I received a gifted advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via Lovebookstours and the publishers.

Return to Harlech is the second book by a newly discovered author (Ruth Torjussen) that I have read.
Although this was the complete opposite to the first book I read, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
In this book we meet Tess and Steve. Tess and Steve were friends before marrying each other and their marriage is full of misery, distrust, hatred and volatility.
Whilst I didn't particularly like either of the main characters, I did feel sorry for Tess at times, and did actually feel a little sorry for Steve near the end as a lot of his behaviour stemmed from his troubled childhood.
Tess and Steve go for a relaxing weekend away back to Harlech (where Steve is originally from). Then hostilities start to arise. Events are not as Steve remembers them.
Tess longs for a baby and hopes this will be the weekend she can (sneakily) conceive a baby with Steve (unbeknown to him).
Then everything unravels and revenge comes knocking on the door!
This revenge horror will twist your stomach but have you frantically turning the pages to discover who, what, where, when, why! I couldn't put this book down!
Praise for Ruth Torjussens writing styles and for creating two opposite types of books that are both amazing in equal measures!

Spoilers ahead

Overall it was a good read! I love the idea behind the book but was hoping it would have ended differently. The witchy, save the environment vibe didn’t really sync up with the revenge aspect. I would have liked more character development for the witchy family and less of Steve’s nonsense lol
The ending was a bit too wrapped up in a nice bow for me. Tess sucked in her own way and nine months couldn’t make her a better person.
Some things stood out as odd to me - leather, silk, and chainsaws wouldn’t be items that people who care about the planet so deeply would be using. Leather production is very harmful to the planet and chainsaws cause air and noise pollution. Those things and some other minor errors could have been picked up by a good editor.

Having not long finished another book by this author I found her light and funny writing to be my style. This was completely the opposite but yet I was still addicted.
A dark, haunting tale with hidden depths.
The characters were not particularly likeable, while at times you felt sorry for Tess. She has her own traits that make you forget these sad things she has endured.
The writer has an amazing style, her scenery is so descriptive you can truly picture it all.
The story moved at a fast pace and kept me wanting to know what had happened in the past and how it would end. While some of it was predictable, other bits were completely surprising.
A really interesting story!

I read Ruth Torjussen's first book 'friends and neighbours which I immediately fell in love with so I had high hopes for this book. What this book establishes to me is that Ruth is very talented author who can write in different genres and be absolutely brilliant!

Immediately this book hooked me in , I love the character of Tess , I could relate to her on many levels and could see where she was coming from on a lot of aspects of the book.

The relationship between Tess and Steve was actually refreshing to me , to have a couple who have a very defunct relationship , but ones that by the end of the book you realise why they are that way. Tess decides to take her and Steve back to where he grew up (thanks to a friend of a friend with a lovely house) , Tess's plan of becoming pregnant look like they might actually happen with all signs pointing the right way.

But then here comes the twists.... and boy are they big twist ! This book will have you on the edge of your seat , desperate to find out the answers to the questions the twists throw at the readers. It is a brilliantly written book , it flows through the storyline and takes you on the journey , challenging your mind to try work things out try to guess what is going to happen.

Think I have definitely found a new favourite author ! Can't wait to see what else she does !

Title: Return to Harlech
Author: Ruth Torjussen
Pages: 196
Rating: 5/5

A huge thank you to the author and Love Books Tours for allowing me to be part of the blog tour!

Synopsis:

Tess and Steve are a dysfunctional couple and their marriage has been on the rocks for some time. But there is something that Tess wants much more than a divorce, a baby. Tess plans a trip for her and Steve to his hometown of Harlech, where unwillingly known to him she plans to get pregnant.
However, on his return to Harlech, Steve soon begins to be haunted with memories from his childhood. He soon finds he isn’t as popular as he once thought and he has no memories of the residents who greet him.

The weekend Tess envisioned has her questioning if she could survive without her husband afterall as residents seek retribution for the crimes of Steve’s past.

