The Three Hearts Equation

Rate this book
If love makes sense to you, you’re doing it wrong.

Mason

I loved Leo from the moment I met him. But life gets busy when you grow up. Leo took good care of me, and now he needs someone to take care of him. I must step up and be that person. Except I can’t do it alone.

Leo

I could carry everyone’s worries on my shoulders but mine. In just a few days, my dad ruined our family and the only person I can lean on is Mason. He worries and cares and I love him endlessly, but our lives are messy with no signs of improvement. Can we endure this on our own or is the solution to all our problems right my nose?

Quinn

I never meant to fall in love. That’s just not what I do. But Mason and Leo could use some help and who better to help them but their best friend? The more I’m with them, the more I realize I’m going down a dangerous road. Of millions of possible outcomes, all are bad but one. Do we even stand a chance?

The Three Hearts Equation is the second book in the College Boys of New Haven series. It can be read as a standalone, but it’s more fun if you’ve read The Nerd Jock Conundrum and the free prequel novella. This is a sweet and steamy MMM romance featuring two nerds and a jock with a guaranteed HEA.

Okay, before I get into my review I just want to point out that for those people that are obsessive about reading a series in order like I am, you need to read the prequel called The Roommate Problem, only available by signing up for this author’s newsletter. This prequel is all about how Leo and Mason met and got together.

Book 1 in the series, The Nerd Jock Conundrum, also features all 3 characters in this story: Mason, Leo and Quinn.

Now all of that info aside, on to my review.

Leo and Mason have been dating for 2 years and Leo has graduated and is working now. Mason is in his last year of school, same as Quinn. They are all still roommates and have been for the last 2 years. Quinn is also somewhat of a slut and has a ton of one-night-stands that he randomly runs into again throughout this book. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Leo and Mason seem to be having some sort of relationship issues at the beginning of the book, kinda like a lull in intimacy and they aren’t really having sex all that much. I got the impression that Mason wasn’t all that interested in having sex with Leo or he wasn’t feeling horny or something?
We get a scene where Leo is at the pool to go for a swim and he’s checking out some other dude but starts feeling guilty.
Then later on, Mason starts feeling some type of way more than friendly toward Quinn and it seems like he feels guilty over that.

But then later on in the story Leo and Mason both say they’re secure enough in their relationship to admit sexual attraction to others and both of them don’t have issues with it and aren’t jealous in the least. So I guess I felt a bit better after that? But the whole scenario above made me uneasy until about 35% in.

So when we get Quinn feeling something for both Mason and Leo, and Mason admits to Leo that he has a crush on Quinn... it isn’t just one or two-sided but all 3 are having feelings for each other.

....and then they all 3 kiss and later on get all freaky with each other? Oh yeah, I’m totally feeling it now.

So I guess Mason’s libido has come back at this point. I’m still a bit confused over that issue from the beginning of the book because the three of them are getting it on constantly after they make it official. 🤔 It was almost as if they brought Quinn in to fix their relationship but later on in the story it’s said that it wasn’t like that.
“This wasn’t a desperate cry to save our relationship. Quite the opposite. This happened from the sheer strength of our relationship.”
I dunno, at the beginning it felt a bit of the opposite but okay then...

Anyway... aside from that I enjoyed it. I didn’t like the whole keeping secrets and lying that Leo did and ended up dragging Quinn into it. And then Mason kept a huge thing to himself that almost blew up in his face as well. Luckily it all worked out between them.

I ended the story feeling happy for all 3 of them. I’d say I enjoyed this story overall but mostly after the 35% mark. The beginning just didn’t give me good vibes.

I also felt a bit bothered when Quinn was like “I know, stupid” or “No, stupid...” referring to either Mason or Leo. Uhhh I wouldn’t enjoy being called that by my partner and he said this more than a few times.

Quinn also made fun of another side character, Blake’s, weight. It was supposed to be funny but I didn’t think so.
“Ever think of losing some weight?” ...
“But seriously, if you inflate a little more, we’ll charge you twice the rent.” ...
“You mind your big bear’s diet, girl. He’ll soon start rolling through the apartment.” ...
“I’m not jealous, I’m worried our insurance is gonna go up if they find out we have a boulder in the apartment,”

Yeah, I didn’t care for any of those comments and even if he was joking in a supposed good fun way, I didn’t like it.

