Back in the devil’s lair, I’m at the mercy of a man who fascinates and terrifies me, a tender killer whose obsession with me is growing by the day. Nikolai Molotov is as much my captor as he is my protector, his compound both my safe haven and my gilded cage.

If only I could resist his lethally seductive touch... or fight his growing hold on my heart and mind. Because no matter how far I delve into the enigma of his past, I still don’t know the answer to the most crucial question:

Just how dangerous is his love for me?

Note: This is the conclusion of Nikolai and Chloe’s story.

After feeling fairly lackluster about book one, I was hopeful book two would successfully manage to vertically buoy the entire duet for me...

description

Sadly, that just wasn't the case. And I feel pretty crappy about it.

description

Anna Zaires is one of my all-time favorite authors and I am so grateful to be a part of her ARC team. As I stated in my review for book one, I had never given a Zaires book less than four stars up until that point. So this was an even bigger bummer for me. I really wanted to love it.

That said, it's also simply reality that we can't like everything all the time. And that's okay.

description

Now, I know what you might be thinking...where is your rip-roaring review with all the things you didn't like about the book then, you massive kiss ass?

Well...

description

Just kidding.

Answer: I genuinely don't have one.

Zaires is a great writer and and, in my opinion, there is nothing to rip apart. I think my lackluster feelings for this series boils down to one simple thing: I just wasn't able to buy-in to the main couple and their chemistry. And, being that's kind of the linchpin of a romance book...

description

I also just had zero interest in Chloe or her backstory/situation. But whatever.

Thankfully, this book did offer something SUPER exciting...the introduction of a new couple I am VERY interested in...

description

I can't WAIT for Zaires to come out with their book. In my opinion, they had more chemistry in two pages than Nikolai and Chloe had in this entire duet. And I can't WAIT. Here's hoping they get a full trilogy.

UGH, why does it have to be ooooover? Needless to say, this was JUST as good as book two, and while I'm insanely sad that there won't be a third book, it looks like there might be a book on one of the side characters in this one that I'm just DYING to read. Seriously, this was the best series--only problem is that I went from being in a book slump to having a massive book hangover. 😂 Damnit.

Oh my gosh! What a whirlwind! I finished Angel’s Cage faster than I did Devil’s Lair, and it’s because I COULDN’T put it down. Work didn’t get done, family brushed off, personal hygiene neglected... oh my!

Let’s just say that it’s everything!

Anything-for-you romance? ✔️
Cheek-burning hot sex? ✔️
Adorable father-son bonding? ✔️
Fall-out-of-your-seat action? ✔️
Smart no-nonsense heroine? ✔️
The sexiest all-controlling Russian dark alpha? ✔️

It’s an explosive ending 🧨💥💣🤯 to Nikolai and Chloe’s story. I love, love, loved every minute of it. Anna Zaires gives depth to her hot captive romances by getting the reader inside the heads of her main characters, giving their depraved thoughts meaning and purpose. She doesn’t only tell a story. She transports you into that world so you can think “huh? so that’s why he/she thinks that ... I wondered”. Captive and dark romance taps into our secret wish to live a life without a guilty conscience and Anna’s books are a deep dive into the psychology of the characters who inhabit that world. That’s why I love re-reading them. Knowing the outcome is not the only end-game. There’s the enjoyment of her chosen words as well!

Bravo, Anna! Thank you for introducing us to the Molotov family. I can’t wait to know them all!

After Chloe come back to Nikolai's house, she struggle with her feelings for him: after seeing what he is capable of, she shouldn't be attracted to him; she shouldn't want to be his...
Yet the bond between the two of them is undeniable. It's an obsession, a madness...

The moment Chloe surrender to her feelings, they live the best life. It's like a dream for both. But there are still secrets able to destroy everything and enemies ready to attack...

So, i liked the first book and i was really curious about the ending of Nikolai and Chloe' story, but honestly it was a bit slow for most of the book.
There wasn't the sparkle i felt in the first book.

As ruthless as Nikolai may be, i just saw his obsessive yet caring self.
I missed the dark part of the story.
And the secrets we were waiting for them to be uncovered weren't as shocking as i would have expect in a second book of a dark duet.
But i really liked the spike of adrenaline at the end, because it also open the door for Alina' story. That's why i give it four stars.

