Rae's First Day is the first instalment in a new children's book series that puts disabled characters at the forefront of the story.

The story follows 5-year-old Rae, who has a limb difference and a super power. It's an engaging story that puts a disabled child in the hero role while encouraging readers to be more understanding and inclusive when it comes to disability.

I don't usually read/review children's books, but as an advocate for disability representation, I was super excited to share this one!

Thank you to Cheddr and the author for providing me with a lovely copy to review!

Rae’s First Day by Danny Jordan (The Capables LLC, 2021) is the first installment in a new series featuring The Capables. Rae is a five-year old girl with a limb difference who is heading to school for the first time. She is understandably a little nervous, but she also has the firm belief that her difference is not just a strength; it’s actually the source of a superpower. The exact nature of the superpower isn’t made clear in Rae’s First Day, but there are hints that Rae isn’t the only one who knows that “It’s our differences that make us super.”

Rae’s First Day effectively conveys a child’s complex attitude about what makes her different, and it just as effectively shows how her parents and other kids regard her disability. For children with limb differences and other disabilities, Rae’s experience will provide both comfort and inspiration, as well as confirmation that they are not alone.

The format of Rae’s First Day is extremely appealing. Presented as a hybrid of a picture book and graphic novel, the comic aspect is fun, while the large, colorful pages provide a lot for readers to look at. Illustrator Agustina Perciante gives her characters expressive faces that are almost Pixar-ish as they suggest three-dimensionality. In many children's books with school scenes, the kids all look alike, but Perciante makes each student a clearly unique individual, which underscores the book’s theme about the awesomeness of our differences.

I can’t completely articulate why The Capables as a series brand name is so alluring. Maybe it has something to do with the linguistics of the word capable. Superheroes frequently have capes, and these kids are cape-able, a stronger identity marker for them than being dis-abled.

For every classroom with a copy of Rae’s First Day, there is at least one student who relates to it directly, but everyone else will also benefit from its portrayals. I’m definitely eager to see future installments of The Capables if they are of the same high quality as Rae’s First Day!

@dannyjordan your book just made my daughter’s day ❤️❤️. We just read it and she was amazed that Rae has a short arm like her. She was smiling and so excited..asked when the next one in your series is coming out ❤️.

Thank you for creating a book for the limb difference community; it honestly means the world to them and to the parents.

First off, I would like to thank the author for reaching out and providing a copy of this.

Rae's First Day is about a young girl, Rae, who was born with an upper limb difference, and her first day of school. It's a story about empowerment, representation of disabilities, and just joy.
This children's book is what I wished I had when I grew up. Not many people know this, but I was also born with a disability, so it is really great to see accurate representation in a book for children that young. This book is the definiton of embracing differences and getting stronger from that, and I think that's what makes it so good. Illustrating them as an actual hero with superpowers is just a really creative and fun way to show that empowerment, which is also what makes this book so unique.
The illustrations itself are beautiful. Just wonderful. The artstyle is soft, easy for kids to understand, and overall just adorable.

I highly recommend if you have children, or if you are someone who never saw themselves in a children's book because of disability. This will change that.
I would suggest reading it anyway, regardless of if you have a disability or not, because this book might change your perspective on things, or just generally educate you more about disabled youth.

If you have the means, don't shy away from this book!

I was reading this to my niece and nephews not knowing that the main character has a physical disability similar to my sister and it made me EMOTIONAL.

The representation, the father saying positive affirmations to his daughter every single day, the way Rae knows how to think and feel beCAUSE OF THE AFFIRMATIONS....my heart is FULL OF LOVE.

I am so happy for books like these that have representation and make it genuine. I am so thankful that this generation is creating more books full of adventure, storytelling, and life lessons while being so diverse, representing people, and ya know...representing the real world!!! (with a magical twist though!)

Reading the author's bio and seeing that his daughter has a similar condition...nOW THAT'S A GREAT FATHER. Thank you so much for spreading so much love and lessons. My niece and nephews love the book and it just inspires me to also tell them positive affirmations every day too.

I loved this book! With a fun, and vibrant comic-style design, this story about a girl with a limb difference starting school is a winner. Not only is she smart, strong and capable, but she has a secret super power, which she uses to help out on the first day. Rae's First Day is the first book in The Capable's series about inclusion and diversity. I highly recommend this!

I read this book and was so happy that is was given to me by Danny Jordan. He wrote this book for his daughter Rae. Rae has limb difference and this book helps readers be more inclusive and empathetic towards others with disabilities. I am very happy that I can have this in my little free library and can share it with others. I hope there will be more in this series.

I wanted to love this book, because it’s an important message. But, it genre switched in the middle. I was expected a social emotional learning book, but it was actually a super hero book?
Also, she kept her powers from her parents? I don’t love that. Lastly— anyone who has kids knows that 5 year olds don’t say things like, “Some people will look at me differently, and that’s OK. We are all different, and it’s our individual differences and experiences that make our world super.”
