexpectedly fallen in love with.

A mystery of a mystery of a mystery with erotic edge and such deep emotions. This was just amazingly sexy, a touch scandalous and very unexpected. I enjoyed the first chapter and thought I knew how the story might play out but I had no idea what was coming, which was so much better than I’d initially expected. This is the first story I have read by D. Jackson Leigh and it certainly won’t be the last. The story was engaging, twists and turns throughout, with that edge that took it across multiple genres.

I loved that Marsh and Lauren were laid bare, they didn’t hide anything or pretend to be something they weren’t and yet despite all they knew about one another, they still ended up falling for one another, even if one of them tried to hold back. I didn’t expect anything that happened between Marsh and Lauren, nor the secrets revealed from the past or plans for the future. Every little bit of the book was a sweet surprise just waiting, just like little clues in a mystery.

Again, even though the story isn’t a pure mystery, there were scattered clues and I missed every single one like I usually do, so was uncertain who to trust, who to believe and clueless to know what the outcome was going to be when Lauren went deeper into a mystery story than any writer should ever had to. (I think she found it all very exciting though!)

A hot, steamy, erotic romance mystery with edge, exciting twists and turns, great characters and an unforgettable story that I was completely invested in. It was difficult to put the book down and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience of reading it!

2.5 stars. Lauren Everhart is a mystery writer who has writer's block for her next story. She needs to keep writing to keep her fame as a writer. After going with a niece to horse back riding lessons with Marsh, she cannot get Marsh out of her head. She takes riding lessons herself to get closer to Marsh and try to win her over. Lauren seems to be falling harder for Marsh than she thought she would. Lauren finds a new story for her books, one that involves a horse murder that Marsh seemed to be involved in. This murder ended Marsh's olympic career.

I struggled through this one. I did not really enjoy the mystery with the horse murder, it was not really that surprising about who did it or what had been happening. The whole story felt a bit convoluted to me. I liked the premise of the book, and thought it would interesting, but just from the beginning I thought it was a weak excuse to get the characters together. I did not like the predatory behavior that seemed to be occurring. This book was fine if you like the author, but I would not really recommend it.

This book started off strong and initially I was captivated by Lauren and her infatuation with Marsh. The dynamics between the two initially were quite interesting and I was enjoying the story. Unfortunately, the story shifted and I found myself a little puzzled by the shift in the relationship dynamics as well as the storyline. I wasn't as taken with the second half of the novel, as it felt as though the characters and their arc changed drastically from what we started with.

All in all, an interesting premise with some very steamy scenes. I think this just wasn't what I was expecting from the blurb or the start of the novel.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

Unbridled took me on a wild ride. I can say I overall enjoyed the ride but even though this was classified as erotica/romance, I would think this drifted more toward mystery then erotica then romance. The romance is third because I really didn't feel like the mains got to know each other well. Lauren was more interested in having a sexual relationship with Marsh. They do talk some and share some things but nothing that would make me feel like they had a deep love connection. The mystery comes in because Lauren is trying to figure out why Marsh is no longer in the Equestrian show circuit. She dives and dives and eventually with the help of the supporting casts she is able to get to the bottom of everything. The mystery portion is what kept me reading and did not disappoint. That is the main reason I am giving this 4 stars.

How to rate this book? The truth is that when I began to read it, it gave me a feeling of something that finally was not. Because one of its protagonists Lauren, is a mystery novel writer who at first gives an image of a woman eater a bit strong, in one of the first scenes she hooks up with a reader who attends the signing of her latest book. And the sex scene is a bit strong, erotic style, not porn. So I thought, well this will be like this.

But then the other protagonist appears, Marsh, a former Olympic competitor in equestrian sports, is haughty and unapproachable and Lauren asks for private riding lessons with her. From that moment Lauren goes from women eater to submissive, with some sexual scene around them, but still in no case is sex the common thread.

