All his stories are Angel stories. Mel King is an Angel, banished to Earth long ago for falling in love with a human. Now, based in the city of Rome, he hunts and kills evil mortals on God’s behalf. He knows he can never love again. That time is long over. But then Nora appears, and everything changes. Nora Rossi is just trying to start her singing career when she witnesses Mel King commit a terrible act. Now she can’t seem to get away from him...or his ridiculous Angel story. How far will they go before he finally tells her the truth?
KING OF THE WICKED was a terrific fallen angel paranormal romance. Mel is an angel who disobeyed his father (God) and was supposed to die. But after a battle between the angels and the intervention of his brother, he and his brother Michael make separate deals with their father. Michael will hunt down evil people on Earth. Mel will kill them.
The story is told in dual timelines. In the past timeline from 200,000 years ago, we see what happened between Mel and the human woman he loved, Lillith, as well as the other Angels. In the present-day timeline, which was my favorite, we see Mel’s life on Earth in present day Italy where he is hunting down men who prey upon women and slowly falling for Nora Rossi, an opera singer. I really liked Nora, who has a complicated relationship with her sister, and helps Mel and Michael hunt for the rogue Angel who is killing women on Earth. One of my favorite things about the book was the complex backstory between Mel, Michael, Judith and Agatha and the orders Michael was given, plus the twisted bargains with God. I loved the slow reveals of information. I really liked Gilla as a character and as her part in the story wove threads in and we got to the end… what an ending! I now desperately need book two! 5/5 stars.
Engaging and thoroughly interesting with a nice dose of steamy romance. Really enjoyed the brother dynamic between Mel and Michael, and the dual timelines layer the story nicely. The characters had great depth and the writing was on point. Would definitely recommend. Also, I'm really going to need to see what happens next after that ending...
This book is an amazing story about angels and their interactions with humans. I simply could not put it down, and it ended on a huge cliffhanger. I can’t wait to read the next one!
This is the first book in a series that already has the next two books available, so a big plus for those of us who like to know we don’t have to wait to keep reading! There is the average amount of set up for the reader to get into the worlds of the characters. There is a nice weave of basically what appears to be four major characters for this book. There was enough closure with this book that the cliffhanger of the last page did not leave me frustrated but rather curious to see what happens next. All in all a very good read that kept me entertained.
This was such a fun read about what happens when angels and humans meet and fall in love. There's mystery and suspense. I really enjoyed the dual timeline explaining how Mel ended up in his current predicament and the sweet romance he shared with Lilith.
Great read. A very natural pace. Interesting characters and love how the story unfolds. Looking forward to next chapter. Anxious to know what happens next.
An immersive imaginative take on Angels, humanity and immortality…
T.R. Hamby has constructed an original immersive and imaginative take on Angels and how their world interacts with the human one. We meet ‘Nora’ who is a struggling performer when she encounters ‘Mel’ who at first seems like a threat until he reveals who he truly is. What follows is a journey that will keep readers turning pages as the twists and turns present themselves. Its well written and even logical in places – especially when it comes to how these Angel types operate and have operated over time. We get a glimpse at the history of ‘Mel’, his world, and of course ‘Michael’ who plays an instrumental and pivotal role in the wider story which plays out.
With morality being a key theme throughout, these Angels and their motive is to put an end to bad people doing bad things which adds some high stakes as they must track them down before more bad happens. This concept is then woven into ‘Nora’s’ story which continually evolves. Romance and selflessness sits at the very centre of a real world fantasy story that will leave you wanting more.
Mel and Michael are angels with a very precarious brotherly bond. After an almost deadly sword fight between them, God banishes the two to earth to destroy evil humans. Along the way, the brothers meet two mortal women with unique perspectives on the world. I appreciated how the women dealt with their traumatic past, how the brothers supported the women's feelings, and how the brother's bond was a prominent part of the story. I can't wait to read more from this author.
King of the Wicked, a novel by T.R. Hamby, is a story about fallen angels, vengeance, punishment, friendship, and love. I was surprised with just how much romance played its part in this story. I don’t know why exactly, I simply did not expect that. In fact, I would say that in my opinion, romance seemed to be the biggest focus, the strongest driving force throughout.
