Distorted Alabaster Penitentiary Book one is a full length stand alone, M/M romance

I have been anticipating this book for months. I thought I was ready, and Let me tell you I was not; I freaking love this book. Nyla K. Stepped it up more than usual and wrote her best book, Ever. She still writes outside the box and with complex characters, but this is something on a whole new level. I have a feeling this series is going to be off the wall crazy and epic.

My Review

Oh my, this book was everything, I can’t say too much with this one so I’m going to be extremely vague.
It’s is a M/M love story with a difference, it’s highly unique and is best read blind with no preconceptions.

It centres on Dash a bank robber who finds himself incarcerated in Alabaster Penitentiary after his last bank job went south.
It's a place that doesn’t exist and where your basically sent to rot, it’s where they send those they believe unredeemable and this is now Dash’s fate

Context: Dash, a bank criminal, is captured and sent to Alabaster Penitentiary, a prison where they only have special prisoners. There he meets an Officer full of tattoos, who ends up taking his world around in an unexpected way.

I had trouble connecting with the first few chapters, but the story continued and I adjusted.
And yes there are some lines that get blurry and that kept my interest. I knew what I was getting into, and that's why, when I was in the middle, I was formulating an idea o

1.5 stars for the promising start, for the writing, for the cover and for trying to write something different.

First of all, the subjects in this book are topics that I LOVE, that I am obsessed with.. so as much as I did not expect much because the author's notes turned me off, I was still very intrigued. Now let me go to my points (I tried my best to keep this review spoiler-free)

1. An excerpt from the author's note after the last chapter of the book: "And if you’re not disappointed, which let’
Short version: read stupid books get stupid prizes.

Long version: I was thinking this was a 1.5 to 2 star read but good god the authors notes at the beginning and end were so annoying as to ensure I won’t read anything by her again.

It started with a really annoying preamble about how one should not give spoilers. And I would not have a problem with that except this is exactly the type of read I look for true spoilers to. Ones where I am 43% in and just want to stop reading and get the pain over w

Distorted is book 1 in the new Alabaster Penitentiary series by Nyla K. This book is dark and will push your boundaries. It’s MM between Dascha, a bank robber who now finds himself in the worst prison in the country and Officer Kemper, a prison guard who brings Dascha to his knees.

I absolutely adored this book. I’ve been a big fan of Nyla for awhile now b

I read the whole thing because of the disclaimer and the author begging people not to spoil in reviews. I was expecting something to POW right in my face until the last word. It didn’t happen for me. I guess the thing that was supposed to POW was obvious to me. I let myself be taboo baited.

It’s not a spoiler to say this takes place in prison. But be forewarned there’s no world building surrounding it or it’s inhabitants to any level making it as interesting as it could have been. Opportunity mi

This woman is a genius, an evil one i might add, because i never expected any of that!!
I'm still pretty shocked and i definitely need a reread now that i know everything....
Details that looked out of place now made sense, and i'm amazed by the complexity of the story and of the characters.

But let's start from the beginning.

So, you know i was eager to put my hands on this baby since the moment i knew about it ( the many edits, i made before even reading it, can te

“I want Dascha Reznikov to be my broken toy, in all the ways. And I have a habit Of getting what I want, especially when it’s the thing that could be my ultimate demise. “

Ok ok ok. FIRST OF ALL, this is only my second book from Nyla K. My first was To Burn in Brutal Rapture and that was one hell of a book to be introduced to this author.

If I took anything away from reading only two books from Nyla K, it’s going to be, well for one- she’s one of the most talented authors I’ve come across, but, sh

Dascha Reznikov. Bank Robber. Eccentric. Is trying to escape his reality. Dash is focused on his end game. He is trying to get to that slice of paradise, where he ultimately seeks true happiness- and is meticulous in his planning to do whatever it takes to get there.

Officer Kemper. C/O. Underestimated. He embodies what his job entails, and keeps himself at arms length from others. Kemper alleviates from relationshi

Distorted.... well that just about sums up my brain after reading this book. I ain't lying.

This story is a dark mm romance that follows Dash and Kemper, prisoner and officer at Alabaster Penitentiary, an off the grid facility housing some of the most complex and intriguing characters who are imprisoned for life.

