Spoilers below . . . . . . I love this author's writing. I have read many, but not all, of her books. But what I am not a fan of is such a drastic change in the love interest. I love this series and was very invested in Mia and King. I do not like that the love interest was replaced. Mia and King's love story spanned literally 3000 years and now Mia is gone and in pops Jeni. My hope was that Jeni turned out to be Mia in some way. There will some hints, like the familiarity between the two. And maybe its a possibility in future books. But it did not happen in this one. Great writing but I was sorely disappointed in love story/romance of the story.
I honestly believed I had said goodbye and farewell to this character...LOL So, I have to say I am surprised at least to this turn out...
I'm not gonna sugar coat this whole ordeal, I have my reservations towards this whole new set up, i am not thrilled BUT I am intrigued...
Well, that one alone shouldn't be a surprise, since King is an anti-hero one can't even describe in words, or with feelings, and you can't forget him, for sure...
So, I'm gonna stay open to this new chapter and cheer "long live the King"
King, King, King. Where to start with you. You are my favorite character to both love and hate all at the same time while I feel that you are also the most misunderstood character just by your mere actions and personalities alone. I can never get enough of you my dear King but enough about my pronouncement of undying love as well as hate. This story was not what I was expecting and it was a short read to boot leaving me with more questions and wanting more of this story. Just when I thought that I had come to terms with the events in the last book and said goodbye, this book does a 180 and I got to say hello to Jeni while scratching my head as to where the relationship was with the pair was going. There is so much I could say about this book but then it would ruin it for others so I will leave this as you must read this installment as it was a great read!
Thrilled with the new direction the author is taking us. Surprised by the changes made but intrigued for what’s to come. Mimi has one it again! Loved it!
Omg, how could u do this 2 us Mimi. I have cried, fumed, laughed and cried again. Hurricane Mia, really? I want to tell the world about the book, but all I can say is it is fantastic, it has as Death in it and a Unicorn. Congratulations on another excellent book.
I gotta be honest here. Author Pamfiloff's King series is my favorite ever. I've read this series multiple times and every time it puts me in my happy place. This book was hard to deal with in most places. It left me with a ton of...huh? But I had to back up and remember how complicated King's history is. I had to stop and say, trust the process. Trust the author. She's got this.
We meet Jeni and discover she has a link to the body that came ashore and the Almighty King. Then we meet a mysterious woman who wants King dead. Jeni is puzzled and so are we. But Author Pamfiloff sets the tone and its ominous and dark.
"The sun was just coming up, but the fog and drizzle gave the home an unwelcoming vibe. The dark windows seemed too dark, like the glass was painted black on the inside. The air around it seemed coated in heavy shadows. Even the pristine red roses in the front seemed wicked with their huge jutting thorns. A chill crawled up my spine as the car parked at the curb, just at the end of the walkway leading to the enormous stained-glass front door. Jack got out of the car. “Wait here,” he told the driver. I got out, too, but stayed near the car on the sidewalk. Suddenly, my feet were freezing. No, not cold. Freezing. Like standing barefoot on ice."
This book was about setting up the undeniable relationship between Jeni and King. How it evolves as things are revealed. We don't know a lot, but we do know she's a good person with lots of horrible events in her past. Her personality is juxtaposed with King's, who keeps telling her to remember he's not a good person.
"“You genuinely mean it.” He sounded surprised. “You do not wish to have money, to be the sort of person who fears nothing?” I wouldn’t flush a winning lotto ticket down the toilet, but I didn’t want to be some sort of supernatural mob boss, which was what I assumed he was getting at. I shook my head no. “You are lying to yourself.” He grabbed my chin and gazed down into my eyes. “If you could punish the man who killed your mother, would you do it? How about the person who broke your father’s legs? Having power means making sure those who harm you or your family pay with their lives.” “I’d rather see them go to jail.” As I said those words, I knew it was a lie. We’d both witnessed what happened to people who hurt me. “You would never feel helpless again, like you do about your mother.”
So if she denies the destiny King offers of glory and revenge, how does she fit in with death's plan? Is she the perfect person to show King the right path, or will she be rolled over in King's urgency for revenge? In other books I might have been upset with all the questions I'm left with. But again, I trust the author. She's never let me down while revealing King's story and I'm all in. She's given us characters to root for, whether they be evil or trying to discover their own way to save the people they love.
While I absolutely loved the book, I'm kinda feeling betrayed. I read the book the day it came out, and it's taken me this long to write my review.
I felt really invested in King and Mia's love story in the last 5 books, and after 3 thousand years or whatever, King really did end up with the short end of the stick. Was it his fault? Totally... but wow. I felt a little traumatized after finding out what happened.
POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT
. . . . . . ... OK so I'm still holding my breath that the story will all come together and work itself out for King and Mia. Even if she's supposedly "dead" and gave up her Seer powers, I still think that there is a HEA for those two. My theory is that the ancient Seers are giving them one last chance and did bring Mia back and she's "Jeni" but doesn't know it (even though she supposedly isn't able to, but heck they are super powerful and can do anything, right?) That would explain why their drawn to each other and why she keeps having visions of him/ her/Mia? I also feel as though Mimi wouldn't purposely rip those two apart forever. I mean, that is just cruel to ppl like me who get SERIOUSLY invested in characters and won't even finish the book of the main characters die cause I can't take the heartbreak. If it's not what I'm hoping for and Jeni is just some random woman, I'm going to be so disappointed.
I loved that Ariadne showed up briefly and that King got to see his daughter briefly even if she's just a spirit..
Oh one other question I would need answering... what happened to Mack and Teddi???? If King killed off all the Seers did he kill her too?? Did he kill Mack??? So many questions that I am praying Mimi answers.
Overall, I still thought the book was awesome. The King series is definitely one I recommend people read, so I'll just keep my fingers crossed that I'm right or somewhat right and see what happens in the next book(s).
I'm giving the book 4 stars just cause of the King/ Mia loop being broken and it then breaking my heart.

Most unexpected, was Mimi writing another KING book! but, here we are reading about one of the most loved/hated characters around. A huge twenty five years have passed since King last stood on dry ground, when he and his box wash up at a shipping container yard, after hurricane Mia had screamed her way through. There is nothing that can be done for the poor dead man inside, so authorities are called.
Of course nothing is simple in the land of Mimifantasy, and we wouldn't have it any other way!
So, who is this Jack fellow who has conveniently turned up to work at the yards, and why is he so. . . .nice? our heroine, Jeni, is about to find out the elegant man with the stunning blue eyes isn't all he seems.
OK, hmm, I'm really thinking on what the hell Mimi has in store for us, and what crazy twist she'll come up with, just to F@%I with us. I have a theory, but it seems a bit obvious, but stranger things have happened at sea!
Oh King, to be evil but also have a heart when it comes to his family!! So happy to read another book with you in it!! King is my absolute favorite antihero!!!
Well dun Mimi Jean Pamfiloff another great story, thanks for continuing Kings story, I'am looking forward to the next instalment I've read all the King sceries and was glad when I saw you were bringing out more of these book's. I have allso enjoyed reading the Ten Club and Mac. I love all you're most recent books keep t❤❤🥂hem comming ❤❤
Well dun Mimi Jean Pamfiloff anouther great story, thanks for continuing Kings story I'am looking forward to the next instalment, I've read all the King sceries and Ten Club plus Mac. I love all you're most recent books keep them comming
Yay! The return of one my favourite anti-heroes ever.....the delectable, evily bad King! Although there's something a little bit different about him, or is there?
King has returned with revenge and retribution on his mind, but quite, shy, introverted Jeni, who he bribes into helping him, is not all she seems and might just get under the ruthless King's skin. We saw the return of bad King at the end of Ten Club, but is he redeemable or forever cursed?
Well I did really enjoy this even though there is a massive twist away from the previous books. I'm intrigued though and although Jeni is the female lead, not his soulmate Mia, you never know what twist Mimi has up her sleeve. I've learnt to expect the unexpected! It ends on a cruel cliffy but I for one am looking forward to more as I couldn't put this down.
This book was what I expected from Mimi!! There were twists that weren't expected and of course when you think you have it figured out there is a twist you don't see coming! Mimi takes your mind on a ride and you get lost in the story and feel sad when it is over, but is it ever really over??? Loved how once Jack puts a cuff on he realizes that he is King and gets his memory back. Jeni seems like a sweet, mild manner gal and you realize that she is tough as nails and is realizing that she is special! Loved this book and series!!
Jeni Arnold is the most introverted non confrontational person imaginable, who is just trying to survive. Working for a construction company in a hurricane disaster zone is not what she thought she would be doing, but she’s got to pay the mortgage on her fathers house and take care of them both. When a metal box containing a dead body washes up on the Tampa shore at her works site events are set into motion that will leave her life forever changed.
After a dark stranger saves Jeni from an attack on the job site at night he shows up and demands a favor in return. Scared out of her mind she’s inexplicably drawn to the man with no memory of who he is, who she fears and oddly feels safe with.
In a whirlwind Jeni is whisked off to her home Tallahassee and then San Francisco. With dangerous people with evil intentions looking for them it’s only a matter of time before choices must be made leading to either a Revenge or redemption. In a world where the dead don't stay dead, Everything has a price.. Even for King.
This is book 6 in the series and it ends with a to be continued vs the typical cliffhanger. Thankfully King seems to still have a ways to go before his story ends, because I for one don’t think I will ever tire of him.
This book is jam-packed with "oh, Mimi did not go there" moments
Writing a review while my mind is still spinning is probably not the best idea. This book is jam-packed with "oh, Mimi did not go there" moments. I feel emotionally violated. This book was so well written and thought out. The plot justifiable and just made so much sense. It really is the type of book that you have to read blind. On that point, I will finish by saying The Dead King was totaly worth the wait. A must read- the return of King was epic.
I loved the King books, and maybe this one is one me and I should have done more due diligence on this one.
