Seven years ago, I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, a debilitating condition that combines the features of schizophrenia with that of depression and addiction. This short guide shares the lessons I have picked up in the years since diagnosis and is meant to help the recently diagnosed come to terms with their state of mind and learn to live happier, more successful lives.
When I was first diagnosed, I thought my life was over. That was not what happened. I have had to learn to live and function inside my own head again and it is an ongoing process, but my disorder does not hold me back from achieving my goals. If you’re looking for a memoir, this book is not for you. This is an analysis of the experience and how to cope and thrive, not a narrative.
Topics covered
• The weeks following diagnosis
• Getting past the initial despair
• Learning to like yourself again
• Medication
• Specific symptoms and how to deal with them
• Coming out about the illness to close friends and romantic partners
• Addiction as a Schizoaffective
This book is intended to give hope to the recently diagnosed and has been written to be around a one hour read to keep it accessible to people who may not be open to more long-winded advice books.
Books can be attributed to "Anonymous" for several reasons:
* They are officially published under that name * They are traditional stories not attributed to a specific author * They are religious texts not generally attributed to a specific author
Books whose authorship is merely uncertain should be attributed to Unknown.
This book is written by an individual who suffers from schizoaffective disorder. He is a highly functioning man who has figured out how to live a full life by accepting his diagnosis and learning to deal with the psychotic symptoms. He shares his techniques for better living and success.
My only gripe with this book is that it was obviously not reviewed by an editor. Typos and mis structured sentences occasionally make the topics difficult to comprehend. I’m a grammar nazi bc of my conditions and this book annoyed me several times with its poor grammar and confusing sentences. But I got through it.
It’s a very quick read and can be finished in a couple of hours. I highly suggest it for people suffering from the disorder as well as their friends and family members. It will help them to understand the condition and to be more empathetic about schizoaffectives.
This is NOT a very good book about schizophrenia as whoever wrote it thinks that therapy will help! HA! Therapy does NOT help this illness. It is biochemical and so needs a good diet and some prescription drugs. A journalist in England wrote an excellent book about his son's schizophrenia which was triggered by smoking pot so read that instead of this drivel.
I found this short book helpful and reassuring. The fact that individuals with schizoaffective disorder can lead a good life brings comfort. If only someone could tell me how to get a person who needs it to read this book. (The book contained a lot of typos which was annoying but the information was helpful).
