One of the very informative books on basic Islam that I have read. Those Muslims wanting to give this book as a gift to non-Muslim friends, must first read the book themselves, as there are many things about Islam that I only began to understand after reading this book(I'm a 'born' Muslim).

Succinct, precise and most importantly easy to read and comprehend. A great book by Maulana Maududi for Muslims and Non Muslims alike in order to better their understanding of Islam.

I really wanted this book, or any book related to Allah SWT and his Deen, to be my first read on Goodreads this year.
And, Alhamdulillah, my wish is fulfilled.
This book is written in a very simple language, and it is very easy to understand all that it explains.
It is recommended to all beginners to know "OUR DEEN ISLAM."

February 24, 2018يفترض المودودي، وكأي مسلم نموذجي، ضرورة وجود الإيمان، كقضية قبلية سابقة على أي خبرة ومعرفة، ويعدها نقطة البدء والانطلاق. فهي لو شئنا فلسفة الأيًا كان، الأفكار الفطرية التي تحدث عنها كانط، وهي موئل حكمة الإله في فلسفة لايبنيز، وهي البناء المحكم الذي افترضه ديكارت في الدين.
لذا، يضعنا المودودي، ومنذ بداية الكتاب، وقبل التعاريف. أمام هذه النقطة: إن مجرد إيمانك هو محك القضية
فلا بد أن تؤمن بأن الله موجود.
وأن الله عادل
وأن الله حق
وأن ما سوى ذلك سراب.
لا بد أن تؤمن بأن ما يقرره الله هو الصواب، لا لأنه صواب، ولكن لأن الله قرره
لا بد أن تؤمن بأن الجميع مسلم
جمادًا كان أم بشرًا
ولا بد أن تؤمن بأن الله قد أخذ من المؤمنين ميثاقًا بوحدانيته وإلوهيته، حتى ولو كنت تعبد الأنعام

ينطلق إذن، وكما قلنا، كأي مؤمن، لا مسلم فقط - فالإسلام مرحلة بعدية -كأي مؤمن نموذجي وفي لما يعتقده، من فكرة الإيمان، والإيمان بالغيب تحديدًا. فإذا افتقدت في نفسك هذا الأمر، فاجلس حيث أنت فليس الكلام يعنيك.
يستحوذ الكلام في الإيمان والغيب حوالي تقريبًا ثلثي الكتاب، ويأخذ الكلام عن الإسلام ومبادئه ثلثه الأخير
العقائد، الشرائع، الأحكام، الفرائض، الأوامر والنواهي، الفقه والشعائر، وما إلى ذلك.
هنا، لعل تتجلى المفارقة. فعلى الرغم من افتراض عناية الكاتب بالإسلام، فهو يعنى بشكل أساسي بالإيمان
الإيمان إذا، والتسليم، هو الشرط الأساسي، ومن دونه لا يستقيم للإسلام قائمة
لكن ماذا لو افترضنا، كأي متشكك، ملحد، اتخذ إلهه هواه، ماذا لو افترضنا بكل بساطة وسذاجة، عدم استطاعة الإيمان، وقلنا، كما قال كركجارد مثلا: أنه من الصعب أن تؤمن، لأنه من الصعب أن تطيع؟
الإيمان يفترض الإذعان والانقياد والطاعة، لا الطاعة للرسل فحسب، لكن الطاعة لله، للمطلق، للمجهول، الغير - موجود بشكل مادي، والذي لا ينبغي له أن يكون.
بعيدا عن الإيمان، يستكمل الحديث عن الإسللم
لعل من الأمور الجيدة بالكتاب هو تنظيمك وترتيبه المنطقي للأحداث
فهو كما ابتدأ بالإيمان يستكمل قضاياه بحيث لا يترك إحداها مبتورة
ما معنى الإسلام؟
الإسلام يعني التسليم
لمن وجه هذا الدين؟
للبشرية جمعاء
فيم يختلف عما سواه؟
لم يرتبط باسم أو أمة أو جماعة
فيما يتميز عن غيره من ديانات السماء؟
بأنه دين حي ذو لغة حية وكتاب لا ينطق عن الهوى منزل وموحى
ما شروط الإسلام؟
الإيمان بالله وتوحيده والتبرؤ من الشرك ورموزه ووعي معنى لا إله إلا الله
ما محك الإيمان؟ الحرية
نقد: لماذا نفترض وجود الحرية؟
لأن دونها لا يكون للثواب والعقاب من معنى - يجيب
لماذا نفترض إذن وجود معنى؟
كيف يكون المسلم؟
قويًا، حكيمًا، ليس بقابل للذل.
أي أنه بمعنى أصح، يستند لله في بقائه واعتباره مصدر قوته
لكن ماذا لو أن للواقع اعتبارات أخرى؟
الواقع يحكمه مبدأ القوة، والمادة، وليس بالضرورة مبدأ الحق
فلو أني قررت التبرؤ من الكفر والطاغوتية، لقوبلت بسلطة غاشمة عمياء سياسية أو غير ذلك، لتحكم علي بالموت في غياهب السجون.
فأين هو مبدأ الحق؟
أنواع الناس الأربع:
مؤمن
مسلم عاص
كافر خير
ملحد عاص
لماذا نفترض أن الأمور بهذه السلاسة؟
لم نفترض انعدام الخير فيما ليس بمؤمن؟
ولو أنه فعل الخير، لم نفترض أنه فعله غفلة وفلتة من أمره؟
لم نسلبه خيره، فقط. لأنه يعبد مطلق آخر مغاير؟
الجزاء والعقاب:
يفترض الكتاب بشكل أساسي وكنقطة انطلاق ذلة الكافر وعزة المؤمن
لكن ماذا لو أن الواقعريشهد بالعكس؟
فهنا يكون الذليل هو المسلم المهضوم حقه، والعزيز هو الملحد الكافر الغربي ذو السلظة الغاشمة؟
ألا تنقلب الآية حينئذ ويصير الإيمان بلا أي معنى؟
لو أنه قرر أن العزة والذلة أخروية، لانقضى الأمر
لكن، حتى في حالتنا هذه، ألا يصير الدين، كما قال فرويد الذي لا أحبه، دعوى لتسكين الآلام ومخدر تستنيم به الشعوب؟
أعتقد أني انتهيت من عرض الكتاب وجوانبه الإيجابية: التي ليست بقليلة، أظهرها على الأقل الصراحة والدقة والترتيب.
والسلبية: التي هي بشكل بسيط ومختزل: اختزال الدين في الإيمان بالغيب والحكمة الموجهة، وانحسار الخيرعن ما سوى المسلمين
وفي افتراضه أن الغيب، بالضرورة، يمكن توجيهه بالعقل
نقطة أخيرة:
الكتاب مليء بالمغالطات المنطقية، حيث أنه بأكمله يقوم على مغالطة الاستناد إلى المجهول
وفي جعله الله إلهًا لسد الثغرات.
أترك الكتاب بلا تقييم لأن الإيمان، كما يبدو، هبة لا تذهب إلا إلى مستحقيها
والهبات أيضًا، كما التجارب الذاتية، لا تخضع للتقييم

