Whether or not you are a Seventh-day Adventist, you will find this book a good read! A survey of the history of the church's understanding of Grace, in the second half of the book Stu Tyner takes an open and honest look at the journey of grace in his own church - founded by people who struggled to find the relationship between law and grace, who drifted for the most part into a very legalistic view of salvation, and who are now rediscovering God's truly amazing grace!

The Adventist Church stands at a crossroads as it decides what and who it is and will be. There are those who would return this wonderful group of people to the legalism of the 1950s and those who are working to lead it forward into a life of Grace. Stuart Tyner is a voice which will hopefully be heard as they make very important choices!

An uneven book that needs better editing. Written for Seventh-day Adventists (SDA), it surveys Christian history and theology as the Church struggles to come to grips with grace before turning to the SDA denomination's internal tensions over grace. Somewhat disjointed but does provide additional material at the end of each chapter for further thinking. The first half of the book might interest the general reader but the second half will probably only be of interest to those interested in SDA history. The second half of the book makes it clear that every SDA should read it, particularly if they have been seduced by a legalistic religiosity.

Tuner has done a great job in exploring the historical basis of the Christian journey in adopting the doctrine of God's saving Grace. It is His grace alone that saves us. That exploration includes the journey the SDA church has had in this doctrine. And like all other tribes, we struggle mightily with the concept. This book is a must read for Adventist Christians.

Mr. Tyner gives a historical review of the theology of grace through church history. It helped my understanding and belief in the free gift that God offers us.



Just a word of caution: this book covers a lot of history. So if you don't find history compelling, you might not appreciate this book.