Review:
Wow, what a book! Let’s start with the front cover that instantly grabbed my attention, it instantly gave the book a dark feel and I needed to find out more. The description was also gripping, it instantly gave me an eerie feel and I could really sense that this book may be very atmospheric as stated on the front cover. The reviews looked very promising too, but I refused to read any as I wanted to go into this book blind and I’m bloody glad I did!

First chapter in and I could feel that things were off, it hinted that this could be quite an intense read. The story itself is told from a few different perspectives which were easy to follow and kept the story flowing, but it meant we could get into the characters heads and feel everything they were feeling which was quite powerful at times.

From the get go, I felt myself being hooked in and I began to become invested with the characters. I really wanted to delve into Tess’s past as I was very curious of her. As for Steve at first, I felt on the fence with him, but then I eventually did make my mind up afterall. Tess had her issues; I could understand some of Steve’s rationale but at times I found myself getting very frustrated at him.
Return to Harlech had me feeling all sorts of things! Some parts were very intense and I could imagine that it could leave some readers feeling uncomfortable if they don’t appreciate dark reads, but I loved this feeling! The read was quite powerful in parts and at times I was genuinely shocked but then at other times I found it to be quite emotional, this was a whirlwind of a read!

I loved how I didn’t expect this story line at all! It was a pager turner I devoured in one sitting because I couldn’t put it back down until I’d known what had happened! The fact that the author is also a very descriptive writer and I imagined everything too is another positive to this book, I just loved her writing.

This was a dark, haunting read, I was fully captivated by this twisty horror and at times I did feel my stomach turn a little, the cover did reflect the book well and the author did an amazing job at catching me off guard with this read!

Tess is taking her husband Steve on a weekend away after he’s been working away lots…but the real reason is so she can get pregnant….without him knowing; and despite the fact that they have a volatile relationship. But all she can think about is having a baby, so with her friend Dorothy, they develop their little plan. Heading off to the village where Steve grew up seems like a brilliant idea and he’s pleased that people remember him – even if he can’t remember them. But as the weekend moves on, he starts remembering things from his past – and realises he may not just have been the legendary sports star that he thinks – he was something much worse than that. But do the locals remember what he did? And can they move on from his actions? Will Tess realise that she’s better off without Steve or will she carry on with her plan?

This is a dark and twisty story of revenge – and I have to say one that Steve well and truly deserves!! In terms of the characters, he’s not a nice guy. And even when he starts to realise what an absolute idiot he is, it’s too late. There really is nothing likeable about him! With Tess I started off not liking her – I thought her plan to secretly trick Steve into getting her pregnant was a terrible idea; plus there are a few other things she gets up to that are disgusting. However, as you read on you realise that there is a lot to her past – and although it doesn’t excuse her behaviour – it will make you realise she’s not as bad as she seems. In the end I was definitely satisfied with the way things ended for them both. There are some mysterious characters in this too – I especially loved Anwen and Dorothy.

The setting, at first, sounds wonderful. A little Welsh village, a castle and a little remote cottage. However, with a storm brewing and things escalating it becomes a dark and dangerous place….

The plot was gripping – I just wanted to keep turning the pages to see what would happen next. Would Steve get what was coming to him? Would Tess come to her senses? Was there more going on then we first imagined? And I loved the ending which you will never guess!

Overall, a fab, dark and twisty horror. It’s not too gruesome, yes there is a bit of blood but nothing too bad! So if you’re looking for a relatively quick read with some characters that you will despise, others that are mysterious and a twisty, dark storyline then you should check this out. Recommended by me.

Thank you Love Books Tours very much for this gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.

When I was approached by Love Books Tours with Return to Harlech I sent my RSVP back so fast. I knew I had to read more by this author and couldn’t pass up the opportunity. This proved to be the right choice for numerous reasons. Not only did I get to relish in Torjussen’s creativity but also read a considerably new style to the previous book. Where Friends and Neighbours was on the more light hearted side, this one was more serious with darker twists. As you can probably gather from the book’s blurb this isn’t going to be a straightforward plot. Torjussen has wrote another fascinating and addictive story. My interest was sparked by the cover and I instantly knew that I had to know more. This appeared to be a common theme throughout reading the story too. As soon as information was revealed, more questions were asked and so to was my thirst to learn more about the characters.

