Hearing the disbelief from my best friend's mouth makes the events of my failed date sting that much more.
I would like to make it known, I have a lot more swagger than what it seems. I don't normally ask a girl out, have her fail to recognize it's a date, and then give me a high five--as if I'm her wingman--and take off with someone else.
No. Normally I'm the one taking the girl home but with Stella, it's been one failed attempt after another and frankly, I'm done trying.
But thanks to my best friend getting married in Hawaii right before the school year starts, I'm stuck on a tropical island, watching Stella parade around in what she claims is a bathing suit.
Unfortunately, that's not the worst of it, just the tip of the iceberg. Because what I think is going to be a relaxing vacation, avoiding the one girl I can't seem to make it work with, has turned into a spectacle of being recruited as Stella's doting fake fiancé so she can save face with an old "friend" from high school.
Now I'm navigating through purgatory while trying not to get turned on by the way she holds my hand or kisses my jaw. It's all fake, that's what I keep telling myself, even though it feels entirely too real.
Note from author: This book is a smattering of tropes: Enemies to lovers, turned friends to lovers, and also coworkers to lovers. Not to mention, a fake fiancé romance that takes place in Maui and Chicago. Lots of heat--a balcony scene that will make you blush--absurdly funny pranks, best supporting cast, a surprise "mom" you'll never see coming, and a grumbly guss of a hero who can't stop pining after his girl. Enjoy!
When I was in high school I occasionally read books but was consumed by other teenage things so I didn't take the time to appreciate a good book on a cloudy day, wrapped up in a blanket on the couch. It wasn't until I received a Kindle for Christmas one year that my world completely flipped upside down. When looking for books I came across the Contemporary Romance genre and was sold and I haven't turned back since.
You can either find my head buried in my Kindle, listening to inspiring heart ripping music or typing away on the computer twisting and turning the lives of my characters while driving my readers crazy with anticipation.
I currently reside in beautiful Colorado Springs where the sun is always shining and there is a trail waiting to be hiked on every corner. I share a lovely and warm home with the love of my life and my five, four-legged children.
After reading ‘See Me After Class’ last year, I couldn’t wait to get more of these teachers, specifically Romeo and Stella. I was so excited when I saw they were getting their own book. This had such a hilarious fake dating aspect, but was also a friends to lovers story with a lot of heart.
Stella and Brock ‘Romeo’ Romero have been coworkers for a while, but they’ve also been good friends. There has been a rift in their friendship as of late, as Romeo has feelings for Stella and she’s very… dense about it. Now they’re in Hawaii for their best friends wedding and they are thrown together in this wild fake dating arrangement when Stella finds out there high school nemesis is now her father’s fiancé.
Oh my goodness, the antics Stella pulled in Hawaii were so hilarious. There was some great banter between these two characters but also a lot of push and pull, miscommunication, and angst. There were also lots of laughs and steam.
Meghan Quinn has this way about writing characters I absolutely love, but also want to slap silly at times. I loved Romeo and most of the time, aside from his brooding/lack of communication he was amazing. But Stella… that girl was clueless. I’m thankful she came around at the end but there were moments she drove me mad.
This story was light and fun at times, but also had some emotional and heavier moments. I love Meghan Quinn’s writing, characters, and comedy. She writes some of the best and most fun rom-coms. If you’re looking for a book that will make you laugh and has a decent bit of angst, pick this one up!
WOWOWOW, okay i loved this book. I’ve never read anything from Meghan Quinn before and this was such a fun and addictive read for me. I laughed SOOO MUCH. And I was so so thoroughly invested in Stella and Brock. I was literally giddy for them 100% of the way through and I knew I was going to love the book just a few chapters in.
I will admit that there’s a ton of miscommunication between them and a lot of avoidance, and while it could be a little frustrating, I wouldn’t say that it took the enjoyment out of the book. There’s so much cute and flirty banter in here and none of them fell flat.
Let me just say how much I love Keiko’s character!! She’s just so real and unassuming and I literally laughed at all of her dialogues. I thought the friendship dynamics were good, not 100% perfect, but I didn’t find any issue with them large enough to turn me off.
