Kathryn Shay is a lifelong writer. At fifteen, she penned her first 'romance,' a short story about a female newspaper reporter in New York City and her fight to make a name for herself in a world of male journalists - and with one hardheaded editor in particular. Looking back, Kathryn says she should have known then that writing was in her future. But as so often happens, fate sent her detouring down another path.
Fully intending to pursue her dream of big city lights and success in the literary world, Kathryn took every creative writing class available at the small private women's college she attended in upstate New York. Instead, other dreams took precedence. She met and subsequently married a wonderful guy who'd attended a neighboring school, then completed her practice teaching, a requirement for the education degree she never intended to use. But says Kathryn, "I fell in love with teaching the first day I was up in front of a class, and knew I was meant to do that."
Kathryn went on to build a successful career in the New York state school system, thoroughly enjoying her work with adolescents. But by the early 1990s, she'd again made room in her life for writing. It was then that she submitted her first manuscript to publishers and agents. Despite enduring two years of rejections, she persevered. And on a snowy December afternoon in 1994, Kathryn Shay sold her first book to Harlequin Superromance.
Since that first sale, Kathryn has written twenty-one books for Harlequin, nine mainstream contemporary romances for the Berkley Publishing Group, and two online novellas, which Berkley then published in traditional print format.
Kathryn has become known for her powerful characterizations - readers say they feel they know the people in her books - and her heart-wrenching, emotional writing (her favorite comments are that fans cried while reading her books or stayed up late to finish them). In testament to her skill, the author has won five RT BookClub Magazine Reviewers Choice Awards, three Holt Medallions, two Desert Quill Awards, the Golden Leaf Award, and several online accolades.
Even in light of her writing success, that initial love of teaching never wavered for Kathryn. She finished out her teaching career in 2004, retiring from the same school where her career began. These days, she lives in upstate New York with her husband and two children. "My life is very full," she reports, "but very happy. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to pursue and achieve my dreams."
Typical Shay "marriage in peril" with many of side characters This one is low-ish angst with a solid hea. As usual, all subjects were professionally researched.
BUT The blurb says she falls pregnant, she doesn’t.
Hxh married with a baby. His career is taking off and while he loves her VERY VERY much, his focus is work and money. Her career is important too and she's struggling with her own issues. They don't cheat on each other although she's attracted to an om in her circle of friends- it’s not addressed so probably there for angst factor. He makes silly mistakes like not communicating when he really should be. They go for couple therapy, and all is well.
4 Star reviews of No Easy Choice (Sisters of Fire #3) by Kathryn Shay
No Easy Choice is the third book in Kathryn Shay's latest series and this was at times an emotional read but one that is realistic and certainly resonates with me. This is firefighter Annie Ferris O’Shea and her husband Colin O’Shea’s story and it was a captivating read and one I quickly became invested in. Having recently had a baby Annie and Colin are struggling with all a new baby entails. Dealing with sleep deprivation, money issues and a wealth of other issues both are having a hard time. Communication is the key and so they decide to seek counselling, a brave move since a lot of couples would just bury their heads in the sand. This is a well written story, a story that is not your normal romance, but realistic. It is a story of love, of facing ones fears and of taking a giant leap of faith. It is a story of sisterhood, when their friends step in to offer them the love and support they need.
No Easy Choice is book 3 in the Sisters of Fire series by Kathryn Shay and while each book is a standalone, reading them in order gives you a better understanding of each woman, her background and the camaraderie between them.
Up next is Annie Ferris O’Shea, married to her high school sweetheart, loving her career, just recently had a baby and now that her maternity leave is up they have to make some decisions…going from two incomes to one, staying home and not missing out on they baby growing, modern day versus old society, promotions, longer hours and finding a happy medium for a happy life.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
This is the third book of the series. A group of women went through the fire academy together and formed a life-long support group. They call themselves Sisters of Fire. Each book is about a different woman and her struggles with not only being a female firefighter but struggles in her personal life. While each book if focused on a different woman, the others make multiple appearances. I would highly suggest that the books be read in order to fully understand the dynamics of the group.
