My darling girl, I watch you playing outside in the grass. Your long blonde hair sweeps back and your blue eyes are bright with joy. You are utterly perfect, I never imagined something could be so wrong and I’d be powerless to protect you…

Ava’s daughter Carly is everything a ten-year-old should be: energetic, creative and the light of her parents’ lives. But when she starts stumbling down stairs and walking into doors, Ava wants to rush to the doctor. Her husband Rick is sure she’s fretting over nothing – kids can be a little clumsy sometimes. But Ava’s instinct is telling her something is seriously wrong.

Against Rick’s advice, Ava takes Carly to see a specialist and is given a devastating diagnosis: a rare genetic condition that will change her future forever. When Rick realises the truth, he is determined to do all he can to help Carly enjoy what light she has left. The close-knit family take it one day at a time, walking to the beach and watching the sunrise.

Just as Ava begins to imagine a new future for them all, a tragic accident throws their lives into chaos once more. To give her daughter a chance at a full life, Ava faces a devastating choice. How can she possibly choose between the two people she loves most?

An emotional, heartbreaking page-turner about a mother’s love and an utterly devastating decision. Readers of Kate Hewitt, My Sister’s Keeper and Diane Chamberlain will keep this story in their hearts forever.

"Get ready to be blown away by Alison Ragsdale's Her Last Chance. It is the story of a mother's love, a wife's devotion, and the bond that ties a family together. Set in the highlands of Scotland, it strikes a sharp contrast between the tranquil beauty of life and the heartbreak of a decision no one ever wants to make. This is one of those books that will remain in your thoughts for a good long time." - Bette Lee Crosby, USA Today Bestselling Author

Call it the natural instinct of a caring mother, but Ava knows something is wrong with her daughter Carly. Her husband Rick is a wonderful husband and father, but he thinks Carly will be just fine. Nonetheless, Ava takes Carly to be evaluated and soon sees a specialist. Ava discovers that Carly has a degenerative diseases that will eventually cost Carly her sight.

Stunned by this devastating news, and truly saddened that Carly might never see the fulfillment of what just might be a promising career as an artist, Ava and Rick make plans to do some traveling to give Carly an opportunity to see as much of the world as possible before her world goes completely dark. Just as the family is beginning their adventure, a terrible accident occurs and Ava is torn, now providing for Carly's needs as her vision grows dimmer and dimmer is at war with something equally critical. What road will Ava take?

In this compelling read by Alison Ragsdale, love, emotion, tragedy and sacrifice all play critical roles. This sensitive story shows love at its deepest, making this a heartbreaking read. However, there is a thread of hope that shines through, especially when it comes to the hearts of the characters in this touching story. I was completely in awe of this wonderful story. As a wife, mother and grandmother, I could not help but put myself in Ava's place as I read this book. I applaud the author for writing such a fabulous read and now cannot wait to read more from her in the future.

Many thanks to NetGalley and to Bookouture for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Alison Ragsdale is going to give Jodi Picoult a run for the money with these books that dig so deep into the real grit of life, and leave you weeping, tugging at your heartstrings and parts of your soul you didn’t realize you had!

Her novels are always smart family stories with complex drama that you can tell is extensively researched! This story knocked it out of the park for me.

“Her Last Chance” had me begging to comfort the characters from their razor-sharp anguish that had me crying out.

I even paused to wonder if it was me that needed comforting.

Don’t get me wrong, this story isn’t all sadness. But, those were the parts that compelled me to keep reading. I needed relief, if there was any!

To elevate our deeply-seated emotions to this level takes sheer talent. I imagine the profound suffering Alison Ragsdale’s pen must sense after some scenes are written, let alone Alison herself. I thank her for this gift.

Alison always gets it right! Her storytelling is superb! Gold-Star!

I dare anyone to read this and not be fully absorbed! Invested! Mind, Body & Soul!

To me, there is nothing better than reading a book with my whole heart. Her Last Chance is a beautifully-written book that reached every crevice of my heart, infused with warmth and the deep love between a wife and husband, and a daughter and her parents. When the family in this book receives devastating, life-altering news, they must rely on their devotion to each other to get them through the darkness and the pain. Ava, Rick, and Carly felt like my own family; I laughed with them, I rejoiced with them, I cried with them, I shared their grief and their hope. Such tender care is given to this family by the author; even in their despair, there was never any doubt that love would sustain them.

Emotional and thought provoking read.

