There’s a fine line between love and hate… and they’re about to cross it.
Becca Hartson should be used to moody men by now. She grew up with four overprotective older brothers, after all. But nothing could prepare her for the hostility she encounters from her new boss – the annoyingly gorgeous Daniel Carter.
Sure, his first impression of her was bad. She was in the arms of his brother, crying into his shirt. But the whole situation was purely platonic and Daniel knows that.
It doesn’t stop him from scowling at her every time they work together. Or from sending her heart into a crazy spin.
But if she wants to keep this job, she’ll have to grin and bear it.
Coming back to work at his family’s distillery after six years away was a mistake. Daniel knows it from the moment his gaze clashes with Becca’s. With her tumbling waves and soft smile, he knows she’s trouble from the start.
Daniel doesn’t believe in love. And he definitely doesn’t believe in falling for his employees.
But when Becca looks at him with those sweet doe eyes, he keeps forgetting to hate her…
Carrie Elks is an international bestselling author of traditionally-published and self-published novels. Her books are sweet yet sexy contemporary small town romance stories. You can find her in all these places:
Even with its modern buildings and political life, Charleston was a slower way of life. Bloodlines were important, manners were everything. And backstabbing was practically an artform.
She’d always found tuxedos a little comical before. Grown men wearing little bow ties that made them look like the mouse from Tom and Jerry, tied up and presented like a Christmas gift.
Oh come on. I haven’t heard so much squealing since Logan and Courtney bred their prize boar.
The gossip had disappeared about a week after they went public. It was amazing how boring a good relationship was to people.
My Review:
This was an enjoyable and satisfying installment and an excellent finale for the series although I fervently wish the family had more members, as I had grown attached to them. The characters were endearing and lovable and the storylines were relatable and easy to follow regardless of whether you had read the previous installments, although you should if you haven’t. The romance was tender and deliciously steamy with a minimum of conflict, my favorite type! Generous helpings of humor and family drama with vile relatives provided balance and flavor. In addition to being well entertained, I learned quite a bit about distilling whiskey as well as the complications and management of diabetes.
Grumpy Daniel and sweet Becca play off each other in this delightful story of love and hate. She doesn’t take any of his high-handed garbage, and he fights the delight her stubbornness brings him. Like a good whiskey, it takes time, patience, and the right mixture to make the perfect blend and these two have that chemistry down pat! The whole football/pig thing with her brothers made me LOL and remind me why I love this family so much. A satisfying, wonderful read. A great addition to the series.
I was drawn to the grumpy/sunshine set up with my favourite workplace affair trope but it didn’t really deliver on that. He was grumpy to her approximately three times before becoming besotted and loved up and nearly all of the action took place away from the workplace so I was left a bit wanting. That didn’t really feature in this at all.
It’s part of a series but I haven’t read the others and this stood alone. Available on ku. Not a great read for me I’m afraid.
The Hartsons' of Hartson’s Creek family were already among my favorites. Yet again, I read about this family feeling utterly besotted. But Becca's story just became my most favorite. I think it's mostly about seeing the entirety of the siblings interact the way they do, with the lone female child at the center.
When We Touch is a wonderful enemies to lovers romance. When Becca's boss Nathan Carter moves to Japan to work, he's replaced by his brother Daniel, who does absolutely nothing to endear himself to Becca, one of the distilleries' key employees. In fact, he makes her hate him. It's not in Becca to be negative and a myriad of feelings, the push and pull between them, escalates to something else quickly.
The chemistry between them is so amazing. Even innocent conversations about baking sound flirty (& dirty), and its so clear they are seducing each other while building a friendship. I really enjoyed the transformation and seeing them fall in love. But with any great romance, comes strife. As Carrie Elks does, she made me feel this one through and through.
I highly recommend this entire series and it might be tempting to read this one first, you really need to know the brothers first and enjoy to the fullest the family dynamics. 5 + Stars!!
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntarily, honest review of it.
The Heartbreak brothers is a great series and I have enjoyed reading each book in it. In the first four books we could see how the four Hartson brothers fell in love and now it’s time for Becca, the youngest of the Hartson siblings, to find her HEA in this book. I was very excited about that!