AND THIS WAS SPICY (like average spice, 3 🌶) AND I WAS SO PLEASED TO FIND OUT IT WAS SPICY. It’s not that I didn’t think it wouldn’t be?! but I also didn’t really go into it expecting spice??
The synopsis hooked me and a fake dating trope set in Maui is enough to drive me forward. My cheeks literally hurt from grinning so much and every single step they took in the right direction together had me screaming into my pillow in victory for them.
I went tab crazy on this book, even going so far as having 3 tabs in a single page (this is why I used to only dogear, ITS SO MUCH CHEAPER LMAO 😂)
100% enjoyed it—such a light and fun read for me and every single time I put the book down, I was basically forced to.
What really bothering me about this book is the female BFF. I know Miss Quinn is trying to be funny and giving her readers a tight, supporting, funny female BFF. But I have to say Cora is way off the line.
And Cora really puts me off. How she demanded to see or hear something very private is just.... disgusting. And I can not believe that Stella is OK sharing something private with Cora.
Earn Your Extra Credit have all the fun, flirty banter. I wish I can like this book more.
Okay, so I think I’m okay to review now LOL If you see the status update I did while reading this ARC weeks ago, you’ll understand a bit better why I’ve waited.
This world that Meghan created with this group of friends is my definition of JOY. I’m already into my third reading of See Me After Class, the previous book in this series that’s not really marked as a series, but the group of friends are all in each other’s books so there’s that. And I want to be clear and say that even tho some of the choices that Meghan made in the storyline of Earn Your Extra Credit sucked a whole bunch of joy right out of me, Stella and Brock themselves did not. They only sucked a little bit of it LOL That may sound ridiculous, but it is what it is.
I was frustrated you guys. That’s the best way I can think to describe my experience. So much so that I had to walk away for a good bit of time before I came back to finish. First, I felt a bit lost with what was happening because I honestly did not understand Brock’s behavior towards Stella. The experience that caused his animosity towards her wasn’t in the book. I wasn’t there for it and I felt cheated because that experience was so monumental in Brock’s mind that he allowed it to flip his entire friendship with Stella just like that *snaps fingers* And this plot point is delivered to us at the very beginning of the book, so I never had a chance to feel joy before joy was snatched away! *cries*
And then there’s the extra branches in the book that move away from Brock and Stella journey with each other. Their story already had enough hurdles to jump and blast thru to get them to a romantic stage in my opinion. Adding layers of strife and drama to an already dramatic situation did not sit well with me. That was the biggest culprit in the joy sucking debacle for me. So yeah, frustrated. *sigh*
I’m going to leave you with this … This book didn’t hit the mark for me, but it might hit it for you. Meghan is a talented storyteller. The world this book lives in is fantastically joyous and the camaraderie amongst all peoples in this world is hilarious and JOY. Do with that info what you will :)
The first draft of this review included a lot of shouty CAPS, frustrated ramblings, and general non-sensical gripes about the book. Because this couple is endlessly frustrating. BUT... there's also a whole lot of awesome. I loved the first 40% very, very much. Like, HOLY CHEMISTRY, wow that's some serious sexual tension much. If you've read See Me After Class, then you might have an idea of what you're getting yourself into. This series seems to be pushing the limits on how much sexual tension there can be before it SNAPS, and that's absolutely one of the best parts of this book. The banter, the chemistry, the humor, and the playfulness - they make the first half something really special. The miscommunication? Is what makes this such a frustrating read.
The story follows Brock "Romeo" and Stella, two teachers who have become close friends while working together. Brock has been crushing on Stella for longer than he cares to admit, but she seems completely oblivious to his feelings... not that he's ever revealed them to her. The one time Brock tried to get out of the friend zone, their "date" went off the rails, and now he does everything he can to avoid Stella. But when they're forced to spend time together at mutual friends' destination wedding, that becomes impossible. And when Stella ropes Brock into pretending to be her fiancé, the lines between friends and lovers get crossed. But does that mean the same thing to Stella as it does to Brock?