Alison Ragsdale has been on my list for quite a while, as I have been wanting to read several of her books. Her Last Chance is my first read by the author, and I’m very impressed with the writing, detail, and the story.
This book will resonate with anyone who has had to deal with heartbreak and trauma in their personal lives, especially the unfairness of it all. This book also deals with decisions that need to be made, and the changes that one must make in their life to accommodate those decisions.
I recommend reading Her Last Chance, as it gave me the opportunity to learn about Stargardt’s disease (which I never heard of until I read this book), and also because Alison Ragsdale is an excellent writer and I am looking forward to future reads from her.

When Ava and Rick bring their daughter, Carly, in to see a specialist, they receive some devastating news. Carly has a rare genetic disorder that will alter the course of her life. Both Ava and Rick feel like the bottom has dropped as one or both of them may have the gene that Carly now has. This is a terrible blow for any parent to know that they may be the cause of their child’s rare disorder. I can only imagine the heart ache and torment any parent would go through and we see that in both Ava and Rick. But, this is not the only blow that this family will go through. A tragic accident changes all of their lives leaving Ava facing a very difficult decision.

I don’t really want to say too much of what is going on in this story as it is better to go in blind. But, you will feel the emotions pouring off the pages ten fold. This is a heartbreaking and really sad story revolving around a family that has to make some deeply devastating choices. Ava might be an emotional mess, but her family always comes first, but how does one make the hardest decisions of their life? This is really a running question throughout the story and really makes you wonder what you would do if faced with the same situation.

This is not an easy read by any means and you may need a box of tissues handy as this story will make you cry. Alison Ragsdale hits on every emotion with her incredible dialogue endearing you to each of the characters in the story. The story is told with suich honesty that it makes this story seem so real. While this is a sad story there are also uplifting parts as the family try their best to hold themselves together to get through their pain which brings them even closer together.

If you love emotional, heartfelt stories that will make you cry then you do not want to miss Alison Ragsdale’s latest book, Her Last Chance.

First, I want to thank Alison Ragsdale, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

WOW!! Alison Ragsdale’s Her Last Chance is a beautifully written book that utterly moved me to ugly cry! It is just one of those powerfully emotional books that will stay in your heart long after. It is a definite add to anyone’s tbr list.

Alison gave her characters some pretty big challenges, obstacles and hurdles. In doing so she did an incredible job educating her readers about these challenges and solutions. These characters were so strong and if put into their shoes not sure how I would have coped.

Many times I yelled and screamed at my Kindle at the shocking moments that left you breathless. Alison can sure write those scenes with a lot of detail and heart!

I will say thanks to Alison I will never be able to open a can of soup again.

Alison’s book might make you reflect on your own life. At least it did for me.

Wow. Just wow.

This is Alison Ragsdale's best writing masterpiece yet. I actually can't quite comprehend the amount of research, and the amount of love that has been put into this stunning novel.

The relationship portrayed by Alison's words between Rick, Ava and Carly is nothing short of beautiful. I fell in love with this family, on their road of heartbreak and love.

Not only this, seeing the bond between Ava and Carly blossom while going through their struggles is so heartwarming, because Ava grew as a mother and Carly became this wise beyond her years young lady.

I smiled, I laughed, I cried and then I smiled some more. My eyes are puffy, my nose is running, which to me shows just how amazing this book really is!

And....bring the box of tissues. Heartbreaking and a page turner. Again Ms Ragdale does it. Her books go straight for the heart. As a mom myself, my number one job was taking care of my children. Ava had a 10 year old to take care of, Carly, and then finds out that she has a rare genetic disease.

But thats not the only burden she has to bear. How much can one woman take? A tragic accident adds to her troubles and she must make a choice. This book hits you in the heart and is an emotional rollercoaster for sure. One of the best I have read from this author.

OMG this book. It's so good.

This book is so good.
You do not want to miss it.
Emotional and heartbreaking.
Family.

This is the saddest book I have read this year. The saddest I have read in a while. It's such a heartfelt story of love, loss, and family. A lot of what ifs. What would you do if you was faced with an impossible choice? What would you do to save your child's eyesight? Or possibly the love of your life's, life? Could you ever let go of either? Your child or your soulmate?

Ava, Carly and Rick are a family. A family who love each other do deeply and completely that when things do go wrong it's devastating and unreal. More than they can face at times. When Ava and Rick have to face that their daughter's life is changing there is nothing they can do to stop it they pull together and try to make things better. Try to make memories that will last her a lifetime. But in doing so the unimaginable happens. Things take a turn that they were never expecting.

