I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Well, he was back.

Starting off the Moonlight Ridge series, Homecoming Heartbreaker introduces us to Mack and Molly. Mack is the oldest of the three boys Jameson, the owner of the resort Moonlight Ridge, adopted when they were younger. He was adopted at age 8 because his mother died in childbirth and his father gave him up. Growing up with an emotionally abusive father, Mack constantly heard that he was responsible for his mother's death, has left Mack always wanting to be in control so that he doesn't hurt anyone. When he and his two brothers, Grey and Travis, get into a car accident, in which he was driving and Travis injures his knee enough to lose a football scholarship, Mack decides to leave town at eighteen and distance himself from everyone, including his childhood love Molly.

It was one night, fifteen years ago, but it had had enormous ramifications.

The story starts fifteen years after the car accident and Mack finds himself having to come back and stay a couple months at Moonlight Ridge because his father Jameson has experienced a brain episode and has to take it easy. His childhood love, Molly, just so happens to be the resorts manager and they are going to have to spend time together and Mack knows he owes her an apology for how he left. Molly has had her own drama to deal with, her father was Jameson's CFO and he was caught for embezzlement and then ended up having a heart-attack and dying, leaving Molly, her mother and two older brothers to deal with the ramifications. Molly's family consists of nothing but leeches and they constantly demand money from her and Molly's afraid to cut the cord with them because they essential blackmail her threatening to tell Jameson that she stole two thousand dollars from him when she was a kid.

She was stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea. And she was drowning.

As you can tell, our leads are dealing with a lot and as this is the first book in the series, it had the heavier load of setting up the series. I thought the groundwork of characters, their relationships, and the setting of Moonlight Ridge was laid out nicely. I thought Mack's motivation of not wanting to lose control around anyone because his dad made him think he was responsible for his mother's death was a bit overplayed. When he comes back to Moonlight Ridge, he does apologize to Molly early but he seemed to want to move on from it very quickly. I liked how Molly still hurt over his abandonment but understood that they were kids and she doesn't work to punish him for his decision. Molly's, just about over-the-top, family steals the show some because a decent amount of focus is giving to their blackmail scheme, even adding in one of the brother's girlfriends, which at first seemed unneeded but will maybe play a part in a continuing thread in the series.

They were groping on the back stairway of Moonlight Ridge and she didn't care. At all.

With Jameson sidelined with health issues, we didn't get scenes with him and Mack as much as I would have liked but we do get a couple povs from him and a little secondary romance involving him and his former housekeeper who is now his nurse, I missed seeing him with all three of the boys. I wish we could have gotten a flashback scene with them as a family before we start with them all separated. The romance between Molly and Mack felt a little stiff at times but delivers a couple scenes to have this fit in the Harlequin Desire category. There were times I thought Mack was too harsh with Molly but I did like how she stood up to him. I didn't quite get the warm feelings of two childhood friends-to-lovers reuniting.

She was his and he was hers; they'd always each been one half of a whole.

This was a quick read but it did set the scene at Moonlight Ridge for the other two brothers to come into. There's some left to dangle story threads, the hunt is on to find out who is embezzling money from the resort and the need to revitalize the resort because it could soon be in danger of closing. Looking forward to Grey the architect and Travis the chef finding their own loves and the Holloway brothers becoming a family again.

Molly and Mack had me invested from the moment I meant each of them. Their journey to a second-chance is simply amazing, and I need answers to the mystery that will run through the next two books! I cannot wait for more!

An amazing start to a new Desire trilogy. This is a childhood sweethearts, second chance romance between Molly and Mack. I really enjoyed it and am excited to continue through the trilogy and get the romances of Mack’s brothers. I don’t want to say too much now because I’ll be moderating a panel with all three authors from the series and am so excited about it. But, I loved it. The family drama was super messy and had me on edge and I was rooting for Molly and Mack.

Harlequin Desire’s Moonlight Ridge series revolves around three adopted brothers returning to Asheville, North Carolina after their adoptive father has a life-threatening health crisis. While there, the brothers are forced to confront their past, while at the same time save their childhood home and the business their father loves. Moonlight Ridge is a three-book series, written by authors Joss Wood, Karen Booth, and Reese Ryan.

