Susan Hayes is in awe of children’s limitless imagination and thirst for knowledge. She strives to learn from the children she knows and meets, and to enjoy the world through their fresh, curious eyes. Susan lives in the East Sussex countryside of the UK with her own children―Sylvie, Finley, and Sam; her partner Neil; and two gorgeous but slightly silly ducks, Dolly and Izzy. She has written dozens of children's books.
High on ocean creatures low on plot. We stopped halfway through when Luca lost interest and got a toy to hit me in the head with. Then he said, “let’s get onto making pancakes !”
ZOOM: OCEAN ADVENTURE is a delightful nautical journey. Young children can follow along with Noah as he embarks on a big ocean adventure. Noah goes snorkeling in the coral reef, exploring a seagrass meadow, down to the deepest depths of the ocean, through a pirate shipwreck, and all the way over to the Antarctic Ocean. The book features a short sentence on each colorful page, accompanied by many cut-outs, labeled animals, and even a fun pop-up!
What I loved: This book is a pleasure to explore alongside little ones. There are so many different sea animals included, and they are even labeled- which is super-helpful for parents who may not know all these incredible creatures by sight. The book really explores the breadth of the ocean from coral reefs to the deepest black ocean floor. Toddlers will love finding creatures they recognize, such as penguins, sea otters, and dolphins alongside of those they may not know. The peek-through cut-outs are brilliantly done, with each cut-out showing something when turned to the left or right. They give extra pizzazz to this already colorful and delightful book.
Noah and his turtle lead the charge, and children will love following along with them on every page to see what they are doing. This book is a powerful spark for imagination, as children imagine joining Noah for his journey, exploring in a submarine, finding sunken treasure, escaping a great white shark, and more. The length of this book makes it perfect for toddlers and preschoolers, whose attention will certainly be captured by the many details on each page. The word-to-picture ratio is low to keep pages turning faster for younger toddlers, but can still manage to be engaging with all the animals and sea details to see for older preschoolers.
This book is full of charm throughout, and the surprise pop-up towards the end is a delight for toddlers. The pages with cut-outs are very sturdy and strong, and they will stand up to toddlers. The pop-up is a little more delicate, but still pretty sturdy (cardstock material that is attached really well), making it more difficult to tear. These touches are really key to having a book that can handle the wear-and-tear of little ones for the same amount of time as they will enjoy reading it. All the details in this book make it one that young readers will want to read repeatedly.
Final verdict: Charming, colorful, and educational, ZOOM: OCEAN ADVENTURE is a delightful journey through the ocean and the creatures who live there, perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. Highly recommend for curious young readers to share with their caregivers.
Please note that I received a review copy. All opinions are my own.
Noah goes on an ocean adventure, first snorkeling in a coral reef, then diving deep in a submarine, finding a sunken treasure, and moving into Antarctic waters.
I love the die-cut openings in this board book! Each one is like a little peek into the next adventure, and the openings are arranged very cleverly. There is also a surprise pop-out design at the end that is very cool!
The illustrations are so colorful and bright! I love the cartoony style of the art and how expressive Noah is. You can really see the action in the artwork as Noah discovers new things on every page.
Each ocean creature is labeled with its name, and the story explains some of the things the fish and animals are doing. A sea otter almost eats a crab, and some dolphins try to get a jellyfish snack. The coolest part of the story is when Noah uses the robotic arm on his submarine to grab the sunken pirate treasure.
I am so impressed with this book! It's fun and informative and beautifully designed.

Youngsters love adventures, and in this board book imaginative Noah decides to explore the ocean. He meets many interesting sea creatures before getting a big assist from a humpback whale who helps him reach shore again. Of course, all of this adventuring has been in Noah's imagination through his play with the objects in his bedroom, but it still provides good reading fun and an introduction to various species, labeled and described throughout the book. There are various cutouts and different shapes through which to glimpse the parts of the ocean through which Noah travels. This book would be entertaining for most young readers who would want to turn the pages to see what else is there. but it also makes a good lap read for youngsters.
Playful and full of ocean information, this is a fun board book to hand a little one interested in the ocean and it's many creatures. The text is a little long (at least a full sentence per page) for babies and younger toddlers, but older toddlers and young preschoolers will find it delightful. The peek through, cut out illustrations add layers to the pictures that help reflect the experience of diving into the ocean. For a board book, it is an incredibly informative children's book and the illustrations are bright and engaging.
