Beautiful little book. Short pieces which the introduction by Nelson Foster describes as “late thoughts” of one of the west’s first native Zen teachers. They are apparently written in the zuihitsu style of “following the brush”; also described as “spontaneous natterings” or jottings. They reminded me of the latter Borges in their brevity, although generally much briefer, and more pointed: more useful. They include thoughts, memories, bits of autobiography, and of course Aitken Roshi’s teaching in the Zen tradition.
Like his other books I believe that it could be dipped into repeatedly over the years with good effect. I hope I return to it many times.