Homecoming Heartbreaker is the first book in the series. The story features eldest son Mack Holloway and his best friend/former high school sweetheart Molly Haskell. It’s been fifteen years since Mack left Asheville, Moonlight Ridge (the family’s resort business), his father, brothers, and Molly behind. Mack left without saying a word to anyone. This resulted in hard feelings between Mack, his brothers, and Molly. During the years, he has returned home for short visits but has always made sure to avoid Molly. Mack’s father Jameson’s health crisis forces him to return for an extended visit and work with Molly, who is the resort’s manager.

The attraction the two had for each other is still there, hotter and more intense than ever. Since Mack is only expected to be in town for a month, the two agree to a fling while he’s there. Things quickly escalate to the point of each wondering if there could really be a future for them. But things take a turn when Mack discovers a substantial amount of resort money has gone missing and all indications point to Molly as being the thief.

Homecoming Heartbreaker has set up the Moonlight Ridge series in a phenomenal way. In addition to this being a second chance romance, there’s an added potential seasoned romance between Jameson and a former employee, plus you have the mystery of the missing money and what’s going to happen to the resort. I can’t wait to read Best Laid Wedding Plans by Karen Booth. The story stars Mack’s younger adopted brother Grey, and Molly’s best friend and resort wedding planner Autumn Kincaid.

I quite enjoyed my first visit to Moonlight Ridge. My full review is coming...

*********
I quite enjoyed my initial visit to Moonlight Ridge with Homecoming Heartbreaker . I love the setup for the entire series and look forward to seeing how these brothers, and their dad, end up ensnared by just the right woman. ;)

Homecoming Heartbreaker focuses on Mack, the oldest Holloway brother, and Molly Haskell, the girl he left behind. With Mack's dad being ill, he's back to run the business (a luxury resort) for a while. He's determined to clear the air with Molly so they can move on, leave the past in the past, and work together amicably (she stayed on a Moonlight Ridge and is an integral part of the business.) However, Mack's willpower to stay away from Molly is tested almost immediately.

What Worked:

*Plot
I was instantly invested in the characters. I admired that Papa Holloway adopted 3 boys - all POC - and gave them love as well as taught them to love. Circumstances and certain events led these boys off track but they still love their dad. Therefore, with their dad falling ill, they're all coming back to pitch in. And if they each find love, a reason to come back together and stay? All the better.

*Characters
Mack has become a successful businessman, working in craft beer and gastro-pubs. Molly worked her way through business school and has ensured her place at Moonlight Ridge. They've had little interaction after an event forced Mack to leave 15 years ago, without an explanation, but when they're in close contact the air sizzles with their chemistry. It shouldn't be so hard to set things right with Moonlight Ridge OR between them. I enjoyed the interactions and the banter between these two as well as learning of their past together. Papa Holloway and his meddling added to the fun.

What Could Have Worked Better:

*Angst
Yep. Angst. As in, there wasn't enough of it. LOL I would have liked a bit more angst, a little more back and forth. More of a battle. Mack and Molly were so adamant they wouldn't fall back into each other's arms. Yet they did - which wasn't unexpected - but they did so rather quickly and easily.

This is the story of Molly (hotel manager) and Mack (self-made brewer and gastropub entrepreneur) and it’s a second chance/destined to be together romance with a LOT of back story and contemporary narratives.

There’s a failing and fading holiday estate; a duplicitous family; another patchwork family – basically loving but long-time torn apart; historical adoptions; secrets a plenty; scarring and jarring events from the past that need resolving; a side-bar older person romance (something this author seems to champion) and contemporary mysteries. Amongst such a heavy load, in the first half or more of the book I thought the central romance was crowded out and didn’t pack much attention; but that changed during the final third and I became invested in M&M (there’s a few nicknames in this one) finding their HEA. The characterisations of our leads differed – I think Molly was roundly drawn, but Mack was a little one-dimensional, but still appealing enough.

This book is the first in a series of 3 inter-connected books and did a great job of setting lots of scenes and storylines up. What’s great about this author is that she’s able to write emotion and physical intimacy but is also an efficient writer who can pack significant amounts of characters and storylines into books too; so, this is a great set up for the other 2 in the series and I’m curious to read them.

