I read this for work and enjoyed it enough. The book and the topics get you thinking in the right direction, regardless of where it leaves you. Most of the sections were brief, high-level introductions to topics rather than the final word, which is good for finding out the areas that interest you and where you need to read and learn more. As the sections were not very in-depth I still had some questions at the end though.
Items that resonated for me:
On Humility:
"When we're preoccupied with ourselves, we think mostly about getting. But when we're in that state, the attention, honour and praise we want don't seem to come. That's because we unknowingly sabotage ourselves. We repel people when we're full of ourselves. It's only when we unselfishly give, and are not looking out for just ourselves, that the best things in life come our way."
On Positive Thinking:
“I asked my students to try to imagine a light switch inside each of their brains. Instead of saying "On" and "Off" it has an "N" in the down position and a "P" in the up position. They stand for "negative" and "positive." Ideally we'd like to have the switch in the up, or P position all the time. But for some unexplainable reason it sometimes gets pushed down to the down, or N position. When this happens things gets dark, just like when the light switch gets turned off. So in order to get out of the dark we do a simple thing--we flip the switch.
In other words as soon as we realize the negative thoughts have crept in and are dragging us down, we change them. We always have that choice because we have control of the switch. Since resentment is negative and forgiveness is positive it's healthier to move the switch back to the P position each time we realize that it's somehow slipped down to N.”
On Knowledge:
“He said what we learn in school is only a warm-up, and that the most meaningful learning would come from reading, traveling, and meeting new people.”
