A 3.5. The first half, maybe even 75% of this book, is increasingly tedious backyard scheming and fighting. No villain retains any lesson. They just keep coming and coming, as tenacious as Rottweilers. The FL can’t go one day without someone trying to set her up. Even though I just finished this book, if I get isekai-ed into it as the FL right this moment, I’ll die in 5 pages because there is no way I can keep track of what scheme it is THIS time because there must have been dozens, I can’t keep them straight at all. I also skipped a lot of the villains just monologuing their evil schemes.
What saved this book for me is the romance, which was pretty scarce for a lot of the book. I like that they’re very sweet together, though. In some ways they make me think of Xie Jing Xing and Shen Miao, but only in the ways that they are different, in personalities and how they deal with things. Ning Xueyan is a lot more compliant and willing to be vulnerable and rely on her man, for one. Ao Chenyi is really patient. They’re very cuddly. It’s nothing bad either way, just different flavors. One is hug-hug-kiss and one is slap-slap-kiss. lol It’s the nice amount of romance at the end that managed to round up this book to a 4 for me.

Only writing this "review" 2/19/24... but the fact that I remember a lot of this is a good sign.
I think someone said it was kinda like a "sweeter" Malicious Empress based on ML and FL ... which I can see - he's cuddly from go. But JFC it was RELENTLESS- RE-LENT-LESS schemes againsT FL from go like goddamn do these fucking people not ever take a fucking goddamn break.
It was also ... actually I wouldn't even say "too long" cuz it was always interesting, which is impressive cuz there are like fifty trillion chapters, but the relentless schemes against her did get exhausting.
[There are unintelligible words below cuz I jot down thoughts on my phone while reading and DYAC hates me... I tried to fix some but some I just really have no idea.]
I felt the extra didn't add much/I wanted more from it.
Wish the distribution " " of the book would've been different - more in the "after" less of the "stupid relentless scheming from family" like ... *sigh* wish FL had been able to have a relationship with her cousin.

C84 the maternal uncle finally visits the manor. A huge plot hole though is how TF FL’s mom became the lesser co-wife when she had the status & nobility & backing & money while Ling was… a butcher’s daughter just wtf.
Oh. Ming was downgraded to co-wife “of her own initiative” - she still shouldn’t have been the lesser one. Mulch FL’s shitty useless dad.
C95 I wonder why she went to find ML. And eee the whip thing. And extra eeee all the people she knows who are around.

This is the first time I've read a Chinese novel this long (and until the end). Before she was reborn, she was also an ancient person, so her growth to be a strong woman flows naturally. (If she was a modern person reborn in an ancient setting, than it is no wonder to be smart. Since she's not, it made the story more interesting). As a reader, I could feel her emotion and understand her position. Our female character's personality on the outside is gentle and proper (as she should, you know, in ancient times), but she could still step on her enemy 'graciously'. I really enjoy this novel, because it truly feels right with their historical/ancient genre. :)

September 5, 2023I read the tapered version and some words in the translation were a bit jarring because they were very suddenly very modern like "what's up?" in the middle of the historical drama. Some of the names were switched by mistake but you could always guess who by the context.

At times the backyard drama and plots were intriguing, other times was lacking ingineosity or sense. The villains were incredibly dumb at times, borderline delusional even, and refused to take responsibility. But what’s certain is that everyone hated the FL and with or without cause they were set to bury her. That felt too forceful, there just to stir more drama. Also, out of all the ‘villains’ I think Ning Qingshan, is the dumbest. I swear, she was like a rabid dog that just won’t let go.

Also, out of all the ‘villains’ I think Ning Qingshan, is the dumbest. I swear, she was like a rabid dog that just won’t let go.
