When hybrid werewolf Kyle Smithson saves the life of a young human woman, he has no idea what trouble his actions are about to cause. He also has no idea the wife he buried centuries ago isn’t dead, but now a vampire embroiled in an escalating turf war. With an ancient promise to keep and his personal stakes growing by the hour, Kyle wants nothing more than to get out alive, but caught between a woman he once loved and the woman he's trying to help, he’s about to have the fight of his life.
Chris Andrews embarked on his writing career while under the blissful ignorance of youth, when he thought writing a successful book was as simple as reading one.
His first novel, Divine Prey, was accepted by an agent and publisher, but true to Murphy's Law the publisher folded and the agent left the business.
Chris has since learned a lot about self-publishing.
His novels have been shortlisted in both the QWC/Hachette and Varuna/HarperCollins Manuscript Development Programs.
I am not the fastest reader, and lately I’ve hardly read at all, but… once I started reading Moonlit Genesis by Chris Andrews, I couldn’t put it down and finished the book during a long-haul flight.
The characters are well developed, as is the plot and world-building (for those that know Australia, it was detailed and accurate). I could put myself in the character’s heads and feel their angst with the situation thrown at them.
If you love a fast-paced action novel with a few quieter moments to catch your breath, I believe Moonlit Genesis is it.
When hybrid werewolf Kyle Smithson saves the life of a young human woman, he has no idea what trouble his actions are about to cause. Details of his wife are uncovered. Turf wars and lots of action. Do not miss out.
Moonlight Genesis is another hit by Chris Andrews. I was already at page 80 before I felt like I could put the book down long enough to go grab food. He is a great storyteller. It begins with Kyle who is a werewolf with something extra. He is on an airplane, having been summons to Australia. We have no idea who has called him. Physically, because of his age, he stands at 5 foot tall, the sort of detail that makes historical sense. He decides his first stop needs to be for a beer. He has barely stepped out of the taxi before he needs to rescue a young woman from a vampire, but not before the vampire breaks her neck. In a bid to save her Kyle does the one thing that will ensure her death. Chris gives us unexpected characters, a developed plot, suspense and humour. This story holds true to what Creatures would be rather than the bland stereotypes in some other books. The story has twists that make sense. This was a really enjoyable read and a big thanks to Chris Andrews.
Wow! Just wow! Werewolves, vampires and romance? Oh my. This is one of the better books I have read in a very long time! It was fast-paced, action-packed and just a thrilling ride from beginning to end! Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down until it was finished! The author did an amazing job with his world building and character development, I felt like I was a part of their world as I read. It didn't drag or become boring and there were enough twists to the plot, the ending took me by surprise. I couldn't have asked for a better book to lose myself in! Can't wait to read more about this world and its characters!!
I received an advanced copy of this novel from StoryOrigin and this review is honest and my own.
As you can tell from the first page to the last, this is an enjoyable fast-paced, well-written page turner! It has drama, emotional ups and downs, and an array of characters. Hybrid werewolf Kyle Smithson -- a werewolf tainted by a vampire's essence -- sets everything in motion when he saves the life of a young human woman and shared his blood with her to heal her. Trying to help Zannah will stir up trouble that will further be complicated when he discovers his dead wife from centuries ago is not actually dead but is a vampire. Grab your copy and get started so you know the players before the pace picks up!
This was a new to me author, and I will definitely be looking for more of his works. This read was enjoyable, full of adventure, fast paced and I couldn’t read it fast enough. I do hope there will be more stories for these characters because I would love to read more about them.
I’ve been looking forward to this book for a while. In the interests of full disclosure, I’ve known Chris for a more than a few years now, and I remember the draft of this book coming through. It was a whole lot of fun then, and with a bit of polishing to get it up to publishing standard, it’s maintained the fast-paced, anti-heroic core (with a little laconic charm thrown in) that grabbed my attention back then. But before I delve too deep – the blurb!
When hybrid werewolf Kyle Smithson saves the life of a young human woman, he has no idea what trouble his actions are about to cause. He also has no idea the wife he buried centuries ago isn’t dead, but now a vampire embroiled in an escalating turf war. With an ancient promise to keep and his personal stakes growing by the hour, Kyle wants nothing more than to get out alive, but caught between a woman he once loved and the woman he’s trying to help, he’s about to have the fight of his life.
One thing that is clear right from the start, is that this is no star-crossed lovers, twinkle-in-the-moonlight vampire/werewolf tale. Set in Canberra and leveraging off some real-world local rivalries (though much more friendly in the real), the story follows Kyle as he gets caught between two rival factions, along with a few individuals trying to work the escalating conflict for their own agenda. In weaving all these stories together, there’s an element of chaotic energy that I loved, but still a feeling that all of it was coming towards an inevitable conflict. Unsurprisingly from the author who recently put together a bunch of workbooks for melding character and structure, the narratives, while a little chaotic, never felt like they were out of the author’s control or deviating wildly towards an unknown end. As a single story, it works nicely as a standalone while fitting nicely into the larger Veil of the Gods world that Chris is constructing.