The sex was pretty hot though. 🔥

3.5⭐️ for this one.

There is a prequel novella but I haven't read it, I think I might have liked Leo more if I had. Reading book 1 first is necessary.
I really liked Quinn and Mason and adored how this ended. Yet initially there were problems with the dialogue and characterisation, some of it strange and the characters were two dimensional. I didn't appreciate the lying both Mason and Leo did and there were a few things that bugged me. Fat shaming isn't cool. Some things were mentioned and then never explained. There are contradictions too.
It took me a while to warm up to it because of that. Once I did though, I enjoyed it. It was steamy in places but not overly so, with the characters separate journeys taking centre stage. The idea of them being a throuple was kind of secondary really.

I enjoyed this, but to be honest, had I known it was book 2 in a series, I’d have read book 1 first.

This has 3 roommates who form a triad. Mason and Leo are already a couple at the beginning, but each has a crush on Quinn and decide to invite him into the relationship.

Overall I liked the book and story, but I felt lost at times because there’s too many extra characters and it would have been nice to have some more backstory to explain how they fit.

I voluntarily read an ARC.

I had to DNF this around 40%. I just didn't like these characters and the writing felt off, for some reason. As much as I like the idea of MMM relationships, it seems it's a hard trope to pull off. In this book, the couple who becomes attracted to their roommate seem to find this attraction suddenly. There was some buildup, but I don't think the author made if as organic as it could have been.

I have not read the prequel but I did read the first in the series. I really enjoyed it and will have to read the prequel now. This story took me by surprise. Leo and Mason are completely committed yet feel something lacking. Since they live “with” Quinn and they spend plenty of time with him they grow attached to him. Quinn is a player looking for something but he isn’t sure what that something is. I’m not sure why Leo and Mason were having problems. I’m not sure what they originally expected Quinn to fill. I just know that it worked. The side issue with Leo’s dad gave me a little more insight into his personality and actions. I appreciate the author’s taking the time to explain the background of each of these three. I got a lot better feel for who they are. I enjoyed this story. I was happy to see how the author would put together such different personalities. I’m glad for the way it ended but I’m also looking forward to more from this series and hope to see more of these characters.

This is super sweet. The friendships between the three MC's are really solidly built up by the author before anything physical occurs between them as a trio, and they way they are with each other is relationship goals (mostly).

There's a little bit of non-communication but it's minor and so well balanced by the how open and honest Quinn, Leo and Mason are with each other the rest of the time.

I really enjoyed it.

The Three Hearts Equation (College Boys of New Haven 2)
By Hayden Hall
Published by the author, 2021
Four stars

A college-boy romance with a bit of a twist, “The Three-Hearts Equation” struck me with its sincerity, and the emotional authenticity I felt from its characters.

Mason and Leo are a “long term” couple (i.e. two years) who met in college at New Haven University. Quinn is one of their roommates, also a college kid, and the editor of the university magazine. Unlike his best friends, Quinn is a player, an archetypal one-night-only kind of guy. Leo works in a PR firm selling ad space, trying hard to make it on his own and support his boyfriend—so Mason can work on his art and make his own name in the world without having to hold down a job.

This kind of set-up always resonates with me, since I met my husband (of 46 years) in college (in the real New Haven, rather than this rather bucolic sounding fictional one). I also totally relate to the pressures of being 20 or 21 and not wanting to settle down when there are so many cute men to choose from in the world. If this was true in 1975, it’s even more true now, aided by technology and social acceptance.

What mattered most to me in reading this book was the fact that Hayden Hall seems to hit the emotional nail on the head. In the not-as-crazy-as-it-seems set up of Quinn gradually realizing he feels something more than friendship for his best-friend couple, the author treads very carefully, putting emotion before young lust, and marking a clear differentiation between the two. I fell in love with the first man I ever kissed, so I know this is possible; but I also know that it’s not always a story that is well told, especially with the looming complication of a triad in the mix.

There is a good bit of interest in the characters in that both Mason and Quinn have had less-than-ideal childhoods, while Leo was raised in both love and luxury by his rich parents. The surprise here is what turns the plot upside down.

