His first task was to survive. Now Jace must save the only people he's ever cared for.
Back in his old life, Jace was a loner. He didn't need friends or community, and judging by his romantic failures, he didn't need a girlfriend either. Or more accurately, any girlfriends he managed to attract quickly found they didn't need him. But now, everything has changed.
Yanked from that old life and shoved into a harsh world governed by game rules, Jace has built the first true home he's ever known. Ironstead, a settlement on an outcrop overlooking a savage coast, is a refuge in a dangerous land. The villagers call him their leader. Mackenzie, the woman of his dreams, calls him whatever she pleases because there's no arguing with her spunky smile or quick temper. And Jace is pleased to look around the nightly campfires and realize he can call these people 'friends.'
But like a dark tide seeping up through beach cobbles, evil magic is slowly flooding the region. Barricaded n the region's stronghold, a fortress called Graymist Hold, a crazed and power-hungry woman summons the darkness. The region is doomed unless Jace and his friends can figure out a way to stop her.
About 40% through the book you see it going south in a pretty strong way and you can just feel that only in the list 4% of the book will the situation reverse. I was too stubborn to just put it down.
So I enjoyed the book but I just don't think it was as good as some of the previous works by this author. The story seem to drag a bit and didn't Nearly as much discovery Newness. Although it was good to get some insight into The Players condition. the rest of the story didn't move the bar too far with respect to the player levels abilities and the city/empire. Hopefully the next book will have a bit more grind in the uplift as well that is some More discovery as well as more back history.
This LitRPG series where our heroes found themselves in game without their consent just keeps getting more thrilling as in this book they are facing Mistress Avant, a powerful necromancer who was out to gain as much power as possible by raising an army of zombies. Our group split up with Jace, River and Hesh travelling to Graymist Hold in search of Avant. She was turning beasts into winter touched monsters and she had to be stopped. Whilst the group led by Mackenzie, Seth and some NPC's travelled in search of the shrine of Veia to Haverton, in order to resurrect Griztwee who had been accidentally killed by Jace. Both groups encounter problems they had never envisaged so that their quests seemed to be over before they even started. Jace spent the rest of the tale as an undead zombie, whilst Mac and Seth were turned into miniatures of themselves. However they gained support and help from others they came across on the way and the battle was full on. Hearing the bombshell the people of Haverton dropped on them, that they would never be able to return to earth, really forced them to the realisation that this was their life from hereon and that they had best put all their might into overcoming threats and difficulties and taking on quests to level up as fast as possible as they still had to tackle their biggest threat yet. That coming from the North, from the barrow of the Frost Lich which had been opened and was spewing hordes of monsters who were out to get them. However for this tale we have to wait for book 3 and I cannot wait. This book is full of excitement and is a real hoot, I love the skulks and their quirky way of talking, and the silliness involved in the miniaturisation of Mac and Seth and their squeaky voices and love the fact that though tiny they still had the courage to fight on with the rest of their team.
First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”
Second, I am not a bot...at least I don’t think I am. Yes this is copy pasta (just learned that term, so fun!) simply because I feel like any book I read deserves acknowledgement but at the same time my feelings on reviews conflict with the normal review process.
I enjoyed this book, so my goal is to promote it and help the author. If you are a potential reader, just stop reading now and take the above as all you need to know. I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. It is my opinion that Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. Or not if you don’t think this book is for you. That choice is all yours and the beauty of art appreciation. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.
If you are a member of the IAK Guild (thanks, Jason) or part of the review police, feel free to criticize me and challenge my philosophy on reviewing art. I think we all love a good debate. The forums are open and I welcome your comments. I was wrong in my previous request to get you to stop. Your blatant disregard for that request has led to some fun discussions. Growth is important for us all.
Very enjoyable book! I am having a hard time understanding why I liked it so much even after writing and deleting this review several times.
I think I'm just relieved to be reading a book where it doesn't feel like I'm being attacked personally for my own beliefs, and I can just enjoy the story?
Very little swearing, no political talk pushing a real life liberal viewpoint, no snide comments towards people who hold religious beliefs. No harems, no gay couples thrown into the mix just to have representation. No socialist nonsense shoved down your throat, etc. Just a good LITRPG story with a believable backstory, with a little romance and a little intrigue.
I like how Carrie writes her female MC's especially. They feel like real women who are strong but still believable (arent Mary-Sue's). Her male MC's are ok, but she could improve on capturing them a bit better--thought it's admittedly hard to write convincing characters of the opposite gender. The Male MC's tend to be a bit hollow and it's harder (as a male myself) to relate to them or their logic.
Discover how a group of people survive when whisked into the world of an online game. Gaming is fun, absolutely. But would you have the courage to face game challenges if losing could really mean your life?
Jace, who had never been a gamer, has learned a lot about his new world. He is the leader of the small settlement he founded with the four others also pulled from reality and NPC's they befriended.
But all is not well here. An evil necromancer plots war against all not sworn to her. Beasts crazed by the Winter’s Breath fill the woods and their small settlement has much to learn if they are to survive.
I had fun reading this installment of Tales...Jace & Mac, River & Seth level up, complete goals then live their lives. This book brings hope to the population after hearing that there were Ironsteaders on the case. I'm excited to see where the next book leads...
We are peeling more of the onion that is the world that Carrie Summers built. The story is becoming quite entertaining, as some of the mythos of her other series bleeds through and we see more of the connections between the stories.
Really looking forward to either of her series new instalments.
It took me a good third of the book to figure out what was going on - and I read the first in the series less than a year ago! The pacing and structure felt off, and the characters, while clearly differentiated, felt a little cardboardy (Seth being the prime example). I really enjoy the author's main series, Stonehaven League, but think I'm going to have to leave this one here.
A very enjoyable book. The only complaint I have was the use of profanity. Profanity is so distracting from a good store. The store would have been so much better without it.
Granted the profanity could have been so much worse. The characters in the store were actively trying not to swear. For that reason I didn't take a star off like I normally would.
Can I get book 3 now?? This one was great, a light LitRPG that can have zombies without being dark, and romance without being crude. The quests, world building, etc all work and make me want to read more. Here's hoping the next book comes out soon.
Really enjoyed this sequel. Fun characters, great build of the story from book one. Hinted at some answers to questions raised in book one and asked a whole lot more. Very excited for book three!! After another Stonehaven book of course. :P
Not as interesting as I expected, but I've never been a big zombie fan, so that could have something to do with it. Overall though, it's still a fun read, and fans of the first book should have no trouble putting this one into your read pile.
Over all the novel was well written and enjoyable. My only nitpick is the main characters sexual longing for their partner just seemed out of place in the early chapters.
For some reason, this book did not click for me. I read it in bursts with twelve to thirty hours between sessions. I like the characters, enjoyed the plot, and smirked at the humor. Still, I recommend it. Even if it does not quite click for you.
Some great world building in this one, expanding on the first and filling in on things alluded to. Some really great twists and turns, definitely an improvement over the first one, and I loved that one!
Great world building and extremely interesting overall storyline. The mystery of how they ended up on the Rimeshore gives a great backdrop to the story.
This is a good book. You shouldy read it. I like the story. The characters are fun. The book is a good read. i enjoyed it alot.. Download or buy it today. why not?