However, it wasn’t standard ‘will they, won’t they’ romance, or the kind of thing where you, the reader, can only buy the romance because it’s simply there on the page and you have no other choice. It’s actually very sweet, and completely believable. There aren’t any major ‘but who would say that?’ or ‘just tell them!’ moments. If a character is being less than genuine, there is typically a reason for it, though the reader may not find out right away. But once you get the information, you will understand why a character said (or didn’t say) what they said (or didn’t say).
Now, please don’t get the wrong impression; overall, this isn’t a ‘romance’ story. There are an absolute ton of things going on throughout. But romance, the relationships themselves, are always there no matter what, no matter how many other plotlines run their course.
King of the Wicked is very much a character driven story; the characters themselves drive the story, and their lives and personalities are fleshed out to such an amazing extent.
From start to finish, I was completely gripped. I seriously could not put this down! Unfortunately (for me), it does end on a cliffhanger; and it’s a full on cliffhanger. This isn’t a mild, ‘we lost this battle, but we’ll win the day’ moment. It’s like a car going off the cliff, all wheels have left the ground and it’s falling, and then end. Not literally of course; no cars feature in the finale (oops, spoiler warning).
But fear not, this is the first of a trilogy, and all three entries are out, so you yourself will be the only barrier to moving on or not. Or, in my case, an extremely long, pre-existing TBR list.
Now, one thing I should mention to potential readers; this is Adult Fiction through and through. There’s plenty of sex, drugs, and rock & roll. Ok, well, sex and cursing at least. The basic premise also revolves around what could be seen as a rewriting of some modern religions. If you are deeply religious, and cannot enjoy that sort of thing, you may not appreciate what this book has to offer.
What I love about books written by T.R. Hamby is that through her words, she places you so close to her characters that while reading you feel like you are sitting next to them. “King of the Wicked” is a fantasy story with true-to-life, likeable characters whom you immediately want to befriend despite them all having their unresolved issues.
Mel and Michael are brothers. And Angels. But they aren’t exactly angelic, at least not in the way we are used to think about angels. Nora and Gilla are humans and singers. And they also don’t do what modern women are supposed to do with their lives. Still, all four of them crave something normal, something that everyone seems to get so easily. They want to be happy, not really knowing what happiness means for them. And they don’t want to be alone, not really used to having healthy, fulfilling relationships with other people.
If you aren’t perfect, can you be happy? They seem to ask themselves this question all the time. That is before they meet each other. And then, everything changes for them. It’s a shame that not every change turns out for the better.
Nora lives in Rome. She follows her dream to become a famous opera singer. She meets Mel, rich, handsome, and with an air of mystery around him. Soon, she witnesses him doing something horrible, but she can’t condemn him since his actions seem justified. Their story of togetherness begins, and I don’t have words enough to express how sweet, deeply sincere, and, well, real their developing relationship feels while you are reading their story.
The tension between the brothers is almost palpable. Their past, which goes back not decades but millennia, hides tragedies and secrets. To humans, it might seem that the things they did to each other are impossible to forget or forgive. Still, Nora and Gilla aren’t ordinary humans. Maybe, it’s their own traumatic experiences from the past have influenced them in a way that made them able to see things from a different perspective.
“King of the Wicked” is the first book of the Banished series. It ends with a huge cliffhanger, and I can’t wait to return to Nora, Mel, and Angels who can sometimes be the most vicious villains.
It is an amazing fantasy novel, I loved the romantic story of Melkira and Lilith, how they ran from the paradise created by God, why Melkira was punished for eternity without the love of his life and under the hand of his angel brother Michael, how he has survived for centuries among humans and doing his job to kill the evil humans who must suffer in hell. Until he meets Nora an opera singer who suffers from depression, they become close friends and finally recognize that they love each other and the big question is what will happen to them, because he is immortal and she is human. My favorite character is Mel, there are many authors who manage to make you adore the bad guy, in this novel Mel is the disobedient son of God and Michael is the good guy, and here the roles are reversed until you discover the great love that Michael has for Mel, and that only Nora knows, because one and the other have made pacts with God so that nothing happens to the other, including Nora.
What I didn't like was the fact that being a fantasy novel the Angels didn't have special powers to know or see things that humans are not supposed to see or know, but in reality they are made to look like simply immortal beings, without something special. For Mel, he only had his anger and that was enough to kill humans, but it didn't affect the other angels. Michael was very strong and nothing else, two other bad Angels had powers that exceeded Mel and Michael, it made them stronger and special, so I didn't understand why they couldn't all be more special, like seers or with a super hearing, LOL. Instead I loved that they can love, although they didn't know they could fall in love with humans if it does and with the same strength and pain one feels when alone or in love.