I loved Brock. Call him Romeo if you want; the name suits him in that he is completely devoted to the one girl who is sure to bring him nothing but trouble. He was an unexpected sweet, swoony surprise, with an alpha side that came out at just the right moments. WOW, did that alpha side come out sometimes. At other times, Brock's frustration was palpable, and it bled off the page so much that it transferred to me. He could've saved himself a lot of trouble by having a simple conversation, but I still loved the guy. Stella... I started out liking Stella, but she's what threatened to tank this love story for me. Neither Brock nor Stella is any good at communicating, and while that's acknowledged in the book, it was difficult to handle at times. Based on the first half of the book, I really thought this was going to be an easy 5-star rating for me, but that just wasn't the case. I still liked it - and I loved a lot of it - but... I also kinda wanted to shake some sense into these two. If you're in the mood for a tense, STEAMY read that will put you through every emotion, then this is still a solid story. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this steamy rom com.
My Rating: 4.5 stars Genre Friends-to-Enemies-to-Lovers Romance | Fake Relationship
Meghan Quinn has been one of my favorite authors for YEARS because she consistently delivers romance books that will sweep you off your feet. That’s no different with Earn Your Extra Credit. Stella and Romeo are hilarious together! Their chemistry is undeniable to us readers even though it takes them quite a while to recognize it themselves. The way they interact with one another is a bit unpredictable (both are hiding/dealing with some of their own issues), but it felt raw and real. And the ending? Quite frankly it’s beautiful.
If you’re looking for a laugh out loud romantic comedy that has both realism and sexy scenes that will leave you breathless then this is the book for you. It’s not necessary to read See Me After Class first but I strongly recommend it so that you don’t get the spoilers from previous couples (yes, they play a BIG role in this one).

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞
● Despite the hot and cold relationship between Romeo and Stella they are absolutely perfect together. It takes a little while to see it but when you get there it’s obvious!
● This book is FUNNY. Romantic comedies are my favorite types of books and Meghan slays the humor every time. I don’t know where she comes up with this stuff (the “glue incident” and the “bubbles in the water” prank) but if she keeps it coming, I’ll be a fan for life!
● The secondary characters play a big role in this book and seeing them again made me super happy! I love Keiko, Arlo, Greer, and Cora and having them play a substantial role in this novel made it even better!
𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞
● I think the only thing that put me off was how mean Romeo could be. There were a few things he did/said that made me cringe and at some points I stopped liking him! However, Meghan also made it clear WHY Romeo was acting the way he did and I ended up forgiving his actions.
Meh. Not my favorite from this author. I was kinda bored and MC's were a little too hot & cold for me. This is technically a standalone but there was no quick backstory on anything so I was confused at times since I haven't read the book prior to this.
Meghan Quinn adds another funny, sexy, and charming novel to her collection with this tale of two teachers, Brock Romero and Stella Garcia, who despite having a perfect friendship and the potential for more, just can’t figure it out.
★ Plot: In Earn Your Extra Credit Brock “Romeo” Romero, ex-MLB player turned PE teacher has been pining after Stella, the Spanish teacher at Forest Heights high school, for a while. He even asked her out on a date after which she left with another guy. He’s all but given up and their once incredible friendship is strained and awkward.
But when their best friends take them on a two-week destination wedding getaway to Hawaii and Stella asks him to be his fake fiancée to save face in front of her father and soon-to-be step-mother, sparks ignite between the two. How can he survive all the kisses, hand holding, and fake his feelings for her when it’s exactly what he wants?
★ Hero: The “Romeo” moniker suits him perfectly because he’s totally infatuated with a woman who’s likely to give him heartache. He’s sweet and very much alpha whose unrequited love at times broke my heart, but others had me wanting to push him to tell Stella the truth about his feelings.
★ Heroine: Stella is really funny and witty, but ultimately a bit wishy-washy for my taste. And their lack of communication was a bit too much. If it weren’t for the awesome supporting characters who not only made me laugh hysterically (Keeks in particular), I don’t know what these two would’ve done if left to their own devices.
★ Sexiness: There was absolutely NO lack a steam between these two. On the contrary, they burned up the pages with their pulse pumping chemistry.
★ Facts:Earn Your Extra Credit is a standalone rom-com by Meghan Quinn. It is told from both points of view and has a happy ending. Genre: rom-com Trope: fake fiancé | teacher romance | enemies to lovers
why this is not marked as a part of a series? yes, it is standalone but also connected to See Me After Class
Meghan Quinn is a hit or miss for me..so extreme that I am either it is going to be a DNF or five-star read. I guess that is why I'm still reading her books looking for that elusive five-star read. I enjoyed this one. Sure there were parts where the heroine's and hero's evasiveness was annoying.. Cora and Arlo must be the most exasperating siblings. Overall, I like this book. It was fun.
