Adorable Funko Pop! versions of the Universal Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Wolfman and other classic creatures of the night make their first ever frightful appearance in Little Golden Books!
What better way to introduce everyone's favorite Universal Monsters to a new generation than with a Little Golden Book featuring Dracula, Bride of Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and many more. Humorous scenes introducing each monster as adorable Funko Pop! versions of these classic creatures is a safe and fun way to make reading a scary good time for kids 2 to 5 and fans of all ages. Funko and Universal Monster collectors will also love this new addition to the Little Golden Books line.
So, I was a weird kid. Growing up I was in love with the classic Universal monster movies. My dad was an avid watcher of TCM and AMC (back before it had commercials and only played classic movies). When October hit and their "Monsterfests" came on, I delighted in it. I remember Lugosi's Dracula was the first one I saw and I was enamored from the start. I tracked down pretty much every film with Lugosi and Karloff that I could and the first VHS tape I got other than Disney movies as a kid was a copy of the 1932 version of The Mummy.
Point is, I have a soft spot of classic monsters.
I'm not particularly a fan of the Funko pop lineup, but I concede there is a charm to them and seeing the classic monsters look like this:
Well, that's fairly amusing.
As such, this book is adorable; classic monsters looking cute and giving little life lessons while going through a surprisingly large lineup (even the Phantom of the Opera is included). It's charming. It's not exactly a story, being more of a friendly looking primer of the characters with an amusing piece of advice or quote next to them. It's obviously written more for adults than the kids, but fortunately my daughter still enjoyed it and had fun with the friendly look of the monsters. Not amazing, but still worth a look for classic monster fans who want to share it with younger kids. 3/5 stars.
This is absolutely adorable. I honestly can’t remember reading many Little Golden Books growing up, but I had to get this one since it combines Universal Monsters and their adorable Funko Pop counterparts!🖤
This book doesn't have an actual story so it's pretty pointless and a waste of time. The dumbest thing is at the end when it mentions the monsters having kids because the monster and his bride as well as Dracula wouldn't be able to have kids. My daughter said maybe the kids were created by Frankenstein but then the older kid shown wouldn't look his dad and the kids wouldn't grow up unless Frankenstein kept changing their bodies. I think she wanted this thinking it was supposed to be a book that tells you about the movie monsters she loves but got instead a book that reads like a bad self help book.
I never thought that I would come upon the day when I would be ashamed for Golden Books and be categorizing them along with every other company working to milk the nostalgia machine like Disney but here we are.
This book was meant to be a book that my niece wanted in place of another bad book choice but before ordering it I happened to glance at some samples while telling her she needed to choose another book since I didn't believe this was going to be something she would enjoy. And then of course I ended up ordering this just in case but with the thought I would actually read it before passing it on to see if I had been mistaken.
Once the book arrived I cracked it open and took the chance to read it while I found myself basically agreeing with my former bad back intuition. Universal Monsters Little Golden Book is basically a self-help book based upon a gothic monsters theme of Hollywood thus providing lines such as "The scariest step any monster can take... ...is the first step (Frankenstein's Monster)", "slow and shambling wins the race (The Mummy)", "some monsters' bites are worse than their bark (Wolf Man)", "Monsters never let a mask.. ...hide their happy face (Phantom of the Opera)" and "Still waters run deep (Creature of the Black Lagoon)". These are then followed sometimes with bad puns such as "Many monsters have terrible powers... ...though transformations tend to make them a bit batty at times" while showcasing Dracula in bat shaping crashing into the ground before his wives.
Otherwise each monster (which is used repeatedly throughout the book to ensure you remember them as such even if it means using words like monstrous) is provided their own spread of pages. Their name is at the top, that horrid self-help advice and/or part of punnery follows as the text, which doesn't connect to another character thus the book is just a compilation of advice. The exception to this is for the Invisible Man since he unravels just like Mummy can but for whatever reason it wasn't thought the reader needed any self-help advice from him so he works as an intermission perhaps *eye roll*.
The book ends on a horrible note that once you combine all these characters you just end up making sequels, which is true when you consider Son of Frankenstein, Son of Dracula and Frankenstein Meets Wolf Man but what type of ending is that? Honestly, though, and especially since Golden Books is meant to be for kids it may have been a much funner way to end the books by stating monsters who get together all do the Monster Mash.
Probably the only saving grace for this book is the fact that the whole is illustrated in bright colors even for such a darker genre. Furthermore since the characters are portrayed in the Funko Pop art style they end up being more cute and adorable in many regards, unmasked Phantom you are the exception, with their big cartoonish heads.
In the end I wouldn't recommend this book for anyone unless they don't mind wasting money just to have a Funko Pop collector item since as a book it really isn't worth it alone. And for those who are wanting to teach younger readers about these characters there is a much better book series called The Hollywood Monsters, which is geared towards elementary age readers.
As soon as I found this book on Amazon, I HAD to have it. The cover is adorable and I have several of these Universal Monsters Funko Pop! guys.
This book doesn't disappoint. It might be short, but it's definitely cheeky and funny. The illustrations are gorgeous and every page is super colourful. I smiled all the way through this little tale covering quite a few familiar monsters, and especially liked the ending because it's cute and so true!
Loved this. Glad I can add it to my monster collection. 😍
The childish humor was correct tone but it lost pace half way in that just felt the author tryed to think of what seemed neat idea. This is a Funko universe so the children at the end where non-canon totally not what should’ve been added.
Gosh, this book is incredible. The artwork is so vibrant and endearing, you can’t help but fall a little more in love with these monsters. A fun way to introduce characters to the children in your life.
Loving all the new Little Golden books with different fandoms!!! :D This one was all about the Universal Monster movies and features almost all of them. Perfect for Halloween and just reading them in general for fans and to introduce kids to the classic films.
5 stars!!! This is adorable! Hilarious! Adoralarious!! I don't want to give anything away, but trust me if you love to laugh and you love the Universal Monsters then you should definitely get this.
Adorable and perfect for the season! Been catching up on SO many classic horror movies this year... and the ending of this as it pertains to sequels is so spot on because each classic universal monster has like 5+ sequels LOL. My heart beats deeply for the Creature from the Black Lagoon always and forever! And The Invisible Man is almost as sassy here as he is in the movie (I mean he doesn't smack someone with a broom and then throw over a baby stroller BUT he's got a clever one-liner).