In the end i liked this duet but maybe it would have been better as a stand alone.

Anna Zaires can definitely do much better....

I still recommented it to those who like alpha obsessive man who would do anything to protect the one they love, and to those who don't like stories too dark.

3 stars!

Wait. What just happened? That's it? Noooo. Freaking. Way.

Alright, here's what I think about this book. It was way better than the first one, but still a huge disappointment. Whereas I felt like the last part of the book was a bit rushed. AZ decided to end Nikolai and Chloe's story by not giving much details about Chloe's past issues.

The thing is I love a dark romance book if it's just not about smut, I also burn for the action. You know, the standoff, fights, guns, enemies and other sort of things. This book contains some of it but not until the last 80 percent of it, so it sucks for me because I want more of the action stuff.

About the MCs. *sighs*
Dude I'm not happy. I'm really not. Chloe and Nikolai's chemistry is just.. you know... boring. To be honest, I skip the smut part because I wasn't really interested with them. As I've said in my previous review the only character I loved was Slava.

But. But. Buuuut.. boy I do love that the last part of the book hints a whole new story for one of the side characters. I can't wait. I'm so excited!!!

Nikolai obsession for Chloe is growing by the day, she both terrified and in awe of him. That is until Alana on one drunken haze tells Chloe that he has had her car keys all the time & he a stone cold killer. After learning this Chloe runs from the fortress she was safe at. Now expose to the killers chasing her Nikolai is on the run to find Chloe before the people hunting Chloe does.

As Nikolai was nursing Chloe back to health as his obsession was growing stronger. Nikolai and his sister Alana was concern Nikolai was just like their father. Nikolai was Chloe captor just as much as her protector. Their was so many twist, turns, danger involving the Molotov family. Nikolai was always in fear of their enemies finding them and the threat to Chloe. Alana, Nikolai sister was also in danger. So just imagine trying to be the protector for sister Alana, Chloe his wife and also his son and at the end he had to choose. Can't wait to see the rest of family stories unfold Nikolai & Chloe was electric together...

Milquetoast heroine

might be a bit spoilery, so proceed at your own risk

Maybe it’s just me, but the older I get the less I seem able to abide young, immature, helpless, hapless heroines that are slightly dim into the bargain. Anna Zaires used to write strong, courageous, capable, even self-sufficient heroines and sadly, Chloe is none of that. Also, it’s not just about age, numerically Nora was a lot younger, a bare 18 to Chloes 24 or so, but in her inner monologue Chloe appears so much more immature. For the first part of the book, Chloe keeps on harping about how Nikolai ruthlessly killed her two assailants: never mind that they were in the process of brutally raping her before dispatching her. So. he not only saved her, rescuing her from her own thoughtless flight in the process, but then he pampers her and is unfailingly gentle it with her, while she recovers from her injuries. Then Chloe also laments that she is now stuck at the compound and Nikolai even tells her that he won’t let her go; but really, why would she even want to leave and where would she go with no connections, no resources, and dear daddy’s hired killers on her a**?! She would have no chance against those goons, as a matter of fact, she only evaded them so far because of sheer dumb luck and because Nikolai hired her and then monitored her. Also, when Nikolai comes up with a plan to eliminate the problem with her father (the guy who raped and impregnated her mom and then had her killed), she objects on ethical grounds… sorry what?! You have a problem with getting rid of someone who is responsible for the murder of your mom and is actively trying to kill you?! And Nikolai panders to her reservations, because he is so besotted with her.
Nikolai is great, and of course there is a good explanation why he killed his father (the patricide being another one of Chloe’s hang-ups). Nikolai’s only fault is falling for a bland milquetoast like Chloe, who, to be fair to her has one redeeming quality: she is good with children. But aside from that, she has no special interests and she is rather dim: having the same amount of information as the reader (as the story is told by dual first person point of view from her and Nikolai’s perspective), it takes her ages to figure out who is after her and why…
This is so different from Anna Zaires previous dark romance heroines: Nora was passionate about her art and when Julian got taken, she actively decided to go after him, damn the consequences (Twist Me trilogy). Or Yulia, who was an efficient operative who was only kept in check by her love for her brother, then turned her life around and became a master chef and restaurant owner (Capture Me trilogy), or Sara, who was not only an accomplished doctor, invested in her work, but also a talented songwriter and became successful as a singer (Tormentor Mine tetralogy).
If you have a strong, possessive, dominating hero, you also need a strong heroine, because otherwise what’s the point? Additionally I didn't get what Nikolai saw in Chloe as a person; they have chemistry and Chloe helped him to emotionally connect with his son, but aside from that they have no common ground at all and somehow that doesn't seem like a solid enough basis for spending a life time together, especially after they have known each other for all of a month.
I hated the dynamic between Chloe and Nikolai whereby Chloe with her passiveness forced Nikolai to take on all the responsibility for everything, including their relationship. Because of the lack of substantive external conflict this felt more like an angsty YA novel than a dark romance, and that’s definitively not my (book) kink. On top of all that, the ending felt kind of rushed.