Becca loves her work in the whiskey distillery, she has a great boss, wonderful colleagues and she’s doing a job that she loves. But then her boss Nathan gets the chance to go to Japan, meaning that Becca will get a new boss to work for, namely Daniel Carter. Nathan’s older brother who has been working in Scotland for the last few years. Their first meeting doesn’t go well and although there is something brewing between them, Daniel is doing everything he can to stop it. Growing up with four older brothers has teach Becca a lot of men but Daniel is a special blend of guy. But no matter how much he scowls at her, she finds him very interesting and he makes her heart beat like never before. Daniel tries to keep his distance but Becca’s smiles and sweet character lure him closer every day. Until the day that he can’t resist her anymore. But Daniel is keeping secrets from Becca, secrets that will show her another side of him, a not so nice side. Will she stay with him if she discovers the secrets of his past or not?
I must confess that it took me some time to get into the story, not because it wasn’t good. No! This story just had a different vibe to it than the previous stories in this series. It took me some time to figure it out but suddenly I understood the reason for it. Where the four previous stories had a Hartson brother as the male main character, in this story ‘When we touch’ the male main character was Daniel Carter. And Daniel Carter was a totally different kind of man than the Hartson brothers! He’s grumpier, more intense and distance, a bit colder and very mysterious. He was a difficult character to get to know better because his upbringing had learned him to hide his emotions and never be vulnerable. But that just made him more interesting to Becca (and me).
Becca was a lovely main female character, she’s very friendly, generous but she also knew how to stand up to Daniel with banter and teasing and I really liked that about her. The interaction between her and Daniel was sweet sometimes and more intense at other times. I enjoyed both. We again got both POV’s.
Of course, Becca’s older, overprotective brothers had to be in the story too. Testing Daniel’s character and intentions and seeing if he’s good enough for their little sister. I really enjoyed the teasing and interaction between the Hartson brothers and how they reacted to Daniel but mostly, how they loved Becca very much. And Becca may be the youngest and a girl but Becca certainly know how to handle her big brothers.
‘When we touch’ is the last book in this series. I’m a bit sad about that because I have enjoyed this series very much but I also think that the writer gave this series a wonderful ‘end’ with this last book. Because I finished this story and this series with a very good feeling and a smile on my face.
5 Amazing Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is definitely my favorite in the series... Oh My Word the Hartson Family are amazing people that will make you an emotional mess I love them all. Daniel and Becca finally find their HEA and this books feels like an extended epilogues of the Heartbreak Brothers.. Can we have the stories of the next Generation Hartson please Carrie Elks🥰 #WhiskeyLove #DanielCarter #SugarLoverNot #Becca'sBrothers #LoveTheGroupChat #Distillery #SingleMalt #FamilyDrama #AssHalfBrother #GalaNight #LoveHartson #WhenWeTouch #GrumpyDaniel #BakerBecca
The Heartbreak Brothers book five The Final. Becca Hartson the little sister to Gray, Cam, Logan and Tanner and they are fully protective of her from all men as brothers do. Her job at the local whiskey distillery, G. Scott Carter she loves the job and after five years she is now one of the seniors. and her hobby and passion is cake baking. Daniel Carter is stepping in from his brother and is going to be her new boss, and he is the most annoying aggravating rude man she has ever met. When we touch is one heartbreaker, I adored this series it captures so many emotions to readers, and left me with such a warmth and shivery feeling as I read. These two characters are on a big roller coaster ride all the way through and this book gave me so much enjoyment I'm going to miss these guys and Becca in Hartsons Creek but I'm sure this wonderful author will have another series that will be just as wholesome so I will look forward to reading more. fantastic five star's.
