My star is rising, and I shine. Always.

Serenity Ward is the golden girl of Kaycie. She never questioned her city's status as the last dry land on earth. The Establishment takes care of its citizens...or so she thought. But now she's seen the map.

Why would they lie about other islands just beyond the horizon? In a city built on falsehood, figuring out who to trust is its own challenge, but Serenity pulls together a feisty group who all want the same thing--an end to the government which has hidden a world from them.

Bram's anger drives his own desire for revolution. Being from another island, he was selected to be a brainwashed marshal in service to Kaycie, but he knows what's going on all too well. Hidden in plain sight, he is ready to draw blood to free the islands. Only dealing with Serenity is the one thing he wasn't prepared for.

Can two people who were never supposed to meet stop fighting each other long enough to remember who the enemy is?

I needed this to count toward my reading goal. If things get dire, I’ll add in the two or three other times I’ve read it this year.

Absolutely loved this book! It was a fun and somewhat light read, up until the end when it’s still fun but becomes more real and heavy. The first part of this book is great, but I couldn’t put it down once I got to the second part. The author did a great job setting us up for book 2, which I can’t wait for.

Serenity is the perfect citizen. She thinks the establishment provides everything the citizens need; food, healthcare, equality. She soon finds she has been a slave to the system and discovers her world isn’t as perfect as she originally thought. Then she joins the uprising.

She meets new friends and forms unbreakable bonds. With these friends by her side, they attempt to take down the establishment.

This book felt like a mix between the world in The Hunger Games, in the capital, and the society in The Giver, but with feelings.

Natalie did a great job with her debut novel. Her tik toks are a lot of fun too! Highly recommend!

I am the first to tell people that I don't usually find myself reading dystopian novels. But this one was different. It caught me by surprise and I had to stick around to find out what happened.

The first few chapters I didn't think were very necessary, or they could have easily been condensed. The reader was introduced to a lot of characters and we didn't really know much at that point, so when we heard about a few of them many chapters later, I was like...who, again? I think due to the fact that I don't usually read this type of book, it was hard for me to follow for a little while. I don't think this will be the case if you're a fan of the genre. The switching perspectives had me having to go back a few times to check who it was that we were reading about again.

Once the big actions started falling into place and the main story started getting ramped up, I couldn't put this book down. The characters are lovable. The plot is amazing and reminiscent of Hunger Games. The romantic subplot is *chefs kiss* and if you aren't Team Jase, I don't want to hear your opinion because it's probably wrong.

This book tugged at my heart strings and kept me on the edge of my seat. The only thing I'm mad about is the fact that I have to wait so long to get the sequel!

There’s no better way to comment on the human condition than through a dystopian novel. Serenity lives in a seemingly perfect world where each family only has one child, food, fun, and work life are all planned out. However, because nothing is ever perfect, Serenity soon learns the truth about her life, her family and her friends through her encounter with Sophia and Bram at the ever important Establishment Center.

As the truth begins to unravel, Serenity discovers the importance of true friendship, trust and knowledge. The plot is fast-paced and the suspense is palpable. In this debut novel, Cammaratta, has created a world and characters that readers will want to experience again and again in the rest of the series to come.

I am a SUCKER for dystopian novels.
Falling & Uprising did not disappoint. Set in the country of Kaycie. Colorful outfits, wild hair and makeup. Upper class citizens with not a care in the world. Sounds like the Capital from the Hunger Games right? Serenity Ward is the poster child of Kaycie. She is known and loved by everyone. She is the definition of Kaycie. Then her world comes crumbling down as she find out Kaycie is not the last dry land in existence as she has beloved her whole life but one of many others. She joins the uprising determined to bring down the establishment and give equality to all. Along brooding Bram and charismatic Jase this is a book you don’t want to miss. The story is told in two POVs, Bram and Serenity which definitely made the story so much better. My only complaint? I need book two ASAP!

