Fantastic Story
I love books like this, but not all of them are for me. I’ve read a few series like this one and while some of them have the video-game-like elements that are first and forefront (you get sucked into a game, or you KNOW you’re in a game). Where, with The Bright so far, they are there (setting up skills based on skill points earned) but it’s more in the background. The Bright series has absolutely got my attention and I’m really intrigued where Knowles is going to take it.

In Retaliate we learn more and more about each character and find out a lot more of the secrets from this world. We are also treated to some romance and some kinship between some of the characters that were a really nice break in the breakneck pace of some of the action scenes.

One of the best parts of this is that even though it’s a book two, we still get a nice story arc. You can tell there’s a larger and longer arc for the series – but this book itself read like its own story and had a beginning, a middle, and an end. (I mention this because a lot of book two’s seem to be just a “to be continued” kind of story without any kind of ending).

The narration by Steve Campbell is also great. There was a choice he made for one of the characters that at first I was confused by, but I actually went back to figure out why he did that and I think it made sense. It was a bit raspy at first and kind of pulled me out of the story, but then I realized it was a good choice and it stopped bothering me. I wanted to point it out because Campbell is an excellent narrator and sometimes you have to trust their choices. Bray did similar things in the Hell Divers books and they’re some of my favorite moments in those books.

Overall, Retaliate was an excellent book and a great addition to this series.

This is the second book in the series I read and like the first, I enjoyed it very much. Alex Knowles creates a unique blend of sci-fi, fantasy and LitRPG.
Like the first book, this one can be described as Star Wars meets LitRPG. The Bright Lords and their powers remind me very much of the Jedi, with the difference that they have stats and level up.
In this second installment, Tytan and his crew travel to a hidden planet that is a bit like a Jedi training camp. But, of course, the dark forces introduced in book 1 soon begin chasing them again.
A very entertaining story and not as stats-heavy as many others.
I listened to the audiobook and think that the narrator did a much better job than in book 1 where his female voices made me cringe.
I recommend this book to LitRPG fans who enjoy something a little bit different.

Review of books 1-3:

I'm a bit confused on how to properly review or even classify this. This is mostly a standard fantasy fare, but dabbles in a bit of LitRPG and Cultivation, though none of the aspects gain prominence enough to provide a standard genre to park this in.

A good bone of a plot which sadly isn't really focused enough despite a very good prose. The world is never fully introduced to us, there is no history of the factions or what "Bright" is, and why we have stat sheets and cultivation techniques intermixed with sci-fi elements. It's like everything is thrown is. To author's credit, the mix works well, but then without a fleshed out backstory, it just lacks foundation to stand on it's own.

The plot also focuses purely on the MC and at times to the detriment of the macro plot. The timeline sync between the two is jarring and doesn't really align well. So much focus is on the MC and his development, that the fact that there are external events happening simultaneously is missing for big chunks of the book.

It certainly wasn't a bad book, as I had enough interest to finish the first 3 in the series, but not really the finished product that would have elevated this to next level.

Will follow Alex and look out for this forthcoming books!

*sigh* Where could I start? There are mutiple different things I wish to talk about, but I don't think I will. Again the book lacks a solid foundation. I do not understand its Bright System or the System itself. The covers are very cool, but none of that happens in the book. Again back to training, and I believe it is a big personal pet peeve of mine. I wished that there was a bit more focus on the Bright System as a whole. I think that would make things a little better in terms of power. But the pacing is way too fast for something that is meant to be vast. I feel that these characters need more time. We spent a reasonable amount of time on the twins, but nothing RJ from the first book. I'm hoping if anything else gets better in this series, it is the characters. So far, RJ and our MC are the only two really fleshed out. As for the others, there are not as well defined as others. Even with the bit of romance that is in this book, I think it is not fleshed out enough yet. But I will continue since the books themselves are not that long.

Fantastic series!💜

This series is exciting and fresh. I’m really enjoying this series and although it’s a fantasy I find many of the situations are what we face every day in the real world. Strong characters, new discoveries and heartbreaking moments make this a fantastic read/listen.
The narration is absolutely amazing. Steve Campbell does a wonderful job bringing the listener into the story with all the different characters and accents. I recommend this book/series!

Super sequel. I really enjoyed this continuation of the story. In a lot of the ways I felt like this was a stronger book than the first book. It really took the premise that the first book established and ran with it.

The Bright Retaliate follows right on the heels of The Bright Lord... a book I loved, and although this book is a slower burn, it gives Ryan, now known as Tytan and his team of survivors a chance to recoup and gain some much-needed power through the process of cultivation! So even though it was slower, I appreciated how the overall story ARC is going...
Steve Campbell did his usual bang-up job narrating this!

The story continued on and what a continuation! I was hooked from start to finish. It got more adventure, more discoveries, and more intrigues. I thought I was going to finish this book without ugly crying but I was dead wrong.

Steve Campbell's amazing. He did so well with all the different characters in this book. Bravo!