Then the mystery plot comes up again, because Lauren is a writer who can't help but be interested in why Marsh gave up her equestrian career. That doesn't make the story a mystery per se, either. But what has caught my attention the most is, how can these women ride horses, with all those side activities in the bedroom? Highly inconceivable really. Just thinking about it hurts.

Regardless, the story is good enough to overlook some of its flaws and I liked it overall.

Publisher Bold Strokes Books was kind enough to provide me with an advanced reading copy via Netgalley for my honest review

Well that was exciting. It’s listed as a Romance but I would definitely say Erotic Romance, at the very least, with a side of who-dunnit intrigue.

The first half is definitely erotic: seriously hot sub/dom sex scenes while we skitter around in the decidedly lascivious mind of the MC, author Lauren Everhart. As her feelings for former Olympic horsewoman Marsh develop, we move into romance, but a romance apparently doomed by Lauren’s obviously flawed decision to use the story of Marsh’s downfall as the centre of her next plotline. When the intensely private March inevitably finds out and cuts her off Lauren determines to find out ‘who dunnit’ to free Marsh of the rumour and suspicion. Her investigation leads to uncovering a nasty narcissistic psychopath manipulating them all… at which point we return to the romance and erotica.

Thoroughly enjoyable if a little unexpected and definitely the cause of a few cold showers. Lauren and March are intriguing characters, not particularly deep but Marsh, in particular is a complex character and both are dominated (ha!) by their pasts. As Always Ms Jackson-Leigh’s love of horses and knowledge of the equestrian world shines through.

Nice storyline but unengaging storytelling

I really wanted to like this but the writing was unfortunately not great. An interesting storyline and love the added dash of mystery and kink but I got so sick of her "writers brain" and a lot of useless repetition or spelling out of stuff that was easily understood. Promising story and characters but could have used better editing.

Lauren, a famous writer who could have any woman she wanted set her sights on Marsh, her niece’s riding instructor. What followed was quite a steamy ride. There was a lot going on in this book but I found that big plot items weren’t fleshed out enough. First being Lauren’s control issues stemming from her past. These issues were brought up several times but the reader never really got to understand all of the ins and outs. Then there was Marsh’s past with Maggie, I found that to be quite glossed over at the end. There is a bit of a mystery thrown in for good measure. Overall this was a good read but I felt it needed a bit more.

Blades of Bluegrass was one of my favorite books of 2020, so I've been anxiously awaiting this book.

Unbridled is really unlike any other book I've ever read. It's a romance, sure, but because of the main characters it feels like more. Lauren is a mainstream mystery author, so a bit of a celebrity, and Marsh is a former Olympic-caliber equestrian, so there's also a sports theme. While watching her niece take lessons from Marsh, Lauren becomes smitten and decides to take lessons herself in order to get closer. She learns about an incident that happened years ago which caused Marsh to stop riding and also called her integrity into question. Unraveling that mystery is the heart of the story, and it is indeed a page turner.

The cover art is gorgeous, the characters are fascinating, the story is engaging, and the sex is hot. Highly recommend.

Hot read. You will never hear the words "posting a trot" the same again!! Set loosely in the Cherokee Falls world, but absolutely could be a stand-alone. A writer looking for inspiration - and a safe place to give up control. A horse rider/trainer looking to avoid entanglement at all cost - but secretly yearning for someone she can trust.

I was very interested when I saw this book on Netgalley. I have previously read a book by D. Jackson Leigh and I remember really enjoying it. Since this book had an interesting premise, I decided to read another book by this author.

Disclaimer: I received this book through Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books in exchange for a fair, honest review.

Lauren has had to fight to get control of her personal and professional life. She’s a mystery writer who recently had a bit of a break. She’s taking a break and bringing her niece to horseback-riding lessons when she meets Marsh. Marsh is the instructor and Lauren is very attracted to her. Marsh agrees to take Lauren on as a student, but first she has to prove that she’s good enough. When Lauren realizes that Marsh has a demon in her past, she decides to dig deeper into the situation in hopes of finding out more about Marsh and maybe finding a new inspiration for her book.