This book is told with such pure love and feeling. So powerful and honest. I do not see how this author wrote this without weeping her heart out. It has been one of the hardest books I have ever read yet one of the best also. What happens to this family is so unfair yet so realistic and heartfelt that you will not be able to stop reading. Even through all the tears that have flown down my face I kept on reading. I did have to take a break a few times so I could see the words. I felt Ava's pain and fears. It was so real. So honest. Like you are living it. Seeing it each day. Each page. This book is just so good and so sad. So emotional and so honestly heartbreaking. So full of true love. A family that has to go through the worse time ever.

Thank you to #NetGalley, #AlisonRagsdale, #Bookouture for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this book.

5/5 stars and a million more. I recommend this one and please have lots of tissues handy when you read it. I promise if you are human you will need them.

My first book by this author and it won’t certainly not be my last one.

From the very beginning she captured my attention by the way she makes the emotions stream out of the pages. Whether she is talking about sadness, happiness, love, friendship, no matter which feeling she is describing, you can feel it deep in your heart.

You find the love of your life. You start a family and it all is like a dream come true. Unfortunately life is not only gifting you nice things. Sometimes it seems like it really really hates you.

Together as a family you are strong and you know you will climb out of this valley. The future is not quite laughing but definitely smiling at you again, but that’s a good thing, isn’t it? From now on the only way seems to be up…

This was a very beautiful story. The author must have spend quite some time doing research and I always applaud that. It makes the story so much more come to life.

What struck me was the maturity of Carly for such a young girl. The way she handled everything was almost otherworldly. I don’t think I would be able to handle it like she did. 5 stars

Thank you, Alison Ragsdale and Bookouture

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Her Last Chance' by Alison Ragsdale.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Alison Ragsdale, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 13th April 2020.

This is the first book I have read by this author.

I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis. It also stated in the synopsis 'Readers of Kate Hewitt, My Sister’s Keeper and Diane Chamberlain will keep this story in their hearts forever'.
I am a fan of Kate and Diane's books and LOVED 'My Sister's Keeper' so am looking forward to see if it loves up to this. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue, 31 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in a fictional town based in Scotland, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture.

This book is written in third person perspective and the protagonist is Ava. The benefits of third person perspective are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

It is set over multiple timelines via flashbacks When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture.

'Her Last Chance' discusses some topics that may trigger some readers. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Alison discusses children's health, car accident, coma, end of life care and more.

Well ladies and gents if you are looking for a tear jerker you have come to the right place!!! This book has been beautifully written and it completely drew me in with its vivid descriptions. The storyline and synopsis worked perfect for this book.

The storyline is stunningly devastating and it had me on the edge of my seat throughout. The cover states that this book is 'Utterly heartbreaking, gripping and emotional' and I couldn't agree more!!! It is such a powerful storyline that will stay with me for a long time. It was filled with love, heartbreak, friendship and loss and I was completely absorbed throughout. If you have ever read 'P. S I love you', 'Me before you' or 'My Sisters keeper' and enjoyed them then this book is definitely for you!! I love the fact that Alison focused on Stargardt disease and the fact that she most definitely did her research shines through!!! I have never heard of this before and I'm sure many others haven't either so it is great that she is bringing such awareness whole weaving it into such a beautiful storyline, that takes talent.

The characters were well defined, realistic and strong. I cannot even begin to imagine the pain and suffering that Ava was going through, especially as a Mum myself, such a strong and passionate woman. However it wasn't just Ava that was string but also Carly who had all that to go through whilst being just a child. Ava, Carly and Rik are a perfect family unit and to watch them go through all that was absolutely heart wrenching. However where there was dark the light shone through and I was very glad of Cam and Jenna's friendship to them both and the support they both gave while having their own problems to deal with.

This book absolutely grabbed my heart and mind and didn't let go while bringing tears to my eyes and I do not cry easily unless it comes to animals. So do make sure you have tissues at the ready!!
Although this book brought me to tears I also think that it ended perfectly and would absolutely love to see this made into a film!!! Alison welcome aboard the favourite author train, I just need to make a stop at amazon to add all your books to my wishlist!!!

Overall a devastatingly, heartbreaking and yet beautiful story that will leave you in tears.

Genres covered in this novel include Literary Fiction and Fiction amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of of 'P. S I love you', 'Me before you' or 'My Sisters keeper' or just anyone who is looking for a beautiful tear jerker.