The only bright spot was Nikolai’s sister Alina sacrificing herself to Alexei Leonov, the Molotov’s arch-rival, in order to prevent a blood bath. There seems to be at least the promise of a real dark romance story, especially as Alina has been dropping hints that made me think that she and Alexei have some kind of a past (aside from her being promised to him by her father to forge a tie between the two families) and also that she is not indifferent to him…

Audiobook: Narrators - Ava Erickson & Teddy Hamilton

Another superb performance! Both Ms. Erickson and Mr. Hamilton showed so much depth of emotion as they portrayed this hero and heroine. The angst, fear, desire was prevalent in their voices pulling me into the story on a level that I crave when listening to a book.

I loved the conclusion of Nikolai and Chloe’s story. Nikolai is the type of hero I’ve come to expect from this author without crossing any lines that might be blurred due to his anti-hero status. His gentle care and concern over Chloe totally stole my heart. The fact that he was still very much the same man inside, one that wanted to consume her, made me grin. That’s what I’m talking about in a hero!

May be a black-and-white image of 2 people, child, indoor and text

Chloe struggled with her feelings for Nikolai. Afterall, she’s very much aware that he can force her at any point to do as he wishes, although he never does. The fact that he bowed to her wishes when they were bargaining during an important moment was proof that he was at heart a really good guy.

This was laced with drama, danger, and excitement from a few different points. I loved each time Nikolai’s son was in the scene. He was so sweet and charming, always causing me to smile and these narrators performed him perfectly each time. With all the angst this story carried, it also burst with the chemistry between this hero and heroine.

Pace of the story : Moderate

Angst Rating : 5/10

Plot Summary :
Chloe is back with Nikolai. After her near experience with death, she is now being saved by him and his captive all at once. His ruthless tendencies frighten her whereas seeing him with his son and seeing him care for her makes her fall for him even more. But there is no way she could ever love him right? Well, he sure was determined to prove her wrong.

Even though their first enemies were now dead, there was a greater danger above them now. With Chloe's past being disclosed, it put her and others in great danger to be around her. That did not mean Nikolai was going to let her go. Even if she wanted it.

Overall Opinion :
I am so sad to see these characters go! Especially Slava. That little bundle of joy was certainly the best part of this duet and loved him so very much. The first book of this duet was more towards the contemporary romance for me and was less dark but in this one we saw more of Nikolai's dark personality and the lengths he was willing to cross to keep Chloe with him. I loved those scenes so much!

The whole ruthless gangster vibe for Nikolas and then seeing him treat his small son so tenderly just made my heart burst. I couldn't have enough of those scenes. Chloe and Nikolai finally got their happy ending but the path was certainly not easy. The author left an opening for us about another future couple and holy shit, I think I'll trade my firstborn to get my hands on that book especially because it gave me the whole Hades and Persephone vibes.

The whole duet was pretty amazing to me. This duet was less darker than what Anna usually writes but I loved it as much as the rest of her books. If you want to see a ruthless man who was a killer and was also a tender father with lots of cute baby moments, then make sure you read this duet! It's the best!

Woof

Ya know, I was gonna write a long scathing review. But honestly? This book just isn’t worth my time. If you’re looking for some intense mafia dude action, you are looking in the wrong damn place.