I absolutely loved this book. Lauren and Marsh were interesting characters who had a nice dynamic with each other. They fed off of each other to make situations, erotic and not, very interesting. Lauren has issues with control that stem from when she was younger (kind of) and Marsh has issues that stem from an incident that occurred a few years prior. Marsh is determined not to start anything resembling a relationship with Lauren and Lauren, despite her worries, is determined to have Marsh.

There is a mystery to this book that I didn’t expect. It’s not mentioned in the summary, so I wasn’t quite sure what to think of it. I took some time to think about it and I found that I actually really enjoyed it. I thought it added a nice depth and backstory to Marsh and allowed for Lauren to show her attachment and dedication to Marsh. It worked really well in the story and, for the most part, never felt forced.

I will freely admit that one of my favorites things about this book is the sex scenes and erotic intimacy. At first, I didn’t expect to find this book as hot as I did, but the book kind of throws you straight into an 18+ rating. After a minute to adjust, I found that it was fun especially when Lauren and Marsh meet and grow closer. The intimacy between them felt honest so that the relationship that formed was hot and involved several nice sex scenes.

I thought this book was excellent. It had very nice characters, good sex scenes, and sweet and tender moments that allowed the two characters to form a connection. I plan on reading this book again and I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a good read with a happy ending.

Lauren Everhart is a successful mystery thriller writer. She takes her visiting niece for horse back riding lessons at a local stable and meets Marsh Langston. Lauren is instantly infatuated with the aloof and in control Marsh and she signs up for private riding lessons. Marsh has an aura of mystery. As their attraction grows Lauren learns of a scandal in Marsh's past. It all becomes an inspiration for the next Everhart mystery.

I found this book very interesting to read. Another author could take the basic storyline and turn it into typical contemporary romance. Instead Leigh writes everything tightly from Lauren's POV. Her issues with control bring a darker edge or feel to the story. And the brooding overtones combining with a slightly predictable mystery turns it into a page tuner. I couldn't sleep till I finished the book. And if you are a horse person (I'm not) you will enjoy it on a whole other level.

I might have personally preferred a lighter book but the story is compelling. The heat factor is high. It takes a while to warm up and like both MC's. I did like that the characters themselves are self aware of their issues with trust and control. I was frustrated, much like Lauren, at the slowness in getting to know the real Marsh. (3.5 stars) Thank you to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books, Inc. for an ARC ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Turn up the AC and grab a cold drink before you pick up the sizzler that is Unbridled.

Best selling author Lauren Everhart is used to being in control, but when she meets Marsh she discovers being submissive has its perks. What follows is a scintillating dom/sub romance, a foray into the mind of the writer, and a high stakes equestrian world whodunnit all wrapped up in one.

A couple of slip ups aside, the author paints a fairly accurate picture of the equestrian world. In many ways, the world of tight breeches and leather is the perfect setting for a power play novel. What did rub me the wrong way, was the perpetuation of the myth that horseback riding is sexually stimulating. Men always use that as an excuse to make lewd comments to female equestrians, so to find it here was disappointing.

Jackson D. Leigh is a master at building sexual suspense. The chemistry and power play between the two protagonists was absolutely smoking. I’m surprised my kindle didn’t actually catch on fire! Which begs the question; why is this marketed as romance? To me this is erotica and a not-so-vanilla one at that. If you’re looking for books to read at work, this might not be the one, but if you want something that leaves you a little breathless, look no further.

Unbridled - D. Jackson Leigh

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books and I am leaving this review voluntarily

After a hard-fought battle to take control of her personal and professional life, mystery writer Lauren Everhart’s star is finally rising. She vows never to give up control of anything in her life until she meets her niece’s sexy horseback-riding instructor and signs up for her own private lessons, and more.
Riding top horses on the show jumping circuit and igniting a woman’s desire are simply games of power, and Marsh Langston is a master player. Only this time, the flame she fans with Lauren Everhart burns too hot and so quickly it threatens to sear through Marsh's impenetrable control.