This was a rollercoaster of a story with a great deal of the usual emotional jeopardy supplemented by cliff-hangar storylines that also pull the reader along.

4 1/2 STARS!

A decadent kickoff to the Moonlight Ridge trilogy! In HOMECOMING HEARTBREAKER Joss Wood lays the groundwork for reconnecting three estranged brothers at a time when their family needs to band together the most. To accomplish this, oldest brother Mack will have to come face to face with the love of his life that he walked out on years ago. The drama is high, the passion is undeniable and the warmth and heart coming off of this family is super satisfying. I'm looking forward to the the next brother already!

Mack is an easily redeemable character who has a heart of gold and carries the burden of the world on his shoulders. Seeing him get his happily ever after is very rewarding.

Molly is a sweetheart that has been dealt more than one bad hand in life, but through it all she's been steadfastly upbeat and ready to take on the world to be loyal to her core belief.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys seeing a shattered family reconnect as each sibling takes the walk towards their forever love.

I am super excited to read the three books in this trilogy, written by three talented authors. Mack Holloway has returned to Moonlight Ridge to care for Jameson, his father, who owns a resort. Due to a family rift, he has not been home in years. When Mack left, he also left the love of his life, Molly Haskell. He skipped out on her without letting her know the reason. Molly is shaken at Mack's return and she has a secret that could change her association with his family forever.

First off, establishing the foundation for a trilogy is not an easy feat. You have to be able to blend the current story with past history and weave in threads for upcoming books. Joss Wood did that! I love second chance stories. I didn't get fully how the incident truly severed the family bond but it made me intrigued to read the second book. I am almost done with book 2.

Second, as usual, Harlequin does not disappoint when it comes to its book covers. All the covers are hot and make you want to dig into the book.

Content notes:

This is the first in a new connected trilogy by three Harlequin authors. I originally requested it for the Reese Ryan book (the last in the trilogy) but was intrigued that this first one was a second chance romance, one of my favorite tropes.

Mack and Molly were instant friends from the moment he arrived at Moonlight Ridge when he was eight, and it was perhaps inevitable that their relationship evolved into a romance. But after an accident that left one of his adoptive brothers in the hospital, Mack left without a word and never looked back. When his adoptive father, Jameson, ends up in the hospital, Mack works out a roster with his brothers to help take care of the hotel while he recovers – even if it means having to work with Molly again, who basically runs the hotel. Molly isn’t particularly looking forward to seeing Mack again either, but she owes Jameson, and out of respect and love for him, she’ll bury her hurt. It’s not long, though, before sparks are flying between them again. Is this their chance to make their relationship work? Or will it only lead to another heartbreak for both of them?

“Let me just say this, Mack, and then, hopefully, we can move on. I missed my boyfriend, but God, I mourned my best friend. And you will never, ever get the chance to hurt me like that again.”

Molly’s been running the majority of the hotel business for years, so she’s hurt that Jameson feels it’s necessary to bring his sons in to help run the business. But she’s hopeful that it’ll mean she’ll get the OK to finally implement some of the updates that the hotel desperately needs to stay afloat. Molly was easy to like as a character, strong but still trying to figure out how to deal with her incredibly toxic family, who feel entitled to her money. Molly’s been holding on to guilt over actions she took as a teen, and while she’d finally worked up the courage to confess to Jameson, certain that it’ll irrevocably damage their relationship, he unfortunately fell ill before she had the chance. Now her awful family is blackmailing her with that information. Having Mack back doesn’t make it any better, as even though she’s still angry at him for how he left, she doesn’t want to disappoint him either.

“Would you like to come work for me?” Mack asked, only half joking.
“We’d spend all our time arguing or—” Molly snapped her teeth together and blushed. Mack grinned, knowing what she was about to say.
“We’d either argue or get naked,” Mack told her. He smiled before speaking again. “I have little appetite for the first and a great deal for the second.”