تعبت في البحث عن هذا الكتاب الصغير حتى وجدته في إحدى مكتبات مكة الصغيرة القديمة
ولأني قرأت منه صفحة من نسخة الكترونية تحمست كثيراً لقرائته وتيقنت بأن ما سأقرأه لن يكن بدائي الطرح خاصة وانه تجربتي الأولى تقريباً في الكتب الإسلامية
قسمه المؤلف إلى سبعة أقسام : الإسلام ، الإيمان مفصلاً ، النبوة ، الإيمان والطاعة ، العبادات ، الدين والشريعة
، أحكام الشريعة
شرح فيه الكاتب كل مبادئ الإسلام التي على كل مسلم أن يتعلمها والتي تكون مقدمة لمن ولدوا مسلمين أصلاً أن يسألوا : لماذا أنا مسلم/ة ؟ لماذا الإسلام هو الدين العالمي ؟ لماذا أرسل الله النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وجعله آخر الأنبياء ؟ ولماذا لم يجعل موسى أو عيسى عليهما السلام آخرهم ؟ لماذا أصلي ؟ لماذا أخشع وأنوي العمل لله ؟
أسلوبه جداً بسيط ووسطي - مع أنه كرر أكثر من نقطة في الفصل الرابع بطريقة مملة - وأنصح به لكل من لايعرف الكثير عن دينه ومفيد إذا حصلت على نسخة مترجمة منه وأهديته لغير المسلمين
ربما لو قرأت كتباً في هذا المجال أكثر لن أعطيه هذا التقييم

I really loved this book. Several Islamic concepts were discussed quite well in this book, breaking down concepts in concisely accurate ways. I would recommend this book for any human being who wishes to understand the core of Islam better. It's not a long read and the translation in today's English makes the read go even faster (in my opinion as a native American English speaker).

