A Good Memory is Unpardonable

Sometimes the facts matter less than the truth

On their twentieth anniversary of wedded bliss, Elizabeth Darcy persuades her husband to do something entirely out of character. They will each turn to their private journals, then compile their love story to share with the world.

What Fitzwilliam Darcy presumes for a simple recitation of history becomes something completely different when he opens the box of his treasured feelings. Peek over his shoulder as he explores his deepest secrets: from the first day he met his future, as she was marrying another man, to the moment when he finally won her heart.

Strangely enough, however, Elizabeth remembers their story... a little differently. Clever, light-hearted, and saucy as ever, she sets the facts straight and keeps her love on his toes as she tells how she fell for the proud gentleman from Derbyshire.

Who is telling the story as it really happened? Probably neither one, but there is one thing they both agree on: Think on the past only as it gives you pleasure.

Unpardonable  is a sweet Regency variation of approximately 24,000 words. Based on Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, it is appropriate for all audiences.

This little story is positively inspired!

It is a treat to read how Elizabeth and Darcy, now celebrating their twentieth anniversary, relate somewhat different (yet essentially the same) versions of how they came to be happily married. Ms. Clarkston gives them each a distinctive "voice," and the discrepancies between the two accounts are what really make the story fun to read.

The tale itself IS significantly different from canon. Elizabeth Bennet actually becomes a member of the Bingley family, wedded to Charles's older brother, Andrew, before Louisa becomes Mrs. Hurst. It's a short-lived marriage, but it leaves Mrs. Andrew Bingley (Elizabeth) running the Bingley household rather than Caroline. Wonderful family dynamics there! Elizabeth is perfectly content as a widow, having been left well off by her deceased husband, but she is eager to prevent her mother from ruining Jane's chances for an advantageous match.

It was Andrew rather than Charles who was primed to establish the Bingleys in upper society. When Charles decides to lease an estate, he chooses Netherfield (at Elizabeth's suggestion). Finding himself over his head, he begs Darcy's help, and his brother's dear friend complies - largely due to his fascination with Charles's sister-in-law.

The relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth fairly leaps off the pages, both in the present and in their interactions twenty years ago. The story-within-a-story is executed to perfection, as they each sneak peeks at the other's progress and write spirited rebuttals.

It's a story that's so short you can breeze through it in under two hours and so well done that you'll feel completely satisfied. Content is clean.

In reading the author's blurb and the reviews of my friends here, all of whom also received an ARC of this story, I find that there is little I can add. This is a delightful short & very sweet story.

As ODC reach 20 years of marriage Elizabeth suggests and Fitzwilliam agrees to write separate journals about how they met, fell in love and married. They are supposed to do this without reading what the other one has written...you have to smile or even laugh as both find the hiding places of the other's journal and make comments about the "errors" they found noted there. Sometimes it is only as to who won or lost a chess match.

As their memories are shared with us, Elizabeth has married Andrew Bingley and so becomes the Mistress of Netherfield. Fitzwilliam considers Andrew one of his good friends and so not only attends the wedding ceremony but then spends time at Netherfield due to Andrew's death and his younger brother, Charles, needing that guidance we read about in canon as he learns to take over the management of the estate.

Yes, we read about Jane and Charles, Collins and Lady Catherine. However, this charming story is not at all just a retelling of this favorite story. It is a lovely romance as we read of friendship blossoming slowly into love...stolen kisses included.

I highly recommend this short story to all JAFF lovers. I have to add that I love the cover.

I received a copy of this story from the author, as I said, but the review is given freely and with only my own words and opinions written here.

“Remembrance of things past is not necessarily the remembrance of things as they were.” –Marcel Proust

Happy Anniversary to ODC [our dear couple] D&E on their twenty-years of marriage. Elizabeth and Darcy endeavored to chronicle events from their years together by writing their observations in a journal. That could be scary and dangerous at the same time. People often have different perspectives and can see events through a different lens and/or remember them differently. It was fun reading several situations from both viewpoints as each short chapter was from a different angle and viewpoint.