For his part, Mack’s entire life is shaped around not acting like his deadbeat biological father, who belittled him and blamed him for the death of his mother until the day he abandoned him. His adoptive father, Jameson, means everything to him, and he’ll put up with pretty much anything to make sure he’s safe and well taken care of. Mack prizes control above all else, and has no room in his life for unpredictable things like feelings, especially love. He knows he treated Molly badly by basically running away, but in his mind he was protecting himself, and also protecting her and his family. He feels like he doesn’t deserve them. He almost immediately gets off on the wrong foot with her again, and it takes time for him to accept and forgive himself for what he did – the same applies to Molly as well. That’s the lovely thing about their relationship, that they’re able to give each other absolution and help each other find a place of forgiveness and acceptance. Now, that doesn’t mean they can make the same mistakes again….

The writing was lovely, especially their banter, though I did think Mack and Molly got back together a little too easily. There’s a good deal of angst around their respective issues, and I thought the resolution – especially how Molly called Mack on his nonsense – was excellent. Being the first book in a series, there’s obviously a lot of setup for the later books, and I thought it was interwoven well. In particular, there’s a mystery involving the hotel that I was particularly interested in.

Overall, this is a fun book and a good first entry in this series. I look forward to reading the rest!

Excellent second chance romance and start to the new series. Jameson Holloway, owner of the Moonlight Ridge resort, adopted three boys when they were young. Mack, Grey, and Travis were as close as brothers could be until a devastating accident split them apart. Mack blamed himself, and unable to face the guilt, left home, family, and girlfriend without a word of explanation. Mack and Molly were best friends from the time he was eight years old, their friendship turning to romance when they were teens. Molly was brokenhearted at his desertion.

Fifteen years later, all three sons rarely return to Moonlight Ridge, especially at the same time. But when they receive word that Jameson is ill and must give up his work for at least six months, they agree to return home to help. Each agrees to a two-month stint, with Mack taking the first shift. Mack's reluctance is immediately evident as he faces the memories of the accident and his poor treatment of Molly. Weary of the estrangement with his brothers, Mack vows to find a way to mend fences with them. He also knows that Molly deserves an explanation and an apology.

Molly has always been a part of Moonlight Ridge. Her father was the resort's CFO until he was caught embezzling money but died before he could be prosecuted. After the pain of losing Mack, Molly put herself through school and returned to work at Moonlight Ridge, eventually becoming the manager. Her selfish, manipulative, and lazy mother and two older brothers leech off Molly whenever they can, using a youthful mistake she made to blackmail her into cooperating. Molly thinks of Jameson as a father and will do anything for him, including work with Mack - but she doesn't have to like it.

The first meeting between Mack and Molly was as painful and awkward as each expected. Molly's hurt and anger over Mack's departure burns as hot now as it did fifteen years earlier. They both believe they are over each other, but the sparks that flare between them prove otherwise. As Mack and Molly work together to save the struggling resort, those sparks continue to grow. Though they can't resist giving in to the attraction, both are wary of the intensity. Mack prides himself on the tight control he keeps on his emotions, but that control falls apart when he's around Molly. At the same time, Molly resists her growing feelings for him, unwilling to trust that he won't walk away as he did before.

Complicating the growing feelings for each other, Mack and Molly must deal with running the resort. There are a few clashes between them when their leadership styles differ, but mostly they agree on what must be done. There are a couple of great scenes where Mack's protectiveness kicks in on the job, and it's easy to see that he's struggling with his feelings. When Molly's family starts in on her again, Mack manages to break through Molly's walls and get the whole story. I loved his support of her and his determination to help her break free. But when money turns up missing, Molly's past turns the spotlight on her. Mack makes a boneheaded move in his need for control, although his intentions are good. Understandably hurt and angry, Molly makes her displeasure known and walks away from Mack.

Though he realizes right away how badly he screwed up, a crisis with Jameson delays his chance to make things right. I loved the scene in his hospital room as Molly discovers her secret wasn't so secret after all. That revelation resulted in a satisfying confrontation between Molly and her family, with an added twist from Mack. Mack and Molly finally put their pasts behind them in an emotional reconciliation scene.