Colin and Annie have been married since she graduated from high school and both became firefighters. After 10 years of being happily married, they now face some serious issues. They welcomed Bridget, their baby girl, into their lives. Annie is struggling with being a new mom and having to do all of the parenting by herself as Colin works part-time at his family's garage. They have both worked a full-time job plus a part-time jobs as well. She wants Colin to spend more time with their daughter as time is slipping away and he is missing out on Bridget's daily changes.
Due to his past, Colin has financial issues and saves every penny for the future. Annie wants to open the purse strings a little so she can take another two months of unpaid maternity leave. Adding to the strain on the couple, Colin is jealous that there is a famous author (Brent) that joins in the playgroup that Annie takes Bridge to several times a week. Colin feels that Brent may take Annie away from him.
While this is not your typical romance book as the couple is already married, it is great to read a story that really shows the struggle and work that goes into making a marriage work. I adored reading about this couple and look forward to the next book.
The only downside to me was where. Annie had a few beers while she is still breastfeeding. I will admit that times have changed and maybe these days that is fine but that still bothers me.
Annie and Colin O’Shea have been together for over 10 years and recently had a new baby. The stresses of dealing with nighttime feedings, lack of sleep, and overwhelming responsibilities are eating away at their closeness. Colin has money insecurities, and Annie feels resentment when he doesn’t help with the baby, yet she’s wanted this for so long, that it’s hard to verbalize. This couple is dealing with normal changes that occur when a new baby arrives, and they’re feeling stresses and uncertainties about their relationship as a couple. They decide to get some counseling, and they put some more effort into communicating their feelings.
Kathryn Shay is able to verbalize many of the uncertainties and feeling that appear in a marriage when a new baby joins the scene. Most people who have cared for a small child will be able to relate. There are all kinds of feelings and issues to be navigated, and it’s hard to find time to nurture the relationship with your spouse, when all your time is going to care for a demanding baby. The story needs to be told, to verbalize to new parents that they are not alone, and that others feel the same way. We get to watch as Colin and Annie make choices and verbalize feelings that are so real, and that need to be shared.
This is a beautifully-crafted novella that feels genuine and true. The Sisters of Fire step in when needed, and provide a strong base for this couple. One of the beautiful things about this series of novellas is the relationships shown among the Sisters of Fire. We would all be so lucky to have friends like this in our lives. This is a wonderful addition to this series and well worth the time spent reading!
In this next installment of the Sisters of Fire series, we take a deeper dive into the relationship of Annie and Colin, who are both firefighters now trying to deal with a new baby, marriage, jobs and life in general.
All of the Sisters of Fire books include present and past characters, so we have met Annie and Colin and on the outside it seemed like they had it all, nobody knew the struggles they were facing inside thier house. Annie is headstrong and knows what she wants, to be a mother and a firefighter. She has achieved both goals, however can't make it work without help from her husband. Colin is on the job, but also has a second job. His goal is to take care of his family and to do that, he needs money in the bank, which he has plenty of, to the detriment of his little family.
We travel along with Annie as she tries to figure out how to balance her new life. I love how the sisters are always there for each other and this time around we meet another group that helps Annie out, her park mommy/daddy group. As they aren't firefighters, they give Annie another perspective on the working mom life.
The book is well written and as this is an ARC issue, I'm sure going through final editing. It's always nice to see these women constantly supporting each other no matter what they are going through. Great addition to the series!
I feel that this 3rd installment in the Sisters of Fire series is about work/life balance. Annie and Colin have always been together; first as friends and then as husband and wife. When they have a little baby girl; Bridget, Annie takes some leave from her job as a firefighter. Colin comes from a dysfunctional family where a major part of their issues was money or the lack thereof. So, coming from this kind of situation and learning the hard way that you have to squirrel money away, Colin has a strong feelings about dipping into their nest egg. Annie has extended her paid leave and used all her vacation/sick time and is looking at gong back to work in about 6 weeks. Colin is hardly ever home; working 2 jobs and Annie begins to resent the time away from their home that Colin is taking. Colin starts to worry that Annie is seeing someone else. As you can tell; things spiral into a miasma of hurt, pain, and misunderstandings. Through it all the Sisters of Fire try to help in any way that they can.
