Student Resistance in the Age of Chaos

Student resistance in the first decade of the 21st century was the single most powerful liberating force around the globe during those years. Challenging governments--in a few cases, overturning governments--at a time when representational democracies appeared weak and authoritarian regimes were on the rise. In , Mark Boren goes continent by continent, country by country, to show us the contours of the new frontlines of resistance, the sacrifices that were made, the seismic changes caused by the Internet, and the new powers of surveillance and military technology that governments across the globe used to monitor and suppress student groups, raising the stakes and the human cost of resistance in many countries. Mark Boren's previous book on the subject, (Routledge), charted the history from medieval times through the modern period, stopping in 1999. , takes us forward into the eventful first decade of the new century, and is being published simultaneously with . As Mark Boren writes in the book, "Student resistance throws into relief the relationships within our societies between the rulers and the people. It defines cultural moments and indicates the directions in which nations are heading. And if student activism has a rich and storied past, it is just as true that student movements are shaping the world more than they ever have before."

I received this ARC from Edelweiss.

Teenagers...they are constantly dismissed as pampered, stubborn, lazy, and apathetic. The global student resistance movements documented in this book oust that notion. These students risked their liberty and often their lives to improve not only their own lives but the lives of those with even less opportunities. They utilized their imaginations, technological abilities, and, in some cases, humor to change the countries they lived in or at the very least to bring awareness of the oppression and violence under which they struggled. The Author writes these stories through a compassionate lens and with a gravitas befitting the subject. He never allows the reader to become complacent or distracted by extraneous material. This is a very focused and readable book. Watch for it to be released in early August.

Well researched survey of the early 2000's student protest movements across the planet. Discussed widely at first on major themes of protest topics an tactics, the book then dives into a more nuanced region by region analysis.

So far so good, very enjoyable series, it is the backstory to lots of disparate actions I read about as they were happening, good to read the backstory and long-term outcomes of that era.

This book is good for historians, activists and teachers.