The result of the cliffhanger?

How I felt about the h?

My face when I realized we were only going to get 2 sex scenes for the entire duet:

Me figuring out that the H was a huge disappointment.

Me 90% of this book:

When I realized that the last 15% of the book was a shootout

When I got to the snooze-fest HFN ending.

Bottom Line? I kid you not, this book ends with A NAP. 😐
⭐️⭐️

⚠️SAFETY SQUAD SPOILERS⚠️
- no cheating or sharing

- no OW/OM drama

- no dubcon

- nothing of note happens in this book. 😐

Super boring, albeit annoying at times. I feel like there is absolutely no development, and the heroine is still afraid of the hero most of this book too. I also get sick of hearing about hero's sex past, and I wish the heroine would have talked about hers so he can at least be jealous too🙃. Anyways, super repetitive and nothing really new from the first book. If you had cut out the 50 million times they go to a meal, or the horniness of the MCs, this duet could have been shaved down to one book.

I WANT MORE OF THIS BOOK! SERIOUSLY I LOVE IT VERY MUCH IT MAKES ME WANT MORE😜🤩🤩

You won’t be bored when you watch this series. Its hot and dangerous in a right way, its thrilling with all the enemy and past between this couple, its romantic and lovely too so its the best thing ever 😏😜🤩🤩

This couple have been through a lot in their life so to see them grow and have their hot romantic love going on and help themself to be better is so romantic 🥺🥺🥺🥺 also I’m happy that even though they been through a lot, both are so passionate about each other and love so much. Like the issues that they have, it didn’t and never bother them to bring that into their relationship. Their relationship comes first from everything.... 🥺

‼️‼️‼️SAFE HOT ROMANTIC LOVE STORY

‼️‼️‼️NO DRAMA WITH OW AND OM. The drama is about their past and enemies...

‼️‼️‼️NO CHEATING AND NO SEPARATION

‼️‼️‼️IT HAS PUSHING AWAY ON THIS SECOND BOOK FROM THE HEROINE COUPLE OF TIMES BUT NEVER TOO MUCH... SHE WAS ACTUALLY SCARED AND HARD TO ADJUST AT THINGS...

‼️‼️‼️THE HERO IS OTT POSSESSIVE PROTECTIVE HOT HANDSOME ALPHA MALE 😏

also the hero is a single dad but never marry his son’s mother, it was a one nightstand.

‼️‼️‼️THE HERO IS OBSESSED AND WANTS THE HEROINE SOOOOO BADLY.... SO HOT🥺🥺🥺 i want one! Hahahahaha

Even though the hero is mostly scary looking and intense but the way he loves the heroine is so hot and just right. WHEN THE HEROINE GOT INJURED (not too badly) FOR COUPLE OF WEEKS like 2 weeks, the hero really cared for her physically and emotionally... the hero really make sure the heroine is taken care of even when the heroine push him away.

“I CAN’T WATCH HER LIMP. IT HURTS ME TOO MUCH SO THE ONLY WAY THIS HIKE IS HAPPENING IS WITH HER IN MY ARMS.” 🥺🥺🥺

“I LOVE HOLDING HER, FEELING HER PRESSED AGAINST ME. UNTIL HER ANKLE IS HEALED, I INTEND TO CARRY HER AROUND AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND MAYBE AFTERWARD AS WELL.”

Like almost everyday, he bathed her and help her eat and clean and almost everything. Like wow🥺🥺

‼️‼️‼️THE HERO ALWAYS SAYS TO THE HEROINE AND EVERYBODY AND TO HIMSELF THAT SHE IS MINE. MINE. MINE. MINE.

“Mine. She’s fcking mine. I want to consume her, devour her, brand her, take her, savage her.

“My need for her is obsessive and dark, dangerous to her and to me.”

“She’s mine, and I’ll annihilate anyone who’s ever hurt her.”

“I NEED THE WORLD TO KNOW THAT SHE’S MINE, THAT SHE BELONGS SOLELY TO ME.”