Five glittery, gold stars for Natalie Cammaratta's debut Falling & Uprising. It has all the makings of what you want and need from YA dystopia, but with a uniquely woven plot, world, and characters that keep you hooked from the first page. And speaking of first page, the wardrobe, the dresses, every outfit description had me drooling for a wardrobe straight from Cammaratta's imagination. Serenity is raised by the Establishment to be who and what they have defined. Molded into their version of the person she has been chosen to be. But with her blindfold removed, she rises and finds herself and love while doing so.

In her debut novel, author Natalie Cammaratta comes clicking in bright red heels down the publishing runway and thrusts a dystopian novel unlike any other into the spotlight! The world she paints is beautiful -full of color and fashion- but like any true dystopian story, a contrasting darkness lies just beneath the surface. The interpersonal relationships between all of the characters is so delicately woven that you feel as if you are right there with them. My only complaint? Book two needs to be released sooner!

I knew from chapter one that this was a book that would be near impossible to put down once I started. Immediately, you are drawn into the lively character of Serenity Ward and despite her living as a celebrity in a futuristic dystopian world, Natalie does a fantastic job at making Serenity be relatable and real, whether we see ourselves in her or our loved ones. She is young, living in an extreme and pretty-packaged version of our society-tells-you-how-to-be world. It is so easy to love her. Sometimes books with lore different to our real world can make it difficult to understand and connect to, but throughout the whole novel I felt as though I was part of it. The main characters interact with the world in gradual ways, easing the reader into their realities until it feels like our own, which truly made the novel come to life and fun to read as I didn't spend half of it deciphering what was going on.

Speaking of the other characters, I want to talk about the other point of view that carries this novel, Bram. I found him to be the perfect alternate point of view to tell the story from. If Serenity is the hopeful, bouncing light in the book, Bram is her exact opposite with his outwardly angrier, jaded view on the world and other people. It creates the perfect contrast to illustrate how at complete odds the very world inside the novel is, and how much of it is real, how much of it is an illusion, and where they might meet in the middle. His development is opposite to Serenity's, until they reach a center point where they become balanced equals further balanced by the other characters, that also balances the tone of the book. His struggles and his voice is also relatable on a very relatable, and sometimes very real and familiar, level which made seeing the world through his eyes all that more impactful.

Bram's tone is also a brilliant contrast to Serenity's, but also an incredible compliment with their bantering that seems to genuinely understand each other. Which brings me to my next point: Every interaction in the novel between characters was phenomenally real. Not only is every character unique with their own voice and style that shines through like a real person's, but their interpersonal dynamics as well. When Serenity's found family friends banter, I felt like I was listening to my own group of friends; when she spoke to Sophos, I felt like I was witnessing an out of body interaction with my own mentor figures; and so on. It made the story feel that much more alive to me, and that much easier to get invested. Even more specifically, her relationship with Vogue is touching, and at times painful to read as they really are each other's platonic soul mates, something that is hard to find in media despite it being a very real thing.

Without bringing spoilers up, something else that was cleverly implemented throughout the story was the story's very plot. There are times in novels where it feels as though the plot is put on hold for the personal developments to take place and vice versa, but in Falling and Uprising they are intrinsically connected. The catalyst to the main plot is introduced early, and so the rest of the novel snowballs from that beginning point, taking every single character's development along with it, and alongside each other. They each break down and grow and reveal parts of themselves that not even they knew existed along the way in such a natural manner that you, as the reader, grows with them, not even realizing how much has changed until you've reached the last page and reflect.

The plot twists are fun, set up in ways that aren't easy to predict but make sense and fall together like puzzle pieces then they arise; and the very end of the novel is a twist of its own, setting up the start to the rest of the series cleverly. I'm almost mad to have finished, because all I want to do is reread it until book two comes out.