I am always irritated when authors of m/m romance put too much sex into their story without making it feel real or emotionally authentic. Writing an intimate scene is an art, not a science. I was glad to see that Hall, who proclaims these books to be intentionally spicy, does this in a way that, like the plot, differentiates between lust and feeling. It matters in the impact that the book has, at least for a reader like me. I’ve enjoyed this series thus far and will keep adding them to my library.

Let me just start by saying that you need to have read the prequel, The Roommate Problem. This will give you the beginning of the relationship between Leo and Mason. This one focuses again on Leo and Mason, but also on how they discover that their best friend, Quinn, fits into their life perfectly. It’s a light read with minimal angst, and a very sweet friendship that develops organically into a beautiful MMM romance. Although the characterisation and some of the dialogue felt strange in the beginning, I quickly warmed up to their personalities. I think the fact that their friendship is so solid helps the romantic relationship as well. Leo and Mason are already super sweet together, and it doesn’t feel forced with Quinn at all. Sweet and steamy, with just the right amount of cuddles!

Spice: 🌶🌶🌶

I haven’t read a lot of MMM, but this was everything I needed it to be.

Leo, Mason, and Quinn were great together and separately. They each had their own storylines and backstories that gave them depth and drew you in. Quinn was my favorite, a little snarky a little bit of a smart ass. I was here for it. His doubts about being left behind broke your heart and I was left wanting to protect him.

Leo’s plot line really kept me hooked. We read and listen about corrupt CEO embezzling money, but rarely do we think about the consequences that the family is left with. My heart broke for his poor mother having to flee New Haven to escape from the scrutiny of her husband’s actions.

The spicy scenes were absolute perfection. The few times I have read MMM I am always interested to see the balance, are all three characters active or is one left on the sidelines? All three MCs were involved and kept the heat up for these scenes.

I am loving this series so far, but it’s Hayden Hall so I assumed I would love it. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.

If you want to dive into this book with a backstory, you'll need the prequel The Roommate Problem which is available through the author's newsletter - I saw someone mentioning this and thought it was worth repeating.

Leo and Mason are our established couple. They have their ups and downs but are sweet to one another, you know this if you read The Nerd Jock Conundrum - though, it's not really needed. Quinn, our sassy queen here - whom I've loved since book one, he's Leo and Mason's roommate and is in his last year alongside Mason while Leo is already out in the working world (good luck, I hate it sometimes xD)

Our MCs, like every other angsty-sort-of-teenager-not-really-teenager romance, have communication issues and despite loving each other (speaking of Mason and Leo here) they feel guilty over things that could be considered natural and normal if spoken out loud or simply shared and found out if the other felt the same. They say to be confident in each other's feelings and no jealousy, but feeling guilty doesn't add up to that description.

My lovely Quinn came to save the day and the relationship without actually knowing he was saving it at first. There was the burn and acknowledgment of feelings and it turned out that every one of this triad was feeling something toward the other. Our established couple towards Quinn and vice-versa. The explanation as to why they invited Quinn into their relationship felt forced and fake but the feelings behind it were not. There was desperation and longing coming through the pages while the MCs denied that was true. So, there's that.

Aside from this, I'm a huge fan of triads and I'm glad these guys worked it out. More so, I love how wise beyond his age Quinn can be at times, and despite the secrets and lies from Leo and Mason, we are able to see their love bloom and get great sex scenes.

These are the highlights for me; good and bad and meh.
- BAD: THE FAT "JOKES" - just no.
- GOOD: The way they fell into poly so easily and the sex scenes.
- MEH: The lack of communication blowing things out of proportion (but I know this is me and not the book because we need a plot and college has tons of drama).

The Three Hearts Equation is a fabulously delightful menage romance. This Hayden Hall had me captured and smiling throughout.

Mason and Leo are a couple at the start, with their roommate Quinn being a good friend and roommate. And then...

I love everything about this trio. The feelings are there at the start and I adore how they finally make a move. And damn, they're hot together.

I love how they work together and mesh so naturally. If you're expecting a lot of angst concerning the trio itself, you won't be finding that here. Just look somewhere else if you're in the mood for angst.