Romeo and Stella teach at the same school together, crushing on each other and terrific friends. When they attend their mutual friend's wedding events, Stella and Romeo are forced to fake date during the events. Talk about funny antics, sexy times, and an emotional rollercoaster ride.

Romeo, Romeo,Romeo…has me lust struck😍He’s so freaking dirty in all the best ways;) I could still smack him & Stella at times though lol. Gah if they would’ve just said what they were both feeling…sigh…but then we wouldn’t have their seriously fun & super sexy story:)
I love this whole group of friends. They are so awesome together…Seriously y’all…Keiko strikes again 😂
Loved being able to both read and list to this story. Book two in the series it was fun to catch up with these characters again after reading See Me After Class.
I both loved and was frustrated with this pair particularly how oblivious they were to the feelings they have for each other. It was a fun escape being able to experience their adventures through the pages. The antics that Stella got up to in particular were hilarious. A delightful story and it was great reading about them finally being able to move past their differences and find each other.
There were definitely funny laugh out loud moments. I really want a book on Keiko and her boyfriend. She’s hilarious!!!!
The bromance was so entertaining.
As for the main characters themselves……Stella and Brock, communicate omg!! Every other characters pointed out their flaw and these two nut heads won’t talk about the elephant in the room. It was so annoying.
In the end, Stella did a sweet grand gesture. That was really cute.
I liked this one, I really did! Granted, I’ve been on a Meghan Quinn binge and have realized that the misunderstandings at the end of her baseball/teacher romances seem to be extremely similar but if I focus on this book ONLY, then I really did enjoy it ❤️ Meghan Quinn is great, but her books are not meant to be binge read & that’s just a fact 🤷🏻♀️
My rapid fire thoughts: • The perfect combo of tropes: best friends-to-lovers + fake fiancé + forced proximity • This book was basically The Unhoneymooners but the spicy scenes didn’t fade to black 🥵🔥 • Dual POV for the wiiin • The misunderstanding trope can suck it 🤺 • I’m such a sucker for an epic grand gesture 🥺
Absence should make the heart grow fonder. I boycotted this author for awhile because her romcoms just weren’t funny anymore. Too much forced humor and lame jokes. Good comedy really does it for me though. I have a huge film background in comedy and appreciate the good stuff that her books stopped delivering -- all that crass, OTT, forced, and potty/sex humor masquerading as good material until I barely let slip a soft chuckle. Then, this book released, and the blurb grabbed me. The first third? The funniest G.D. banter, antics and chemistry that I’d read in forever. Laughs to infinity and beyond, and I could not turn the pages fast enough.
Romeo and Stella are teacher colleagues and were besties until she misread their first date and left with another guy. He doesn’t want to talk about his crushed feelings and has avoided her ever since with snide comments and a curled lip. She has no idea what’s bothering him … and now they’re thrown together at an island paradise destination wedding vacay with a bunch of their closest friends. Trouble is, Stella’s single dad ends up at the same resort with his new squeeze – Stella’s bully ex-classmate and rains on her fun. Panicked Stella begs Romeo to pose as her fiancé to impress both of them. Bad idea. Things get -- well -- complicated very fast all around. Can hate turn to love and stick?
The heat between them had me sweaty. The nonstop hilarity charmed me senseless. The fumbling courtship had me all swoony. But, the last 2/3 left me floundering. There were too many characters hogging story attention. The thing with her dad and their past history was a yawner. The rivalry with her former bully was erratic at best. In fact, the girl’s a righteous bish and then does a complete 360 without a believable explanation for her Jekyll & Hyde change. The laughs died and all the energy got sucked out of the room before the story pancaked and I lost interest. Why? The angst was just another clichéd face plant into miscommunication with a couple of immature 30 year olds unable to communicate feelings. It was all preventable, and the author lost me once again. The end was sweet and cute once both characters stopped the cycle of self-sabotage, but by then I was long gone from my front row seat to the “why me?” pity party.