Summarizing, this was a compelling novel with realistic, relatable characters and dynamics that drove along a plot expertly woven into not only their interpersonal relationships and backstories, but also the very foundation of the world. This is a beautiful story with gorgeous themes and visuals, but also such a powerful message of self discovery and authenticity, something that gave me chills at times while reading.

This couldn't have been a more powerful debt novel, and I so look forward to not only the rest of the series, but all of Cammaratta's future works.

This series has an intriguing and riveting storyline. Following a catastrophic event there is just one place left habitable. In its well organised and orchestrated existence the young are channelled into appropriate lifestyle and career choices with some, such as Serenity Ward enjoying life as an influencer and trend setter. With no other options of where to live, the majority are more than happy to be fed and pampered through life.

However as lies are uncovered, a sense of injustice and revulsion of how warped their world is, brings together a group of young people intent on revolution. As the story gathers pace, surprising allies to the cause and even those behind the insurrection are uncovered as are those who have no desire to upset the status quo.

The characters are great including the marshall Bram who is more aware of the inequality and manipulation than his comrades. Serenity at first comes across as a girl with glitter on her mind rather than a more serious outlook on life, but when challenged with the truth reveals a very different side to her nature. Their relationship is tense and volatile as their group of resistance fighters expands and they head into the day of reckoning.

In this first book we follow the planning and execution of the uprising and meet the main players. There is a rollercoaster of emotions and love and loss threaten to derail the plans being put into action. It is fast paced and kept flowing with great narrative from the various points of view which engages the reader from the first page.

Being the first book of three, it of course ends on a cliffhanger and I am looking foward to catching up with the action in books two and three. I can highly recommend getting into the series with this book.

It's been a while since I read a dystopian, but this book made me remember everything I love about the genre. All the secrets boiling beneath the surface of a utopian society, where nothing is as it is portrayed to be.
Serenity is part of the elite, the wealthy, fashion shows and champagne are the norm. But her standing in society is exactly the reason she is recruited to help lead a rebellion. When her eyes are opened to a world bigger than she knew, to the sacrifices made for Kaycie to be the perfect city it is, she can't go back to how things were. She could never be content to sip champagne and care about movies and fashion when there are people suffering unknown.
Bram is from an island that isn't known to exist, where the children are forced to work or become marshals to serve the people of Kaycie. Bram has to keep constant control over his emotions and reactions because he isn't supposed to have any. But he can move around the city unquestioned, as long as it looks like he is doing his job.
I just loved everything about this. I loved getting Bram's POV, especially since e does have to be so guarded, it was great to see all the thoughts he can't always express. Serenity is an amazing character too, I really love her character arc- the way the things she once love start to leave a sour taste in her mouth, it makes it harder and harder for her to pretend to be the same girl she used to be. There are just so many great characters in this, and I found myself devouring this book. That ending...gahh...I'm dying, I CAN't wait to find out what happens next.
This book is a great fit for fans of the Matched series, Divergent, or any dystopian. It makes me want to go find more dystopians to read while I anxiously wait for the 2nd book.

Serenity is essentially Kaycian royalty. But when she discovers that everything she knew about her island is a lie, how far will she go to right the wrongs that her society has perpetuated for years?

I absolutely adored this book! I loved Serenity as a main character because I loved watching her growth throughout the book. She has so many things thrown at her, and she allows them to make her stronger in the end. Her introspection and how in touch she was with her own thoughts and feelings was refreshing! Not to mention Bram and his own journey was heartbreaking and lovely all at once!

I adored the worldbuilding and the way that this book brought me back to the dystopian era but also aged it up, so to speak. The premise of this book is so interesting and fun to me because it's unlike anything that I've read before and it's definitely unlike any dystopian novel I have read before. It sort of lent a mystery aspect because of all the secrets and figuring out that the characters must do.

And don't get me started on all the feelings this book gave me! By the end, I was so wrapped up in everything that I literally couldn't put it down because I absolutely needed to know what was going to happen. The way the characters are written makes them so relatable and loveable that you can't help but getting wrapped up in their lives. And the moment I finished it, my heart was screaming for the next one!