Torjussen weaves thought and shock throughout, captivating the reader’s interest through vivid descriptions and fascinating directions to the story. Initially it may seem hard to get into but once the narrative focuses more into Steve’s past and Tess’ desires, the story hooks you in. The pace picks up and before too long the novel concludes. The genre – revenge horror – is one I haven’t had much experience with and it did make for some fascinating reading. These aspects were remarkably gripping and unpredictable. It certainly has asserted this author’s diverse talent to write various genres. Humour clearly comes naturally to the author, evidenced in Friends and Neighbours but she also has a seriousness to her writing which is brilliant to see. I think this proves the authors natural talent to writing as she so effortlessly had produced two completely different texts.

The characters were pivotal to the plot and was very much a character driven story. Through Steve, the narration introduces and presents a whole backstory to the character, with Tess trying to seduce him into conception. The pair are dysfunctional as the blurb reveals and therefore both appeared to posses disliked traits. I found it difficult to connect with them yet I was drawn into their lives and needed to find out what was going to happen.

Overall, this was a fascinating and unusual read for me.

I enjoyed reading Friends and Neighbours, and I was really excited to read this particular one especially. Ruth Torjussen's writing technique is most certainly unique! It's an intriguing read, although I have to admit that it took me a while to get into the story. However, after a couple of chapters it really did pick up. The plot of her books are relatable, mentioning serious topics/issues that needs to be addressed or everyday issues. Return to Harlech is navigated from the main characters perspectives.  Steve and Tess' marriage is at breaking point. They can't seem to understand one each others' needs and desires. Tess desperately wants a child but her husband thinks it's too soon; he doesn't feel that he is ready. I couldn't really understand Tess' actions, I mean, why would she want to bring a baby into a dysfunctional marriage? There's a major communication breakdown; they both get easily ticked off with one another. Steve constantly belittles Tess and because of her husband's behavior, Tess gets easily aggravated.

Tess decided to organize a short trip to her husband's hometown of Harlech, Wales. She thought that a quick getaway was just the thing  they needed right  now.  But she got way more than she bargained for; a much needed wake up call. As the plot unravelled, the hostility between them escalates, and Tess reaches the boiling point. And she finally acknowledges that she is in an unhealthy relationship. Both of them had very dysfunctional childhoods, and yes, at times I felt sorry for Steve and Tess. But, I was really frustrated with Steve's behavior! Oh my goodness! The last 10 chapters took me by surprise!! Overall, it's a great read! And I'm glad that I had the opportunity read Return to Harlech. Because, very rarely I read horror, but this book pleasantly surprised me!

This is the second book I have read by Ruth and it is a total switch in genre from her first one and I loved it.

In this book we meet Tess and Steve. A couple that are stuck in a marriage full of misery, distrust, lies and hatred. I didn’t really take to either of the main characters but there was situations I felt a bit sorry for Tess.

As they set off for their weekend away in Steve’s hometown, everything begins to quickly unravel and the fast pace of the book keeps you gripped right until the very last page.

The authors style of writing is incredible and it kept me reading on to find out the end. I definitely did not see the ending coming and I’m still shocked by it days later. Definitely the sign of a good book.

Thank you for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review,Ruth Torjussen!

Polar opposite to her debut,Friends & neighbours,this book is a Welsh horror.
As you see in the blurb,it begins with Tess being incredibly desirous of motherhood and hence she meets with a doctor who's a friend of Dorothy.Dorothy is almost two decades older than Tess,much to the flirt, Steve's annoyance.
Also,he believes she is eccentric to put it mildly.

They're off to Harlech.
But when old acquaintances whom Steve doesn't remember but they definitely do start to pop up wherever they set foot and Tess seeing this bald and malnourished girl everywhere,will things change for the better or worse?

Tess is a victim of bullying while her husband is a bully himself.He's a deplorable person who tries to redeem himself but alas,not a stitch in time.
Meanwhile,Rhys,a sweet and charming guy whose actions and personality bring Tess closer to him gets her thinking 'what if he were my husband?'
But there's a huge raven that seems to follow them everywhere and that bald girl who's been nagging her at the back of her mind.