Excellent addition to this series. Daniel was back from Scotland to take over the family distillery and ran into Becca in his brother's arms. She was upset Nathan was leaving an he thought they had something going on. He was attracted to her, but kept growling at her to disguise it. She was a baker and brought things into the office quite a bit. I loved the dynamics of Becca's family and Daniel's family needs to grow up. Some of them were close and some just liked to cause trouble. A wonderful story that I stayed up way too late to finish I got this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review
1. Can’t stand books where the H has so much fucking baggage. Like the list is long. And the h just has to be understanding about it. It’s exhausting 2. His baggage consists of his ex gf leaving him for his half brother. He had a baby with that ex that they lost. He moved to Scotland to run away from the drama. He has diabetes. He’s an asshole (not in an interesting way)… and then when all this shit comes up he yells at the h and she runs away.. and then you get her pov where she says something along the lines of “I should have been more understanding” 3. Idk how authors can write such weak heroines. You can allow them to dislike certain shit from the Hero’s life. Not everyone has to accept everything. It’s unrealistic for someone to just be 100% understanding and get over pretty deep baggage that he has. 4. All the baggage the H had really pulls you away from the smut/romance. Every time they found a good rhythm something else with his ex pops up. Fucking yawn. If you like that kind of angst then go for it. I dislike when books plot revolves around an ex. Lowest form of romance plot in my opinion. 5. Dnf 70% and it’s a short book. If that tells you anything

This is the final book in the Heartbreak Brothers series and I'm gutted. I'm going to miss the Hartson family and all their shenanigans. This final book is about Becca their younger sister and Carrie has certainly reached that high bar she sets herself with each book. The story of Becca and Daniel is sweet and cute with some steamy moments intertwined and exactly what you want for a romance. Daniel certainly gives Cam a run for his money (my favourite Hartson brother), with his moody, alpha ways and broken pieces. I've always loved Becca's character and she really comes into her own in this book. A fantastic send off but definitely think we should hear from the second generation one day!!
It started out funny and a good enemies to lovers book, however; the miss communications, an urgent hospital visit for one of the mc and offcourse everything after that was fixed really easily made it going down hill. Decided to give it 2,5*
They series continues to get better and better. I was hooked from the first book and each has left me wanting even more. The author writes an incredible story that brings light to an important issue, while giving the love/hate relationship between two characters perfect for each other. Daniel and Becca may be my favorite, but I know you will fall in love with all of them. You want to read these books so make sure they are on your list.
Becca and Daniel. Becca is the last of the Hartson clan. The baby and only girl. The whole life edge has been protected. But when the new boss comes to town and they butt heads, edge does not no to the brothers. Edge faces this one head first and gets tangled. Book is ok but not a lot of brotherly intrusion, which you expect after the first four in series. Did not evoke any intense feelings for me.
This was a good read. Daniel is back home working at the distillery. He and Becca are attracted to each other. However, due to his past he believes he isn't good enough. Luckily by the end he comes to his senses and they get their happy ending.
Becca finally gets her time to shine! I loved getting to know her better. She's kind and caring, almost to the point of making herself and afterthought. Compassionate and super witty! I love that she's sort of a mother hen and doesn't take crap. She's honest and open.
Daniel is dark to Becca's light. He has high, closed off walls, and doesn't let anyone in. She is everything he never knew he needed or wanted. Watching them find their way to one another was so good!
Sexy, witty, and emotional...it had a bit of a Jane Eyre/Mr. Rochester feel to it! And, one of the best things about this series is the strong family aspect. But, not everyone's family works the same and we see a lot of that in this book.
I wanted to like this book but I honestly felt so annoyed with becca’s brothers they literally treated her like her only purpose was to do anything they needed. Also the guy ( I can’t remember his name) was so annoying acting like there was no way they could be something bc of what happened with his mom like dude bo one cares. I’d give this book like a 2.5
I loved everything about the Hartson’s I’m so sad to see the series complete But what a way to end. Becca has been the great side character throughout and we’ve finally had her story told. She’s strong and feisty and knows her own mind and I love how she challenges Daniel. Daniel come across as arrogant and aloof but once his story gets told you see his whole self and his vulnerability with it.
I loved so many aspects of this story. The ying/yang of their families. The struggles. The closeness and the distance.
