The Widest Net: Unlock Untapped Markets and Discover New Customers Right in Front of You

Rate this book
Discover and create a dynamic new model for growing your business by connecting with customers outside your usual field of view

Do you think you know your ideal customer? Think again. Many businesses create an ideal consumer profile―aiming all their sales and marketing efforts towards this single type of person―and end up missing out on endless opportunities to sell their services or products.

Award-winning business coach, speaker and author Pamela Slim has helped thousands of entrepreneurs around the world start, sustain, and scale their businesses. In The Widest Net , she explains how to build strong diverse relationships, identify and connect with new partners, expand markets, generate leads, and find new customers in places you may never have considered.

Social media is a valuable business tool, but it can often create a comfortable cocoon for entrepreneurs, marketers, and leaders who all need to understand the entirety of the marketplace, not just their own social graph. With this book as a guide, you’ll learn how to connect with potential clients and customers using the true breadth of the marketplace, which she calls an ecosystem of living connections.

The Widest Net takes the big, swirling cloud of “how to build your business” and breaks it down into tangible, practical steps that you can actually follow. She shows how each are connected, which helps the whole process make sense and, as a reader, implement it in a much more effective and sustainable manner.

I LOVED the case studies and literally used the exercises at each end of a chapter as a workbook to build out my marketing plan and set more realistic priorities and expectations for myself.

One of my biggest takeaways (and reliefs) is the comfort in accepting my value as a “connector” that naturally and strategically taps into my eco-system so that everyone gets extraordinary results. There is so much value that comes from the eco-system around us and taking advantage of that is a mutually beneficially weight off everyone’s shoulders.

On top of it all, Pam writes in such a relatable and easy-to-read manner that I truly felt her passion for helping her clients and their businesses grow. I was lucky enough to read a digital copy as part of an early review, and really look forward to getting the print edition so I can highlight parts and come back to it as frequently as I need, as my plan and business develop.

This book is perfect for business owners and entrepreneurs, as well as business coaches and consultants who work with either of those groups of people.

My friend Pam Slim has written a beautiful book with everything you need to know about building a sustainable small business from idea to network to enduring success. What I particularly like about the book is that, while she uses her own story as part of how to grow a business, it isn't confined to that. This thoughtful book truly contains the blueprint for any small business to grow and prosper.

I've been a big fan for Pamela Slim for many years so was excited to read her latest book.

I read an early review copy, and look forward to getting a copy I can scribble in so that I can work through some of the exercises. I will also be recommending it to a couple of business-owner friends/colleagues who need a recharge.

There are many fabulous ideas/frameworks in there. What grabbed my attention the most was the idea that our individual businesses are more likely to be successful and contribute to community when they are part of an ecosystem. This aligns with the way I do business - that I can focus on abundance rather than competition and that business owners and different kinds of partners can align to advance the big ideas that we're working to bring into the world.

This book reinvigorated my approach to what I'm dreaming for my business. Hungry for more relational, anti-capitalist ways of engaging with others, there is so much in this book that is deeply practical while also being inspiring and rooted in ethics of social change and community care.

Pam Slim gave a talk at a conference I attended in 2023, and so I added this to my reading list - she is a great speaker who radiates inner confidence and flow. What I like about her, is her deep spiritual belief that she is guided to do her work, and that she is contributing to a better future. The book also has some great practical tips.

Great growth ideas for entrepreneurs and business owners

Love the process, ideas and examples in this book by Pam Slim. I have used one concept, 100 conversations with strangers, in my business. The idea of watering holes and tiny marketing actions are great to grow your business.

Excellent book for anyone in business, especially someone interested in building a sustainable business that is community based (as opposed to an empire). So many useful tips and a brilliant framework. Will be implementing in my own business.

The book you need for solid business development

Pamela takes a broad concept and breaks it down into manageable steps and a clear plan to implement. I am already doing TMAs and finding my ecosystem that I can support as much as it supports me. Highly recommend!