This is about the relationship between the three men, how they all deal with some issues, and Leo's big problem.

Leo's job is a big part of this story, as his father's crimes affect Leo's reputation. His response includes embarrassment, secrets, and a whole lot of shame. Everything Leo goes through is sad, and made worse by his pride.

The Three Hearts Equation is perfect the next time you're in the mood for an established couple adding a third into their relationship. I absolutely adore every single moment of this Hayden Hall gem.

I love polyamorous relationships in every form so I was excited to start this one. Especially after reading both Jackson and Troy’s story snd how Leo snd Mason got together. Hat really got me we’re the things that I normally wouldn’t like in a story not only worked here but in some cases totally made the story. I marked this as containing spoilers so I could explain that. First off I tend to get uncomfortable and disconnected from the story when I read about an MC having sex with someone other than the other MC or MCs as in here. Knowing it happened is one thing but living through it is another. Yet here I think it made Quinn’s mindset and emotional state better to understand. Also, when Jackson and Troy were in a few scenes it was handled just right. A lot of times previous characters unless they are family or live or work with the current mcs they are forgotten about or when they do come up it seems forced. Not so here. And the last thing I usually don’t like is when they move away. That usually looks like they are escaping. Here we know why they aren’t around much. Plus Jackson is a great friend and this book would that.

This was another fun story in the College Boys of New Haven series. Leo and Mason are still very much in love after two years despite their bedroom issues. Quinn is still their wise cracking friend and roommate. Feelings start to develop past friendship as the three hang out more at home. While each is navigating through their own personal problems, the support they show each other proves to be just what each one needed. Leo, Mason, and Quinn are playful, sweet, and so hot together. It was nice seeing characters return from the first book in the series.

I loved all three of these wonderful guys! Hayden Hall has proven once again that they are a wonderful writer. Quirky characters and MMM plot kept me involved in the story. Plus they are hot together, car for each other and support each other, so I was happy that they could make things work as a triad. You should read the first book called The Roommate Problem first to gain some idea on how they got together, if not you might be slightly confused at first. There is slow burn, some angst but an easy read. Enjoy.

I really enjoyed this book! Mason and Leo were so sweet together....total couples goals. I just wanted to wrap Quinn up in the biggest hug though! He uses humor and one night stands to hide the fact that deep down, he just wants someone to WANT him, just as he is. Mason, Leo, and Quinn are best friends that have the potential to be so much more if they can just embrace how they truly feel about each other. This book had drama, sweetness, and smoking hot passion!

This story is so sweet. The friendships are excellent, first off, then you have the romantic aspect which is perfect. The three complete each other beautifully. The story is sweet with an element of shyness as they approach this new situation. The dynamics are just fun. This book is just so good, easy to read and very, very enjoyable. I loved it. I really enjoyed this story. These three just completely fit together. Two people with an epic, strong romance and the best friend that just seems to blend in. I really enjoyed reading this story and I liked seeing a little glimpse of previous characters. This was really well written.

So sweet

This may seem a bit odd, as this is not a “straightforward” (pun intended) romance, but this is an almost classic take on friends to lovers and it as as sweet as spun sugar with enough substance to make it fulfilling.

To be honest here peeps I read this book for Quinn. I loved the glimpses of him in book 1 The Nerd Jock Conundrum. He was sassy and flirty and a total manslut so of course I wanted to see him fall in love. With Quinn's background I thought it might be difficult enough for him to let his guard down to fall in love with a one man, nevermind two. Not to mention Mason and Leo are already an established couple who are so very much in love. I would think it would be daunting joining a couple that settled. But Quinn wouldn't be who he was if he didn't take on the difficult things and push his way through. He is much stronger than his small frame suggests.

I liked the dynamic between the three men. Leo is the protector, Mason is the sweetheart who they can both dote on, and Quinn is the sunshine who can make either of them smile when it's needed. He also isn't afraid to protect those he loves. The three of them make up a unit and though they have some issues with miscommunication in the start, they work through it as a throuple and are better for it. Honesty is very important in poly relationships and it is something they all strive to be.