I wish there was a chance to give it an infinity score, platforms should have that option. This book was nothing but such a soft and beautiful read that saying goodbye to the Hartson's felt like I was finally taking a flight and going away from them, never to return back again. This family is so special to me and have already made a soft space in my heart that sometimes I'm worried they might snug in so deep that I wouldn't notice. Becca and Daniel's book is something to die for. A beautiful mix of everything you could ever wish for your heart. The storyline, the plot, the character development, the portrayal, the feelings and the colours of heart displayed were nothing but brutally beautiful. I fell in love with Daniel the moment he walked through the party and we got to know him. The way he holds himself worrying that he might break Becca's heart, not caring that his was burning high up in flames was portrayed so magnificently beautifully that it touched my heart at all the right places. And to see Becca, the sunshine to his darkness, the woman who loves baking and has a sweet tooth, to see her meet the grump and totally change both of their fortunes was nothing short of a magnificently beautiful picture. I wish I could pinpoint ONE thing that I loved the most but Carrie wrote this entire book so beautifully, it was hard to pick one. A relationship like of Becca and Daniel's is less nowadays and to see their characters developing, especially Daniel's, to see him actually work hard for the woman he loves was commendable. It is not easy to forget the past, especially when it started haunting you even before you were born. It is not easy to work your sh*t through and finally face it knowing all hell could break lose, knowing that every good thing could be snatched with you within barely even a second, but to still see him gulp down his fears and work through his energy to be better for the woman he wanted to form a family with? Nothing more beautiful than this.
A truly magical book which is highly recommended to read. Especially the extra bonus scene. Saying goodbye to your family hits hard but at some points, that's what you gotta do. Every person has to say goodbye some time, and for the Hartsons, here it was. Gonna genuinely miss this series so much from the deepest pits of my heart.

She was the sunshine to his darkness, the smile to his frown. She warmed him in a way nobody ever had before.
Technically, Becca isn't a Heartbreak Brother, but all four of her brothers are, and they are very protective of their baby sister. It is why she hasn't dated much and is eager to break out on her own. She works at the GSC distillery as a lead distiller, having risen in the ranks due to her skill and talent. She gets along well with her boss, Nathan, and is sad to see him leave for the Tokyo distillery.
During his going away party, his elusive brother Daniel arrives to take over the distillery after having spent years at their Scotland location. Reading the situation wrong, he makes a judgmental assumption. Let's just say he and Becca don't get off on the right foot. This frustrates Becca, as she likes to please people and get them to like her. Also, he seems to be friendly, or at least courteous, to everyone but her. And damn him for being so handsome; it makes it much more difficult to dislike him.
Daniel lives with diabetes, and a worrying mother as a result. So when he accidentally leaves his emergency kit in his office while he's on a business trip to Charleston, he calls the one person he can think of: Becca. Eager to show her new boss she is capable of handling different tasks and rearranging her schedule, she makes the drive. She ends up accompanying him to dinner with his older half-siblings, where they pretend to be in a relationship. Lines get blurred and they both realize their attraction.
During their interactions with Daniel's half-siblings, Becca is exposed to the unhealthy rivalry between Daniel and Lawrence. She also gets first-hand experience of Daniel's potential for intense passion. Things heat up quickly between them, and boy, do they have some amazing chemistry! Perhaps there's something to say for letting tension build up – the release is all the more satisfying.
Despite not trusting himself with relationships, Daniel can't stay away from Becca, and they easily fall into a rhythm while laying low at work. He even goes to meet her family, which results in some Hartson shenanigans at Daniel's expense. He's a good sport about it, though, showing he cares enough about her to want to be accepted by her brothers.
Daniel is keeping some secrets from Becca, though, which blow up in his face at the most inopportune moment. I don't blame Becca for her reaction, as he had plenty of opportunities to tell her. His reasons for not telling her do make sense, in a kind of warped way. Let's just say Daniel has some issues to overcome and to realize he is not the same man he once was.
I loved everything about this enemies-to-lovers boss-employee romance. The frustration mixed with desire, the protective brothers, the opposite personalities complementing each other... Not to mention the absolutely steamy love scenes! A wonderful conclusion to this small town series.