If you're looking for a dystopian book that will make you feel all the feels, this is the book for you!

This book was incredible! I'm a big fan of dystopian tales (Hunger Games & Divergent, as cliché as that sounds, are two of my favorite books in that subgenre) but Cammaratta easily keeps pace with those juggernauts and makes a voice and story all her own. The story is delivered from two POV's (Serenity, a Kaycian citizen who has a flair for the classy life and fashion) and Bram (an islander who becomes a marshal in the city of Kaycie). However, when Serenity is chosen to be part of a special operation, her world is turned upside down and does everything she can to help right the injustice and lies she has been told by the Establishment in Kaycie. Both characters are strong, the secondary characters are a delight as well and well-thought out in terms of their personalities and traits. It was fast paced, but easy to follow, and I will definitely be getting to book two as soon as I can come 2023!

I loved Natalie Cammaratta's debut novel Falling & Uprising. It is a dystopian novel set in the utopian world of Kaycie. The main character, Serenity, is the poster child of Kaycie in the beginning - until she learns the truth about the world around her. I loved the changes Serenity made in the novel and how she grew as a person. The second half of this book was intense and had me turning the pages frantically to see what happened. I cannot wait for book 2 in this series - I need some answers!

All of the characters were believable and the plot had some unexpected twists and turns. The book reminded me of a mash-up of Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Giver and is perfect for adults or young adults.

Highly recommend!

As an avid fan of dystopian books, all I can say is WOW! This book was so good! On the island of Kaycie everything seems pretty ideal. There is no hunger or poverty, everyone is assigned the perfect job at the age of 16, there's almost no conflict or suffering, and that's because Kaycie is the last remaining dry land on earth. The establishment makes sure that everyone is fully provided for and life is great.

Until it's not. Serenity Ward is the poster child for life on Kaycie. She is a young socialite with powerful friends and family who's biggest concern is what outfit she is going to wear that day. When she is assigned to leadership, her entire world is turned upsidedown. Turns out, Kaycie may not be as self-sufficient as the government would have it's citizens believe. When Serenity learns the truth that there are in fact other islands, and that Kaycie thrives on the backs of those citizens, she decides to join the resistance and fight to change the entire system. Regardless of how comfortable her life has been, she knows that what is happening is wrong.

Natalie not only wrote a fantastic story, and a badass main character, but she gave us AMAZING side characters as well. Bram: the young soldier from another island, Sophos: the government muckymuck who is organizing the resistance, Vogue: the witty and supportive bestie, and a handful of other rebels who come together to try and make things better for EVERYONE not just the Kaycians. The character development we see from the whole group is just wonderful, and I absolutely picked favorites. (Team Bram, just saying)

If you are a fan of The Hunger Games, Divergent or the Uglies series, you will absolutely love this book! That being said, I must now yell at Natalie Cammarata: *clears throat* WHERE IS BOOK TWO?! I NEED IT, SO HELP ME, I WILL NOT KNOW PEACE UNTIL I HAVE ANSWERS, NATALIE!!! That is all, thank you. 😘

If you're looking for an introspective MC, this is the book for you. Serenity Ward goes through so many changes and comes of age in a really neat way in general, but especially for a dystopian novel. Natalie created a world that not only felt like home but really made you think about certain aspects of real-life - as a good dystopian novel should. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it is a little slow at parts, and the technological aspects can be somewhat difficult to pick up on at first. However, once the plot really starts picking up, it's suspenseful and fun to read.

I would highly recommend this to any fan of YA, and can't wait for the next one!

Serenity Ward is as popular as anyone can be. She never questioned that she’s living in the only remaining dry land in the world.

The Establishment takes care of its citizens, or so she thought… When Serenity is shown a map that there are several islands beyond the horizon, she starts to question everything. They are not alone…

She needs to figure out who to trust and how to end a government which has hidden a world from them and is keeping many (dark) secrets.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book! And can’t wait to see how the story continues.

