The legendary pianist, Bill Evans, contributed a great deal to the art of jazz piano. In this book, Jack Reilly, looks at Evan’s approach to the harmony, by taking a look at several tunes and breaking them down for analysis.
It should be noted that this short book was originally a collection of articles, so the “flow” of the book isn’t quite a linear as one would like, in terms of building upon tightly integrated concepts.
The tunes analyzed include: “Peri’s Scope”, “Time Remembered”, “Funny Man”, “I Should Care”, “I Fall in Love Too Easily”, “Twelve Tone Tune”, “How Deep is the Ocean” and “B Minor Waltz”.
Each song features multiple examples, as well as an “overview” of the harmonic form. Specific harmonic concepts are analyzed at the appropriate measure. Reilly does a decent job at presenting his analysis and provides a great deal of useful information.
Although the book is short, there is a ton of information to absorb, and you will come away with a better understanding of Evan’s harmonic approach.
