A Phildickian Trip thru Space, Time, and Beyond! A full-color illustrated graphic novel dedicated to author Philip K. Dick. This colorful, psychedelic adventure carries the reader along a convoluted stream of events like a leaf riding rapids. The loosely drawn, lively narrative panels are interspersed with dazzling full-page compositions of surreal magnificence.
Space opera meets mysticism in a series of images that carries you beyond the familiar world and into pastures bizarre. In 'Legends of the Mind' our hero (David) flits from one state of reality to the next, waking from a dream, activating or deactivating an immersive hologram, or being teleported to a new realm. There is no way of telling which, if any, of the arenas he finds himself in are 'real' reality or some alternative illusion. Woken by his radio playing the song The Martian Time-Slip, David drops the hypodermic on the floor. Staggering to the bathroom he is 'zapped' into a space car, flying through the air towards a concert hall. Arrested for being a 'commie', he finds himself interrogated by a telepathic slime mold from Ganymede... a creature who soon becomes frustrated at David's dogged insistence on his conspiracy theories. Rescued from a mental institution by a mysterious author, he finds himself communing with a higher dimension of intelligence. A new journey begins.

The Legend of the Mind consists of four primary chapters filled with time travel, telepathy, drug paranoia, political conspiracies, space travel, rock and roll, dystopian future, alternate realities, and spiritual overtones. There is also an epilogue that consists of fine art paintings inspired by quotes from Philip K. Dick's Exegesis, as well as illustrations to poems from poets that Philip K. Dick was inspired by.
Graphic novels are not my usual fare when I grab a book however, I figured I'd take a chance on this one. I'm glad I did. The story followed a single character through his journey through time, space, and 'medicinal' use. Graphics were well done, fit the scenes, brightly colored and moved nicely as the story progressed. If you're in the mood for something a little different this is one I would recommend for those who enjoy these types of stories.
I don't normally read graphic novels but this one may just change that. The stories in themselves were great but the illustrations were very impressive and I've never seen art or illustrations like this anywhere else. A great book. Well done.
Jeff Hoop dedicates his graphic novel to author Philip K Sick. It draws from Dick' s themes of alternate realities. The early chapters bring to mind the comics of childhood. The serious - 'your wife signed a court order' - is interspersed with the familiar frames - 'Crack', 'Bam', 'Pow'.
The illustrations are good in the comic section itself, but the later fine art paintings, inspired by quotes from Philip K Exegesis are stupendous, brilliant colours making intriguing artwork.
The whole work raises some interesting concepts that leave you pondering.
Loved this book. Very much in the vein of the Underground Comix of the 60's, with virtually every line and scene a reference to Philip K Dick. This book includes a great selection of masterful surrealist paintings as well.
Digital edition is a little hard to read in some passages- Try to find a print edition!
I won this book “Legend of the Mind” by Jeffrey Hopp, through a GoodReads giveaway. This graphic novel is strange and wonderful. Absolutely beautiful images that remind me of the trippy colorful posters of the 70’s. The story left me feeling like someone was fornicating with my gray matter, but the artwork was awesome and made the “trip” worth it.
Attention, fans of Philip K. Dick! If you haven't seen this highly strange visual tribute yet, you ought to give it a read. And yeah, in case you were wondering, it's dreampunk as heck.
My thanks to Goodreads for an advanced copy of this graphic novel. Jeffrey Hopp's Legend of the Mind harkens back to the late 60's early 1970's when underground comix were just becoming a thing, and the late author Philip K. Dick was chugging out masterpieces of science fiction fueled by his thoughts on religion and God and a lot of amphetamines. In other words this is grand stuff. Every panel is packed with art and meaning, every word somehow tied into Philip K. Dick's life and writing. I really loved the art sort of a throw back to classic comics with a surrealistic psychedelic feeling. Like a Grateful Dead concert poster.
A very good read, especially for fans of Philip K. Dick. I can't wait to read more by Mr. Hoop.
I had to read this twice to make any heads or tails of the story. Seems it's about a rockstar who is abducted by some crazy guys from an enemy realm, but even after two readings, I couldn't make much more out of it than that. I was left thinking, "WTH did I just read? Is there supposed to be more to it??" Still, the artwork was pretty awesome. The author is quite talented in that respect. If you're into sci-fi and graphic novels, you might want to check this one out.
I can't get over the many talents of the author and artist! The illustrations are gorgeous and in a variety of styles. The writing is deep and witty. If you are a science fiction fan and know Philip K. Dick's work, this book is even more meaningful. I loved the guided reading feature, which made the reading even more enjoyable. I am very impressed with everything about this graphic work!
Different to what I've ever read before. Wierd and wonderful all rolled into one. Blown away by the brightly colourful art work that accompanies this story and the detail of each scene and character makes it easier for the reader to follow the story. Takes you back in time to the 70's hippy high days. Good job well done Jeff!
As one who has always loved comic books, which combine art and story so well, I am very happy that this author is keeping the tradition alive and getting it on kindle. The art is fantastic, and I'm happy to be exposed to the world of Philip Dick, who I was only barely aware of. Keep up the good work!
The artwork is insane. It reminded me of the yellow submarine. I’m a huge comic book collector and I’d be proud to put this in my collection for the art alone. The unique stories are a an added bonus.
Artwork was AMAZING! I’m not a big comic book reader, and found this a bit hard to follow at times, but it had a lot of depth and detail. Feel like I had my first LSD experience LOL. Not a comic for children, but for adults or older teens possibly.
I've not read a graphic novel like this before and it was very interesting. I really enjoyed it and the graphics are amazingly colourful and intricate. It's a beautiful peice of work and would definitely enjoy reading more.
Wow. The artwork in this is amazing. I’m a huge comic fan and I’d be happy to put this in my collection. The unique stories take you to other worlds. Great job!
This is definitely an interesting read if you’re in the headspace for some crazy sci-fi business! A bit difficult to follow for my limited mind but that artwork throughout was amazing and psychedelic. Definitely check it out if only for that.
I won this book through a Giveaway here on Goodreads.
This was different. I kind of had a hard time keeping up with it. I did like the illustrations. It went from a graphic novel to pictures with captions under them.
