Excellent Character and World Building

4.5 out of 5 stars

I can’t believe that I started and finished this yesterday. I had a migraine and I was having trouble focusing on anything, so I thought I’ve enjoyed this series so far, let’s put it on and see how it goes. I didn’t expect to look up at almost 2am as the end of the book played. Knowles really knows how to grab my attention and keep it for hours on end.

The Bright Fight was another great book in this series and one that I obviously enjoyed since I finished it in one day. I know that some people aren’t a fan of shorter books like this, but when you read as much as I do, I need books that jump around in length so that I can split up the stories and remember them. I also need a “win” from time to time, and by that I mean a shorter book that I can get through quickly. Knowles has provided that but hasn’t held back on any of the action or entertainment. I’ve gotten more of that out of The Bright series than I have out of 18 hour stories.

The thing I’ve called out in the first two reviews was Knowles’ ability to create and make interesting characters. Now, we’ve met most of the people in The Bright Fight, but we were introduced to a new character in this one more than halfway through it. And once this specific character was created, I instantly felt like I was transported to the Dragon Mage and Clockwork Chimera words created by Scott Baron. I know part of it was because I was tired but suddenly I was like “wait, this really reminds me of the world that Baron built“. Now, I say that because of a specific character that was introduced and because I haven’t read a world that was as well described as that one in a while – but it’s high praise in my eyes.

The Bright Fight wasn’t action-packed but it wasn’t lacking either. Knowles did a good job of going through the personal stories and introducing some more lore into this world. I could tell that things were going to be winding down in some ways and amping up in others. I like that and I thought that the ending, even though it was still a bit of a cliffhanger, was excellent and leaves things in a place where I could write my own ending in my head, or better yet, continue on with this series as Knowles writes them.

Great Story!💜

Alex Knowles is killing me one book at a time. I’m not a fan of cliffhangers, particularly when I have to wait for the next book. That said, I’m in the series now and I’m so glad because it’s a great one. In this story, friendships are made, alliances are formed and the enemy is everywhere. Hah, no spoilers here. Fantastic continuing story and I can’t wait for more.
The narration was absolutely brilliant. Steve Campbell’s voice acting skills are really showcased in this series and all books in this genre. He makes it easy to distinguish between characters even the male and female characters as well as feeling all the emotions. This is book 3 and does continue into book 4.
I highly recommend this book/series.

Review of books 1-3:

I'm a bit confused on how to properly review or even classify this. This is mostly a standard fantasy fare, but dabbles in a bit of LitRPG and Cultivation, though none of the aspects gain prominence enough to provide a standard genre to park this in.

A good bone of a plot which sadly isn't really focused enough despite a very good prose. The world is never fully introduced to us, there is no history of the factions or what "Bright" is, and why we have stat sheets and cultivation techniques intermixed with sci-fi elements. It's like everything is thrown is. To author's credit, the mix works well, but then without a fleshed out backstory, it just lacks foundation to stand on it's own.

The plot also focuses purely on the MC and at times to the detriment of the macro plot. The timeline sync between the two is jarring and doesn't really align well. So much focus is on the MC and his development, that the fact that there are external events happening simultaneously is missing for big chunks of the book.

It certainly wasn't a bad book, as I had enough interest to finish the first 3 in the series, but not really the finished product that would have elevated this to next level.

Will follow Alex and look out for this forthcoming books!

I think my problem with this series is that I'm sure what the system or Bright is. Another is its pacing. We go again with training being something always talked about, but the plot feels like it doesn't move until we get to the end. The end has some excellent build-up and some fantastic fight scenes—even some nice character development for the MC. However, that's all at the end and sadly not the main plot. So as a whole, it doesn't get good till the end. This sadly ruins a large part of the book because it's so slow and feels like nothing is going on. Sure they are training and building the straps, and we actually get an awesome character. Speaking of characters, there were these twins in the second book; they were special and assumingly consequential for their age. But they haven't been mentioned since the second book. RJ had a great start and now is becoming sidelined. RJ is there and has an excellent character introduced in the second book, but it was not explored further. Hopefully, things get better. This series (so far) reminds me of another series I reviewed before (Legend of Gilia), with great ideas and poor execution.

Bright Fight comes through with all of the stored up potential promised in the first two books! Tytan is on a mission to rescue his friends and anyone else that needs succor along the way. Tytan also comes across a surprising ally in the guise of a chicken who he dubs Juteng! (No I'm not saying any more about Juteng, but once you meet, I know you're gonna love her.)
Steve Campbell's wonderfully nuanced narration gave distinct voices to all characters, so you can easily follow the action without losing track of who's who...
So grab Bright Fight, sit back, enjoy... and before you know it, I'm sure the audio version of book 4 will be out!

Really fun concept with an epic feel. I like that our MC is becoming more and more useful. There are some surprising additions to the crew. We also encounter a big obstacle in our biggest antagonist to date.

I really enjoy listening to the whole series. This installment was really fantastic It got more action, more discoveries, more training, and a good amount of intrigue and drama. Alex Knowles really knows how to subtly tug and crush one's heart. I have ugly cried in every book. LOL.

What else to say about Steve Campbell that I haven't said before? He's just one truly talented performer. Bravo!