It was a lost cause as soon as the romance got sidelined by Stella’s jealous sabotage of her dad’s girlfriend in Parent Trap-styled pranks that went beyond stupid. And then that reliance on sex humor made a comeback. There were pages of filler dialogue on the way to nowhere – 4 pages of boredom about what they’d name their dogs! I didn’t even know that Romeo was rich until Chapt 13. Stella was a sad sack wallower, and Romeo closed off the minute his feelings got hurt or angry. What a pair – both have severe avoidance disease. The romance roadblocks kept covering the same ground with too much baggage and Debbie Downer Stella was stuck in the middle of it. Truly, the first 1/3 of this book was as solid and perfect as romance comedy gets, but there too many other characters and story tangents. Haven’t read the other couples’ books? You’ll be lost … 5 stars for the first 1/3.
This book started off SO good, but quickly became repetitive, childish and a little too lovey-dovey for me :/ However, I did love that it was set in Maui which is why it was the perfect read while I was on vacay in Hawaii!!
Earn Your Extra Credit features, Romeo and Stella, who readers met in See Me After Class. Don't worry, you don't need to read that one to read this one, but it definitely helps in getting a deeper connection to everyone.
I was really looking forward Romeo and Stella's book – this two have quite the interesting relationship. They have been coworkers for quite awhile and even close friends after working together for so long. They watch baseball games together and compete on the faculty league team.
At some point, things became strained between them and nothing has been the same since. Romeo and Stella, along with their other friends, are all now in Hawaii for their best friends' wedding. But that's not the only problem, they both find themselves fake dating because Stella has some point to prove.
I want to say so much more, but I hate when reviewers talk about scenes in reviews or give away plot points, accidentally. But there is a lot that goes on this on this book – growth, acceptance and moving forward.
Yea – not sure what to say about this one, to be honest. Did I enjoy the book? Yes. But, it dragged for me. Stella annoyed the hell out of me, a lot. Her antics, while entertaining, just became annoying after a bit. Romeo – the man has the patience of a saint.
It kills me to say this because I truly love Meghan, the characters she bring us and their stories. But this book was right down the middle for you. While I enjoyed it, it was not my favorite. But I am definitely in the minority on this one. I would still recommend this book to others because while it wasn't a 5 star for me, I know that other readers will enjoy it.
Getting together with the Forest Heights School crew is always a hoot. From the Ladies in Heat book club to the sexy alpha teachers this was a red hot romance. This story did not go where I thought it would and I was okay with that. It was super sexy and hilariously funny.
Brock is sinfully sexy and I loved when he lost control. Stella is smart and witty and when she lets her crazy out it brought on the laughs. Together these two fit like two puzzle pieces. It’s no surprise their friendship eased them into that combustible chemistry I mean once they got over fighting.
This book had everything you love in a Meghan Quinn rom-com and even the “grand gesture” was epic since we got to see some old favorites. I just loved everything about this book. I’d love earning some extra credit with Brock “Romeo” Romero any day.
I love him so much. He’s a sweet yet possessive alpha male that just gets me goin’.
And the premise of this book was 👌🏻 Arlo and Greer got married. HAWAII! Kelvin and Keeks being hilarious. It was perfection.
But I also was so mad with Stella and her dad and Ashley. Ugh. Her dad kind of grew on me but I still harbour some resentment ok? 😂
The ONE thing I didn’t love was I found that their “we’re just friends but I don’t wanna tell you how I feel because you don’t feel the same way” shit dragged on a tad too long.
But the ending was adorable. The baseball game. Guh.
Earn Your Extra Credit is a hilarious enemies to lovers rom-com by Meghan Quinn. The book was a joy to listen to. It was so entertaining, full of humour, heart and even a tiny bit of angst. I devoured it all at once without stopping. The narration done by Sebastian York and Erin Mallon is fantastic. They voice the characters of Brock and Stella perfectly and I love the ability they have to draw you into the story immediately.