Read to find out..

I hate Steve,the cheat/bully.He abuses and manipulates his wife and can't seem to keep it in his pants while I don't understand why she is desperate to have HIS kid.
Towards the end,all the various parts of the story fall in place and make sense.
The women in black cloaks scene reminded me of 'Gulab Gang' from India who demand and serve justice.It definitely sent chills down my spine and I was all for the gore.

Karma is a b**ch and definitely pays you back is the moral of the story.

4/5 as I was triggered by the bullying here

The above views are solely my own.

I read Ruth’s previous book ‘Friends and Neighbours’ last month so I was expecting a similar light hearted vibe when I started reading Return to Harlech. It couldn’t be more different however, but I’m not complaining!

Return to Harlech is a dark, twisty, psychological tale that gripped me from the first page and left me reeling at the end! I literally couldn’t put it down and I devoured it in an afternoon.

It follows Tess who, in an attempt to save her marriage and get pregnant, books a romantic trip for her and her husband Steve back to his home town of Harlech. But when they arrive, instead of finding romance, they find trouble as Steve’s buried dark past catches up with them.

Ruth writes the most fabulously flawed characters. Steve makes it into the top 5 most vile book characters I’ve ever encountered and although I disliked Tess to start with, as I learned about her past and her life with Steve, I began to sympathise with her. Her character really develops throughout the book as she learns to stand up to Steve and address her insecurities.

I couldn’t have predicted the ending of this book as it takes a giant twist in the last few chapters, and a few days after finishing it, I’m still thinking about it. That’s definitely the sign of a good book.

As with Friends and Neighbours, there’s an underlying ESG message which I loved. The author’s passion for the environment and what we can do to help save it really shines through and there’s also a powerful study of the historical repression of women which wove nicely into the story.

This was my first foray into the horror genre, and I thoroughly enjoyed this story, although I’m glad I didn’t read it at night! Ruth Torjusson has made it on to my list of ‘one click’ authors.

Return to Harlech by Ruth Torjussen is such a deliciously dark and twisty psychological thriller/horror story. I admit this is the first time I have read any work of Ruth Torjussen so had no expectations as I sat down to read. Boy I had a surprise with this book. That's the one thing blogging brought me that nothing can replace...finding new authors that are excellent.
We are introduced to Tess and Steve, a married couple. Tess is desperate for a baby and wants to attempt to save her marriage so books a romantic trip to Harlech, Steve's home town. She is expecting a relaxing time but she expects wrong as Steve's past catches up with them.
The characters in this book are so fantastically human and their flaws just shine so bright. Ruth Torjussen has done such a good job in making Steve one of my most hated characters totally. I warmed to Tess as I discovered more about her back story and life with Steve. Her character development was apparent with Tess growing enough as the story unfolded to begin to get stronger and a little more confidence, looking at her own issues too.
The book had me from the first page, I was hooked and Ruth Torjussen's descriptions of the settings had me picturing everything, I could have been there. The story kept me flipping the pages and wanting more, I needed to know the past and the present...I needed to know exactly what was going to happen.
I couldn't have guessed the ending if I had tried - a twist towards the final part of the book takes you sonewhere you would bever expect.
My first experience of Ruth Torjussen's writing and I have found another author for me.
With thanks to Love Books Tours and Ruth Torjussen for the gift of 'Return To Harlech

I got this book from Love Books Tours in exchange for an honest review from my end.

I am reading Ruth Torjussen for the second time and she really didn't disappoint me.
As a budding author, I learned after reading the book how the author could write in multiple genres with such aplomb.

Coming to the book, this is totally different genre from #friendsandneighbours released last month. Here Tess and Steve move to Steve's hometown so that they can try for the baby and also at the same time work on their marriage.
But honestly, it's not an easy holiday for them with the twist of events, when the history comes back to repeat itself and haunt them. Ruth has made it more interesting with her writing style.
Normally, people when they write about history, they get stuck there itself, but Ruth all along was trying to tie the ropes from the present to the past, which made the book more interesting. Though the book started as a bit slow burner to start with, it picked up speed half a through and became more interesting that I didn't see the end coming honestly.
As stated earlier, there are so many tips that I picked up in this book, that will post in my blog at a later date, with all those details, especially about trying out the new genre of horror.