It is average, at the beginning it was a little hard to follow the story but once you get past the middle of the book it reads faster, but I think it can only be read by young people and adults who like fantasy and can deal with religious stories because this novel has a lot to do with biblical passages.
I thought I was all fantasy-d out. All books in the genre are starting to feel the same. Not this one, though! While there are many classic elements, they are organized in a way that feels fresh. The story is packed with different themes and substories, without becoming confusing or difficult to follow. Each arc is followed thoroughly enough to make it feel as though the book contains the content of three different books - at one point I thought I'd finished the book as the plot was so neatly tied together, only to realize that about half of the book was still left to go!
As always, I managed to find a few pointers that I must share for the sake of the review. The language use itself is good, but when other languages are involved, another round of checking with native speakers would have been useful. As someone who is fluent in Swedish, the mistakes made in the use of the language probably bothered me more than someone who does not speak it, so it is probably only an issue for a small amount of readers. While there were no plot holes as far as I could detect - which is a feat due to the nature of the tale - I did find the cliffhanger to be more of a freefall situation than a hanging situation. Where is the rest of the book!?
I will absolutely be reading the next book, and not just to get closure. This is my kind of book for sure, and if you enjoy fantasy mixed with mystery and romance, it might just be your kind of book, too.
This book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Evil can't survive in his presence. His wrath brings death to the wicked. But the angel who sends wicked souls to hell, lives in a hell of his own. Every night he relives the death of his beloved. For centuries he has been afraid to love and lose again. But now he has fallen in love with a mortal Will all hell break lose or will he find heaven again?
The King of The Wicked is a tale about a fallen angel, who has lost God's favor, and has been banished to Earth to serve out his immortal life. The author, T.R. Hamby showcases both Melkira's angst and his strength. His vulnerability and his wrath. The dichotomy doesn't jar, instead appeals. The writing smoothly flowing from one situation to another, while engaging you and allowing you to become invested in Mel and his human love, Nora. All the characters in the book have an arc. They are never perfect but have their own foibles and weaknesses. You care for them despite that or maybe because of that. Neither are the characters one dimensional, they have many sides to them. Nora is capable of loving Mel, but she can also care for his tough as nails brother. Mel hates his brother, but he can't help being protective and loving him at the same time. The fantasy is appealing even as the book moves between the past and the present. Give it a read. You're sure to be invested in The Banished Series.
4.5** ⭐️ More people need to pick this book up because it’s everything I was looking for and more
Shout out to the author for getting in touch with me about this book because I can’t believe I’d never heard of it before I honestly can’t decide who I like more lol Mel or Michael, they’re both such sweet cinnamon rolls despite being hard and tough on the outside and I’m here for it It’s so nice and refreshing to see such healthy communication between our love interests, I was honestly touched by how open they were and how understanding they both were of each other and their needs, it’s something I’ve sadly never had before and I could feel myself becoming so invested in their relationship I also felt like I could relate to Nora and Guilla so much - which speaking of , there’s definitely trigger warnings in here for rape and sexual assault and violence so please be aware before going into this series. I loved all the characters interactions and how the world building was done and explained, it was easy to digest and having it explained by the characters themselves made me feel so safe for some reason lol These two men are MEN , like GRADE A BEEF y’all 🔥 Like seriously lol, I’ll definitely be continuing on to the next book because oh my GOD did the ending have me so scared for my boys 😩
I like how the King of the Wicked plays off of the Book of Genesis from the Bible, but it’s not exactly how we are used to the story. I love the changes made to what was really going on with Adam and Eve (or Lillith, in this case), and how the first woman ever created ended up eating the forbidden fruit. I also like how it goes back and forth 200,000 years, so we get to understand more about what happened between the two brothers (who are Angels) and the relationship between the angel Mel and Lillith. I don’t normally like romance books, because they can be overdone. But I actually liked reading the relationship and how it developed throughout the story. The relationship between the two brothers was also captivating. I was rooting for them to patch things up. I like that the author discusses mental health issues, such as living with depression and PTSD. It's very realistic. Depression doesn't just go away. You have to learn how to cope with it. And that is nicely depicted in the story. The book ends with a HUGE cliffhanger! I can’t wait to read the next one and see what’s going to happen. I’m definitely invested in these characters.