There are a few things that look like they continue through the series. First, the missing money and where it went remains unresolved. I look forward to seeing where that goes. Jameson, who drove multiple nurses away during the first part of his recovery, now has his former housekeeper riding herd on him. Jameson and Giada's interactions are a hoot, especially when it comes to his cigars. Last is the estrangement between the three brothers. There was some progress between Mack and Grey by the end of the book, but it seems that Travis is still holding out. I can't wait to see how things work out with them.

3.5 stars I have a feeling that I'm going to like this trilogy. I did enjoy Homecoming Heartbreaker even though the heroine did annoy me on occasion.

This series revolves around the three Holloway brothers. The three were all adopted from foster care by Jameson Holloway, a Black entrepreneur who runs Moonlight Ridge, a beautiful resort in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. This novel is a classic "second chance at love" story. Mack Holloway has come back to Moonlight Ridge to help operate the resort while his father recovers from medical scare.

We learn early on that Mack had left at age 18 after getting into an auto accident with his brothers. The aftermath of the crash drove a rift between the brothers and as the driver, Mack has struggled with guilt ever since. Unable to handle anything that even resembles losing control, he left Asheville and has established himself as a successful businessman in his own right.

By returning to Moonlight Ridge, Mack find himself working day to day with his first love, Molly Haskell, now the manager of the resort. There is definitely still chemistry between these two, but the fact that Mack abruptly left with no explanation to Molly has created a distance between them that makes it (understandably) hard for her to trust him.

While I enjoyed seeing Mack and Molly find their way back to each other, this story did get bogged down in a fair amount of worldbuilding. Since it's first in the trilogy, the author had to tell lots of backstory and create the world for these characters to move in. Some of that happens seamlessly, but there is a fair amount of telling, as opposed to showing. At times that did pull me out of the story.

In addition, while I rather liked Mack, it took me longer to warm to Molly. She's obviously devoted to the resort, but her blind spots regarding her feckless, dishonest relatives and her inability to stand up to their obvious grifting was incredibly frustrating to read. I could understand her feeling guilty about something stupid she did in high school, but letting her family weaponize it against her 15 years later got to be a bit much.

However, I still enjoyed the story and I plan to read the rest of the trilogy. I want to see how things shake out on Moonlight Ridge - and there's a secondary romance I have my eyes on.

3.5 stars. Homecoming Heartbreaker is the first in the multi-author Harlequin Desire series, Moonlight Ridge, this one being by Joss Wood. It sets up a pretty unique premise, with a racially diverse foster family involved in managing a resort.

The romance was pretty hot, with there being lingering tensions due to Mack and Molly’s previous relationship and how things ended before. I was a bit frustrated with him for refusing to confront the past, and felt for her, but was ultimately happy with where they ended up.

I did feel a bit conflicted with the overall external “arc” of the series as it was set up here. The premise in itself is well-intentioned, but there are a lot of implications made that either could have been fleshed out or thought through a bit more. I can appreciate Joss Wood for attempting to stay in her lane and keeping this fairly light, but I couldn’t help but question whether Mack in particular had ever felt conflicting feelings as a transracial adoptee (although his adoptive father being Black adds a different dimension to the dynamic than you typically see in most narratives on the topic). And while I can appreciate the “celebrate our differences/skin color is irrelevant” belief in theory, it still felt weird, given that wealth doesn’t guarantee immunity from bigotry and that you need to acknowledge those differences to celebrate them.

I am looking forward to the next books to see what the other two authors (Karen Booth and Reese Ryan) bring to the table. And in spite of my nitpicks, I did enjoy this quite a bit, and would recommend this as a fun, short, and sexy read to pick up when you need a palate cleanser.

It’s the perfect time for second chances when Mack Holloway returns home to take care of his father and the upscale vacation resort his father owns, putting him in touching distance of manager Molly Haskell – the only woman he’s ever loved, and the woman he chose to leave behind…

When you pick up Homecoming Heartbreaker, you’re in for an adventure. The first of a trilogy set around the Moonlight Ridge resort – formerly an escape for the rich and famous, but somewhat in need of an update as the story opens—the book is a great introduction to the world, characters, and overarching storylines of the trilogy. Mack and Molly’s history is intense, and both have scars and regrets, and as they rediscover each other and fall back in love with each other, it’s impossible to not fall in love with them along the way. Their romance is twined in a few external plot elements and other, series-related, developing relationships, which just deepen the story. The story works as a Desire novel, as a series opener, and as a romance, and is all-around a solid, fun, emotionally engaging read. I loved visiting with Mack and Molly and hope to see more of them in the remaining books in the trilogy. The Moonlight Ridge series is definitely one Desire readers should take a look at, and Homecoming Heartbreaker is a great read to start things off!

