Гений Достоевского поистине универсален — в своих "малых" произведениях, как и в великих романах, он выступает и тонким психологом, и внимательным наблюдателем, и талантливым сатириком. Его "Дядюшкин сон", "Господин Прохарчин" и "Честный вор", в которых не однажды усматривали перекличку с Гоголем, исполнены горькой иронии, а вывернутая наизнанку жизнь глубинной провинции и петербургского "дна" заставляет читателя одновременно смеяться над недостатками героев и сопереживать им.
Именно в ранних рассказах и повестях Достоевский начал разрабатывать важнейшие философско-нравственные темы, которые позже будут развиты в "Преступлении и наказании", "Бесах" и "Братьях Карамазовых".
