I am kind of dreading admitting it, but it's back to school time ya'll. Yesterday, we spent the day getting school physicals, shopping for supplies and getting back-to-school haircuts. So, it seems like the perfect time to share about this picture book, Emily D and The Fearful First Day by Sivan Hong. This adorable picture book is all about the first day of school and now is the perfect time to start reading it with your preschoolers and elementary age kiddos of any grade, especially after the chaos that COVID wrecked on the school schedules & consistency last year. The message of this book is to show kids how to overcome emotional challenges, like a first day of school, and can be especially helpful for kiddos who are anxious, worried or just unsure about school. I love picture books for helping to prepare my kiddos for new experiences and this one is full of adorable illustrations

Emily D. and the Fearful First Day is the third book in the Super Fun Day book series by Sivan Hong that are inspirational books that teach children how to overcome social and emotional challenges.
In this instructional book. Emily is nervous about her first day back to school. She has a new teacher, a new classroom, a new schedule, no familiar faces in her class, and to top it all off, summer's over. Life is just hard, right?! Many children have the normal first day jitters, but Emily thinks that she's all alone in her feelings.
However, Emily soon learns that she is not alone and sometimes change isn't as hard as she thinks it will be.
This sweet book is a perfect read for preschool age to second graders who are getting ready to go back to school, especially now with the added stress and changes in routine and scheduling regarding the pandemic. It is a wonderful book that will allow for meaningful conversations to help empathize with your child or students. It is also a timely back to school book that will teach bravery and the ability to cope with change.
Good luck to all the parents, teachers, and especially to all the children heading back to school this year!
This story is about Emily who is worried about the first day of her school. Her parents say it will be fun, exciting and adventurous but she doubts it. Emily gives the top 5 reasons why she thinks the first day will not be adventurous as her parents say.
The first day of school means a lot of change in her schedule. She will miss her friend, her teacher, her timetable, her classroom from last year and so on. But she eventually learns that the change can be good and fun too.
The story shows how children feel about the first day of their school and their emotions which are shown brilliantly. It helps children to understand that the change can be good for them and helps them to be brave and courageous and develop positivity.
The illustrations are brilliant and the writing too is simple. This is a perfect book for kids who are starting their new class to let go of their nervousness. It's a really good book and highly recommended.
Thanks Netgalley for the review copy in exchange for my honest review.
I received an electronic ARC from Darcie Rowan PR through NetGalley. A delightful story about the first day of school. Emily shares with readers why she is nervous and the top five reasons she does not think the first day is an exciting adventure. Readers may relate to her concerns and share them. I appreciate that her parents and new teacher make sure everything is comfortable for Emily before the school day begins. Readers see her examine the room, find the locations within it, review the schedule and spend time one on one with her new teacher. Emily then takes us through the first day and finishes with the realization that it will be okay. Love the illustrations and easy to follow text. This is a terrific addition for families who want to calm fears before the first day of school. The information Emily shares will lead to discussion and dialogue in many homes.
I went in reading this book fully expecting that it would be helpful for my youngest only. Which would have been just great. But I discovered after reading, that it is a perfect book for my Autistic son too!
Emily is fearful for her first day of school. She gives her parents reasons she's afraid and they help her assuage those fears. Emily discovers that there are other kids that are just as nervous as her to go to school.
Full of colorful illustrations, this is a lovely book that goes through some very valid concerns kids might have in their first day of school. This week be a book I keep for my young ones to read at the beginning of every school year.
This is a wonderful story about a little girl who’s nervous about starting a new grade.
I love how the book specifically lists Emily’s fears and invites conversation over how your own child is feeling. The message about how change is difficult but can still be fun is something we all need to hear.
I also love the diversity in this book, not only with a Black character but also one who uses fidget toys to help her focus.
Thank you to Suzy Approved Tours and the author for a copy of this book!
It's normal for kids to be nervous when starting the first day of school. In this book Emily is anxious for the unknown. She won't know anyone and she's used to the daily routine from last year's class. What she doesn't realize is that she's not alone and her classmates feel the same way. This is a charming book to read with your little ones before they start school, to help ease the same nerves and questions they may have as Emily. Loved the colorful illustrations as well.
Thank you Netgalley and Darcie Rowan PR, Amitz Press for the opportunity to read this book.
Great book for opening the conversation around those first day jitters! Another fantastic book in the collection of social emotional learning books from Sivan Hong. Emily D demonstrates that it is so normal to feel fearful on the first day of school. Her experience and story has the ability to resonate with every child. Emily D’s ability to navigate her fear and relax into her new classroom is a wonderful guide for any child nervous about this annual transition.
The first day of school is nervous for everyone. Emily D and Frightful First Day is a colorful and engaging book for any child facing fears about the first day of school, new class etc. This would be a great read for children 2-6 years. This book demonstrates how to overcome the anxiety of those first days of school.
A cute story about a girl fearing her first day at school. It brings a new teacher and new friends, but Emily isn't alone and there are ways to deal with all her anxieties.
As back to school approaches this book has found its place in our home at the right time. We read about Emily D. and her first day jitters. My littlest loved the story. It is simply written and clearly shows how some children have fears about the first day of school. But it also shows how that even though things are different they will be okay. Reading this out loud allowed my 3rd grader to voice some of her fears. The illustrations were bold and nicely done. Over all I think this would be a great addition to any classroom, definitely an ice breaker! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 💫
This is a nice story to ease transition each year about moving to a new class each year. It only addresses the positives though and would've been better with a few more examples of working through each worry. Nevertheless, not a bad book - worth looking at if you have a school anxious child.
I won this book on Goodreads and found it to be well done. It is a very good book to show you d children who are starting school or going up to another grade. It can be scary to young children to get another teacher or to know they won’t be in the same class as their friends. This book shows how one can see their other friends at other places in school (recess or lunch).
Starting school can be very upsetting to most kids. Even adults have a hard time dealing with change. First day blues can lead to understanding that new things can be fun and exciting.
Thank you to Goodreads for this advanced copy! This book is perfect coming out now when school will be starting up again. Starting a new year is always a scary time for most kids. I like how she has a list of why she doesn’t want to start a new year. The only thing I was confused on and doesn’t usually happen (as I am a teacher) is her going in earlier than all the kids? That would be a great way to start the year for any anxious kids but the majority of the kids are anxious as well. I enjoyed this book and all the colorful pages.
A story to help parents discuss anxiety about the first day of school with their children, it even provides a break for a child to list their own fears. I won this book through Goodreads' First Reads.
This is a short little book that helps the child adjust to the changes a new school year brings. The young girl in the story appears to have some special disability issues that are nicely addressed in a comforting way. I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review.
Another awesome book by Sivan Hong. Looking forward to reading it to my student because I know they’ll love it and it will help support my neurodiverse students.