Oh my gosh THIS BOOK 🤩

It had a great start, interesting characters and the plot moves at a perfect pace. But oh my gosh- it just gets better with every chapter you read. I can not wait for the next book, I’m going to have a very hard time waiting actually.

I have been a fan of dystopian novels my whole life, from Hunger Games and Divergent to Brave New World. Falling & Uprising hits that sweet spot for me. There’s just enough unknown, enough romance and friendship it has landed itself among my top 10 favorite books/series. A lot of events went in directions that were unexpected and the end was just enough of a cliffhanger to leave you wanting more. Really hating that I have to wait for the next book in the series 😅

I love a good YA dystopian book, and FALLING AND UPRISING, the debut novel from Natalie Cammaratta did not disappoint! Told in alternating POV, FALLING AND UPRISING follows socialite Serenity and marshal Bram as they navigate a society built on lies and the revolution that has been brewing for many years.

Everyone in Kaycie knows that their city is the last dry haven for humans. Kaycians enjoy a life of prosperity, safety, and glamour. Serenity thinks she has it all, until she learns the truth. The Establishment has lied to its citizens. Other islands exist, their main purpose being to provide goods and labor to the glittering city of Kaycie. There is a major imbalance and people from the islands are suffering. Young people taken from their families, their memories erased, and forced into zombie-like service as marshals in Kaycie.

When Serenity learns the truth and is offered a chance to make a difference, she takes it -- much to Bram’s surprise. He’s known the truth for a long time, having been born on one of the other islands and rescued by Sophos, Serenity’s mentor and one of the revolution’s key leaders. FALLING AND UPRISING has a nice balance of dystopia, sci-fi tech, and YA glamour.

I found myself immersed in Cammaratta’s vivid details -- I would love some of the fabulous clothing worn by Serenity and her best friend Vogue. The story moved well, and I never felt bogged down with techno-babble. The connection between Serenity and Bram worked for me--I liked their prickly beginnings and enjoyed watching the two very different personalities find common ground and respect for each other. Serenity’s attraction and relationship with Jase, another member of their revolutionary team had a few sizzling moments and it’ll be interesting to see what happens with those two in the next book.

The reader is left hanging a bit at the end as there is another book coming. However, many threads are tied up nicely, but I found myself saying---WAIT, MORE! I wanted to continue reading and will be anxiously awaiting the next book!

I had so much fun reading this book! Falling and Uprising is everything a YA dystopian novel should be. I adore the world Natalie Cammaratta has created, and I just want to know more about it.

Here is the premise: Earth has flooded. The only remaining civilization is the island of Kaycie. But that's ok, because they have managed to build quite an idyllic society- except they haven't. Kaycie can only support itself through the coerced labor of neighboring islands they keep hidden from their population.

We learn about the opulence and oppression of Kaycie through Bram's and Serenity's eyes. Serenity is a prominent young woman starting her career in Kaycie's Establishment (government), Bram a young marshall who is not what he should be- that is a chemically lobotomized islander doing Kaycie's bidding.

As their two perspective bring us deeper into the uprising to overthrow the Establishment and liberate the Islands, Natalie Cammaratta delights us with the entanglements of young love, and developing identities. It is just as messy and intense as you would expect.

The ending left me with so many questions and theories. I'm excited to see what Natalie Cammaratta writes for us next in this series.

Sidenote: As a reader in the Kansas City area (KC- Kaycie, get it?) this book was such a treat. I jumped at every geographical reference, and was so tickled to even see Blue Springs, MO (my town) as one of the secret islands!