This is not exactly a 100% strangers-to-lovers story, but definitely a hate-to-love romance! Where the boss you met in a rocky situation changes from not being able to be in a room with you, to him looking for you with a bouquet of roses to tell you that nobody is allowed to give you flowers but him. And, if you're into family drama, this book shows the good and bad of having protective and competitive siblings.
Daniel, against his better judgment, returns to his family's distillery, trying to forget why he left in the first place and doing what he does best: focusing on his work. A tragedy in his past made him a workaholic and a strict boss, making him build walls all over so he doesn't get hurt again. Becca, on the other hand, being the workplace's sweetheart and a senior distiller, finds as her only problem not being able to date thanks to his overprotective brothers.
So, when they meet in a situation that might seem compromising, Daniel's rude reaction triggers an animosity relationship between them. However, he did not count that Becca's capacity would make him doubt his current feelings towards her, as well as his firm decision of not dating, especially not his subordinate.
The book talks about two people who come from different upbringings, where one was filled with love and laughter, while the other one always had to fight to get a bit of recognition from their own blood. While one is looking for real love, the other one tries to avoid it at all costs. It also touches on rocky subjects to which one can relate, such as strained parent-son relationship, sibling rivalry, overbearing brothers, and the importance of communication in a relationship.
Becca and Daniel's story is so real, it shows how one spark starts a fire of love/hate, how one hand can heal another when letting our walls down, and that a relationship is about having patience, trusting that everything is going to work out, and always communicating with each other.
After reading the first four books in the Heartbreak Brothers series, I couldn’t wait to read ‘When We Touch’. This is another standalone, and the story of the only sister of the ‘Heartbreak Brothers’. And I was so curious about Becca Hartson’s story. So I started reading as soon as possible.
In ‘When We Touch’ we read the story of Becca, the only girl and the youngest of the Hartson kids. Becca works at a Whiskey distillery and she loves her job. But when her well liked boss decides to move away, and give back the reins to his older brother Daniel Carter, Becca is afraid things will change. And they do. Although everyone always adores Becca, Daniel seems to hate her from the moment he laid eyes on her. And soon the feelings mutual. Daniel is a frustrating and infuriating guy. Or isn’t he?
Well.. I love this series and I’m sad to leave the Hartson siblings goodbye after this book, but boy was this the perfect ending to a great series! I knew I was going to like Becca’s character, since I already did the few moments I read about her in the previous books. But I didn’t expect to love her this much. Becca is definitely a great character. She is caring, hardworking and definitely knows how to stand up for herself. And although her brothers make her crazy at times, she does everything for them.
And then there is Daniel’s character. I really did love his character too. Sure, he can be an arrogant ass, and he is really unfair to Becca at times. But there was just something about him that I adored. And I loved reading about the moments between Becca and Daniel. Their chemistry was flying of the pages and they where just perfect together. And I couldn’t stop reading this book till the very last page.
Although I have loved and adored the other books in this series. ‘When We Touch’ definitely is my favorite of the series. I just loved everything about this book and I would really recommend it if you’re a romance reader. I can’t wait to read more books by Carrie Elks.
💕Good romantic pairing: sorry to see this series end😣
4.5🌟 stars🏞🏘🏡 The plot of this story was great, especially the sparks that fly when romantic leads Becca and Daniel first meet and get to know each other, and the introduction of a character with a common but dangerous illness that is rarely mentioned. In fact I have NEVER come across a main character with diabetes until this story and I read hundreds of books each year! Kudos to Carrie Elks for giving the illness and its effect on the whole family a voice👍.
Daniel is a perfectionist who has a secret in his past that drove him out of West Virginia to Scotland until family circumstances forced his return. Yes, this series is set in West Virginia, another rarity in the fiction I've read. I can't believe that I never picked up on the location when I read the four previous romances in the series. The WV location is a plus for me because I like moving around the country from my armchair.
Then there's Becca's large, lively family headed by her four older, extremely protective brothers. All the brother banter, sisterhood support from Mia and family hijinks gave a warm tone that nicely contrasted with the icy relationship Daniel endures with his older half-brother Lawrence.