Our author took our P&P couple and added a twist to their storyline. Elizabeth was a widow and related to the Bingley siblings. It was well done and I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure. I highly recommend this quick read. [Proposed launch date: June 30, 2021]

Alix James, the ever talented Nicole Clarkston, has taken Pride & Prejudice variations to new heights!

"Those dry and dusty tomes? I would rather chew wood than force myself to read them. Besides, no one cares who begat whom. They want to know 'how' and 'why'." (quote from the book)

On the twentieth anniversary of their marriage, Elizabeth Darcy persuades her husband to write down for posterity his truths of how they met and she will do the same.

"I do not know how Fitzwilliam will tell his side of the tale, but I daresay he will fail to remember the first time we met." (quote from the book)

We, the reader, are treated to an utterly unique, poignant, funny and beautiful love story that took me completely by surprise. Not the funny, poignant and beautiful bits but the uniqueness of the story. The 'what if' is one I have never seen before, and I was absolutely charmed by it all. I dare not give anything more away!

"Oh, pray do not permit your feathers to be ruffled. As you are here, you may as well make yourself useful." (quote from the book)

The delights of this story were one on top of the other...a game of chess and wits, insults thrown, angry words said and completely different perspectives given. I cannot urge you enough to save a little time in your day on June 30th when this story is set to release. You will be completely charmed. I was.

"If you can overlook my prideful insults, I will do my best to forget your stubborn impudence." (quote from the book)

Did I tell you how much I adore this novella? I can't wait for the paperback to be released for I will be adding it to my library!

I received this as a gift from the author, and I am freely, without any request, leaving my review.

This author has such a gift. Reading Alix James short stories are like the tumbling and babbling of water flowing in a brook. Effortless and refreshing.

ODC after 20 years of marriage have decided to write their memoirs for the family prosperity. Needless to say their views of what happened and how differ somewhat. Not only that, but they have an agreement to not read each other's journal until completed. So there is a dual story of the journey of how they met added with the mischievousness of trying to read the other's words.

This short variation gives us a slightly different take in events, starting with Elizabeth marrying even before meeting Darcy. However she is quite quickly widowed. Following the opening scenes, the rest of the story takes place at Netherfield.

There are several LOL moments, embarrassingly for me as I was on public transportation at the time.

5+* A fabulous read!

But memory ... Think how determinedly it entwines itself around the past! ~ Ronald A. Knox

What a lovely little story of remembrance of the past — and not only as its remembrance gives you pleasure.

Twenty years married and Elizabeth Darcy requires a personal gift for the Darcys’ children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Two journeys will be recorded: her husband’s memory of their courtship and hers.

Truly, a book as lovely as its cover!

Memory is more than a dustbin of time, stuffed with yesterday's trash. Rather, memory is a glorious grab bag of the past from which one can at leisure pluck bittersweet experiences of times gone by and relive them. ~ Hal Boyle

Always a Treat
Once again, Alix James (Nicole Clarkston) never disappoints. In her latest Pride and Prejudice novella, Elizabeth and Darcy are entering their twentieth year of marriage. Elizabeth endeavors to convince Darcy they should write a memoir. His response —

Quote from book: “A memoir? Whatever for?” were his precise words. “Why, to keep for all posterity, so that when our great-grandchildren someday wish to know how we arrived at this point, they will have the pleasure of reading all the particulars.”

Great-grandchildren aside, I’m glad they did (wink, wink). What the world is given is a delightful retelling of how our dear couple met and eventually married. To provide an interesting twist from canon, the author presents a completely different reimagining of the circumstances of their first meeting and the early days of their relationship. In the telling from each of Elizabeth and Darcy’s first-person points of view as they write their memoir, it is clear their memories of events are not always in accord. Attempting sneak peeks into the other’s writing had me grinning.

As are all her books, this one is also extremely well written with interesting perspectives, engaging and often humorous dialogue and excellent character portrayals. I loved and most highly recommend it.

