Ellis Eden retired from a career of piracy on the high seas to settle down with the man he Tom Winleigh, youngest son of a wealthy merchant family. Ellis has tried hard to make a place for himself in respectable society, and he knows Tom loves him, and he’s happy.
But when a fever nearly claims Tom’s life, Ellis is faced with a foe he can’t fight ... and even though Tom’s recovering, the ordeal has left Ellis shaken to the core.
And in the aftermath, on a storm-tossed afternoon, Ellis and Tom will face the tempests of their own emotions, and find safe harbor in each other.
Beautiful short story, only 12 pages, but it's K.L.Noone, and I'll buy and love everything by them (as my friend Drusilla's said, even their shopping list).
"He watched the rain dance across the water and the sky and the antique glass of their bedroom window. He thought, perhaps, the storm might be smiling back."
Ellis is such a soft ex-pirate (I mean, privateer...) and his adoration for Tom just pops off the page. The overall story reads a little like a teaser to a much larger story (and I would love to read that), but it's a satisfyingly sweet read that still stands on its own. My only gripe is that it's not longer.
I love the language, the descriptions, the poetic imagination of the characters, and not just the poet but the "pirate" as well! The devotion, how they are with each other, the stories of their past and present... Lovely.
This tale provided the sweetest little peek into the life of a retired privateer and his always dreaming poet. They’re so goddamn cute, my heart nearly exploded.