‼️‼️‼️THE HERO’S SON IS SOOOOO CUTE🥺🥺
He is so welcoming to the heroine and always hugs her no matter what. Sooo cute awwww🥺🥺🤩

‼️‼️‼️EVEN WHEN THE HERO AND HEROINE FINALLY GETTING MARRIED AND AFTER. THE HERO WILLING TO TAKE THE HEROINE’S DEMANDS SO THEIR WEDDING WILL BE NICE AND GOOD... LIKE HE SAID YES AND MAKE SURE SHE’S GOOD.

“WHEN WE’RE OLD AND GRAY, I WANT TO LOOK BACK AT THE PICTURES AND VIDEOS AND RECALL EVERY DETAIL OF THIS DAY.”

“MY BRIDE. MY WIFE. NO TWO WORDS HAVE EVER FELT SO RIGHT, SO SATISFYING. I WANT TO WATCH HER WAKE UP IN MY ARMS EMBRACE TOMORROW MORNING, AND EVERY MORNING FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES.”

‼️‼️‼️we can see the hero and heroine are more open towards one another and show their true self.

‼️‼️‼️VERY HOT SMUT SCENES😏😏😏

‼️‼️‼️HAPPY ENDING. MARRIED...

I WISH I CAN SEE THEIR FUTURE KIDS OR EVEN OLDER AND LONGER THAN THAT BUT HOPEFULLY IN THE FUTURE BOOKS 🙏🙏🙏😜 finger cross

This story is so romantic and hot it made me want to read the whole series! Big fan of this author😍😍 this story was so good like seriously I’m addicted.

PLEASE AUTHOR!!!🙏🙏🙏🥺 I NEED MORE FROM THIS SERIES. FROM THE MOLOTOV SERIES AND THEIR SIBLINGS LIKE PRETTY PLEASE🥺🥺🥺🥺 hopefully the entire series from this book comes with a great characters. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

🌐🌐🌐➡️↘️⬇️➡️This is my own personal thoughts and opinion about the book so if thats not sit right with you or you feel I’m not being fair blablabla, please know that everybody in this world have their own different things that they like and don’t like. It may not be the same thing with you but thats okay because i am my own person and you cannot control me or tell me what to do. For example; i put ketchup (tomato sauce) on my fried chicken. You think that’s disgusting? For me its not and i’ve been eating it like that for many many years. You tell me to put another sauce and see if i like that better? I already did many many times in years but i still like the way i like it. It’s called differences between me and you and billions people in this world😊 be open minded😙 I respect people’s opinions about my opinions but in the end of the day if i say I don’t like it or i do like it, its up to me and its on me. And in the end of the day i always liked and show my respect to books and people’s opinions on books whenever that book is good or not good in my opinion 😊 Respect people’s opinions guys😙😙 I don’t want to write this down because its not really my thing to do it. To like address something like this when obviously i know the people who’s been reading my reviews many times and all the time, they are smart enough to understand and respect other people’s opinions no matter what their opinions on book or their point of view 😙😙 am i right? 💕 but if you still wants to be negative and be karens about my review on book, i will never acknowledge you 🙏 ⬅️↖️↕️⬅️↩️⤴️

2.75 - 3 stars!

This is the conclusion to Chloe and Nikolai's story and to be quite honest I was underwhelmed. At the end of book 1, Nikolai kills men who were about to kill Chloe. She is rescued by Nikolai and she sees the man he truly is. Nikolai is horrified he almost lost Chloe and has now decided to bind her to him through marriage. With the threats still surrounding his love, Nikolai sets out to find answers and rid the world of the threats to Chloe. Can Chloe reconcile the man she knew to the man she knows now? Can their love blossom and stand strong through the coming ordeals? Will Nikolai be able to show Chloe how deeply he feels for her?

So, I was more interested in Alina's possible story than Nikolai and Chloe's story. Their love felt a little fast and not authentic. The sex didn't feel passionate or all consuming to me and I wasn't invested in them as characters or lovers. Nikolai was supposed to be this badass anti-hero alpha male and his actual possessive and obsessive nature was mediocre at best. Chloe was too one-dimensional and I desperately wanted more grit to this story. The whole threat surrounding Chloe fell kind of to the side. Overall, the conclusion just lacked the punch I was hoping for in regard to their relationship and the looming threat.