Brock aka Romeo is a former pro baseball player, now coach at Forest Heights High School. He has been crushing on Stella for awhile now, they were even friends at one point but things have been become strained between them and now they find themselves stuck on vacation together, to attend Arlo and Greer’s wedding (from See Me After Class). This is where their relationship finally changes. It all starts with a fake relationship and grew from there. I had a hard time with Brock at first, he was so mean to Stella but at the same time I understood his frustration of being forced together on vacation and suddenly having to deal with his unrequited feelings for Stella.
These characters were equally frustrating and loveable. I found myself frustrated with them one moment, and swooning the next. Brock was harbouring some hurt feelings and Stella had some major self sabotaging ways that totally got on my nerves but the chemistry between these two makes up for some of these frustrating qualities and the end really rounds the story out and made me fall hard for them.
Ever since reading the Locker Room, Brock ‘Romeo’ Romero has intrigued me. The snippets of chemistry we got between him and Stella Garcia in See Me After Class had me waiting on the edge of my seat for their story, and it exceeded every one of my expectations. Meghan’s written another incredible book with Earn Your Extra Credit, and with every book I read by her, I honestly don’t know how she captures my heart in a different way each time.
Brock has had a crush on Stella for a long time, but when he gets the courage to ask her out, she doesn’t get the hint it’s a date, and for the first time ever, it’s looking like Romeo won’t get the girl. Dealing with his heartbreak is hard, when their best friends are getting married in Maui and the whole group is there for a two-week trip. Stella doesn’t understand why her close friendship with Brock came to such an abrupt end, so when she bumps into someone from her past, and she needs a fake fiancé, the first name that jumps into her head is Brock. Can Brock finally use this as an opportunity to show Stella that his feelings are in no way fake, or were they always destined to be just friends?
Meghan’s romantic comedy writing is the best in this business, I don’t think I laugh as often or as hard at any other books in this genre. I always think she can never top the last book she released but she always manages it and Earn Your Extra Credit was no different. The forced proximity of the island, and the web of lies Stella created leant itself to hilarious scenarios, but also meant a lot of self-reflecting took place, and to be honest the plot went a lot deeper than I was expecting, creating major heartache and at time some tears. It showed the multiple layers to Stella and Romeo, diving beneath the fun flirty surface you’d seen in the previous book and within the first chapters, making them so much more real and relatable.
Brock knew he wanted Stella from the start, but also knew it would take a lot for him to convince her to see him as more than a friend. He saw the opportunity as a fake fiancé to make her realise how he could be with her, but the whole scenario also made him realise somethings about himself too. My heart ached for him in some of the situations, he was so nervous to put himself out there and not ruin the close friendship they had, but once he got the sign that Stella liked him back, that hesitant guy disappeared completely. Brock lived up to the name Romeo in every way, he was romantic, alpha, possessive and so damn hot, I need to find my own. But my favourite thing about his character was his vulnerability. He was so sensitive, he wore his heart on his sleeve, even if Stella was oblivious, the rest of the group weren’t, and the rawness of his emotions was something which made me only love him more.
Stella at the beginning seemed to be this happy go lucky girl who almost seemed to walk through life with blinkers on, unaware of things happening around her. I admired her fierce independence, her confidence, and her wit, but she had a lot of self-realisation within this book, having to face her own baggage first before even considering a relationship with Brock. When someone from her past forces her to take a step back and look at her life from another angle, it was hard to read, because it felt so real. I wanted to wrap her up in a cuddle so many times and comfort her, because how she treated herself wasn’t fair, but she needed to have the bubble around her pop so she could be truly happy.
Earn Your Extra Credit had everything I need in a romantic comedy; chemistry, humour, steam, depth, and emotion, but also the ultimate happy ending which made me genuinely tear up. I could not put this book down, laughing out loud at times when the banter and bickering became too much to keep it in. It swept you up into a whirlwind holiday romance which is much needed this time of year, but also made me almost self-reflective too once I had finished the last page. Meghan has done it again; I cannot recommend Earn Your Extra Credit enough!
I adore all of Meghan's books and her brand of comedy, and this was no exception! There were definitely some serious moments and I love how this author isn't afraid to dive into the mental health side of things, and showcase how you can't have a healthy relationship if you're not healthy yourself. I truly adore that about her. Plus this had the right amount of steam and swoon, as well as the HEAT. GOOODDAMMMN, I am loving the slow-burn, panty melting intensity this series has brought so far!
