wow...
So, I got through Book 1, volumes 1 to 5 - with a lot of skipping.

The writing is terrible and the illustration work is mediocre.

This is crap. Not good crap; so bad it's fun to read crap either - just plain-old, humorless, boring, painfully awkward crap.