I liked that this story dealt with real issues of the day-to-day that almost everyone can relate to. It is a well written story and the characters "came off the pages" for me. I could picture the discussions and the heart-aches. This was a good quick read.
We are back with the Sisters of Fire. Stories about six strong females that bonded as they trained together and since then have created a friendship support group that helps them through the good times as well as the bad ones. This time the story belongs to Annie Ferris O’Shea and her husband Colin. These new parents are at odds since the birth of their daughter. Annie is struggling not only in her new role, but also with feelings that Colin is not helping as much as she wants him to, as well as the fact that she wants to extend her maternity leave. Colin in the meantime, feels the pressure on being on less income. Add to that a possible promotion that will occupy more of his time, and the once easy marriage is going through some bumps in the road. Once again, the author gives us real life situations. In this case that of a working mom, not only the changes a new baby brings to them individually, but also as a marriage. Looking forward to the next story in the series. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Annie fell in love with Colin when they were teenagers and they have been happily married for over a decade. They were excited to welcome their daughter Bridget into their lives but for the first time in their marriage they are experiencing difficulties as they try to find a balance both when it comes to their careers, their finances and each other.
Colin loves Annie with his whole heart however due to his past financial security is very important to him. While Annie has been on maternity leave he has been working two jobs, is studying for a promotion at work and Annie wants him to spend more time with them.
The love between Annie and Colin was never in question. They just had to communicate with each other and find a solution that makes them happy as individuals and as a family. It was great to catch up with the other characters in this series and I really enjoy that despite they are all facing different challenges in their lives how supportive they are of each other.
No Easy Choice is book 3 in the Sisters of Fire Series and this is firefighter Annie Ferris O’Shea and her husband Colin’s emotional story. It’s a captivating read and a great addition to the series of short reads all of which pack a mighty punch. A new baby always brings so much love but they also bring disruption and Annie is struggling as a lot of new mums do with sleep deprivation and all the worries of having a new baby. Colin and Annie realise communication and help is needed so they organise counselling and that’s when this story shows you how much love this couple really have for each other. This is a very different type of romance story, it features real life issues, it’s beautifully written with characters and a story a lot of woman will relate too. It’s about love, fear and must importantly trust, it’s a wonderful read that brings in friendships and the sisterhood at the fire station and it will appeal to a wide range of audiences..
Kathryn Shay is brilliant at bringing us strong heroines in her story which is something that's worth its weight in gold because I really get tired of weak females since I'll never be one of those but I digress. No Easy Choice is Annie's story with her high school sweetheart who is her husband, Colin. They're finally becoming a family of three which totally brings out some issues as everything is magnified when new parents are so very tired, so they're having some problems which came off very realistic in the telling. These two aren't leaving things to chance so they actually seek out counseling because they love each other, and we all know that people can ignore something like that until the bitter end. Again, this story was amazing, realistic, and really hit home so you don't want to miss out! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Colin’s lieutenant birthday party, crew got sub’s to work for them tonight. Annie first night out in ten days, the baby had a cold, a call the baby won’t stop crying to come. Realizing that life changes and choices now to make. Annie wanted 2 more months leave. Colin knew the lack of money from growing up, working extra while she was home. Boss asked him about going to another station and be the boss of his own crew. Getting physical train for it would take extra time, should he even think about it. A good down to earth story, of each deciding what was best for them as an individual, then what they wanted as a family for the love to continue Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
I loved this story because it is so relatable to any couple that just had a baby. Annie's struggles are real and her feelings of what she wants is what many new mom's face. Colin is just trying to make his past not to become his present, he loves his family so much but he doesn't know which way to go. I truly loved this story and all the sisters of fire are present and help Annie along on this journey. I am truly in love with this series because it is so believable and something I can see happening to myself or even a neighbor. I cannot wait to read more in this series. Truly a great story teller in Kathryn Shay, you will not be disappointed.