TR Hamby's first book in the Banished Series is genuinely unique. A fantasy novel focused on two Angels who are brothers that have been banished to Earth and given a mission to deal with the dark and disturbing elements in the human race. Easy enough until some of those they track turn out to be their own kind.
But what is it like for the brothers to exist for thousands of years loathing each other? How do they reconcile this antipathy and still work together, and how do they protect those they love? That love causes no end of stress and tension between the brothers.
Hamby is masterful at ramping up the intrigue and tension chapter after chapter. I was so engaged in the story that when I finished it at midnight last night, I immediately bought the next one, Queen of the Immortals.
An interesting and worthwhile read. I’ve always liked the idea of angels descending on earth and living among us, and it was delightful to see that expounded on in this book. I also loved the creative spin on the story of Adam and Eve, especially that bit about what ultimately kindled the flames of temptation. While the book is essentially a romantic fantasy, beneath that layer of amorous interplay, it touches upon deeper philosophical questions of morality, identity and meaning, such as “If God exists, why does He let evil run wild in this world?” Overall, it’s a promising first installment in a trilogy that literally leaves you wanting for more. Highly recommended for romantic fantasy lovers and supernatural mystery fans alike.
King of the Wicked is a fantastic fantasy, with so much appeal. I seriously could not put it down. The characters are real—believable—and so well developed. From the tangled web of emotions, plot twists, and world building, to the action, drama and engaging pace of the book, I was totally invested. It kept me turning the pages. The concept is intriguing and clever, and I loved the flash backs to Mel’s previous life—it tugged at my heartstrings quite a few times. The relationships, both romantic and familial, are superbly written. And the cliff hanger ending? Oh, my! I’m definitely carrying on with The Banished Series as soon as my tbr pile allows! Bravo Ms Hamby—you have a new fan!
Epic tale where past meets present as two brothers are forced to work together, and they’re both angels. I just finished this book, and I’m prepared to start the second one. I like when a book is immersive, and this one sucked me right in. Wonderful characterization, dialogue, plot, and the twists and turns are awesome! I really loved Nora, and hope she’s in book II. I highly recommend this book for lovers of fantasy, romance, and paranormal stories🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
So I have just finished the King of the Wicked and I have to say that I have a problem. I have a problem putting good books down. From the opening chapter to the closing, I was smitten with the characters and Nora feels like a friend. T. R. Hamby has a way of telling a story in which you feel you are a part of it. I can't wait to jump into the next book, I just wish my day job would stop getting in the way!
I just finished King Of The Wicked. I selected this book from Booktasters because it sounded interesting. I have to say, I was not at all disappointed with my choice. Also, it took me a long time to read it simply because I didn’t want to finish it. I loved every minute of it. I loved the relationships between angels and humans. This book had it all: friendship, love and vengeance. This is a must read! I can’t wait to find out what happens in the next installment!!
To be the start of a series this book was really good. I love how the flashbacks were giving hints bit by bit. The world-building is so good, sometimes it remained me why I'm not into "religion" that much but I need more, so I'll be jumping on the second one ASAP.
This was a very entertaining beginning to what promises to be an enthralling series. The pacing was done to perfection, keeping me engaged all the way to the end. The romances were well earned, the characters, deeply layered. The story explores the dynamics of angel-human interactions, amid an intriguing angel-angel conflict. From love scenes to fight scenes, every scene felt organic, nothing labored. I emphatically recommend this to anyone who enjoys supernatural romance. Hats off to the author.
Is it a retelling? Is it a mystery? Is it a love story?
No! The King of the Wicked encompasses it all. Overall, this is an enjoyable read with enough twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. Undercover stories about true love, recovery, and vengeance... loved it!
I am looking forward to reading the next in the series.
I loved the premise of this story: Banished Angels, Immortals, special powers, and evil-doers. A real page-turner. The plot and characters are very interesting and engaging, and T. R. Hamby's Immortal world has begun to be exposed. Who am I kidding? I loved everything about this story! I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed this book. I loved the relationships the author created. I felt so many emotions reading this, I was a wreck. I thought for sure I knew where the ending was going but man, I didn't know shit! A great read, will be reading book 2 for sure.
Hamby hooks you in with well-written, believable characters and a storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat at times. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
Nora. And Mekira, an angel fall in love but at what cost? This was an enjoyable read with good characters and story. I am going to read the rest of the series for sure.