The chemistry between these two was electric from the get go. I'm sure sparks flew out of my kindle at one point. You know with a Nyla book you're getting down and dirty and this story

I really couldn’t make my mind up with this one - was it a 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars or a rounded down to 3 stars? Either way I enjoyed it😊.

I won’t give any details because the author has asked for no spoilers, but suffice it to say there are several triggers.

That said, I wasn’t shocked or surprised by anything but even though I knew where it was going I still enjoyed the ride.

It is the most perfect imperfect love story there ever was and will be. This book is about so much more than just a love story. It is about accepting oneself in any and all ways. It is about being able to unconditionally love a person not in spite of their flaws but because of their flaws. Nyla takes us on this journey of self-discovery for Dash and Kemper. There is no black and white with this book. It's very hard to pick a stance on what is right and what is wrong. Is Dash a good person or is ...more

OMG this book. It was incredible. It was so different to any other MM I've read and I just loved it. The characters were so complex and it just kept you guessing the whole time. Dash was just amazing, such an interesting, deep character who you couldn't help but love and Officer Kemper was just everything. His possessive, domineering ways were SO HOT. Speaking of hot.. the SEX SCENES. Holy mother of God, they were STEAMY STEAMY STEAMY. I'm no stranger to sex scenes and specifically MM but these ...more

The twist just...wasn't it for me. The book started off ok, I thought it had potential, but it just didn't hold up. I don't mind dark if it has a point and a purpose, but I just didn't really like the content or the character arc. Dash was a lot more interesting in the beginning than he was by the end. I like my dark and twisty to stay that way. The dialogue and writing style were enjoyable tho, I would definitely read this author again! Oh well, I'm glad others enjoyed it, I'm down to read new ...more

If I actually read a book, even if I’m mad at myself for being click-baited, I give it 2 stars. I thought it was both way too rape-y and ridiculous.

The things we do in the dark are one thing...but could we step out into the light? Together?

I am seriously at a loss how to start this review.
I expected dark. I got it.
I expected a mind fuck twist (because I’m not new to Nyla K and I know she likes to do that). And yep I got one.
I expected STEAMY scenes. I got that and more.

I’m still questioning everything because this left me in such a mindfucked state. A few things I called from the beginning so they didn’t surprise me when they became true bu

I’ll be back once I compose my thoughts to give my review!!! Effing Nyla I love you!!!!!!

Update - after I had a chance to process what I just read

If I could give Dash and Kemp all the stars, I would take a rocket to the moon and back to collect them all.

Nyla owned me last year with TBIBR and now she’s trying to own me again with Distorted. Well, mission accomplished, she most definitely succeeded.

This book has exceeded all my expectations, it blew me away. This author has phenomenal writing skills, the way she switches her writing style is kinda scary and how she manipulates her readers. I'm having a difficult time rating this book. I'm wavering between two or three stars. I enjoyed the writing style but the novel itself felt disjointed and a lot of the plot didn't make sense. The more I think about it the more annoyed I am. I also thought the author's note at the end was odd. I'm certain she's a lovely person but it felt aggressive and I don't appreciate when authors put down a sub-genre of the same genre they're writing in. It was off putting and it was also insulting. The author told us in the foreword not to write or read spoilers for this book, because it would ruin the fun. In the afterword she "is still yelling at us about it" (her words).

Here's the thing. If I wanted to take orders from random people or get yelled at about nothing I would have joined the army...

I was really mad about her calling it a dick move to spoil something. Hey Miss, if I want to read spoilers I will. If I want to write spoilers I will. If you don't like that, not my problem. Today

To put it politely, I'm fucking flabbergasted

I barely grazed the blurb because I wanted to expect the unexpected and knowing this author loves a good plot twist I also knew it was fruitless to guess. I'm glad I didn't because what I read blew my mind and completely took me by surprise.

So in the name of not spoiling a goddamn thing.. I'm going to be shady vague here.

Distorted is like nothing I've ever read before. Dark and brutal this world will not be for the faint hearted and honestly it's j

It's been days since I've finished this book, and I'm just absolutely GOBSMACKED. This is only the second book of Nyla's I've read, but she currently has one obsessed fan for life right here! (I'm a nice stalker, I promise!) I've seen her warnings of that mindfuck of a twist was coming, and lordy.. what a mindfuck it was. I have no words. None. I don't even know how/what I'm writing right now since the only thought I can share with all of you is to go read this book. It's unlike anything you've ...more