So the premise of the book is that Brock (aka Romeo) and Stella along with their mutual group of friends are going to Hawaii to celebrate Greer & Arlo's engagement/marriage. Stella and Romeo used to be super close, and truly connected on a whole other level, until a misunderstanding derailed their entire friendship. Now they can barley get along, are forced in the same spaces for days on end, and it's basically anybody's guess on who will kill the other first. The only problem? Stella has no clue what went wrong with their friendship. One minute he was her person, and the next, Romeo just cut her out of his life like she was nothing. And quite honestly, pissed off Romeo is a SAVAGE. *MY* feelings were hurt at times and I wasn't even the on he was mad at! But everything is about to change when Stella (with the help of alcohol, and a truly misguided attempt to do the right thing) blurts out that her and Romeo are secretly in love and engaged, but are keeping their relationship on the downlow so they don't spoil Greer & Arlo's big day. But can these two patch up the friendship they once had with this lie hanging over their heads? Or will Romeo finally get his Juliet?
I truly thought this book was great! I was rolling with laughter pretty much the entire time, and my heart just hurt for Stella so much. She went through such an emotional journey to come out on the other side to be the person who was truly ready for Romeo's love, and I just love how honest and forthcoming she was about her struggles AND her want to change. I was just really impressed with her entire storyline.
Now I know this is a hot take, and with the other reviews I've read, other readers totally differ with my opinion, but quite honestly.. I didn't love Romeo. *hides in a corner.* I know, I know. Look, he was definitely swoony, and I loved how much he loved Stella. Truly, once he got over himself he was so great to her.. but it was their lack of communication that KILLED me. The whole reason he cut her out of her life just made me all ragey, especially since Stella never even knew how he felt about her. AND they never had a conversation about it! Seriously, every time they get close to resolving what went wrong with them, they are interrupted and then never continue the conversation. MADNESS I tell you! Plus, like I said above, Romeo was a savage.. and not always in the best of ways. When he was cruel, he was fucking C R U E L. And I get it, he's ego was wounded and his heart was broken, but it's not like Stella did this on purpose. And then to never talk about it when it was such a huge deal for the first 40% of the book really bothered me.
All in all, this is definitely worth the read. The comedic moments were out of this world hilarious, and the will-they-won't-they slow burn hella steam component was STELLAR. I just wish they were better at communicating with each other, and really talked more about the things that mattered.
I am really looking forward to Cora's story though! I've loved her since we were first introduced in See Me After Class, and I just know she's going to be a hoot!
**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions.**
After reading (or rather listening to) See Me After Class, I knew I wanted more from that world. These teachers were hilarious and had so much potential. I fell in love with the Grump-Sunshine in Arlo and Greer and couldn't wait for more. Earn Your Extra Credit is Stella and Romeo, aka Brock's story. They are fellow teachers, but these are all standalones within a series and you DO NOT have to read the other book(s) to appreciate each of their stories. Stella and Brock have had a great friendship, but Brock wants more. He just doesn't know how to step over that line. When he attempts to take her out on a date, it's one big misunderstanding and does not play out how he imagined. It ends up being their downfall and now they aren't even friends. But when their two best friends are tying the not in Maui and they both have to be there, they have to learn to play nice. But how they end up "playing nice" is beyond anything they could even imagine.
What ensues is some fake relationship, frenemies to fake lovers and friends to lovers and it is hilarious, fun, entertaining, frustrating and filled with so many misunderstandings that you'll want to strangle the characters. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Meghan Quinn brings the laughs, but she also brings the serious mixed with that. We get to understand a little bit of why Stella is the way she is and why she never looked at Romeo as more than a friend. I always saw her and her sassy ways, but we got to see a vulnerable side too, especially when it came to her father. We also get to see a very patient man in Brock and how his love for Stella was so kind. He may have been short and rude to her at the beginning, but I saw through that within mere minutes. He ends up being one hot and sexy alpha and I don't know how Stella could've misunderstood anything coming from him. YOWZA! I just wish these characters would've wizened up earlier so we could've seen how magical there were together in a REAL relationship.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and it may have been because I got to listen to the audio. Erin Mallon kills it every time she portrays a sassy and funny female romcom lead and this was no different. And Sebastian York? Let's just say his performance is the perfect alpha for Brock/Romeo. He really brought him alive and made me love him that much more. Meghan Quinn has created a pretty special teacher world and I'm so glad I'm here for it. The characters are funny. The chemistry is off the charts. The pile of misunderstandings could've been lessened, but the pranks and the laughs kind of balanced some of that out for me.
