Legally Separated and Unemployed with a Year to Kill – What Will Jeanne Do?

A unique and timely set of circumstances create the perfect storm for a woman on the cusp of multiple changes. Her somewhat flippant decision to volunteer sets the stage for profound relationships you won’t soon forget.

When the housing bubble burst in 2008, Jeanne Corvese Hussin found herself at a fork in the road. She could either continue her job as a senior vice president for a mortgage banker at a significant pay cut or take the year-long severance and travel with her son, Jason. She chose the latter.

Now what?

After Jason would go to bed, the nights stretched out before Jeanne like a long black highway cutting through the desert. She spent the hours online flirting with men but was often disappointed by their all too common misrepresentations on dating websites.

Suddenly, it dawned on her, or maybe it was God. She should find a way to give back. Drawn to senior citizens, Jeanne found herself at a local assisted living facility volunteering her time to Alzheimer’s and dementia patients in a ward ironically named Recollections.

From her inspired impulse to serve emerge the colorful characters who comprise I See Old People©. You will never be the same.

In these pages, Jeanne tells the story of her family, her interactions with the memory-challenged seniors at Recollections, and finally, her storybook “never too late” romance in a memoir out of the ordinary.

I See Old People is much more than a book; it’s an experience.

Writing my memoir was a 10-year process. While much of the book covers my visits with seniors who struggle from memory loss, it's really a love story filled with joy, hope, and inspiration. It's a celebration of extraordinary characters and the lives they lived. It's funny, warm, conversational and inspiring. My purpose is to inspire people to give back while realizing their dreams. I show it's possible when you show up!

Having grown up in a home with a mentally ill parent, which leaves effects similar to those of growing up with an alcoholic parent, I could identify well with Author Jeanne Hussin. Early on while reading I See Old People I felt compelled to want to keep reading the book to see how God brought good from Jeanne’s tragic childhood, which He did. Two biblical principles are reflected throughout I See Old People. The first principle, you reap what you sow (Galatians 6:7-9), is reflected throughout the book, from Jeanne’s parents’ unhealthy lifestyle habits (e.g.: smoking, drinking) leading to their early deaths to Jeanne’s sowing love to others and receiving love in return. The second Scripture verse that came to my mind as I read I See Old People is Proverbs 18:24 (KJV), “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly…”. This principle was especially reflected in the life of Jeanne’s second husband Joe by how kind he was with so many friends who were protective of him. I See Old People is an inspiring story of overcoming. I highly recommend this book to anyone coming from a dysfunctional childhood who desires to rise above his or her past.

“I See Old People” is a memoir filled with love, hope, laughter and a few tears. Author Jeanne Corvese Hussin shares her warm smile and optimistic viewpoint as she encourages readers to create a joyful life. Open and effervescent, Jeanne has written a story that will entertain you with its short and readable chapters and its positive message.

In 2008, Jeanne was at a crossroads. The Great Recession had begun and Jeanne reluctantly decided to take severance pay from her corporate job and try to find her next path in life. During this year, she reviewed her past- the happy moments and the discouraging times. Her close bond with her slightly eccentric family was a plus and her divorce was a negative. Would she find a new job and purpose, and perhaps a new relationship?

Jeanne begins her severance year by volunteering at a nursing home in the dementia wing. Her time spent with her aged friends taught her resilience, determination and how to look for pockets of joy. As she opened herself up to new positive opportunities, she began to hope for love.

Author Hussin writes in a clear and lively style and her tales of her family and her romance adventure will cheer you. The book includes some photographs from her life. She ends her memoir with theses words. “It’s possible to be kind. It’s possible to forgive. It’s possible to love again. You will enjoy this book!

I enjoyed this memoir. A sweet, feel good story about sharing love and unexpectedly finding love by an author with a great attitude and zest for life. This story will leave you rooting for Jeanne and her family, happy there are such people, and motivated to wake up everyday looking for ways to share your smiles, talents and kindness. Great summertime read!