I don’t remember the last book of the series, so I felt like I was constantly missing something. So much so in fact, I didn’t realize this was even a King King book until maybe 1/3 of the way.
It was full of contradictions and moved both slow and way too fast. In my opinion, it was a mess. Which makes me sad, because I had previously enjoyed this story. But King, is in fact, dead to me.
In this book we have the return of King, a man we all though could not come back, but we were wrong of course. At the beginning he does not know who is is as he wakes up in the safe after being washed up after Hurricane Mia.
Jenni works as part of a clean up crew and after the box is found she is attacked by a colleague, but rescued by a man who does not remember who he is. She knows that he is dangerous though.
King has been in the box at the bottom of the ocean for the last 25 years, but now out he needs to find out who he is and Jenni is the one he sees that can help him, with a little bribery. When a woman goes to Jenni and gives her a bracelet to help him with her memories, Jenni is a little suspicious, especially as the woman says she will be back in a few days to kill him.
King certainly uses her and her resources, and although I am not sure on this new romance, he does sleep with her. Jenni knows she feels a connection with him, but does not know why.
King goes to places that he has memories of and Jenni follows even if some of the places creep her out, but it is only when he sees the date on a newspaper does he actually put on the cuff to get his memories back and she gets a message from the Seers that King needs to clear up Ten Club so that he can die.
I have enjoyed this book and the turn that the book has taken and I really look forward to see what is going to happen next.
This book was an unexpected surprise as the author originally decided to end the series with the book that came before but evidently changed her mind when ideas came a knocking.
The main character King is a deliciously semi evil character who started something with good intentions but didn't realise just how badly he had screwed up until something happened to break this reader's heart.
Mimi Jean, the author, certainly knows what's she's doing when she wants to make her reader's shout WTF when reading her works because it certainly hasn't been the first time I've ever said it while reading her book.
The dead king has definitely turned the world of King upside down and has me churning out my own theories on how the future of the series will play out
I didn't know that this book is a continuation of the previous series, that I didn't read. What I also didn't know is that this book is also a part of a new series and has a cliffhanger.
My review is based only on my frustration because I was left with a cliffhanger that I didn't want because nowhere was mentioned (or I didn't see it) that this is book 1.
It's my first time reading from this author, I liked it and the story seems to have potential. I don't know although if I well read the previous books, but I want to know what will happen next.
While admittedly you could read this book having never read any of the previous King book and you would thoroughly enjoy it, I would suggest you do yourself a favor and start from book one. This book is an amazing story from page one! Sweet, scared Jeni gets wrapped up in the evil King world and both she and King have to work their way to finding out what her place is in his world. It certainly turns out that it isn't what either one of them expected! As usual with Mimi Jean, the ending leaves you craving more. I, personally can't wait!
I love the story, but it took me a while to see the new storyline. I do not get why the author had to kill Mia and the children and repeat the history. I get that walking the same path only leads to the same results. It also seems like King is a hardhead that need to be given infinite opportunities to learn something, what I did not like was the lack of context in the beginning. I checked 3 times to see if I opened the right book, but I will wait for the next one to see where the story culminates and if King can find a way towards salvation.

Holy cow! This newest installment in the King saga will keep you guessing! When a body in a box washes ashore after a hurricane Jeni's life is forever changed. Is Jack good or is he evil? Can Jeni overcome her own internal struggles to become the woman she is meant to be? Or will it all go to Hell? It's a Mimi Jean book you won't find out till the bitter end. Does anything ever really end? I'm not telling. Read it!
One of my favorite characters from Mimi (besides cimil which is a given) is King. I am so glad we get to read more about him and his journey to redemption. I can see alot of twists coming up and cant wait. Just wish the next book was ready. I didn't want to stop reading and can not wait for the next book. My heart did break alittle but hope we get a solution soon. Do not want to spoil anything just recommend this continuation of King as a must read.
This series just keeps going, so many possibilities. King has returned, washed ashore to Jeni. She has abilities unbeknownst to her and King plans to use them. Many years have passed since the end of the Ten Club book and he has needs. Mostly revenge. It was interesting to read how his return would play out and Jeni’s role in his plans. I say it came together well and leaves options for more books.
Well Mimi has done it again. The 6th book of the King series will start you with a laugh and then your emotions will be on a roller coaster ride until the end. I couldn’t put the book down. This is a book about lost love and redemption. King will do what he feels is necessary to get back to the love of his life and children. Will he have help along the way? We’ll find out as the story continues. Congrats Mimi!
I have been pulled back into this emotionally thrilling darkly dangerous world and could not be happier about it. No one does wickedly twisted in the best possible way better than my favorite dark hero of all King and this journey was no exception. I formally bow and am grateful to the queen of unexpected plot twists that leave me begging for more.....
This series wasn't first by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. The dark world drew me in, twisted my heart and emotions and always left me wanting more. This book continues the tale while putting the typical Mimi spin on it. It tested me, made me a little mad, but then found acceptance to move on with the story. You'll have to read to find out what happens.