This book was categorised as a romance on NetGalley, personally I would classify this as more of an erotica as there are many very explicit descriptions. Lauren and Marsh have great chemistry and there is a wonderfully written dynamic between the pair.

There is a mystery running throughout this book in addition to the erotic scenes which breaks up the story nicely. Overall I thought this was a throughly enjoyable read and I loved the attention to detail, especially during Lauren’s lessons.

This started out as perhaps an ordinary romance but then had additional elements. At first, I really didn’t like the protagonist, Lauren. She seemed so self-absorbed and all about her own sexual needs, with a kind of love them and leave them attitude. Then she met Marsh, the enigmatic woman who teaches riding lessons. To get close to her, Lauren decides to take riding lessons from her which doesn’t quite turn out how Lauren expected.

There’s a lot of dominance and power scenes in this story, whether it’s related to riding lessons or sexual encounters which were numerous and steamy. Both women apparently are used to being in control so something has to give. While this interplay is going on, we get introduced to lots of other characters and learn about an incident from the past. There are so many characters, I got confused about who was who and why that person accompanied Lauren somewhere instead of another character. Unraveling the incident from the past was intriguing. I enjoyed Lauren’s sleuthing and putting together the clues. Leigh slowly revealed enough of Lauren’s thoughts and feelings to make me feel more sympathetic to her, but I felt like Marsh was the more interesting character and would have liked more of her.

When mystery writer Lauren Everhart meets riding instructor Marsh Langston their chemistry is immediate. But under the fog of lust, Lauren can't help digging into Marsh's past, which may put their future in jeopardy.

I usually really enjoy Leigh's books, however this one was a bit hard to get into. While the writing was the same excellent quality and the characters were still strong, I found the plot a bit too erratic. Rather than a slow burn the book begins more in the style of an erotica, which was unexpected for this author, so it took me a little longer to settle into the pacing and plot of the book. Not the authors fault my expectations were wrong so once I got past that I enjoyed the well written sizzling chemistry between the two leading ladies. The rest of the plot was a little on the weaker side, looking into the mystery of Marsh's past, and lacked some development to really make us care about the characters rather than just the chemistry. If you're looking for a sexy well-written book then you'll definitely enjoy this one.

I wanted to like this book more as I do like the writing of D Jackson Leigh but I just didn’t warm to it. I’m not sure if its the first person narrative which only gives us “one side of the story”, or the sexual drive of the lead character Lauren, which is at times unsettling, but I think in the end it’s because I just didn't much like her. Normally this doesn’t bother me but when the book is first person and you spend all your time in her head, it does become a bit draining.

The book is well plotted and I did like Marsh and the sex scenes and “control” issues were well written; there is no doubt Ms Jackson Leigh is an excellent writer. In this instance the narrative just didn’t capture me. I think It would have been better for me if the book was normal third person with insight into both characters but then that might have made it more difficult to conceal Marsh’s issues.

All in all not one of my favourite books by this author but I will continue to read her work.

“You’re the first she’s looked at and seen. She seems strong, but she’s so fragile.”

When mystery writer Lauren Everhart meets horseback riding instructor Marsh Langston, she feels immediately drawn to her. Marsh is a hard woman to get close to, but Lauren can’t seem to walk away from this private woman, who takes control in all things.

This book had a lot of potential. Admittedly I don’t read a lot of lesbian romance, but that isn’t an issue for me. I think the issue I had was that we are supposed to believe in this intense love between Lauren and Marsh, when honestly it seems that Lauren’s main focus through out the entire book is on sex. Even at book signings or horse riding events it’s her focus. It made Lauren seem like a very flat and almost unlikeable character to me. Marsh on the other hand fascinated me. She was so intense and was very passionate about horses, her life, and seemed to have this incredible bond with her bother and his husband. I wish more of the book could have been about her. I give this book 2 stars.

