The Rockies, 1840. Floyd Logan is running out of time. Desperate for one last visit to his aging parents, the roughhewn man struggles with leaving his wife and child alone in the piercing winter and exposed to danger. And after battling his way through gale-force winds for seven hundred miles, the haggard man’s tough trek ends prematurely when an old enemy’s accusations trap him in a frontier jail. Frustrated by the delay in clearing his name and finally completing the arduous journey to reunite with his folks, an exhausted Floyd fears his return to his own family may come at a terrible price. But with the endless plains, slave-catchers, crooked lawmen, and deadly ambushes standing between the determined man and his homecoming, he’ll have to fall back on what he knows valor and pure grit. Will Floyd ever make it back to his beloved wilderness, or will the trials of travel cost him his life? Mettle of a Mountain Man is the riveting third book in the Logan Mountain Man Western series. If you like loyal heroes, white-knuckled rides, and vivid history brought alive, then you’ll adore Donald L. Robertson’s adventure-packed tale.
I am a retired Southwest Airlines pilot. My wife Paula and I, live with our Chihuahua, Gabe, in Mesa, Arizona in a 55+ Golf Resort even though we don't play golf. It affords my wife a very active lifestyle while I spend my time writing. As a child, I enjoyed going to the Saturday matinee and spending the day watching westerns and daydreaming about the old west. I shared a passion with one of my aunts and read every western I could get my hands on. John Wayne was my favorite actor and Louis L'Amour my favorite writer. I miss those days where the good guys win, they treat the ladies right, have honor and are trustworthy. So, in about 2014, I started writing my own westerns and became quite shocked that people enjoyed them. I am so thankful to those of you who read my books, take the time to write reviews and email me. John Wayne said it best when he said "without you, I wouldn't be here". Please accept my deepest appreciation.
Logan heads to Tennessee for a reunion with his parents and siblings. Even in Missouri and Tennessee he tangles with bad men. A good, clean western with clearcut good and evil.
A LONG OVERDUE FAMILY TIME IN TENNESSEE FOR THE YOUNG MOUNTAIN MAN TURNS INTO A MISSION OF SURVIVAL
☆☆☆☆☆
Mettle of a Mountain Man: Logan Mountain Man Western Series - Book 3 (A Logan Mountain Man Series) by Donald L. Robertson is definitely a well-written tale of a young mountain man who's bent on reaching his family in Tennessee for the first time in over ten years. His three-month travel time from the Rocky Mountains to Tennessee to visit his family for Christmas is one after another struggle with everything from highway bandits, drunk pricks abusing animals, slave chasers from Alabama, to helping a young married couple escaping through the help of the underground railroad to New York.
Floyd Logan is not only a mountain man who is totally at ease in the mountains but more than well equipped to take on those who harm the innocent but with his high morals and his sense that it is his responsibility to help anyone in need even at the expense of his own well-being.
This story is action-packed, intriguing, suspenseful, and heartwarming all at the same time. The interaction with the Logan family and their friends will touch your every soul. At the same time, your need for action is met in every chapter.
If you haven't read any of this series, start with the first book. Once you've got into the first few pages, you'll be hooked with all the struggles and accomplishments, the characters Floyd meets up with both friends and foes from fellow mountain men to the native Indians. You won't be able to put the books down once you start.
Quotes:
"Hard to tell what a person is made of, man or woman, until their mettle is tested."
"If you're not helping people, you don't deserve to be here."
Ten yrs later, Floyd, now 26 yrs old returns home to visit his parents and siblings.
With a few obstacles and threats, book 3 has a lot less serious action and adventure focusing more on his feelings towards his family & friends, help he provides to some people, and his Shoshone family he has left behind - missing them - with his only thoughts of being able to return to them soon.
Of course there are always some bad guys in the mix, but after completing books 1 and 2, the situation(s) he faces in book 3 seems like the proverbial cake walk.
Still, Robertson is a great author and I’m enjoying his works very much much.
After reading the Logan Series before this series. This last book did not reveal what I thought it would. I was surprised Lettie and Mika were alive and waiting for him. I put off reading the end for several days because I knew Leotie wasn’t around later in Floyd’s life. I guess we will never know what and when something happened to her. As always, lots of adventures and good characters. Could there be another book coming?
A fur trapper ventures east to Smokies to visit his parents and family, then returns to his own family in the Rocky Mts. He makes friends and enemies both going home and returning.
I throughly enjoyed this and the two preceding book. It’s a great storyline. It shows a period of time where a young man learns and grows into a man and learns from life while staying true to his beliefs. Highly recommend this book to anyone.
This series is good reading. It ended quite abruptly. I just started reading it. I have to admit that if I knew that there was a Floyd Logan in the mountains, I'd be tempted to head for the hills!
