Hello World Baby Animals by Jill McDonald is a great book for introduction to animals and names used for “baby animals”. I once read that we are doing our children a disservice by calling young animals “baby”. For example, a “baby” elephant is a “calf”. To each his own, but I can’t call them by their proper names unless I learn them too. I love these books because I feel like I am teaching my children, but I am also learning too.
Fletcher’s favorite part was the lions because “Lions are mean” 🙃
Baby Animals is one of those rare nonfiction informational board books. In this book, the young reader will get introduced to facts about baby otters, orangutans, seahorses. giraffes, opossums, lions, frogs, swans, elephants and penguins. Even adults will enjoy the information shared in this board book. All the animals are well illustrated, and some new words are also introduced.
I liked the opening page with human babies and closing page with a review of all the animal parent / babies. I learned some new facts about animals, and I appreciated the inclusion of a few animals that are rarely seen in children's books: otter, orangutan, seahorse, opossum, swan.
This series (Hello, World) is just fantastic. I've got 10-12 of them, I think, and only about half of them are ever on the shelf. Caregivers can read just the short text or read the longer text.