Homecoming Heartbreaker is the first of the Moonlight Ridge series of interconnected books about the Holloways that flows well and will draw you in with diverse characters and a family dynamic.

Jameson Holloway adopted three young boys and raised them at Moonlight Ridge, his resort in North Carolina. The family was later ripped apart by tragedy, and each son went his separate way.

It's been 15 years since they have been back home to Moonlight Ridge. The only thing bringing them back is a critical health emergency with Jameson. Each commits to helping take care of the resort while Jameson recuperates.

Mack Holloway is the oldest and the first to return. He has become a very successful businessman who values control over every aspect of his life. He lost control once, and the tragedy happened.

Molly Haskell is the manager of the resort and had a previous relationship with Mack. She has family issues, has found a surrogate father in Jameson, and will do anything to keep Moonlight Ridge running.

The book can be read and enjoyed on its own but leaves a cliffhanger of sorts regarding who has been stealing from the resort, which will be explored in the installments of the series focusing on the remaining two brothers, Grey and Travis. I hope we also get to see more of the relationship between Jameson and Giada.

I enjoyed that Molly, 32, had met Mack, 33, when they were young, and this was their second chance after Mack left her suddenly. Mack was one of three foster brothers adopted by Jameson. The three brothers were in an accident when they were teenagers, and it tore them apart for years. I liked that Mack had a South Korean biological father, and the cover showed that Mack and Molly made an attractive couple.

Mack was afraid of losing control and falling for Molly again was a threat to everything he had done since the fallout from the accident. I liked Molly, who was struggling with keeping her confession from Jameson, who she worked for. It kept her tied to her dysfunctional family, and that felt realistic and relatable. Her family was truly despicable.

There was the issue of who was embezzling, the details of the accident, and getting Grey and Travis to return to the Moonlight Ridge. I liked the start of the side romance with Giada and Jameson.

Mack and Molly heated up in some steamy, sexy scenes! Their banter, awkwardness after seeing each other after so many years, Molly's secret about the money she took to help her family, and Mack stating that he was leaving after helping out, kept the story fresh and the drama going.

Book 1 was so good that I was excited to read the rest of the series which also delivered satisfaction.

It was an enjoyable read and my first by this author. I will definitely look for other books by her since this one was so good.

This is book one in The Moonlight Ridge Series and it is Mack and Molly's story and omg what a great start to a new series. Mack and Molly have a past history together that didn't end very well and now Mack is back home because of his father's illness and he will also have to face her again which he was not really looking forward to. I absolutely loved this book with all its twists and turns along the way and I couldn't put it down as the characters and storyline pulled you in right from the start and it was a real page turner and so addictive. This is a second chance romance that takes you on Molly and Mack's journey but will they get a happy ending this time of are they destined to be apart especially how Mack broke Molly's heart when he just left her year's ago and of course Molly has her own secrets that she needs to keep but with the connection and chemistry between them still as strong as ever will it work out for them when all is revealed. How's Wood is an amazing author and writer and I definitely recommend you read this book and others by her and you will not be disappointed as she certainly knows how to keep her reader's attention and on the edge of their seats.

This is book one in the “Moonlight Ridge” series. Jameson is a resort owner and adopted three young boys Mack, Grey and Travis who really needed him. Molly’s dad worked for the resort and Jameson caught him stealing money from him and fired him. Mack and Molly were best friends and later boyfriend and girlfriend. Mack and his brothers were very close until a truck accident happened while Mack was driving. The brothers were driving in the rain and the road was muddy and they arguing while trying to locate Travis’ girlfriend.

