Erryn's world #2

An Unbound Soul: Part 1: Law

Rate this book
There was a mistake. An error. No king ordered his summoning to battle a demon lord. No god sent him to save the world from destruction. In fact, the closest thing this world had to a god would have been very upset at his presence, had she noticed. Fortunately for him, by the time she noticed it was too late to interfere. A soul had fallen into the world that did not belong there. A soul not bound by the Law of the world. A soul that was free.

When Peter suffers a too-close encounter with a truck, he finds himself reborn in another world. At first glance it is a perfect fantasy land. There's magic to play with, elves singing in the forest and a hyperactive catgirl neighbour. There's even a System that lets him earn skills and level up. But it isn't long before he notices that the world is far too perfect. Just why is everyone so nice? Can Peter accept the alien morality of this worlds self-proclaimed protector, or will he seek to overthrow her?

The second volume set in Erryn’s world, and the first in the continuing tale of Peter’s adventure.

I need more!

A couple of years ago, I was out of things to read in my genre, even with kindle unlimited. I had recently finished the first book of The Wandering Inn, and I had the same feeling after finishing that as I did with An Unbound Soul.

I wanted - no, I *needed* - more.

So I took the plunge and read my very first webnovel: The Wandering In, of course. That binge read was epic, both in terms of how much I enjoyed it and in sheer length. And that led me down a path I swore I would never tread: reading webnovels. See, I’d always assumed that I would be left in a constant state of wanting more, as I read incredibly fast, and I was also concerned about quality. While I was right, on both counts, there are enough out there that the quantity ensures there’s always something new to read, as well as a certain availability of webnovels of a higher quality (in terms of both editing and storytelling; you can be the best storyteller in the world, but if your stories are illegible then they still won’t be any good to read, after all).

Fast forward to a couple years later, and there I was, once again out of things to read on both kindle unlimited and my personal cache of webnovels over at wuxiaworld.com. So I once again fired up the kindle and expanded my browsing to the amazon recommendations that seemed good enough or interesting enough to purchase.

And I discovered something wonderful as a result.

See, I’m a huge fan of dungeon core and litrpg in general - at least, litrpg that doesn’t include erotic harems anyway. And when amazon recommended the previous novel in this series, “A Lonely Dungeon”, I was intrigued. It was a dungeon core novel that had none of the tropes of the genre that I’ve been led to expect. So I delved (ha!) a little deeper and discovered that it was available on Royal Road for the brilliant price of “free”!

So I settled down and read the whole thing in one sitting and was left a little at a loss. The book was amazing, there’s no denying that. But it proved my fears once again - I needed more. More! And I needed it *right the hell NOW.*

Luckily, the author had already started writing a sequel, which is the book I’m currently writing this glowing review of. But once again, I NEEDED MORE. Immediately, if not sooner.

So I bought the book here on kindle, as it was a few chapters ahead of what’s been published free on royal road (at the time of this review, anyway; that’s likely to change within a week, though).

An Unbound Soul tells the story of Peter, a transmigration from earth who landed in the world built and established so wonderfully in A Lonely Dungeon. This book covers his first seven years of life, from being a frustrated baby who’s got the memories of his adult self from earth, up to the point where “interesting” things start happening.

Peter is an interesting protagonist, and I particularly enjoyed the feeling of seeing the world as a passenger inside his head. It drew me in and made me feel close to him, almost like I was sharing his journey and discoveries. But his characterization isn’t unique in the least. The side characters are also incredibly well-developed; especially by the standards of indie webnovels.

From the exuberant neighbor catgirl with the energy of ten normal small children combined, to the magic-obsessed earth mage, to the mother and father of the protagonist, and even down to the characters who only get a brief mention (I see you, Cliff the Immortal Butler), no character comes across as one-dimensional. And that’s an achievement I’ve not seen since I read TWI.

As for the story itself, it does move along at something of a glacial pace. This book probably shouldn’t have been cut where it was and published yet. Instead, it should’ve included about four times as much as it does, in order to offset that glacial slice-of-life pace. Stories *need* conflict and antagonists in order to grab and keep the attention of readers. The only thing that keeps that lack from being a bigger issue than it is, is the short length of the book.

Otherwise, it would only merit four stars. And the length itself would have had me rating it at that, except I fell in love with it as it stands.

My one-sentence impression of this book: An Unbound Soul makes me glad that covid-19 happened, otherwise this author would never have put pen to paper.