I want to add that I love this author and I will continue to read her books...I know that I won't like everything an author writes and unfortunately this series fell in that category for me.

Recensione in Anteprima della versione italiana La Gabbia dell'angelo sulla mia pagina Bookstagram
https://www.instagram.com/p/CVe3rvXsU...

Usually, I love Anna’s storybooks.

But I finally have a lot of trouble with this series.
I already had a hard time with book 1, the fact that the story drags on in details, the lack of development of feelings of the two protagonists, the Insta Love was borderline annoying and the most disturbing can be the development of the main female character.
I have a lot of trouble with the character of Chloe, maybe too immature, and her impassiveness more than annoyed me.

And I expected a lot from book 2, maybe too much.

Things don't change, Chloe always lets herself be carried by the wind. She is bland, I’ve got no other words to describe her.

I had a hard time finishing the book, but hey I paid for it so I managed to finish it. this is not what I’ve come to expect from her, this was one of the most boring books I’ve read for a long time.

Like someone else said for the first book, if it wasn’t written that Anna Zaires was the author, I wouldn’t believe that it was written by her.

I wasn’t part of the ARC, I just bought the book early thanks to Amazon. So it is an honest review from a longtime reader.

PS: The positive is maybe the intro of a new couple, but the disappointment of these two books will undoubtedly mean that I will probably not buy the next volumes.

He’s pretty decent. All the character traits I tend to love in a hero: possessive, obsessive, hot, dangerous, etc etc. But his love declarations came in so fast. There’s too much self awareness of his own “obsession” and underservingness/guilt regarding her. The dark romance formula is terrorise the heroine first THEN fall in love? Don’t switch it up... She’s so meek too, so his obsession left me with a huge fat WHY ?8!3/?

Heroine is mad boring. Prezzy Plain Jane. I was waiting for some va va voom... A bit of grit. But she’s not his match in my honest opinion. The fact that he chose her is disappointing independent of anything else. Especially when she was being purposefully dense:

I swallow again. “When you said ‘men like me,’ what did you mean, exactly?”

Best way to describe it is the characterisation of the leads felt like very watered down versions of Julian and Nora from the Twist Me trilogy. Sorry! AZ is fantastic but this book... not so much. I was struggling to finish.

To top, the duet lacked a direction, a purpose, a concrete storyline. It was worse than the first book especially when you take in the self-sympathisation of the characters. Quite frankly she was living in a fairytale by my account. The background with her father, the crooked presidential candidate was boring and tepid for me.

It will be a good duet for romance lovers who prefer a minimal level of darkness.

100% Safe. He has a son from a ONS 5 years ago - whose existence he learned of recently; mother of child is dead.

The conclusion to Chloe and Nikolai's story continues where we left off with Chloe injured and now back in the arms of her dark knight. Her eyes are now wide open following the previous traumatic events and in the aftermath, Chloe seems to be a strange mix of grudging gratefulness mixed up with plenty of superior judgement.

She's also curiously passive regarding her whole situation frankly I was slightly bemused when it came to her logic and inability to understand what needed to be done. There is innocent and naive and then just plain stupid and kinda asking for the worst and Chloe was bordering on the latter. She's willing to bury her head in the sand and let Nikolai make all the hard decisions and when he does she then plays judge and jury. Never mind that he's doing everything to keep her safe, where is the gratitude? She sees in black and white and skips the grey completely. Frankly, Chloe is infuriating.

Nikolai made up for it though and as much as Chloe could at times exasperate me when it came to him he could do no wrong. He's exactly what I look for in a book boyfriend and Nikolai was doing it for me in every single way. The man's a delicious steamroller and totally obsessed willing to go to extreme lengths to shield Chloe even from her own dangerous naivety. He's also not willing to let her go and he's refreshingly up-front regarding his intention to keep her.

I've got to mention the danger Chloe was in though, as i do wish we had delved into it this more than we did. I also feel that the way this resolved that plot point did feel rather anticlimactic and slightly redundant I do wish we'd focused on it as it felt like a missed opportunity.

This second book for me had a slight edge over its predecessor and I did enjoy myself. It was well written and an easy read and gets an easy thumbs up from my camp it wasn't perfect (cough, cough, Chloe) but I did devour it in record time.