The brothers and Molly have apart for over 15 teen years and a brain injury to their father Jameson brings them back home. Mack is the oldest and returns home first and is reunited with the love of his life Molly. Molly wants answers why Mack left and didn’t inform her. Molly is now the resort manager and she and Mack are working together to keep Jameson’s stress level down and to get the resort back to making money. Someone has been stilling money from the resort and Mack, Molly, Grey and Travis must find the culprit even though the brothers think that Molly is the one that has been taking the money until Mack sets them straight.

This is an awesome read, fast read, page turner, great characters, family drama, a secret, missing funds making this a great book. Kudos to Joss for another great book.

This book introduces us to the intriguing premise behind the series, and I was immediately tangled up in their lives. I’m a sucker for a good second chance, plus these two need a second chance with themselves almost as badly as they need one with each other. Both Mack and Molly are punishing themselves for situations that were out of their control; shouldering the blame for things that weren’t entirely theirs to own. They’re also still dealing with the overwhelming feelings for one another that caused Mack to run in the first place. It was easy to see why this pair had taken ownership of all that guilt, but it hurt my heart that it had kept them from being happy for so long. I loved seeing them get their happy ever after, I just thought it would take a bit more effort for them to negotiate their resolution. There are still a few unanswered questions that I’m looking forward to finding out the answers to in the future books of the series.

Home is where your heart should always be!!
Joss Wood delivers a wonderful heartfelt return home story. In the first of the series, we meet Mack and Molly. They've been in love with each other since they were kids but when tragedy struck, Mack didn't know what to do so he ran. Molly stayed behind. Not because she was hoping he'd come home but because it was home. Mack and his 2 adopted brothers have come home to care for Dad, Jameson, when he suffers a health scare and learn there's more of an issue than just his health. Molly runs Jameson's resort and loves him like a father but her heart belonged to Mack first. From their rocky reintroduction to the way learn they can't live without each other and start working together to save Moonlight Ridge, they realize that their love never died and just needs some extra TLC. This story pulled at my heartstrings and was a wonderful read. I can't wait for the next 2 in the series.

I was excited to start a new series by three great authors and with such diverse people in the stories and set in North Carolina. The series starts with the oldest brother and a second-chance romance with his first love. My heart was breaking for Molly not only because the love of her life left her, but she lost her best friend and had to have the worst family ever. It was further complicated by Mack thinking he was doing the right thing by leaving his love and best friend, and his family so many years ago. It was a gripping journey to see them find each other again, ditch family and reunite with others. But there’s a plus because of a romance involving an older couple and a mystery that continues into the other books. All the talk of the accounting problems made me twitch being an accountant so I really hope they get that resolved in the next book.
All thoughts and opinions are my own. Repost of my original review on Amazon.com.

Mack and Molly's Second Chance ? . . .

Mack Holloway had to return for a couple months to Moonlight Ridge to care for his foster dad, Jameson Holloway, recently released from critical care after a brain episode. He also needs to save his family’s once-luxurious inn and resort which has been a major stress factor on his dad, so he has to assume the burden for now.

Being back after 15 years still made him think of the accident where he lost control of the truck and it changed his life. He will have to face his past. Molly Haskell was the woman he left without a word, now the current resort manager, so he would have to see her. He never told her what drove him away, and he’s not ready to tell her now. He doesn’t know that Molly also has secrets that could be devastating.

Because they still loved each other, old feelings flame up again. Will they take this opportunity to fix their broken relationship? Or will they walk away and lose something very special?

Four and a half stars

Homecoming Heartbreaker by Joss Wood is the first in the Moonlight Ridge multiauthor trilogy from Harlequin Desire.

Mack Holloway has stayed away from Asheville, North Carolina, for a decade and a half, allowing his feelings of guilt to keep him from his family and first love. Molly Haskell is now manager of the Moonlight Ridge resort, working with charismatic owner Jameson Holloway. When Jameson is felled by a serious health crisis, his sons determine to return home to help the family’s business through the interim.

Joss Wood’s writing is vivid and evocative. Mack and Molly’s youthful feelings for each other haven’t faded with time and separation. Ms Wood brings their feelings and worries to life, and we see how much pain they carry as well as how much passion is ready to overflow with the slightest encouragement.

