Subbanna's father is highly respected scholar in royal court of Mysuru and he hopes his son also follow his footsteps. However, Subbanna likes music and the story goes through the conflict Subbanna faces thought his life.

ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ವೆಂಕಟೇಶ ಅಯ್ಯಂಗಾರರು ಕನ್ನಡದ ಒಬ್ಬ ಅಪ್ರತಿಮ ಲೇಖಕರು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ಎಂದೇ ಖ್ಯಾತರಾಗಿರುವ ಈ ಸಾಹಿತಿ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಎಂಬ ಕಾವ್ಯನಾಮದಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಿದರು. ಅನೇಕ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆದ ಮಾಸ್ತಿ 'ಸಣ್ಣ ಕಥೆಗಳ ಜನಕ' ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಅಪ್ರತಿಮ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಕೃಷಿಯಿಂದಾಗಿ 'ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಆಸ್ತಿ' ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಚಲಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಕೊಡಗಿನ ಕಡೆಯ ರಾಜ ಚಿಕವೀರ ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಬರೆದ 'ಚಿಕವೀರ ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರ' ಎಂಬ ಕೃತಿಗೆ ೧೯೮೩ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜ್ಞಾನಪೀಠ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಲಭಿಸಿತು.

सुब्बन्ना की लघु कथा जिसका जीवन त्रासदी से भरा हुआ था। मस्ती अयंगर ने कहानी को खूबसूरती से लिखा है। युवा से लेकर वृद्धावस्था तक नायक की वृद्धि और समाज में स्वयं के आदर्शों के साथ उसका मोहभंग इस उपन्यास का अधिकांश हिस्सा इस पुस्तक में दर्शाया गया है। बहुत समृद्ध कहानी है। मैंने सुना है कि इस किताब पर एक टीवी सीरियल या फिल्म भी है। मैं इस लेखक द्वारा लिखे गए चिकवेरा राजेंद्र को भी पढ़ना चाहता हूं, लेकिन दुख की बात यह है कि मैं उस किताब को नहीं खोज पाया। मेरी नजर उस किताब पर पिछले तीन-चार वर्षो से है।

ಮೈಸೂರು ಅರಸರ ಆಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಿಟೀಲು ವಾದಕರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಸುಬ್ಬಣ್ಣನವರು ಬೆಳೆದು ಬಂದ ಜೀವನ ಕತೆ. ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಿಣಿತಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದ ತಂದೆ ತನ್ನ ಮಗನು ಕೂಡ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರವನ್ನು ಕಲಿಯಲಿ ಎಂಬ ಆಸೆಗೆ ವಿರುದ್ಧವಾಗಿ ಸಂಗೀತಗಾರನದ ಸುಬ್ಬಣ್ಣ ಮುಂದೆ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯನ್ನು ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಮನೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬಂಗಾಳದ ಕಡೆ ಹೊರಟ. ಸಂಸಾರದ ಸುಖ ದುಖಃ ವನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಅನುಭವಿಸಿ, ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನೂ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಜೀವನದ ಮೂಲ ಉದ್ದೇಶದತ್ತ ಹೊರಡುವುದೇ ಮಾಸ್ತಿಯವರ ಸುಬ್ಬಣ್ಣನ ಕಥಾಹಂದರ.

Thanks to Jnanpith for publishing this Hindi translation of Kannada classic back from 1928!
Inspired from a true life incident, this story is about a Brahman boy whose lineage is Sanskrit scholars reciting verses in Mysore King's court.
But Subrahmanya (Subbanna) has his heart on music, which in that era was not considered very respectable due to its usage in houses of ill repute.
He has to break all ties with his family in Mysore in order to pursue music, and relocates to Kolkata.
This is the story of his struggles, family life, departures, selfless sacrifices and dedication to music.

Masti Venkatesa Iyengar is one of the stalwarts of Kannada literature. Subbanna is one of his earliest & quite famous works. This book captures the journey of Subbanna, a person who loves music more than Samskruta taught by his prodigal father. While establishing the early part of his life, the reason for addressing his wife in plural & further description of her name is quite enchanting. Though told as a story, some of the anecdotes are philosophical. “The motivation to boss over people is perhaps not found in sitting in front of them & enchanting with a divine song. One tends to forget that even Devarshi Naroda in Vaikunta, is an acclaimed singer himself.” Masti sure knows to emphasise a point subtly, yet to a great effect. Masti’s genius is on display in the same section where he effortlessly weaves a fantastic satire in the form of sarcasm.