I only have one little teeny tiny niggle. Quinn mentions to Mason in the beginning that both of them are bottoms so it wasn't like they would hook up. Later is the book it is made clear from both Quinn's words and actions that Quinn is very much versatile. It was a tad confusing, but not enough to take anything away from the story. I mean Quinn being the meat in a Mason and Leo sandwich was very hot indeed. No complaints on the steam from me.

I always find it harder to review a book when it's somewhere in the middle, not a favourite but not the worst.....
We start with Leo and Mason as an established couple. I didn't know until reading other reviews that there is a prequel novella of the beginning of their relationship but I think you can read this without it, though would probably enhance the story overall if you did. Quinn is their roommate in a shared house with a couple of other people. He's enjoying living life and the hookups he has and it's not until further into the book that he realises his attraction to Mason, and Leo, which for me kind of comes out of nowhere. There's no lingering looks or subtle thoughts leading up to that moment of I might be in love with my best friend. Leo and Mason's relati8seems to be a bit stagnant before involving Quinn, full of love for each other and happy together but nothing physical except kisses and cuddles though they make it clear he's not there to fix their relationship, just to expand it to include him. It's a very quick move from friends to lovers and it feels quite natural between them, easily moving between snuggles on the sofa to more heated times in the bedroom.
There is drama in regards to Leo's father being investigated and arrested for fraud which is big news in their town. It doesn't just affect his family though, having a bigger impact on Leo's career. This leads to secret keeping but he's not the only one in the relationship to do so.
For me, The Three Hearts Equation was a little choppy in its writing, not something that flowed well, moving between thoughts, emotions and scenes. It made it hard for me to become really taken in by the story. I enjoyed the characters themselves and the relationship that they develop but it does take a while to really get moving.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

You would think that after being in a relationship for years, things get settled. You are with the love of your life, and life can't be better, except...it can.

Mason & Leo had their fair share of problems to get to the point they are now, but they were happy. They had each other, and that was what mattered the most.

Quinn was living his best life, partying, hooking up, school, and friends. What can he want more when he was a commitmentphobe through and through?

Mason, Leo, and Quinn were friends, the best of them, but somehow nothing happened until one day everything changed. I don't think it took them so long because nothing was there, quite the opposite, but I think it didn't because it wasn't the right time.

I think the tension between them grew, and grew, and grew until they couldn't ignore it any longer. I also think Mason & Leo were just waiting for Quinn to be ready for them. They stood by his side while he lived his best life, enjoying his youth. They cheered for him, held him together, and when the time was right, they took the chance.

I loved how soft their love is. How patient. I loved how M&L gave Quinn all the time and space in the world to become the best version of himself before taking the huge step of committing, not only with one, but with two people. They got his back, and Q had theirs. It progressed naturally, and it was very careful with Q's heart, which was fragile... and that made me love them even more.

Looking at these 3 together, I think it was only natural for them to gravitate towards each other. Love is too powerful to let things get in the way.

Ahhh, I love them. I just wish the book was a bit longer, ngl...

4.75✨️ - I really, really recommend this book if an MMM, best friends to lovers ( established couple ) is what you are looking for.

Title - The Three Hearts Equation
Author - Hayden Hall
Genre - MM Romance
Published - May 2021
Pages - 248 Pages

Summary - Mason has loved Leo from the moment he met him, Leo has always looked after Mason and now it's Mason's turn to look after Leo.
Leo's carried everyone else's problems on his shoulders for a long time now when his dad is arrested and destroys his whole families lives in a matter of days. It's time for Leo to lean on someone else for a change.
Quinn has never wanted a relationship, he a hump and dump kinda guy, he loves Mason and Leo there his best friends. Suddenly though he can't stop thinking about them both. What can happen when you add three hearts to the equation?

What I thought about this book - This book was a slow burner for me, It started to get going about 50% into it. I'm not a huge fan of slow burners however, that being said I did enjoy this book. I loved the characters of Mason, Leo and Quinn. My favourites being Mason and Quinn. I don't know why I didn't take to Leo as much as I did Mason and Quinn. These three really make a cute thruple. Character development was good, Plot was good, well written. Overall an enjoyable read.

