It was supposed to be a myth. An urban legend. The ultimate adventure experience, unlike anything else in the world. The legendary Crab Island. Its reputation precedes it, yet no one really knows anything about the place, including its location. But that’s not stopping Andy Hudson. Internet fame awaits the person who first uploads pictures and videos from the mysterious location, and Andy is determined to be that person. With best mate Leigh in tow, he has travelled to the far corner of Panama in search of this Holy Grail. But the island is secret for a reason. A deadly reason. And when Andy and Leigh, together with three likeminded tourists, do find their way to the infamous island, they have no idea the danger that waits. Not even when the waters surrounding the island fill with thousands of dinner plate sized shapes with curious oval eyes, long spindly legs and a sharp, curved claws, do they realise the peril they are in. But it won’t take long for them to learn the true reason so little is known about the place, because nobody ever leaves the Island of the Crabs…
I’m targeting a 4.5 star rating here. I have never, ever in my life been so hungry for seafood. This was an absolute gem of a creature feature. Had a great cast of characters, a really unique plot in a very familiar location, and enough twists to make me dizzy. Now, on the characters, I really enjoyed how it was kept to four people. And each person had their own portion of the story where we saw things from their point of view. Each person had their own doubts, fears, and emotions. And they all became totally enmeshed with one another with some really intriguing dynamics. I was not at all prepared for Leigh’s character arc, but I liked it. I liked them all. Dirk was a little meh, but he still served his purpose. Now the crabs were the stars of this book. They were small, medium, and even had a crabasaurus (I made that up and you know you love it.), too. They provided the right amount of effect to make me squiggle in my seat. And they were smart. Like what?! When they attacked and set traps, it reminded me a bit of how the puppets from Puppet Master killed their victims. Slow and cerebral. Now the ending was something else that I didn’t expect, and normally don’t like that particular type of finale, but it fit this really well. This is my Steven J Taylor story and I had a blast. All fans of creature features should give this a look.
An amazing and quick read that was way better than I expected it to be. The tension and horror is up the charts in most of the book and it never let it go once it starts creeping in. The death scenes were some of the best I've read for quite a long time. That was truly a great return to the horror genre for me.
The fact that crabs creep me out helped a little bit too. But just a little!
And that cover *chef's kiss* I just love those homage to old school books. The perfect package for a cheesy and bloody story like that.
Recommended for anyone who wants a quick and fun horror book to enjoy in one sitting.
My wife and I enjoyed reading this book to each other. The characters were fairly dumb and self centered. None of them but Leigh had survival experience. Lots of twists of the characters. I won’t tell you the ending but it is a surprise. These people almost deserved what happened with their poor choices and stupidity. They didn’t even have appropriate defense clothes r weapons for such a dangerous place.
This book!! So I love eating crab legs, but now I just don’t know. Island of the Crabs by Stephen J. Taylor, was unreal!! It was upsetting, disappointing then angering at how it all played out, leaving me filled with cringe. In other words, the story wasn’t bad. Not bad at all.
Very good book. Friends turn on each other in a battle for survival. The island of the crabs has a nice setting but this is far from a beautiful and relaxing place to spend holidays. Vivid descriptions that make you live the experience of the characters... some horrible moments and an unexpected ending. This book has it all!! Highly recommended.