This is the 3rd book in this awesome series and is Colin and Annie’s story. Annie married her high school sweetheart Colin, and now they have become new parents, they realise that everything changes. Feeling overwhelmed and struggling with sleep deprivation, money issues, and everything which having a new baby entails, they find they re slowly drifting apart from each other, and they know they need to find a happy medium and do something about it before it is too late. This is a well written story with realistic and engaging characters, and is emotionally charged, with friendships, communication, and love, which leads to an entertaining and all-consuming addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
What a heart warming story. So true to what happens when a baby is brou3into a relationship. Annie and Colin have been together since their teenage years. Married 10 years. Their love for each other is evident. Annie wanted a baby and it took two years but now she has Bridget. And things are unraveling. No matter how much you love your spouse/ signifiv5other and want a baby, adding the baby to the mix will bring up all these issues you didn't think about before tge baby. Ms. Shay does a wonderful job showing how even the strongest couple can stumble when a baby arrives but with some communication and remembering that love you can get through it. This is my favorite by far.
This is the third book in the Sisters of Fire series and it is a quick read. I enjoyed visiting with past and future couples, yet Annie and Colin were intense to read. I understood their problems so well - right out of my own life. Money, maternity leave, whether to go back to work and when, creating that new family when a baby arrives and changes everything. These are not new issues for many women. Watching how someone else tackled the issues was engaging. Colin and Annie are both strong, and they love each other so much, that it was quite believable how they resolved their issues. A good read, so jump on in and do it!
You’ll need tissues, and probably wine, and you won’t want to put this book down. The Sisters of Fire are back, and Annie and Colin have a new baby. This is a gritty realistic look at what that means for a couple – how does being a dual-provider family translate to having one parent on “baby” leave? How much can reasonably be expected of the stay-at-homer? I loved the way Annie and Colin worked on this, and I loved the support the Sisters gave them, and the support from other friends and colleagues. It’s a reality many families face -and it’s great to see it addressed in this way. This is becoming a must-read series for me, and the books just get better and better.
Annie and Colin have been married for 10 years but with a new baby, going from 2 incomes to one and a possible promotion, there are lots of challenges and adjustments to be made. There are some misunderstandings along the way as well. Luckily she has the support of her "sisters" to help her work through her feelings and uncertainties. While this is the 3rd book of the series, it's easily read as a stand along. However, if you've read the others it's always great to catch up with all the sisters and see what they are up to and how their relationships are going. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my review.
This is the third book in Sister of Fire series by Kathryn Shay. I really enjoyed it. I was glad I had read the first two - I think it helps. The Sister of Fire series is about a group of women who went to the Fire Fighter Academy. They bonded and have been friends and a support group since they graduated. This one is about Anne and Colin who have been together since high school and are both firefighters. They had a baby which changed the dynamics of the family.
This story is how they figure out how to be a family --- with the help of sisters.
I really enjoyed the story - and am looking forward to the next one in the series.
No Easy Choice is Book 3 is The Sister of Fire Book Series. These are stories about a group of women who went through fire academy together and are great friends and each other support system. This book is based mainly on Annie and her husband Colin. Annie is on an extended maternity leave. She's struggling with new motherhood. Colin is also a firefighter. Both of them are struggling with adjusting to the overall changes in dynamics of their relationship. Any parents out there can really relate to Colin and Annie's reality. I was very happy that Colin and Annie met their issues head on and got the help they needed.
A wonderful addition to the Sister of Fire, six woman who met in the fire academy and have remained friends for the last ten years. This story focuses on new mom, Annie O'Shea who married her high school sweetheart and fellow firefighter, Colin. Life is planned out perfect but life changes after a new baby.
Annie faces many challenges of new motherhood, lack of sleep, changes of roles in the marriage and the dilemma of returning to work.
I believe this book will touch many hearts and you will identify many of the challenges that Annie faces. I had a hard time putting this book down. It is part of a series but all books can be read as a stand alone.