So although I picked up this book because it said it could be read as a standalone, and to a certain point that's true; however, I think there would be benefit to reading the first book in the series so as to have a fuller picture of the dynamic and their friends. The only reason I've dropped a star is because I think you do benefit from the first book.

Saying that as someone who hasn't read the first book I still enjoyed this book. It has depth with plenty of layers to the story; there is loads of emotions in play swinging between happy and sad, angst and joy, hurt and comfort too. Each of the main three characters have very distinct personalities which show great progression and growth through out the book, not just as individuals but together. Each character has a great backstory with links into the main storyline, which I assume were first formed in the series opener.

Whilst the story is slow burn it still moves with good pace; there wasn't any stumbling along. It moved nice and smoothly between the three main characters drawing them closer together with each chapter. The scenes are hot, there's a bit of humour, there's a bit of drama, there's actually a bit of everything to keep this reader happy.

I'm a first time reader of Hayden Hall and I wasn't disappointed, in fact I've got the first in the series in my kindle to read right now!

I enjoyed this book and totally recommend that you add it to your kindle today xx

Mason, Leo and Quinn are so adorable. Mason and Leo are an established couple from the first book, they’ve been together for two years now and are going through a bit of a dry spell. Quinn meanwhile, also lives with them and is secretly pining for both his best friend, Mason, and Leo.
Leo has finished uni and is working, though not enjoying it. Mason and Quinn are still finishing school, and bond over the school magazine where Quinn works. While their futures are building, Leo is faced with his family falling apart over his fathers actions which then impacts his work and his relationship with Mason and Quinn.
It was interesting in this that the conflict was a mix of external and internal factors. For Leo, his work life begins to turn south, and when Quinn discovers what is happening, it adds another layer to the conflict, even if it’s largely unknown about at that point. In books like this, where it’s three characters in a relationship, communication is so important, and of course this is something that comes up. Quinn is in a position where even though he’s known the other two for some time, he’s still the new one in the relationship, and is concerned about being ion the outside.
In the end though, these three are gorgeous. They’re a sweet triad that works really well together. I’m really hoping to see another book, because I loved seeing Troy and Jackson from The Nerd Jock Conundrum, so if I can see these three show up in another book I will be so happy.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book.

I'd give this 2.5 stars.

First, this doesn't really stand alone. You really should read the first book in this series in order to meet all the characters involved.

Secondly, this book was confused. Mason felt like a character created without any concrete idea on his persona. At the beginning of the book, we find a meek, boy who doesn't want to have sex with his boyfriend. It seems that he doesn't enjoy being intimate any longer and Leo feels like they are just going through a rough spot. Beyond that, Mason turns into some kind of sex fiend. It seems that Mason was just bored with Leo and Quinn came in to save the day.

As for Leo, he gave off serious Daddy vibes and I honestly liked his character the best. He's embroiled in a scandal that rocks him to his core, he loses just about everything. He fights hard to keep his relationship afloat as well as his life.

Quinn is an asshole. He constantly calls people stupid and his comments about Blake being fat were overdone. Let's hope that's not how the author feels in real life, because yuck.

All in all the main issue was the lying by both Leo and later Mason. The sex was meh as was the overall book.

As an aside, I read the first book in order to prepare for this book. I liked that book much better.

*I receive an ARC of this book, but all my thoughts and opinions are my own.*

The scillintating dynamics of the indeterminable equation that is love, finds meaning in the New Haven universe.
(Haha! Had to nerd that one out ;)

Going in, I have to admit that I am not the biggest fan of the MMM genre (My readers’ heart is too possessive), but after reading the prequel novella (something that I highly recommend) and intrigued by Quinn’s character in book#1, I was really looking forward to this one.

The tale starts off highlighting the relationship problems and insecurities Mason and Leo are facing and how the duo over time realise that their banter with Quinn is not just friendly. I really liked the way Author Hall showed us the depth of the bond the trio shared even in the initial stages of the story.
There seemed to be a lot of miscommunication, but I am guessing that’s realistic and bound to happen when there are three heart’s involved.
I really liked the pace of the story and the kiss scene between the throuple was lit.

I did have some qualms over a few parts, but overall it was a well-written and adorable romance. Looking forward to the next books in this series.

Recommend to those looking for a sweet, fluffy and steamy MMM tale.