I am sad to say that book 2 was boring for me... :/

In spite of every part of implemented action sequence, the storyline was bland, plain and annoying...

And the most annoying of all things was the endearment - "zaychek"

that's Russian for rabbit, not even a bunny, but a rabbit...pfft, to hell with that...it ruined the whole endearing spectre for me...

there... *drops mic*

I think I’m just gonna have to accept the fact that AZ isn’t my jam and that’s okay. This duet hit similarly to how her previous works have done for me, so points for consistency?

I’ve been sitting here staring at my split ends tryna figure out how to articulate this and I’ve gotten no where. So I’m just gonna word vomit.

I think AZ wants to build rich worlds full of complex characters with meaningful backstories, but I end up walking away acutely feeling the lack of depth in her storytelling. Almost like if I picked up a diary, fully expecting to get all the tea, complete with juicy details, but instead I read an outline of events with a summary of the relevant emotions listed. The info is there. I know what happened. I just don’t feel anything.

Anyway. I’m sure I’ll try again in a year or so. 🙃

If you are looking for the typical dark reads from this author, this one isn’t it. It’s not dark or really mafia. I would call this romantic suspense. I loved his Teddy Hamilton tried to sell this character as a monster. The low menacing tone wasn’t enough to make Nikolai believable as soulless monster. I do love Chloe and Nikola and Slavs. Chloe seems like a smart girl so this business about being afraid of the Nikolai was also not believable. The author was trying to create drama but it wasn’t necessary.
It was an okay ending but
*not really mafia
*sexy scenes were just okay
*loved the development of father son relationship
*Would have loved more information on the sister Alina

It seems I am conflicted when it comes to the Molotov Obsession Duet by Anna Zaires. I personally feel there is a real lack of development between Chloe and Nikolai. The connection between these two is solely based on Insta-love and there were several occurrences where I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. Chloe was just too immature for her age and the story dragged right from the get go.
Unfortunately, I just couldn’t stay connected to the story which is a shame because I adore Anna Zaires writing.

Unfortunately the chemistry didn’t improve. Too much insta and dull heroine. The plot was interesting and I would read the next book. The next main characters appear to be more interesting but we shall see ...

3 stelle e 1/2

Angel's Cage is the second book in the Molotov Obsession duet and must be read after Devil's Lair. I actually enjoyed this book! At first, I was apprehensive about this couple because I kept questioning why Nikolai was so obsessed with Chloe. What made her so special? But as I continued reading, I began to realize that they surprisingly fit well together because of their past backgrounds and personalities. Nikolai was obsessive, controlling, and dominant whereas Chloe was equally obsessed with her "captor," naive, and submissive. Both were extremely passionate towards each other. These dynamic qualities led to some super sexy and erotic scenes between the two.
"I'm the only one for you now as well. No other man will ever touch you. You're mine as much as I'm yours."

I would say that this duet toes the line between the erotic and dark romance genre because it feels much grayer and tamer compared to others that I have read. Nikolai's dark obsession with Chloe was the main focal point of this book because it portrays him as a man who is conflicted and unable to forgive himself because of his actions. I actually really liked this quality about him. He loves Chloe and wants her for himself by any means possible but he's constantly afraid of what will happen to him if he loses her and his son Slava. I didn't care much about Chloe at first because I didn't find her unique or special but she grew on me. Her love, compassion, and understanding for Nikolai saved him and that's all that matters.
"My need for her is obsessive and dark, dangerous to her and to me."

Chloe and Nikolai's story has ended but there is still so much more to come from this dark and tantalizing world that Anna Zaires has created. It sets the stage for future couples including Alexei and Alina (think Hades and Persephone vibes) and the upcoming duet between Charmaine Pauls and Anna Zaires featuring Alex Volkov and Katherine. In the end, I have enjoyed reading Chloe and Nikolai's story of forgiveness and redemption as well as love and obsession. I've only read from Anna Zaires once so I am really impressed by her writing and world building. I'm definitely looking forward to future works from her! If you love reading about obsessive and dominant heroes who will do anything to keep and protect his heroine, then I highly recommend giving this duet a try!
