Many of us dream of quitting our jobs, hopping on a plane, and escaping our daily reality to frolic around on a beach for a while. But for most of us, it’s just a dream - until now. How to Quit Your Job & Travel is a practical, step-by-step guide to one of the most exciting, exhilarating, and terrifying things you’ll ever do. You’ll learn how to tackle each of the challenges preventing you from taking off on a long-term trip, from finances to fear to returning to reality - and all the nitty-gritty logistics along the way. But once you do actually pack your bags, throw your stuff into storage, and head off - what’s next? Lia Garcia, co-founder and CEO of one of the most-read travel blogs in the world, spills all the things nobody tells you about the reality of long term travel - and coming home again - with stories from her own disastrous year-long honeymoon. This book is divided into four
In each part of the book, you’ll find specific, actionable advice interwoven with stories and mishaps from the author's year-long honeymoon. At the end of the book is a reference section containing all of the websites, apps, businesses, academic studies, spreadsheet templates, and tools mentioned or recommended, as well as tables organizing specific information you’ll need as you plan your trip. You'll also recieve acces to a digital and printable version of the “Reference” section.
Lia Garcia is the CEO and co-founder of Practical Wanderlust, one of the most popular travel blogs in the world. Through her blog and podcast, she helps millions of travelers each year embark on life-changing travel experiences. Her travel advice and writing has been featured in Forbes, Lonely Planet, The Washington Post, Travel + Leisure, Vice, Fodor's, and more. Lia knows her stuff. From the sheer amount of information presented in this book, you can tell she's not only extremely well traveled but that she also took the time to do her research, including what it means to travel ethically and responsibly. It's no surprise to her dedicated readers, but this book is in no way, shape or form dry; Lia keeps it, light, witty, and most importantly, funny and entertaining! I found myself smiling and laughing out loud many times while reading this, and really felt I got to know her as a person.
The book is divided up in a logical way, and she really walks you through turning your dream into long-term travel into reality. As the title suggests, this is PRACTICAL information: not air-headed advice that will never take you past the dreaming stage. She tells you how to plan, budget, and most excitingly, travel on a budget! There are plenty of personal anecdotes which helps you imagine how she puts these principles into action. If you've dreamt of traveling long term, this is an excellent resource to help you plan and work towards your goal. Highly recommended!
I had the privilege of reading an advanced reviewing copy of this book, and I simply love it. Lia Garcia (of Practical Wanderlust) breaks down everything you need to know and do to leave behind your 9 - 5 and travel.
And this book isn't just for people who want to leave their jobs permanently; it would be perfect for anyone who might want to take a leave of absence from their career or just take a few months to explore the world before returning to work.
I love that Lia doesn't pull any punches. She gets pretty real about what it's actually like to walk away from a job to travel, the ups and downs, the criticism from friends and family, the doubts, the fears, and (probably most importantly) what it's like when you return and you realize you've changed more than anyone realizes.
It's thoroughly researched and chock FULL of practical advice for how to execute every stage of the planning process along with great (and often hilarious) stories from Lia's own travels.
I had the privilege of reading an advanced copy of How To Quit Your Job & Travel. If you have ever had an interest in long-term travel or just like to read about other people's adventures, I highly recommend picking up a copy. Lia is hilarious, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading all about their mishaps on their year-long honeymoon, but it's also chock-full of helpful and practical advice. She breaks the book down into four parts: The Dream, The Plan, The Trip, and the Return. As a Dreamer and someone who hopes to travel long-term in the future, her details were so beneficial. Lia's honesty about the good (and the bad) was refreshing since I often feel like travel bloggers have the "perfect" life. I especially appreciated the section Lia included on Ethical and Responsible travel since this is something I strive for in all of my adventures. This is a great book for dreamers, planners, and lovers of travel, and it will have you learning and laughing the entire time.
Pretty much as soon as Lia announced that she was writing a book, I knew I was going to read it.
This book is part travel guide part memoir and I love it. Her voice comes through so well that it is like reading an ultra-long post on her blog! I love that because you always worry that a book just isn't going to sound like a person but this really does.
I found the tips included to be practical and helpful. I even went ahead and marked some to use for money saving and travel planning.
This is a must-have when thinking about the practicalities of long term travel, travel planning, or just if you already like Lia's blog!
I was lucky enough to be part of Lia’s advance review team. This book was so much fun to read. Practical advice on how to get ready for long term travel, including so many things that you would never think about on your own. Plus you get to hear stories from Lia (and learn from her hilarious mistakes)! I would highly recommend this book if you love travel and want to take a gap year (or even a gap month).
I won a copy of this book in a giveaway, and it was right up my alley. The book is a comprehensive guide to managing long-term travel (preparation, logistics, the actual travel, and re-entry). I’m going to hang on to it as a reference for our early retirement adventures. While I’m not planning to quit my job anytime soon, when we go back to the office after COVID, I may just keep this book on my desk to keep ‘em guessing. ;-)