If you're looking for a book that will take you away (to Maui for half the story), will have you laughing and enjoying all the friendships of each supporting character, you've landed on the book (and series). As a collective, this group of friends is pretty special and I will wait for each book and their coupledom. They have me laughing out loud and enjoying life, even with all it's ups and downs. And if you have the chance to get the audio of this one, I think it's well worth it. It made it that much more enjoyable and fun, especially during some of the scenes with pranks or more uncomfortable scenes with father/daughter. Hold on tight and enjoy!
I was so excited to read this book after loving See Me After Class! This book has everything, more hilarious pranks, off the charts steam, amazing chemistry, sexual tension, character growth and love! There’s a snorkeling scene that had me cackling! So damn funny and so many great lines. I’m also craving pop-tarts now. I loved seeing Arlo and Greer tie the knot and get their hea. Stella and Romeo are perfect for each other but their road to happiness is full of hilarious escapades, tender moments, lots of steam, misunderstandings, personal growth and acceptance, and so much more! This is one of my favorite books of 2021!
Loved it. Loved it once I really got into it. Typical Meghan Quinn crazy humor, and my my, some really steamy scenes!
Did the characters drive me crazy? Of course they did. Yes, 29 year old Stella sometimes acted with the maturity of a teenager (even though it was funny at times), and god , Romeo/Brock, please speak up and tell Stella what you're thinking! These two had an awful time communicating their feelings, and if it wasn't for their friends I'm not sure they would've ever sorted out their stuff.
Yes, I got a wee bit frustrated with them (If they would only sit down and Talk!), but that frustration turned to joy as they made progress in their relationship. And them getting there was kind of hot!
What was unusual in this story (for me) was that you have the hero pining for the heroine. And the heroine kind of being clueless to how he felt about her. I don't know what it was about Brock and Stella, but their relationship and issues sometimes brought tears to my eyes. I really enjoyed them as a couple (even though I felt like screaming 'Wake up!' at them a time or two), I enjoyed their group of teacher friends from previous books (Arlo and Greer, Gunner and Lindsey, crazy Keiko, and Cora), and omg did I enjoy Stella's 'grand gesture' for Brock at the end. Now bring on Cora's story please with the mysterious Pike Greyson!
(ARC Review) Earn Your Extra Credit is the laugh out loud follow up to See Me After Class. In this one, the teachers and friends are in Hawaii for the wedding of Arlo and Greer.
Stella gets tanked the first night of vacation and is shocked to run into her father, who announces he’s engaged to a woman only two years older than her. His fiancé used to bully Stella in high school, and when she seems to be up to old tricks, Stella blurts out that she’s engaged too to save face.
She coerces her friend Romeo into pretending to be her fake fiancé, even though it seems like Romeo can’t stand her recently. Romeo has long had feelings for Stella, but after a failed attempt at dating her where Stella didn’t realize they were on a date, he’s put up his guard around her.
They have to pretend to be in love as they go on various excursions and dinners, all while Romeo’s fighting his feelings for her and Stella is too caught up in her family drama to realize Romeo’s not actually faking it.
Romeo was so sweet to go along with Stella’s tricks, even if it was hurting him. He was patient, loyal, and tried so hard to protect his soft heart. Did I want to throw my kindle at how oblivious Stella is? Sure! Time and time again she ignored everyone else’s feelings and only cared about herself to the extent it was hard to believe someone could be that emotionally blind.
Though it does have resemblance to See Me After Class in general vibes and pranks, I thought this one was even funnier. I laughed out loud frequently, it just had that great Meghan Quinn humor that feels so unique to her. It was also super steamy and it’s always a joy to see our old friends, including some of the Bobbies. Overall I really enjoyed this! It made me so happy while reading.
**an early version which I read had a phrase I thought to be considered outdated and offensive, the author has since removed it from the book so I have removed that portion of the review since it is no longer relevent