Excellent Read

I am quite happy to have stumbbled onto this story. It provides a slightly new take into the isekai / litrpg genre. Our main character is some how reborn in a new world, and due to being a transdental migrator earns a trait, abnormal soul, being that his soul is different than the natives of this world. This means he is resistant if not outright immune to soul magic which is an important plot point to this story. You will have to read it for yourself in order to truly understand why.

Unbound soul follows the cliche of most isekai stories to inlude the protagnist being killed by a truck leading to his reincarnation. One instance that this breaks from the regular mold is that he doesnt immediately understand the language and has to learn it the old fasshioned way, and to make this even more interesting was that the author was imaginitive enough to write the language out as they were speaking instead if just saying "they spoke a different language I didnt understand" or some such. You also got to get a glimpse as to how the MC worked out the language, mainly being that he listned to key words and used context to figure out the rest. The author was also kind enough to translate what was said in the afterword at the end of the book and explained that the language of this world is a cipher. I very much enjoy such explanations from authors as I find it interesting and gives me an idea of where they came up with ideas.

Aside from that the description of the story is pretty accurate and does not really need a summation from me. I enjoyed the premise, progression and worldbuilding as well as the characters. Not much character development as of yet but this seems to be more of an introduction and foudation leveling book to the real story which should progress from here.

I am looking forward to reading the next installment and would reccomend this story to fans of light litrpg and isekai (transmigration/reincarnation/ other world) stories.

At the time I purchased this there were no reviews and I am not certain why. This really was a decent story and should be given a chance. Hopefully this story gets the validation it deserves and others begin to read it so that I can talk to them about it. Maybe I will "subtly" hint that my friends and family read it. Maybe leaving it out where they cant miss it, like on their keyboard, on their pillow, left out by the toilet, in their driver seat or perhaps I should "accidently" slap them across the face with it... I personally like the latter.

The Lonely Dungeon, Erryn, Has Resurrected A Dead World!

A bit over three centuries after Erryn resurrects the intelligent races of a long dead world; under the aegis of "The System" built by the last surviving Humans, Dwarves, Elves, and Demons; an inter dimensional error throws a wrench into her plans. A human soul from from another reality is reincarnated in her world -- a soul not bound by The System's Law.

This isn't actually a sequel the Cath fach's _A Lonely Dungeon_, though it is possible to view it as such. There is a large gulf of time between the end of _A Lonely Dungeon_ and the beginning of this book. Probably more than a millennium, during which time Erryn rebuilt the ecology of the world to the point that the Humans, Beastkin, Elves, Dwarves, Demons, and other intelligent races can survive in it. To the point that the stories of the peoples of this resurrected world can be told. In this book, Erryn is a bit player and the people take center stage.

Those who like the LitRPG and Fantasy genres and those who enjoy RPGs will likely enjoy this book.

fun

Peter is born into a land of Magic with memories of another world. Fearing that this will make him a target, he tries his best to blend in but quickly stands out. Quickly outgrowing his class and leaning Magic, he finds he stands out but is accepted. Then the monsters come and he knows it’s for him.
It’s a great fast paced read that tells what happened after the dungeon core Erryn saved the world. It is entertaining and well written. The Magic system meshs and builds well. In all a great read.

How book one ended, I thought that would be the end. I will hesitantly give this a go, and see if I can continue the series. It's super short.

This turned out interesting. I was wondering how the author was going to make this work with their way of telling a story.

I read a few other stories of someone being reborn, and following them as they age.

I will pick up the sequel.

Good

I think it is a good book that is doing something different. I thought it needed to push the concept a little further, but it also feels like he is setting up for the next book.

Ok, but not much happening

The book shows some promise but not much is happening and it gets a bit boring. Worese is that it ends before even hinting at something interesting happening in the future.

Kinda boring but also novel story. It’s boring because there is no driving reasons the mc (Peter) has to get strong. No enemies, no childhood trauma, nothing. It’s novel because of the reason for that which is the Law that basically disables bad thoughts.

Exciting followup

The end of the first book made me a little nervous about where the author could go from here, but it exceeded my expectations by a lot. Would highly recommend.

Originality

I loved the first book because of the surprisingly originality. This second book surpassed expectations. Can hardly wait for the next!

Not bad, not bad at all!

The story is pretty well visualized, not bad buy it if you enjoyed the previous book.

Besides being short, you won't hate the purchase.