An excellent book with lucid, easy to understand exposition of Islamic principles. The writing style is informal and comprehensible for even those who do not know many things about Islam. The books is an easy read for Non Muslims and contains many things worth
knowing even for Muslims. The books begins with an explanation of the Meaning of Islam and goes on to discuss the nature of prophet-hood with importance of the last Prophet of Islam, Muhammad(PBUH).It further discusses articles of Islamic faith the ways of worship and conduct in daily lives for Muslims and ends with explaining shariah , the Islamic law. The book presents various arguments in support of Quranic injunctions, however some of the arguments that are given are not satisfactory. The pressing argument that Islam is the only way to reach God is not withstanding since almost all faiths of the world essentially contains more or less the same principles. However the book will be useful to clear some misconceptions about Islam since it come from an as authoritative figure as Maulana Maududi.
Maulana Maududi was a controversial figure. Born in British India, he later migrated to Pakistan. There he had to face persecution from authorities because his philosophy was coming in direst challenge to Pakistan's foundation Idea of a secular state. Nevertheless he had a
large following and was recipient of many awards. Maulans's idea of a pefect islamic state where Non Muslims are treated as second class citizens is repressive and unreasonable. The Modern World order of secularism does not find any place in Maududi's ideas. Neverthess Pakistan slipped back from being a Secular to Islamic country and its persecution of Non Muslims very much falls in line with Maududui's philosophy.

Some slick editing by Yahiya Emerick has given this book a very modern approachable touch. I'd still love to read Maududi's book in its original form though. The book attempts to give a broad based summary of the teachings of Islam to audiences that have 'little or no access to its original texts'. what it ends up with is quite an expansive but not very in depth analysis of what it means to be a Muslim.
It is strongest in the opening chapters when it talks about the nature of belief itself and what Islam is. It describes Islam, or submission to God,as the governing force of the Universe. All physical matter, including our very own bodies, submit to this force (in this sense it is the physicists' holy grail: the Grand Unifying Theory of the universe) and that human beings, on account of our free will can decide whether to consciously submit to this force or not. It then goes on to talk about faith in God and obedience as essential factors in the design of this universe.
I like the approach that Maududi has taken. His perspective is unique and sets a firm logical foundation for the rest of his book. Other notable chapters include the one on the prophets of God and the final chapter on the overall picture, that of Islam as it is supposed to work in society as a whole, titled How Does It All Fit Together?
There is a newer version of the book out on Amazon.com. But this version (e-book) can be bought for just above 2 USD. recommended to all Muslims as a way of getting a fresh understanding of the faith and especially recommended to people seeking information about Islam and its way of life.

There is a newer version of the book out on Amazon.com. But this version (e-book) can be bought for just above 2 USD. recommended to all Muslims as a way of getting a fresh understanding of the faith and especially recommended to people seeking information about Islam and its way of life.

I was grateful when my colleague handed me this volume. I am always eager to learn more and deepen my understanding about the wider world especially in faith and philosophy.
While this certainly offers a clear summary of Islam’s history and reasoning, I was a little disappointed at how frequently the text skimmed the surface of conflicts and uncertainties. I’m not sure how much it has to do with the 1932 original or the 2005 update I read, but in a world of complexities it reminded me of the oversimplified “trust in [insert preferred prophet here]” dogma that I heard in fundamentalist Christian corners of my hometown, and Hindu nationalist screeds I found while teaching abroad.
I know that there’s much to learn from Islam, as evidenced by conversations and experiences with Muslim colleagues and neighbors. I appreciated some of the philosophical questions about releasing control this raised, but on the whole it left me flat.

A profound explanation of the concept of Islam.
First chapter starts from explaining the literal meaning of Islam and how, in literal sense, all the creation is “muslim”(submitters).
Then he explains how+why Human Being is MUSLIM “without any choice” in one aspect, and how+why he needs to be MUSLIM “with choice” in other aspect.
2nd and 3rd chapters give reasoning/rationale for the concept of Prophets, why to obey their orders without critique, and how to identify a Prophet in first place.
Later chapters brief on core teachings of Prophet Muhammad, the basic most foundations/pillars of Islam, Deen+Shariyat and demands of Shariyat.
The style of author used in this book is unlike any other I read, the writing directly engages the reader, such as:
“ہم نے تُم کو یہ بات بتائی”, “دیکھو! جب تُم کو کسی چیز کا علم نہیں ہوتا”
Although the prime target of this book were/are Non-Muslims, i would still recommend it to all Muslims of subcontinent. It has content that you will find as new, it will give you more rationale/reason to “why” you have to believe.

A beautiful read. Maulana Maududi simplified the basic concepts of Islam in the simplest language. This is a great book for students who want to understand Islam.
It is a great book for Non-Muslims too who want to understand Islam. The English translated version of Deeniyat is available as "Towards Understanding Islam".
First published in 1937, Deeniyat became quite popular in the sub-continent. It was also taught in schools, colleges, and madrassas back then.

A decent introduction to Islam and its tenets. Great if you want fresh concepts to mingle with normative, "textbook" information. Pretty black and white... lacks nuance, which our age violently demands.

Abul A’la Maududi’s Khutabat: The fundamentals of Islam is a marvelous masterpiece. Indeed this book is glorious in all it’s parts.
I began to understand Islam more inherently after having read this book. It was meant to be abandoned into the piles of old books waiting to be shredded. Somehow Allah made its way to my shelves and then to my heart.
The five pillars of islam are explained in detail yet lucid enough to be easily understood by even non muslims.
If you want to learn about Islam or you are convinced that you have decent knowledge about your deen, then you must read this and get enlightened about the facts that you haven’t ever pondered about.