Book #3 - Mettle of a Mountain Man: Logan Mountain Man. This is a good western series by an outstanding author that takes me on a great trip through the mountains in the west into the 1800's.
This book begins as Logan rescued an Indian girl with a small baby from another Indian tribe that had kidnapped her and her baby and was badly mistreating her. During this time Logan was a mountain man trapping for furs. He later married an indian girl and became a family man.
After numerous years in the mountain Logan heads home to visit his Ma And Pa, brothers and sisters, cousins and nephews at the old home place in Tennessee. In the dead of winter his Indian Wife and Son stays in the mountains and waits for Logan to return to them. This story covers the courage it takes to travel for months on horseback, taking care of horses, pack mules, sleeping under the stars, subjectively facing bad weather, hearing gun shots not knowing if it's good or bad people. Logan starting back to mountains saying good-bye to his family knowing he will be facing snow and bad weather for months and maybe never seeing his family again.
These are good, clean, adventurous books true to the time period written for all members of the family regardless of age. Each occurrence was described in vivid detail with all the characters coming alive. The well written story moved so fast with continuous action throughout that I didn't want to stop reading until the end. I enjoyed each book and will continue to read books by this author. I recommend this series to everyone.
Donald L. Robertson has become my favorite writer in the western genre, and I didn't think that any one would ever pass Louis L'Amour. Also, the Logan family if it has not passed the Sackett family as my favorite western series, is really close. I have read everything that Robertson has written, and some I have read on Kindle Unlimited -- and I am going to go back and buy them, because I want to keep them. This third book in the Logan Mountain Man Western Series, and I have liked each one better than the one before. I am anxious for Robertson to get back to writing about the Logan brothers, and look forward to their adventures together. As you might expect, I highly recommend this book to any one that loves westerns. I got mine yesterday, and finished it today.
Donald Robinson never fails to write an engaging tale. His gift with the written word is a blessing for those like me who fully appreciate a well written book. If you have read all his books as I have you will be chomping at the bit for the next story because Mettle of a Mountain Man does not disappoint. The only sad part about any of Mr. Robertson 's books is that they come to an end and I must wait for the next one.
I really enjoyed this book from front to back. The author did a great job keeping my interest creating these characters and the situations he put them in. Each character has a definate personality that I find perfectly fitting for the part they play in these stories. I have read every book except two this author has written and have enjoyed them all.I am halfway through 44 caliber justice and really am enjoying this also.
Heading home to the east to visit family Floyd Logan finds more than just some visiting and catching up. He finds himself in almost as much trouble and adventure as he did in the Rockies, facing old and new foes. Another great Donald L. Robertson frontier book full of action and adventure. Well written and east reading, it's a journey well worth traveling along with.
I preordered this book soon after starting the series. In the meantime I've read EVERYTHING else Mr. Robertson has written and enjoyed ALL of them. I really looked forward to this one, anticipating another great read. Sorry Mr. Robertson - I found VERY little action and a lot of disappointment.
Another quality western from this fine author completes this excellent trilogy. As always, there is an abundance of well developed characters involved in plenty of action in interesting settings. A solid storyline places the protagonist in a number of diverse situations with numerous ner-do-wells. All in all, a terrific read.
Robertson wove several adventures into a magnificent novel. I enjoyed the rich full bodied characters. They wormed their way into our hearts not soon forgotten. I hope Don keeps the series going. There are so many questions and future adventures yet to tell.
Robertson always keeps the reader enthralled. Logan goes home to visit his parents in Tennessee and helps escaped slaves to safety on the way back to his fa!Ily in the mountains.
Read the trilogy back to back, the third one tapered off at the end like the last chapter was thrown in as an afterthought, kinda disappointing. I hope there is more to his story after all he is only 27ish.
This book was fun to read and kept me glued to the story. Floyd is a great character and you feel as if you are part of his family. There is a lot of suspense that keep you hooked.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a good of cowboy book that I have ever read, Mr Robertson is a great writer. His descriptions of the characters and the locations makes you picture them in your head. Fine job.
These books are fantastic. They hold your attention and you can't put them down. You cant wait to see what happens next. The characters are so real. Ready to read the next one. Thank you
D Robertson is.a.great story teller. As he tells the story he uses "word pictures" that allows one to see and feel each moment. Enjoyed Logan Mountain Man and whole heartedly recommend the series.
This was a short read and I didn't like it as much as I did the other two. Having said that it was still good. Maybe Mr. Robertson will see fit to one day write the finished characters of the mountain men.
I have enjoyed Floyds travels and conflicts a lot! I anticipate the Akers on the horizon. I look forward to the Logan family's adventure also. A very well written series that improves with each book.
Mountain goes back home to see his parents, and has more advenyures, but wants to return to his wife and son, can he make it before the Indians kill him. Read and find out.my favorite if the three.