After reviewing and really enjoying Friends and Neighbours, also written by Ruth, I was excited at the prospect of Return To Harlech. Although dealing with some serious issues, such as grief, prejudice and depression, in the main, Friends and Neighbours was a light, easy read - funny and charming. Return to Harlech was anything but! Please don’t misunderstand me, it was an amazing read, but it was not funny and it absolutely wasn’t light. This is a dark story that gets darker with each chapter that passes. Everyone has a secret and some of these characters are thoroughly unpleasant people. Continuing the theme of dealing with real life issues and emotions in fiction, this book like the previous one does examine the human condition and demonstrates vividly how every action has a reaction. I was completely immersed in the story and read three quarters of it in one sitting, only stopping to sleep. And I devoured the remaining chapters as soon as I woke up. A sinister story that doesn’t make you tingle like some thrillers, rather it makes your skin itch and prick as if you are sensing something awful nearby. Loved it. Highly recommended.

Tess and Steve are on their way to a relaxing weekend away to Harlech, where Steve grew up. Tess really wants to have a baby and Steve isn't ready. When they arrive in Harlech, things start to unveil. What they say is true, 'This boy who legend said must one day come back'. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Loved the characterisation and as I started reading I hated both Tess and Steve. But as you read along and find out more about Tess's past, you can't help but feel sorry for her. Tess's character reminded me of so many women who go through this in their life. As for Steve, I don't think I hated any character as I hate him. I can't really say more in case I spoil the story. Please go and pick up a copy of the book and read.

I really couldn't predict the ending as the book took a big twist in the last few chapters. There were parts I was shocked but I couldn't stop reading. The author's writing style is flawless and I found myself following the story line with ease. Dark and twisty read.

I was given a free copy of this book by Ruth Torjussen and Love Book Tours

I've been in a bit of a slump the last few months so signed up to this book on a whim, hoping it might get me back into the swing of things. I'd never read anything from the author before, and don't normally venture into the horror genre. I think this might have been just what I needed!!

Tess really wants a baby so plans a romantic trip with her husband to his hometown, Harlech. Only when they get there things don't exactly go to plan.

I really enjoyed Ruth's writing style, the way she made me absolutely hate Steve, and Tess at the beginning. I felt like she really made them come to life for me.

That twist at the end too!! I just didn't see it coming at all!!

For the first horror book I've read, and finished, in a while it is definitely one I'd recommend. I'll definitely be looking at more of this authors work and am so glad that I was lucky enough to receive a copy!!

From the moment her periods started, Tess has always known she wanted a baby, the longing of having her own child and becoming a mother.

On a thoroughly planned weekend get away to Harlech in Wales. with her husband Steve, this is the one thing Tess had on her mind, the chance of conceiving.

There’s a legend within Harlech that once you’ve been you’ll always go back.

Steve was born to Harlech, he’s a bit of a play the field kind of guy, good looking to the eye and but a bit troublesome. You kind of love him but want to hate him at the same time. Until you realise the depths of how dark and dangerous he truly has always been.

As the story unfolds, everything that’s described captivates you so much you feel like you’re actually there in the cottage soaking up the sun. Every-time the story introduces another character it’s hard to predict who and what this person is all about. It takes a hold of you so you don’t want to put it down.

But then the twist launches in and oh my...

I read Friends and Neighbours which was Ruth Torjussen's previous book and really enjoyed it so I was looking forward to this one. I was aware it was a completely different genre, not one I would typically read, but wow I'm glad I did!

Tess and Steve have a very dysfunctional marriage but Tess is desparate for a baby so puts a plan into action to take Steve on a break back to his home town. Unfortunately the plan doesn't quite go the way she thought it would.

I really disliked Steve from the start and my dislike intensified as the book progressed. I also wasn't too keen on Tess but there were times I felt sorry for her. However, things became clearer throughout the book.