The romance was touching and believable, complicated by Daniel's issues and attitude. He gets quite stroppy and cutting at times. There's a cute scene with a wardrobe mishap that really gets Daniel's heart racing. My only issue was the extended intimate scenes between Daniel and Becca. It's a matter of personal preference, I know, but I did not need all of the clinches and kisses so thoroughly descibed. For me, less would have been better. If you like plenty of heat in love scenes, come and get it!
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
The crescendo to the Heartbreak Hartson series when their sister finds the man of her dreams in her grumpy new boss.
Becca Hartson has been overprotected by her four Heartbreak Brothers. Only one boyfriend was brave enough to take a chance, and in the end he proved unworthy. Now that her brothers have all softened and matured since finding their own partners, Becca has an opportunity to throw herself into her work. Her job is a dream until her favorite boss leaves for new opportunities, and is replaced with his handsome, grumpy brother who has been living in Scotland for several years.
Daniel comes from a family that was beyond unhealthy. His family's whiskey distillery is his pride and joy. When he returns home to take over as head of the business, he can't help but be blindsided by the most beautiful, and kind woman he has ever met.
Their beginning was uphill at times. Daniel tried his best to give them some distance, fighting his own attraction to Becca for her benefit. But feelings come quickly to the surface when a fake relationship is demonstrated in front of his toxic family. Old traumas, ghosts of the past, feelings of unworthiness, and secrets threaten the two lovers before they even have a chance to name what is their relationship status.
Hooray for a Diabetic protagonist! My husband is a type 1 diabetic like Daniel. I can say that this author either knows someone with this disease or has done an excellent job researching what real life is like for a diabetic. The grumpy/sunshine trope is well played especially for someone living with blood glucose issues. This story had a layer of depth and kept its upbeat hope in a love story. Best part was the bonus Epilogue with all the Hartsons.
When We Touch: KU 322 pgs **** 9/4/23 Becca & Daniel
4 stars. I loved Becca and Daniel’s story. It took them awhile but they were able to get it together before the 50% mark, which I loved. Daniel was the son of the man that owned the Distillery and he had been in Ireland for 10 years running that distillery. He came back to Hartford’s Creek when his brother, Nathan, wanted to leave to run the distillery in Tokyo. Daniel was a perfectionist and a grump. Becca had worked there for years and had moved up the ladder over time to become one of the main distillers in that branch. There were instant sparks when they met but Daniel was a grump and they didn’t hit it off for a bit, arguing and butting heads. Daniel’s step siblings lived a few hours away and he and his stepbrother Lawrence actually hated each other (mostly because their father pitted them against each other their entire lives) It was interesting to see both sides of that family together and how Becca was Becca and made everything so much better for Daniel during those awful meetings. Her brothers were awesome when they met Daniel, putting him through “their” little tests to see if he was good enough for Becca. This of course drove her nuts! I absolutely love how Ms. Elks keeps up in touch with all of the characters we became so attached to in the other books in this series. All’s well that ends well but I am sure going to miss my Heartbreak boys and girl.
Downloaded extra on all the siblings in the future.
What a thoroughly enjoyable story When we Touch is. I really loved it and read it with effortless ease. Becca and Daniel's relationship didn't get off to a good start,as his first impression was that she was shacking up with his brother who was about to leave to work in Japan. So his first thoughts towards her was anger...but attraction also..He was taking over from his brother at the distillery they owned and was now Becca's new boss...which could only mean trouble. Becca couldn't understand why her new Boss was so horrible towards her but it seemed that she couldn't stop her attraction to him even though he seemed to hate her. Until feelings begin to change when Daniel needs Becca's help with an issue and she comes to his rescue. This is a fantastic story, funny ,sweet, sexy and romantic and deals with an issue I have never read in a book before...Although it is a common health issue these days,I feel like I have learned alot about what its like to have this condition. I loved reading how Becca changed Daniel he turned from being grumpy to feeling happier the more he spent time with her...Even taking on her over protective brothers. Carrie Elk's has written a perfectly romantic story and it is one of those books that you cannot put down...it was a pleasure to read and captivated me throughout. I Loved Becca and Daniel I highly recommend it. 5 Star.