In short, the story is fun, dark at times, and has that great aspect of being able to be enjoyed either by itself as part of the larger collection. Characters like Rake, quietly getting in everyone’s way and doing his best to squash any chances of peace, and Taenorah fighting something of a private battle with very pertinent outward impact ensured the story wasn’t so simple as to let the reader confidently guess the outcome; but neither was it so complex that it needs an encyclopaedia worth of detail to understand. Dialogue could perhaps have done with a little less sass (I know, I’m kicking myself for saying that too), and at times there was a little over-explaining of the world, but nothing that really distracted from or took away from the narrative.
It was, for me, an easy read, and fulfilled all the expectations I had from the earlier draft.
I had the extreme privilege to be given an advanced copy of this book to review. I was less than 20% into it before I jumped over to Amazon and preordered it for myself. Chris Andrews writes a dark fantasy that not only makes you think but offers readers a new perspective. I was reminded a bit of the darkness of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles meets Wolf Gift but minus the sensual stuff. Readers will still see some relationship drama both in the past as well as the present.
When I started reading Moonlit Genesis I wasn't sure what direction the story would take. I ended up being gripped and unable to put it down because I needed to know what would happen. The characters are well developed and I hope we see some more of the backstory and time and adventures between the humble blacksmith stage to the present day in further books. (Please tell me there will be further books?!?!?!) I can't help but see so many possibilities!
This is the first book from this author that I have read, but most assuredly won't be the last. This is an extremely fast paced, action packed story that leaves the reader wanting more. Kyle buried his wife hundred of years earlier, not knowing that she had been turned into a vampire and would rise again. He, himself, had been bitten by a werewolf and a vampire during the same fight which claimed his wife. Flash forward to modern day and he finds that he unwittingly made another hybrid (vampire/wolf) like himself (Zannah) and they find themselves in the middle of a war between two opposing vampire factions - one side including his wife. His loyalties are torn, but he must choose and the choice won't be easy.
This is a brilliant read! It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. The world building is detailed and imaginative. This novel has strong, well developed characters and an interesting story line that keeps you turning the pages.. It had me hooked from page one until the last page and kept me awake until the early hours to finish it. I recommend this novel and would read more novels by this author. I received an advanced copy of this novel from StoryOrigin. This is my true and honest review.
This was a pretty fun read. I met Chris at the Canberra Geek Markets, and we had a good chat about his books, and I was drawn into this book in particular because it was based in Canberra!
I loved the references to Canberra suburbs and landmarks. It was fast paced and full of action, and an absolute blood bath of a climax! Despite the fairly gruesome descriptions of what it takes to actually kill a werewolf or vampire, the overall tone of the book was quite light, I think due to the main characters have a lot of teasing banter going back and forth.
I think Chris did a good job of setting the scene for other stories taking place in this same fantastical urban setting. There were lots of references to other types of Creatures and even other universes and Gods, so I think that opens up a lot of potential.
The main drawback for me was that I didn’t feel particularly attached to the characters, and I think at times they didn’t seem to have much depth or complexity to their personalities or motivations. I’d say this novel is driven more by plot than character.
This is one that will stick with me for a while. I already love me a good supernatural story, and vampires and werewolves are my favorites. But this one has such a quirky feel to it. Possibly from Zannah being such a straightforward free spirit and Kyle being so old fashioned. The juxtaposition between the two make for a very entertaining romance. Kimbriel is quite fascinating, I really would love to know more about her. Jimmy has obviously been through some stuff and I would be very interested in getting more of that in another book. Overall though I’m super impressed with the way this is written. The fact that we get to see Zannah turn and still know what she is thinking in her wolf form is such a nice touch. I can’t wait to see more of these beautiful characters that I’ve fallen a little bit in love with.

I met Chris Andrews at Book Fair Australia 2022 and bought this for my Mum, who read it and enjoyed it a year ago. This week I read it, and it was a blast! It grabs you from the opening paragraph with an intriguing situation, and then quickly develops into a fast-paced romp. An urban fantasy set in present day Australia (specifically, Canberra), with a new take on various supernatural races living hidden among us. This was full of action, peril, and quite a few deaths-by-werewolf. Some good twists and surprises, enjoyable characters (especially the highly snarky Zannah!), and even a little romance in the mix. I highly recommend it! A fun read.
Well, that was a fun and energetic read. Some interesting developments on the vampire v werewolf idea with shifting alliances and enemity, as well as interesting ways the Creatures’ powers and natures function. And tonnes of gory action!
Was a pleasure to meet the author personally at a recent pop culture expo. Terrific fellow…and he has a range of excellent resources for writers (one of which I’ve also purchased and used … and found extremely helpful).
I have to say that this was a great book and I really did like this book with this author's useal writing style and so on and this is my opinon. I have to say that I recommend this book to almost everyone as it has all the things you would want in a book like this and this is my opinion. I receieved this book for free thru an Advanced Review Copy, ARC, with an honest review freely given.
In an Australian airport, he passes control, trying to calm down, in front of the employee who stops him, very perplexed.
Does he have something to declare ? She asks him.
If she knew... Kyle smirked inwardly, threatening to sneeze at the employee’s many silver rings. He hates the smell of silver and avoid touching it at all costs.
After all, she’s just a human doing her job, he thinks...

An incredible Fantasy/adventure read, full of twists and surprises, that cannot be put down, with very attractive characters (I loved Kyle and Zannah).
I loved reading this novel : I thought I was in an adventure movie !
This is the author’s first book that I discover with a great pleasure . His writing is fascinating to read !
