King again brings readers along on an adventure to save part of the world. This time Leah and Gustavo travel to North Carolina to protect Venus Flytraps from poachers. Using their knowledge and the equipment the Beagle provides, they track the poachers and prevent them from leaving until the police arrive. Plenty of action with informative text woven through the story. Don't miss the facts and glossary provided at the end of the book. This series encourages readers to learn more about a wide variety of STEM areas and find their own interest areas.

This series has a lot to love - the teamwork and the sweet kids, a quiz at the end of the book, a glossary and science terms, plus a hidden picture to find throughout the book. The last two in the series have not been up to par. This one was so completely illogical and silly (a door is banged off it’s hinges, the kids escape from a wild bear, climbing trees and scaring a group of poachers). Plus one of the highlights, finding the hidden picture, has been numbered incorrectly in the last two books. It’s a bummer, but I don’t plan to read any more aloud.

My eight year old and I love the Secret Explorers series! The Plant Poachers is another wonderful installment in this adventure-packed series. A perfect read aloud and partner read for elementary kids wanting to tackle some thicker chapter books. My son loved learning about the Venus Fly Trap and that the kids thwarted the poachers! We can't wait for the next one!

This book has some fun science info, but I'm not a huge fan of kids going after poachers on their own, even when suspending disbelief. This one also over simplified some science to the point of confusion for my kids. A fine early reader, though.