Homecoming Heartbreaker is a terrific read, and a great start to this trilogy!

Will bring you back for more.

This was a fun, light Harlequin story for their steamy Desire imprint. It has been a while since I read much imprint novella romance. Some series romance can feel rather cookie-cutter but this story felt very fresh and not at all formulaic.

I was swept up into the story with the multiple plot lines and at least one unresolved question carrying over into the remaining 2 books to this series. I am definitely going to be on the lookout for the next two stories to find out more about the other two adopted sons of Jamison Halloway.

I also want to see how he continues to recover from his aneurysm surgery, and how his former housekeeper turned nursing aide spars with him, never letting Jamison get away with not following the doctor's advice.

Intriguing start to a new multi-author series

Mack and Molly were childhood best friends and first everything’s until he fled after a terrible car accident. Now all grown up and determined to help the father figure they both love, they have put the past aside or embrace that their love was always meant to be.

I usually love a second chance romance but there was just something flat about this one. His reasons for leaving were a little too hollow for me. I also didn’t love some of the gender stereotypes (she was hardwired to find the best guy to have kids with and he wasn’t allowed to show emotion other than anger etc.) presented throughout.

I do love the idea of an overarching mystery to be solved in the series and am really looking forward to the next two books, both of which are by authors that I’ve really enjoyed in the past.

This is the first book in the Moonlight Ridge series, a new multi-author series from Harlequin Desire. I very much enjoyed this introduction to the series, which is about three brothers. First up is Mack and Molly, his childhood best friend and first love. Mack left Molly behind years ago after a tragic accident and hasn't seen her in 15 years. He, and his brothers, are coming together after their father falls ill and working to keep the hotel running. This puts him back in the path of Molly, whom he left without a word. I not only enjoyed the love story between Mack and Molly, but also the family dynamics and the relationship between the three brothers and their adoptive father and look forward to the rest of the series! This is a sweet second chance, forced proximity romance.

Moonlight Ridge is a series and Homecoming Heartbreaker is the first in the series. Mack left not only his home but he also left Molly, the woman who loved him and who he loved behind. Despite their past history, his father's illness and their need to work together to work on saving his father's failing business makes for an emotionally intense second chance story for this pair. Just as his reasons for leaving were somewhat unknown by those he left, she too has secrets kept when he returns. It is good to read this couple working their way forward while it also being set up for the next story in the series by a bit of cliff hanger.

One devastating evening was all it took for Mac to leave town, fracture his relationship with his brothers and break the heart of his best friend Molly. It will be years before he returns, and it will only be for one month as he helps to keep his father’s resort viable, but it will also mean working with the woman he loved and left.

Molly was devastated when Mac left not only because they fell in love as teenagers but that he was also her best friend. She isn’t about to just forgive and forget but between his return, complications at the resort and a secret that she can no longer keep she has her hands full.

I really enjoyed seeing Mac and Molly get their second chance and I am looking forward to the stories about his brothers.

Mack and Molly aka M&M could have been so much more than friends but one car accident changed everything not only for them but also for the Holloway family, now though 15 years later they have to work together after Mack's Dad Jameson has a medical event. I loved how not only do we see Mack and Molly struggle with their still undeniable attraction to each other but also as we get to know then we also get to know Jameson and see his relationship with someone from the past bloom too. This has plenty of anger, regret, love, forgiveness as well as learning what family really means and getting a second chance at love. I can not wait to read the next book and see what happens between Grey and Autumn!!

Homecoming Heartbreaker by Joss Wood is a fantastic second chance romance.

Ms. Wood writes with such passion you can’t help but feel every emotion Molly feels. As she struggles with her mounting family and work responsibilities, Molly also has to deal with the feelings that are brought up when she’s forced to work with her exboyfriend. Mack left Molly behind once before without a goodbye and even when I wanted to dislike him a little for it, he was very romantic when he tried and showed great personal growth.

There’s some past trauma, some drama, a little heat and a HEA.
This is the first book in the Moonlight Ridge three book series. Briefly meeting the other two main characters I am excited to see how their stories pan out!
