A fun and somewhat silly book that introduces all the upper and lower case letters.

Genre: I placed this title in my reading log under Children’s Alphabet Picture Books.

Summary: A fantastic and wonderful way to learn the alphabet. With kitties and rhymes, it’s the way it should be taught, most of the time.

Critique:

(a.) The illustrations in this title bring letters to life with help from some furry felines. The mixture of water colors brightens every page.

(b.) Starting with page 3, we have Capers the cat, sitting at the dinner table with his owner. The bluish / purple painted background brings the rest of the scene into focus. The author puts a rhyme on the page as well, referring to Capers, “Can you look at your book and see what he took?” As you look at the picture of Capers and his bright white eyes, staring at the sky with blamelessness, you can see that he is sitting on top of the steak he has taken off the table.

(c.) Another great example of the illustrations can be found on page 6. Here we have Francis, a beautiful, white, fluffy cat that is reaching into a fish bowl. The wall behind him is golden brown with streaks of green, red and light brown throughout. The fish bowl is a clear – bright blue with a pretty, large mouthed, orange colored fish watching the paw of the cat, ever so closely. Also inside the fish bowl, there are a multiple colors of marbles, giving off a fresh accent inside the bowl along with the house and plan.

Curriculum Connection: A wonderful book with rhymes, outstanding artwork that I think would keep the attention of young readers. I would most definitely enjoy reading this title out loud with class and take time for students to interject between letters / pages.

My husband and I enjoyed this book more than my 2 year old. Each letter is accompanied by a paragraph, which makes it more sutible for older children. If you own or understand cats, you will enjoy this book.