The book is gripping, fast paced and full of twists and turns and I didn't predict the ending. I was hooked from the start and read the book in 2 sittings as I couldn't put it down.

Another great book from Ruth Torjussen with hopefully many more to come. I think I've found another favourite author.

loved this book just what I need to read I kept turning the pages over so quickly as I wanted to read what was happening next. I love the Author writing style so easy to understand. I loved Tess characters was amazing such a strong character that wanted someone to love her.
Steve character was amazing but in the story he was a hard character and a bully and his feelings didn’t matter who he hurt.
I love Rhys character I would have loved to here more about him in the book. And Dorothy well she was a mystery that you seemed to enjoy her character. The story was brilliant well written I didn’t expect the outcome to happen like that I was shocked x so many twist in this story you definitely enjoy this book.

Wow! This is a definite shift from Ruth's first book, Friends and Neighbours. It starts out innocently enough with a women just wanting to have a baby, but this book gets dark - quickly. I read this book in one sitting, I didn't want to put it down. I enjoyed the twists and turns of this book and would recommend to anyone looking for a dark thriller. Be warned - the ending is - CRAZY. Atmospheric revenge is an accurate description of this book. Be sure to check it out!

This was a well written story with interesting, if not likable characters and an enjoyable read. Both of the main characters don’t really seem to be good people and when things take a turn you kind of feel like they deserves what they get. Although Tess is portrayed as someone who has been controlled by her husband Steve, she’s not very likable either. Steve definitely gets what’s coming to him and you don’t find out why until things develop in the last quarter or so of the book, but there are hints along the way. In the end this was quite interesting and a quick read.

I enjoyed it. It was something completely different then the previous book but it was well written. It is easy to follow and you understand the characters. It was difficult to move the characters but you do understand where they are coming from. So much vengeance on this book and the ending was a nice turn of events. Overall enjoyed it.

I enjoyed this book, although it is dark. I can’t say I liked either of the characters, but it’s a great exploration of people. The who they are, as opposed to who they think they are. Until they find out the truth.

The book is very descriptive and it does haul you in, so you want to know what happens and it’s a slow burn without being too slow.

Thanks to LoveBooksGroup, the Author and publisher for the advanced reading copy of this book.

My Thoughts
This is second book I have read by the author and I love her writing style.

This is such a creepy and atmospheric read, I was drawn in right from the start.

Both Tess and Steve are such equally frustrating characters. Steve for being just a generally horrible person, and Tess for being a bit weak and quite frankly a bit of a psycho 😂😂.

I throughly enjoyed seeing how the story came together and the links to Steves past, I did find I preferred the build up to the actual ending, as I didn’t warm to Dorothy as a character.

A fantastic read and I am looking forward to reading more by the author.

A raw vibrancy

A slice of folk horror with ecological undertones. Whilst the underlying messages can feel a little overstated the wit here is deliciously over the top and the real fun and enjoyment in this read comes from the vibrancy of the two deeply flawed central characters.

I was provided a gifted copy of this by @ruth_torjussen and @lovebookstours and I signed up as the tag line said ‘revenge horror’ and it isn’t something I’ve read a lot of.

This story follows Tess and Steve who are in a not so great marriage. Tess wants a baby and plans a secret conception during a trip to her husband’s hometown of Harlech (never a good idea). As soon as I started this book, I found Steve to be what I can I to describe, as deplorable. He really thinks he is something and needs constant reassurance of how he will be remembered and so well liked back in Harlech. I just couldn’t be dealing with that. It annoyed me reading it. Such a man child! Tess was desperate to have a baby with this man and all I wanted to do was crawl in to the book and have a word with her!

They arrive and Steve begins to remember his apparent wonderful childhood and realised that he wasn’t that great. He wasn’t popular and his friends don't want to know (not a shocker) and he has no memory people who remember him. He certainly doesn’t want to do any baby making and Tess isn’t loving that. I however, thought it was for the best because she needs away from that idiot!