311 pages.

This book is just 99p to purchase on kindle via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

Ava and Rick are devasted about their only child, Carly’s, diagnosis. Reimagining their future and determined to give their daughter a memorable gift that she can carry through her life, they make plans to embark on a journey of a lifetime. But life throws another curve ball. A soul-searing, satisfying read, one that will have you reaching for the tissues one minute, and smiling the next.

This is a true tear-jerker. If you enjoy books that tug at all the heartstrings and give you all the feels, you definitely must read this book!

It has all of the hallmarks of Alison Ragsdale’s excellent writing; memorable characters, heart-warming with emotional ups and downs, and the majesty of her Scottish settings.

If you enjoy a good cry in these times when we all need a safe release, then this book is indeed heart-breaking and almost guaranteed to get you there. Have the tissues ready!

Her Last Chance deals with the pain and inadequacy of feeling powerless as you watch your child lose her sight to disease, and is also a true example of a heroine facing the very worst -and finding she still has the strength to carry on and find hope.

Ragsdale’s love for her characters jumps off every page as a family is torn apart. A heartbreaking yet hopeful tale of how deep a mother’s love and strength can run.

This is one of the best book I have read in years. Each page is to be savored by this master storyteller Alison Ragsdale. She knows how to draw her readers in right from the very first page and this book of hers is no exception. The novel is set in beautiful Scotland and one will enjoy the beautiful landscape and towns as the story unfolds. The main characters Ava, Carly and Rick have been portrayed very well and one feels as though they know them closely. Being a mother and a wife myself my heart went out both for Ava and her daughter Carly. I was in awe of the strength they showed throughout their roller coaster journey and cried several times along with them. I was rooting for this family all along and kept hoping for the best. The Stargardt condition which Carly suffered from has been researched very well and I came out much educated. This book will leave readers thinking, to enjoy life each day to the fullest and to not take their loved ones for granted and create wonderful memories with them.
Thank you Alison for sharing your wonderful book with me on Linda’s Book Obsession FB page. This book will remain with me for years to come. You have outdone yourself and I can’t wait to read your next book.

Her Last Chance by Alison Ragsdale is an emotionally charged journey that will tug at your heartstrings from the word go. Ms Ragsdale has created empathetic characters that will stay with you long after the final page has been turned.

Ava and her husband Rick adore their ten year old daughter Carly, and dote on their only child. But when Carly begins to stumble, and fails to see what is right in front of her, Ava knows immediately that something is very wrong with her beautiful child. A devastating diagnosis is quickly followed by a tragic accident, and Ava must find a way to move forward in strength when her whole world is shattered in the blink of eye.

This is a heartwrenching read that will keep you in an emotional stranglehold as you bear witmess to a family's unfathomable pain.

Oh my goodness I think this is the first book I’ve ever read that has actually made me cry. What a heart breaking, emotional but a beautiful read. This book is so beautifully written it’s incredible.

Ava, Rick and Carlys life seems to go from perfect to tragic over night. As one tragedy after another is thrown at Ava and her family it makes you think how much bad luck can one family have thrown at them. Ava struggles as she is forced into a horrible decision to choose between her husband and her daughter the two people she loves the most. I won’t say any more as I don’t want to spoil such a beautifully and well written book.

A brilliant and heart breaking read for anyone that’s looking for a good good id definitely recommend this one.

This book will make you think about your life, and have you bawling or smiling at times too.
This is the story of Ava, Rick & Carly, and how they deal with a devastating diagnosis, then an accident on top of that.
As always, I love the vivid descriptions that this author gives, it really makes you picture the places and people she is writing about. Alison Ragsdale is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite authors.

Warning: Do Not Read Without Tissue

Tears could be a problem during the reading of Her Last Chance. However, somehow the writer will league you feeling hopeful. While the story is told from Ava's point of view, it is her daughter Carly who takes over the focus. Her, courage, attitude, and stoicism will make you want to wrap her in your arms so she can share her determination with you. How do you watch your child suffer? How do you hold your breath while your husband fights for his life.

OMG, this broke my heart completely. It was so emotional where the mother had to choose between two people she loved to save one of them. The author managed to pack a bucketload of emotions, my heart seemed to wrench apart. I loved how everything was dealt with sensitively, but it was still a heartbreaking story.

I was very disappointed and sorry to have bought this book based on the description.

I expected the story to center around Carly and her potential blindness. Instead it was mostly about her mother, Ava and not all that interesting.
