Penny and the Little Lost Puppy is such an adorable book. Penny has just moved into a new home with her dad and has left her friends behind. She is sad as she feels all alone.
Whilst sitting in her new garden a little dog arrives and the two have lots of fun together, when it's time to go in, Penny hopes the dog will come back tomorrow but it doesn't arrive so she and her dad go looking for it and Penny makes a new friend.
I loved this book. The storyline is so beautiful, it shows children who are moving house or have just moved that they can make new friends. It is highly illustrated with such gorgeous full-page drawing and Penny and the dog are so sweet.
This would make a lovely read whether at home or a class read at school. It is a gorgeous book that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Gelukkig komt alles goed!
Penny has moved house and doesn’t like her new home. She misses her friends and is lonely. Her dad tells her to unpack her old things, that will make her feel better, but it doesn’t. Then he tells her to go play near an apple tree in the garden, but it doesn’t cheer Penny up either. Penny is sad, until she meets a dog who wanders into her garden, but after spending a day with her new best friend, will he come back tomorrow? ‘Penny and the Lost Puppy’ is bigger than A4 in size and is filled with thick matt pages of text and some really lovely and detailed illustrations.
This story is quite simple but so lovely. Penny is very sad and lonely after moving home, having no friends to play with. While she sits under a tree in her garden, a puppy suddenly appears in her garden and begins playing with Penny. Soon Penny isn’t sad anymore, having made friends with the puppy, but the next day when Penny wakes up, the puppy is nowhere to be seen, making Penny sad again. I like what happens in the story and how relatable Penny’s situation of being lonely after moving home is. Penny’s father eventually finds out why Penny is sad and wants to help her find the puppy, so she and her dad start asking around town to see if anyone has seen that particular pup.
The illustrations are beautiful and really add to this story, and I love how detailed some of them are. I’ve been a fan of Emily Sutton’s illustrations style for some time now, the level of detail and colour she puts into each image is wonderful, and I love certain scenes in this book which make you want to look at them all day, like the image of the park where there are so many different dogs and people to look at. Each illustration is so colourful and fun, and even those two images at the front and back of the book which show the night and day of the area Penny moves to is fun to look at for a long time and compare the two.
The story ends well with Penny eventually finding herself no longer lonely and making new friends. I like the way this happens and the fun sort of twist at the end that makes you smile when she discovers something about the dog. Overall this is a really nice book and one which I’m sure lots of children will enjoy reading and looking at again and again. The story itself is good, but it’s the illustrations that really shine here and they are so interesting and detailed that I’m sure many children and adults will enjoy looking at them for a long time. -Thanks to Walker Books for a free copy.
A heartwarming tale of a little girl befriending a dog who subsequently vanishes - it all turns out okay in the end, but the journey to get there showcases the importance of the kindness of strangers and those little moments which turn in to concrete friendships and experiences throughout our lives.
The illustrations are fun, the characters sweet and the message definitely packs a punch. There is something missing - I think the story is incredibly rushed and would have been really powerful if some emphasis was placed on the strangers, who had no agenda, offering small comforts during a testing time for the little girl. But otherwise, a fun addition to any shelf.

A nice story about a little girl who moves house. At first she is unhappy about the move but then she meets a little terrier and eventually befriends the boy who lives with him. Beautiful illustrations!
A picture book about moving house. The plot was utterly predictable (i.e. that the dog would be her neighbours) but the story worked and the artwork was lovely (lots of colourful flowers!).
An absolutely gorgeous picture book that you can get lost in with a sweet story.
In this stunning picture book we meet a little girl named Penny who has moved to a new home/new town. She isn’t happy, as expected, her dad tries his best but he just doesn’t seem to understand that she misses her friends so much. I was so happy for her that she found a friend, though I did think it was a bit odd that she thought the dog was just a free dog of his own and that even her dad didn’t comment on it, instead stating that they will look for it. Oh well, a small detail. I did love seeing them head in town and EXCUSE ME, I want to go there. That bakery just looks to YUM. The grocery store overflowing with YUM. The streets looked pretty. That park!
I loved the ending and it just made me have a big smile on my face. I am so happy for Penny!
The illustrations were just WOW. Sometimes, haha yes really, I had to re-read parts of the text because I was just lost in the illustrations. They are vibrant in colours, full of details, and you can just keep looking and keep finding things to see. LOVE it.
Be sure to check out the endpages (at the beginning and the end).
All in all, a beautiful story about that it isn’t easy to move, but when you meet a friend (and also a cute friend) things can get better. With gorgeous illustrations.