The journey of Subbanna’s life along with its manifold ramifications across the wider family is an emotional rollercoaster ride. While on the physical level it could appear as a series of circumstances, at a metaphysical level, one can attribute this to a path towards total detachment from samsara. Lalitha’s character is one of great resolve, an amazing role model in an imperfect society. The experience of Subbanna can be attributed to the teachings of Gita (as alluded by author also), while yet another perspective could consider this as an interplay of karma repeating. Though it would be unfair to consider so, the ultimate goal of detachment simmers up to the surface. In yet another perspective, the story is reflection of transition of Jeevatma across the 4 stages of Varnaashrama, where the protagonist Subbanna goes through trials and travails to ultimate bliss.

The end of Subbanna is sublime, an aspiration for many. However, the true masterpiece is the last part of the story. To a perennial question of even modern times, Subbanna’s question is prophetic : “Is Bhairavi better or Shankarabharana better?”

The book covers the complete life events of subbana, starting from his birth👶 to his hapless death⚰️..

This book ends with tears in your eyes such an deep, immense and vivid life story of a person called subbana🙎‍♂️


Subbana's pure love and passion on playing violin(ಪಿಟೀಲು)🎻 drives this person crazy besides his parents warns to give up and earn some dime for living..

Then his parents thinks after marriage he may give up the his passion of playing violin and take some responsibility of house,

Guess what happens next???

Our hero(subbana) gets marriage this leads to more quarrels in house as Subbana doesn't gives up his passion.

First of all his patents were not happy with subbana and to cope up all her anger subbana's mother blames on his wife...

Then subbana with his wife leaves their home one night and then moves to north india
Subbana's life faces twist and turns like a rollercoaster which ends with agony and tears

It was fun reading an old-timey Kannada book from 1926. This one's a novella that follows the titular character Subbanna through adulthood, as he pursues meaning and purpose and fulfilment, discovering love, and passion, and growing along the way.

To readers used to the modern English way of authorial-intrusion-free writing, the several instances when it happens might appear jarring, but to me, it feels like a 'storyteller's story'. The author is telling the story, and there's no getting away from the fact that the author is a real person with real views. Some of the themes and views are outmoded for the audience of today, but the core of Subbanna's story, the way his life unfolds in his pursuit of meaning, is meaningful and eternal, as it's about the human condition.

एक छोटी पुस्तक, दर्शाती है कि इस छोटे से जीवनकाल में आपके जीवन में कितने परिवर्तन आ सकते हैं। कहानी का नायक सुबन्ना है जिसने अपने पारिवारिक कार्य से अलग संगीत का मार्ग चुना। इस कारण से उसके जीवन में जो भी घटित हुआ उसे जन्म से लेकर मृत्यु तक दर्शाया गया है। अपनों के छोड़ के चले जाने का दुःख क्या होता है। गृह क्लेश की छोटी छोटी बातें और प्रति पक्ष के विचार इसे आज भी प्रासंगिक बनाते हैं।

ಸುಬ್ಬಣ್ಣ ಎಂಬ ಒಬ್ಬ ಸಂಗೀತಗಾರನ ನಿಜವಾದ ಜೀವನ ಕಥೆಯೇ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ. ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ವೆಂಕಟೇಶ ಅಯ್ಯಂಗಾರ್ ಅವರು ಸುಬ್ಬಣ್ಣನ ಕೊನೆಯ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾದಾಗ ಅವರು ಹೇಳಿದ ಅಲ್ಪ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದು.

ಸುಬ್ಬಣ್ಣ ನಂತಹ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಇರುವುದು ಸಾಧ್ಯವೇ ಎಂದು ನಮಗೆ ಅನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನ ಅಮ್ಮ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯ ನಡುವಿನ ಕೋಲ್ಡ್ ವಾರ್ ಅವನನ್ನು ಹೆಂಡತಿ, ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಮನೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋಗುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಮುಂದೇನಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯಲು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಬೇಕು. ಕೇವಲ 100 ಪುಟಗಳ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ಅವರ ಶೈಲಿಯ ರುಚಿ ಹತ್ತಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