Maududi’s writing style is simple, succinct, and delivers the maximum impact. I think he’s very gifted and impressive. It's a shame he’s considered a “fundamentalist” nowadays.

1. I recently came across a post about Mawlana Mawdudi and in the comments people accused him of everything from stoking sectarianism to calling for the abrogation of divine law. I think such people need to (have some humility, and) actually read his work. Books like this, with chapters on Mawlana's conception of divine law and Islam's role in society, give a much better perspective of what he was really about. There is certainly space for criticism, but uninformed criticism does no one any good.
2. One of the more informed criticisms of Mawlana that I've heard is that his work attempts to use the vocabulary of modernity to speak about Islamic concepts. I felt that in this book. While I understand the appeal of speaking in a language familiar to your audience, I feel like such attempts, like conflating a Caliphate with a modern nation state, ultimately water down the concepts and give a misconstrued picture for public consumption.
3. This book is a translation into English, and as with many other translations I feel like it defeats the purpose when the English itself does not read well. What purpose does a translation serve if the audience it is meant to engage finds it hard to read. I had to power through the first third of the book because the English really didn't hit (the rest was much better).
4. The first third of the book really made me think about the metaphorical ivory towers we sometimes confine ourselves into. The first two chapters in particular speak of all the good things that theoretically come out of our belief in tawheed (one God) but do Muslims really embody the theoretical benefits of tawheed? Not really. The question, then, becomes how useful is it, really, to write in theoretical terms. I am not generalizing, but, I personally found the analysis in the book very removed from how people behave on the ground.

Towards Understanding Islam is a wonderful and to-the-point effort of Abul A'la Maududi toward making his reader understand Islam. It is a book for a Muslim and a Non-Muslim, for a muslim: it will help him in understanding the foundation of the religion they were born into and will be able to guide and defend his religion, Islam when other people try to corner it and show it in a bad light. For a Non-Muslim, it will also help him understand what Islam is and how effortless and convincing are the teachings of the one-true-religion. It’s a basic book that tells you how to project your religion. We know in rough terms what our deen is, but majority of us, fail to be able to articulate and present it in front of a non-Muslim.
I am impressed by the simple yet profound manner with which Maududi explained the basics of Islam. It should be the way one should teach a young mind or a non-Muslim about Islam. Although Maududis contribution toward politics and Islam is evident throughout his life. This book however does not have any political agendas behind it. The pure intention is to make the reader understand Islam and why it is the best and only true religion on the face of this earth.

October 11, 2018As a Muslim my entire life, I think this book effectively and accurately lays down the framework(s) of how a Muslim thinks and lives. As a more seasoned Muslim, I didn't necessarily learn anything too new and found this to be a bit wordy, though it was a great reminder. I decided to read this book because along my studies of Islam, I've heard of the great scholar, Maududi. Only thing missing was source material (hadith and Qur'anic verses) by which to convince the reader, who might be a non-Muslim, beyond a shadow of a doubt that that is actually what Islam is. Although, to Maududi's credits, I would say many of the statements are actually based on source material. The Islamic way of life is a beautiful way of life. Thank you, Allah. All I can say is the best way to defend Islam is to practice it. And what is the best motivation to practice it: to learn about it.

اشبه بكتب التوحيد لكنه يختلف عنها في انه اكثر استفاضة وشموليه
اعجبني فيه فكرة التدرج الإيماني،
بادئاً بإثبات فكرة وجود خالق للكون ثم إثبات الإسلام الأزلي للكون ثم النبوة والكتب والملائكة وغير ذلك
اعتقد ان الكتاب شبه موجه للذين يردون الاطلاع على الاسلام ومعرفة شخصيته وفكرته، لذا فأنا كمسلم اعلم كثيرا مما يحتوية الكتاب من حيث المضمون ولكن الاسلوب كان جيد
يعيبه انه
اشبه بالمحتوى الإنشائي التعبيري المسهب في كل فقراته اسلوب يضعك في حيرة بين كثرة الكلمات الإسترسالية في الفقرة الواحدة وبين انها محكمة من حيث الجودة والشمولية
في النهاية اعتقد انه من افضل إن لم يكن افضل كتاب في علم التوحيد قرأته

This book primarily deals with basics of Islam, concise history of religion and prophets, basic principles of Islam, and also touch the Shar'ia of Islam.
One can easily finish it in one sitting. However, the content of the book is very basic, though book is about understanding fundamentals of Islam yet I would say that this book is about fundamentals of fundamentals (at least for me).
I am disappointed because I was expecting something extraordinary from Abul A'la Maududi. I would say it was below average read for me.