This was book 3 in The Sisters of Fire series. This one is about Annie and Colin, which I found to be hard to read. Hard because you were not sure which way the story was going to go. I felt my heart racing a couple times wondering if this or that was going to happen. I love how all the books bring all the ladies together and you get updates and love how they have each other to lean on. If you have not read the previous books, I would! They are all great and can’t wait for the next book in the Sisters of Fire!
Book 3 in the Sisters to Fire series tells us the story of Annie and Colin. With a new baby, perspective seems to shift for Annie but at what cost? Colin wants to provide for his family but the time away from them may do more harm than good. For Annie, the sisters of fire are there for support. As Annie and Colin navigate their feelings and decisions, they must decide what it most important to them. This was a great quick read and Kathryn does a great job at developing characters quickly and thoroughly in her stories. I'm interested in seeing what the next story brings.
In Sisters of Fire book 3 Annie and Colin are having some struggles after the birth of their daughter. It is rare to read a romance focused on a married couple but even more a book that highlights the decisions a young family often faces when making decisions for the family. The Sisters of Fire really do look out for each other, offering advice and solutions. Through all of the challenges Colin and Annie show their love. What a refreshing book. Kathryn Shay has hit it out of the park. A true real world challenge for couples.
When Annie has her baby, a baby she has wanted and loves dearly, she is soon faced with a choice of when to return to work. Both Annie and Colin struggle with the adjustment of loving their newborn and wanting what is best for her while jiggling careers, promotions and family time. As with many of her other books, Ms. Shay Writes a wonderful story while mixing in real life struggles and showing how to work through issues. She helps to encourage and gives usable solutions that are usable. Kudos!
I really enjoyed this book as it was very easy to relate to Annie and Colin’s struggles with their marriage after their baby arrives. Childhood sweethearts who literally grew up together and went to the fire academy together, things change when they have a baby and Annie really wants some time to be a mom and not return to her job as a firefighter. This puts a lot of various stains on their marriage and the have to go back to their solid love to work through them. I really loved this book and look forward to the next Sisters of Fire book!
The BEST so far! What a wonderful series Kathryn Shay has built for the Sisters of Fire. This is Annie & Colin O'Shea's story. Married for ten years with a new baby, her struggle with working motherhood is real and the story follows their journey as they both adjust to their changing roles. The depth of their love and devotion shines through the struggle and, hopefully, will speak to the readers who may be struggling with this issue in their own lives. Don't miss NO EASY CHOICE!
No Easy Choice ~ Sisters of Fire bk 3 By Kathryn Shay. Another fantastic short read from Kathryn, her books are so detailed and full of strong storytelling that draws the reader in from the very first page. Kathryn goes into such depth with her characters making them real, this is because of her research. Here we have another Sister of Fire, this is Annie O'Shea's story, Annie is on maternity leave and is due to go back to work, can Annie and Colin adjust to parenting and work? This book needs the reader to purchase as I believe spoilers will spoil it for you. Great book, looking forward to the next one. love this series. Thank you, Kathryn, for yet another great read.
Annie and Colin were going through so many changes in their lives that their marriage was not the happiest. I understood the frustration on both sides. I was glad that they had the strength and love to work on staying together. I am enjoying this series and this book was a nice continuation of these ladies and their friendship.
I received a copy of this story through Enticing Journey Book Promotions, and this is my unsolicited review.
No Easy Choice is the third book in the exciting and unique Sisters of Fire series by Kathryn Shay.
I really enjoyed reading this book as it’s not your typical romance.
This story is different as Annie has already found her true love, who is also a firefighter but now they are managing their lives as brand new parents. Annie is in the position that she is currently on maternity leave and has decided to extend that leave by two months. But she’s struggling as her husband, Colin, is almost never home, leaving her with the baby all day and night long.
Annie is exhausted and is desperate for Colin to help out more.
This story shows the troubles that brand new parents face and the struggle that new Mums have when they need to return to work from maternity leave.
I thoroughly enjoyed the different aspects of married life and parenthood that No Easy Choice shed light on.