Lauren is an accomplished writer and is now in between books. Her sisters fears she's in a rut and asks her to watch her daughter for a few weeks. Soon Lauren is running out of things to keep the young girl occupied. A friend recommends riding lessons at a near by stable.
Marsh Langston is a horse rider, trainer, former Olympic hopeful and own of the stables.
Lauren has become smitten with Marsh and asks her for private riding lessons in order to spend more time with her.
Marsh is a very private person and is not trusting of many people and is slow to warm up to Lauren.
As the two finally come to a point where they are comfortable and spending time together Lauren learns that Marsh was previously accused of animal cruelty. This doesn't seem possible to Lauren so she begins to dig deeper. She should watch who she trusts because one person she questions is about to ruin her relationship with Marsh.

NB: free copy received for honest review

This is a somewhat kinky lesbian romance about two women with control and trust issues. It's entirely told from the perspective of only one of those women (Lauren, rather than Marsh), which perhaps contributed to my finding the emotional aspect of their relationship - as opposed to the sexual element, which was very clear - a little unconvincing. Secondary characters tell us several times that that this relationship is special for Marsh, but we don't see much from Marsh herself to show this specialness.

There book features a mystery sub-plot that is key to both the inevitable temporary break-up and their eventual happy reunion. I thought that the resolution of this mystery was rather too pat and easy, personally: it's hard to imagine it never got solved before this.

If escapist lesbian romance with some blindfolds and mild dominance games is your kind of thing, it should scratch the itch just fine, but it's competent rather than a classic.

I liked that this book was written in first person. I prefer first person POV from the two main characters over third person. This book was only first person from, one character and I would have liked to have known what the other character was thinking. I found the main character slightly annoying and the romance pacing just felt off. The book was pretty steamy and the mystery was interesting. But, the pacing, all the pacing felt just a little bit off. From the romance to the mystery. The pacing wasn’t so off that I lost interest in the book. I was intrigued and wanted to get to the bottom of everything I just think some parts could have been shaved in areas and added to other to make the story feel more cohesive. I’m a fan of this author but this wasn’t a favorite of mine.

I don’t think I’m the target audience (the kink is way too undernegotiated for me to relax into the story lmao, it has me stressed) but I can see the general idea of the story and recommend it to people who want to read a story with stronger D/s elements than is typical (the play extends outside the bedroom to regular life).
It’s told exclusively from the submissive character’s POV, which is rather common with bdsm romances, but the reason I find it particularly difficult to enjoy in this circumstance is that the situation feels very unsafe due to the love interest being a complete mystery and the two of them engaging in power play without setting boundaries.
Also, CW for the MC having unresolved issues related to control leading to her having a conflicted relationship with submission.

Not sure how to rate this book but I guess I need to start saying that the book is told in first person and that we get Lauren’s point of view. I can honestly say that I have never read anyone like her and despite that she isn’t a likeable character I ended up loving her.

I don’t want to give anything away but I’m still gobsmacked at her first telephone conversation with Marsh, do people do that? Such a flawed character.

Loved the setting and learning about horse. The romance felt a bit awkward for me but I couldn’t put the book down and I really enjoyed it.

Lauren Everhart, mystery writer, finds herself lusting after her niece's riding instructor so strategically signs up for riding lessons for herself.  Marsh Langston, was a show jumping champion but now only teaches students to ride. Mystery surrounds Marsh's past and Lauren finds herself determined to find out.
This book waxed and waned between interesting and just ok for me. I did struggle with the character of Lauren and found her somewhat arrogant and immature at times but Marsh was solid as the aloof dominant character.  There was a lot of power play and a bit of BDSM that readers should be aware of although it's not hard core. This was an ok read.

This was my first time reading a book from this author, but it won't be the last. I loved learning about the different aspects of horseback riding and dressage. The relationships between the characters were really kind of out there and there was quite a bit of drama throughout this book. I thought the mystery surrounding Marsh, Maggie and Lauren was very well done and kept me guessing till the very end. The relationship between Marsh and Lauren was pretty hot, and steamy. The supporting characters helped push the story along and the info on horses was very interesting. I look forward to what's next from this author and would recommend this to my friends and family.