For someone who doesn't really like dystopian novels, I shamelessly enjoyed this book and read it without blinking.
Gorgeous imaginary, great characters, and a gripping plot; all wrapped in a cozy narrative that portrayed a convoluted world, without being emotionally exhausting. I don't like dystopian because everything feels so hopeless the entire time. What's different about Falling & Uprising is how despite the urgency and importance of their mission, they never lose sight of what's important: their values, their humanity. I enjoyed the lighthearted moments and playful banter as much as the action and intrigue.
The first 70% of the book is a mix of tense calm and personal discovery, in preparation for the imminent rebellion. But I held my breath for the next 20%... exciting, action-packed, and intense! What happened with the last 10%, you might be wondering? I just died. What an ending. I can't wait for the next book to arrive!
Now, if you excuse me, I'll go pick my jaw from the floor.

Wow - an amazing, intense and beautifully written YA Dystopian book. This seriously needs to be made into a TV Show (Netflix get on this)!!!

Natalie has created such an immersive story with Amazing world building and beautiful character development.

The world has been covered by water in a great flood many years ago and only one island remains where the establishment runs everything, even choosing what jobs people will have. Serenity soon learns that they are not alone and this is a lie from the Establishment - there are other islands across the sea. Thrust from her glittering high society life into helping and planning a revolution - she doesn’t know who to trust.

I love that we get to see the story from Serenity’s POV as well as Bram - a Marshall/ soldier from across the sea who escaped having his memories erased and becoming a mindless blank robot.

Mystery, Adventure and Love?
This book has everything and I can’t wait for book 2!!

This book was short, but packed a solid punch, especially at the end. I read this book while traveling and it was a perfect story to accompany me on my travels.

I got some Hunger Games vibes while reading this, which was great and I adored the female main character, Serenity. This is the first in a series and I cannot wait to continue reading more!

Falling and Uprising is the debut novel of Natalie Cammaratta and it is definitely a must read! The book follows Serenity Ward as she navigates the beginning of her life as a citizen of Kaycie in the Leadership track of careers. Kaycie is an island; the only island in the flooded world. Kaycie exists in a dystopian world. The Establishment has created a world where everyone has their career track, and everyone has everything they may need. Except when Serenity begins her career in Leadership, her world is turned upside down. There's more than one island, the career track are just made up, the marshal aren't robots. What else is going on on Kaycie and in the Establishment? Can Serenity handle it as her world is thrown into chaos and what is Serenity willing to do to bring balance to the worlds?

The story is told through dual perspectives. Through Serenity Ward, Kaycie's golden girl. She is the picture of what citizens should be on Kaycie. High heels, make-up and all the latest fashion designs. She is her image and her world revolves around creating the perfect public persona. Her worth is determined by what people think of her as she in destined to become a leader in the Establishment. When she starts her career, her mentor breaks the news to her and recruits her to his movement. The only issue is, she must not tell anyone or anything. Oh yeah.. and she has no idea who is involved in this plot. The other main character is Bram. He's from one of the islands that Serenity just was told about. His job is to act as a marshal. Being selected as a marshal was supposed to lead to a better life. But instead, the islanders are turned into brainwashed robots. Bram escaped this fate and now is ready to start the uprising. Except now, Kaycie's golden girl is involved.... Kaycian are bad news, especially those at the top. What does Serenity Ward's involvement mean for the uprising? WIll she be able to keep their secret from her high society friends and family?

Natalie's world building is immersive and so well done. You are pulled into the story and really get a feel for what the world is for both Serenity and Bram. I am really hoping for more growth and character development in book 2. But the evolution that Bram and Serenity go through in Book 1 is so well done. Bram softens and Serenity sees the world and herself more than just on the surface. The book is well paced and the events seem realistic. I cannot wait for book 2 and would recommend this for any fan of Divergent, Hunger Games, or any YA dystopian series!

A special thank you goes out to author Natalie Cammaratta for providing me a copy of this book for review!

Everything you want and expect in a Dystopian novel. Thrill, suspense, uprising, found family, and the allying of unlikely characters. Natalie is the queen of end of chapter cliff hangers that turn “just one more chapter” into 5 more chapters. I am eagerly awaiting book 2!