Funny, surprising, endearing

A variation from the very beginning does not let canon of P&P interfere with a good story.

Lizzy needs a husband and goes to Uncle Gardiner to find one and off we go.

The story maybe a only read once for me. Lots of the fun is in the surprises.

This is an adorable story of little pride and little prejudice

It is also a generally OOC plot with lots of OOC characters

The author describes it as epistolary which I take to be letters but in this case is journal entries which are not contemporary

ODC have been wed for 20 years and decide to record their memories of their courtship in a bit of he said / she said narrative

It begins recalling their first meeting and shockingly it is Lizzy’s wedding to Andrew Bingley; Darcy’s friend and Charles Bingley’s older brother

As I always say if Lizzy or Darcy are marrying someone else you know the Grim Reaper is going to be a character in the story

In less than 6 months Andrew goes to the great gentleman’s club in the sky and 20 year old Lizzy is responsible for the Miss Bingleys as Louisa had not yet wed Hurst

We soon learn this was an arranged doomed marriage as Andrew knew he had consumption but hoped he had years rather than months

And soon the Bingleys are ensconced at Netherfield along with Mr Darcy

In this universe Darcy is head over heels in love with the Widow Bingley while she is less certain of her feelings and in a twist Col Fitzwilliam is the nay sayer regarding if Lizzy cares for Darcy

This is one of those short pleasant stories where little is unresolved and everyone lives happily ever after

Oh wow! I enjoyed the novella immensly.
Something to recommend. I would rate higher but unfortunately, only 5 stars is possible.

To warn you guys, it is written in a kind of Journal form. I know there are People who don‘t like that. ☺️ Also, everything what is written is first written by Elizabeth how her memory is from that moment, than Darcy how he remembers it BUT it is not so dull because it really won‘t be written twice. Certainly no copy-paste after each POV. Both are writing a memoir from their first meeting until marriage. (An idea from Elizabeth for the 20th marriage anniversary)

I read on my Kindle, and after 85% it was finished, which was kinda sad. Could be longer, really enjoyed it. The other % was a sample from another book of the same series called „A proper Introduction“ (Read it, really good!)

- Clean Content (mentioning of two or 3 kisses)
- Quick Read with only 74 pages
- Low Angst

This is a short story where, after 20 years of marriage, Darcy and Elizabeth write their courtship memories for their posterity. Since it was decided that they would not read each others words until after both accounts were complete, it was really cute and fun to see the two try and hide their own journals while trying to sneak a peak at the others! Darcy and Elizabeth’s love story was very different here than canon and they meet under completely different circumstances. Due to these changed circumstances, the progression and development of their relationship took a very different course. In this alternative world, Darcy and Elizabeth are in company much more frequently giving them the chance to get to know and understand each other and their characters much sooner. That doesn’t mean that there’s no misunderstandings or prejudices, just that they are worked through faster given their closer proximity and the intimacy that it provides.

Even though the story is set 20 years into the future, we are given no glimpses into what their marriage was like. We aren’t told about their family or children except one reference to a grandchild. This is a time where I would have enjoyed a little more information and a little information would have gone a long way to appease my curious mind. This story focuses only on the courtship period for Darcy and Elizabeth. It does a great job showing how they come to fall and love and marry, and it’s fun to hear it from both sides. With the story being so different from canon, I also would have appreciated a little more back story information on how some of the things that were different came to be. I’m always open to new twists and turns to this beloved story, but I felt I needed a little more information leading up to the start of this story in order to be able to fully embrace the different circumstances. I also would have appreciated a little more time to relish in their HEA. It almost felt to me like it I was missing the last few pages to really provide the satisfactory ending I was expecting. I know endings are hard as there is a fine line between too abrupt of an ending and the never ending ending, and this story leaned a little toward the first. This is a great story, it just felt a little incomplete. I know this is meant to be a short story, but one or two more chapters would have made it much more satisfying.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable read with a good balance of seriousness, humor, and romance. I thought the characters were pretty true to the originals. It was a great way to spend a couple hours!