The book is quite a slow burner, setting the scene and finding out about Steve and what happened in his youth. The story progresses without loads happening but what did happen was all relevant. I didn’t find myself bored at all. Suddenly the end is near and it all happens at once and is over quite quickly. The tag line wasn’t lying with the revenge part! I couldn’t quite believe what I was reading. It finished that part and was like ‘what did I just read’? I don’t know what I expected but… I still can’t put it in to words. I read it days ago but could review it immediately. It was bizarre. This isn’t a complaint. Its hard to compare when it’s not your normal type of book but I know I enjoyed it. Give it a read and see what you think!

Book: Return to Harlech
Author: Ruth Torjussen

Blurb:
When Tess arranges a weekend love trip back to husband Steve’s hometown, her secret plan to make a baby is not the only trap that he is walking into...

Tess and Steve are a dysfunctional couple in a rocky marriage. Despite this Tess yearns for a baby more than a divorce and plans a secret conception during a trip to her husband’s hometown of Harlech. But when they get there Steve is anything but horny. Instead, he begins to remember his supposed halcyon days of childhood with horrible clarity. He wasn’t the popular sports hero he thought he was. Now it seems his friends don't want to know and he has no memory of the enthusiastic locals who greet him.

A young girl comes to Tess in her dreams, is this her child trying to warn her? Or the child of the mysterious Anwen who has lent them the cottage? With her hopes for pregnancy fading, she longs for a different future without her domineering husband, but can she survive without him?

And can Steve survive his return to Harlech as the locals seek retribution for the crimes of his past.

◾This book is completely different from the first book, with Friends and Neighbours being a total light hearted genre and this being totally dark.
◾ The author did an amazing job in transitioning the genre and the book was so well written.
◾ The book is dark, scary, full of twists and turns. In short, a book you can't put down.

I was sent a copy of this book for review.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.
Tess and Steve have a dysfunctional and volatile marriage. Tess, who grew up in foster care after an abusive childhood, is an emotionally unstable and needy adult which lead to her attachment and dependence on Steve as a means to dispel her pain. She isn’t very nice to most people and trolls Twitter to spew hate as a release mechanism. Unfortunately, Steve is an abusive, violent and deceitful man who chose Tess as an easy target. He cheats any chance he gets and uses his fists to keep her in line if she questions him. Steve has a dark and sinister past that will lead to shocking revelations for the couple.
When Tess decides she wants a baby to try to fix their marriage she arranges for a long weekend away back to Harlech, Steve’s childhood home. She is ovulating and plans to get pregnant without even telling Steve. Deception and lies follow this couple as they go back to Harlech. Steve thinks he is going to meet up with old friends and relive his glory days but is rebuffed by most and shunned by others which leads him to question why. Tess meets Rhys in town, the younger brother of a former classmate of Steve and they hit it off. After all three go to dinner, secrets start to unravel, lies come out into the open and the lives of this unhappy couple will never be the same.
This was a tough read for me, not only due to the dark narrative but more so because the two main characters weren't very likeable or easy to connect with for me. They were damaged from their pasts but blamed others for their hurt and pain. Steve was irredeemable in my eyes. However, through his behaviour towards Tess, she became a more sympathetic character. Tess's story arc left me with a sense that she could change once given the much-needed help with her mental health issues and a healthy relationship. There was a sad and disturbing mystery woven through the story that changed it from general fiction into something much darker which adds depth and intrigue to the plot. I give it 🌟🌟🌟🌟.
I loved the cover of this book, it really reflects the feel of the book and tells you straight away that what you are about to read is dark and foreboding. It’s a short book which I read in a day and is so different from her other novel, Friends and Neighbours. I really didn’t like Steve, which is how you’re meant to feel but I didn’t particularly like Tess either so didn’t feel empathy for her even though she is mentally and physically abused by Steve and used as a pawn by the women in her life so they can enact their revenge. Tess is not completely innocent, she has her own, not so nice secrets. I liked the way everything unfolded and we discover that Steve’s memories of his childhood in Harlech aren’t really what happened. I definitely wanted to keep reading once I started and enjoyed the build up and anticipation, wanting to find out how it all panned out and I didn’t guess what the true story was. I did however feel that the ending was a bit rushed. The revenge part all happened too quickly that I lost that feeling of anticipation and I felt hurried and a bit disappointed by the ending.
