Divine, Divine, Divine is an exploration of the divine and the deviant. A consideration of the Black tongue as a home. Life and death through the lens of language. This collection is an ode to the experiences that make us whole and an acknowledgment of those things that fracture us.
Daniel Summerhill’s poetry collection “Divine, Divine, Devine” reimagines the power of language to celebrate the black experience, specifically the experiences of Oakland, California’s black community. “Language is proof that we’re alive. Proof that we’re divine,” writes Summerhill in the introduction. At the end of the book readers will find suggestions for classroom use. I hope many teachers discover this divine collection and share these poems w/ students.
Summerhill’s reflections and memories weave together to form a narrative of struggles and successes. Growing up in Oakland CA, and making his way in the world. It is a collection of poems worth sitting with, worth juggling, worth grasping and holding tight. An insight into what makes a poet the person he is.
“Language is proof that we're alive. Proof that we're divine," Daniel B.Summerhill writes in the introduction to Divine, Divine, Divine. The poetry collection engages and captures!
I picked up this book after registering for a workshop with the author at the Mendocino Coast Writers' Conference coming up this summer. I am now even more excited about the conference and workshop. This collection grabbed me from the first poem, and I loved the experience. The author has a strong talent for capturing worlds of ideas and emotions in short poems. I can't wait to learn from him, and I hope you'll check out this fantastic collection of poems. Five stars!