This is truly a short and satisfying romance for busy readers, as indicated by the author. The story is told in an journal style alternating between Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth Darcy as they remember how they became a couple. Elizabeth's story starts with a different route than cannon, but their interaction and lessons learned is full of pride and prejudice.

I found myself smiling and wishing there was more at the end. It was just brilliant!

This is a short sweet read... we start when darcy and Elizabeth have been married for 20 years and she proposes they write a diary about how their relationship developed. Its a cute read as she sneaks a peek at what he is writing and adds her own commentary. In this story Elizabeth married Andrew Bingley so becomes mistress of Netherfield. She is widowed early on so this leaves her free to have lots of time with Darcy as their friendship grows. This is a lovely story, lots of humor and low angst.

Story began with ODc already married for 20 yeras. They decided to write their story for the future generations to know their tale. Their story deviated from the original as Lizzy was married to Darcy's friend, nope not Mr. Bingley. As with the original, they started off on the wrong foot. Then tragedy happens and the rest of the story.

A great way of doing a flashback in the story. (I didn't suffer a headache and a whiplash going back and forth and thinking am I senile - what year are we talking about?) It was easy to follow and very entertaining as humor and romance were blended in (seems one of author's hallmark).

I highly recommend this enticing Austen variation story.

On their 20th wedding anniversary, Elizabeth Darcy convinces her husband to join her in documenting their love story, each from their own perspective. They will each write in their own private journals, then share their memories.
They each remember events differently and we hear their thoughts and feelings at the time. There is a certain amount of amusing cheating, as each wants to read the latest journal entries.
Who is telling the story as it really happened? Probably neither one, but there is one thing they both agree on: Think only of the past as its remembrance gives you pleasure.

I love Elizabeth as a widow. It gave her much more license to be her arch self. I was amazed at her ability to tolerate Louisa and Caroline as sisters.
Elizabeth and Darcy have a sweet friendship first, then love, which means a much less reserved Darcy
It was great to hear their thoughts

Splendid!

Every book that comes out from this author is like a gift, an assurance that you can look forward to a few hours of pure delight. This particular creation is one of her best, being deliciously playful, humorous, and heartwarming. The premise is brilliant, that of having Elizabeth and Darcy each write their own memoir of their courtship, twenty years after their marriage, and to switch back and forth from his entries to hers.

This is a variation, so the sequence of events is altered from the get-go. The circumstances of their meeting, and most everything thereafter, are given quite significant and interesting twists that make this account fresh and unpredictable. You will fall in love all over again with Darcy and Elizabeth, as they display all of their most beloved quirks and qualities. I only wish the book was longer, so much fun did I have reading it.

Of course, no courtship would be complete without villains and obstacles. Ironically, the recountings of their troubles, each from their own point of view, are some of the more amusing and endearing entries, as they sometimes remember them much differently. Being retold twenty years after the fact, they also are remembered with very little angst, and even more than a little fondness, looked upon as scenes from their lives that tested and forged their bond.

As always with this author, the book is very well written and well edited. I recommend it highly.

I enjoyed the repartee between ODC as well as the format of recounting their history through alternating chapters from each of their perspectives. This Darcy and Elizabeth are particularly bold and piquant (and dare I say a tiny bit devious) in how they relate to each other. Great story for a quick pick-me-up!

Light and relatively low in dramatic tension due to the lack of a true villain, this short novel is a decent read but shows that this Alix James book is no Nicole Clarkston book, so don't expect the same level of energy or entertainment. But if you like your novels short and sweet, by all means, this is for you. This is my first Alix James book, and though I can't make a sweeping comment about all Alix James books, but I have a hunch that's the intention--this is the light version of Nicole's writing.

I won't be providing a synopsis or offering spoilers; instead, this is a technical review designed to show readers the details that would subtly annoy them if not done right, and most reviewers miss out on mentioning these important items.

The concept is a good idea, carried out in alternating points of view to make for a loose plot via journal entries. The style is such that it could have gone on as long as the author chose before closing the story arc, and the author merely needed to show the climax a few chapters ahead of the decided end section. Thus, this book could have been longer, but I believe it's just right given the topic. Otherwise, it could be considered tedious. There's no repetition and delightful themes show up in the journal entries. I did find myself confused in a few places in the book, but that may have just been me, or it may have been a continuity issue. I didn't take the time to analyze it. The pacing is sometimes slow, but in such a short book, it's barely noticeable. The climax is well handled.

Language is that of the Regency, yet rather casual given that it is in journal format. Non-Regency words and phrases found included "wedding breakfast," hostess, "kindred spirit," normally, snorted, "bear hug," bounder, cheeky, and boredom. Authors, pay heed: anything with bore or normal in it is not Regency. This list is slightly longer than the usual amount for a regular sized JAFF novel. I also dislike the use of the non-canon term "hedgerows."

Editing was excellent as no errors other than the above were noted.

The development of the romance and the drama that held it back (the only angst in the book, moderate and not long-winded) were well drawn out and the timing was reasonable. However, the resumption may have been a bit fast for a romance novel and could have been more believable if drawn out slightly longer. It's a difficult balancing act.

It's hard to do too much scene setting in a traditional manner in a journal-based novella, however, this book did not a bad job of putting the reader into the situation in quite a few circumstances, making the story more alive in that respect.

Without a villain, it's hard to develop strong dramatic tension. Because of that, most of the book wasn't that exciting, it was just sweet. I don't related to that type of writing. However, the climax was a good one and offered a nice respite from the humdrum for me.

The cover is pretty but "meh." It could be for any book. In fact, I just reviewed a book by another author with almost the same cover and said pretty much the same thing. A great deal more drama could have been shown on this cover, making it draw the reader to this book over other books. Fonts and layout are great, it's just the choice of artwork that's not right for this book.

If you like a short, sweet JAFF novella with only a splash of angst but a new, interesting story line, this book is for you. The plot itself is a twist, never mind the twists within that keep the reader on their toes. A satisfying read, if a bit simplistic.

Disclaimer: I am a JAFF author and some might consider this review to be a conflict of interest. However, I was a reader first, and my reviews are honest and impartial. I write them for both the reader and the author. I am friends with Nicole Clarkston.

I love full length novels, but there are just sometimes when you need to be able to read a book in a short time as a break. This book fits the bill to a T. It's humorous, fun, silly, and definitely enjoyable. *May contain slight spoilers*

The premise of this story is Darcy and Elizabeth telling the story of their courtship and marriage. It is slightly different from cannon as Elizabeth is a widow when she meets Darcy. I'll leave the details for that out.

Darcy and Lizzy have their usual struggles, which we see outlined as we see both of the characters tell their POV of their courtship. You never know quite which version of events to believe and it is up to the reader to form their own opinion.

Alix James has delivered another masterpiece and I would recommend it 100%. I couldn't stop laughing as I read and had my family asking me constantly what was so funny! Lighthearted and fun, this is a great afternoon read!

On their wedding anniversary, Elizabeth has the idea that they should write their version of events from when they met...for the future generations to read some day.
Both write of their own memories but each account differs from the other...

I liked the playfulness and though this is a true variation with events unfolding very differently to the original... It is a read full of wit, comedy, romance and teasing between the two main characters.
Let's just say... Their great grandchildren will be very confused by the events that apparently took place and their written differing versions.

What a an interesting way to look back on 20 years of marriage! Have each partner write a memoir detailing his or her memory of the courtship!I found it interesting that Elizabeth married a sickly Andrew Bingley, tried to keep Lousia from marrying Randolph Hurst who sounded like a lout, kept Caroline in line, and tried to help Bingley find his manhood via Darcy. Darcy and Elizabeth didn't have an easy courtship. Lydia tangled with Wickham but didn't marry him. Collins tried to corner Jane but was stopped by Darcy! Richard didn't think that Elizabeth loved Darcy, but he was wrong!
