This book is incredible! I work in community sexual health promotion and so often, sexual health or sexuality resources that are for people living with disabilities are clinical, unsexy and condescending. The Handi Book places people with disabilities in the position of the storyteller and in charge of the narrative, something that is still unfortunately uncommon in today's society. All of the contributors to this book highlight to the reader the MANY unique perspectives out there when it comes to living with a disability and how that impacts the way sexuality is experienced. While the Handi Book doesn't sugarcoat the difficulties and discrimination people living with a disability face, it does something that even in 2021 still feels radical, even though it shouldn't: it shows people living with disability as sexual, powerful and engaged in pleasure. The design of the book is also crisp, sophisticated and engaging with gorgeous illustrations.
When I found out I could help support the research and development of the first sex toy designed for people with disabilities by buying a book on sex and disability I quickly hit buy now. This collection of stories paints an accurate picture of what it’s like to be a person with a disability and navigating this world as a sexual being often not being acknowledged as one. I have recommended this book to a lot of people as necessary reading.
Astounded at the quality. I have dyslexia, the font and paragraph structure made it much easier to read for me. Big print, good line spacing. I normally struggle to read, and reading is daunting and i procrastinate reading - i had a peek through and for the first time in many years i actually was excited to read a book.
There are pictures of beautiful people, there are amazing artworks with deep meanings regarding disability, there are factual and emotional recounts of positive and negative experiences.
I was so shocked to see even my disability, gender, sexuality, and ethnicity given representation in this book. I wasn't expecting it and it was great to see and learn about other people with disabilities.
It displays names, pronouns, sexuality, genders, disabilities, locations, portraits and illustrations of many different people. It is brightly colored and has many different topics - it's not just for disabled people but also the non disabled people around us.
I'm going to recommend it to my sex therapist and my psychologist and my EDS-specializing physiotherapist. I'm sad it hasn't had the coverage and amazing views that it deserves because it's not only well priced(i got it for free with purchase of a Get Bump'n Joystick disability sex aid) but it's just Chockers with good stuff and will help many people.

This is a lovely and unique book. It isn't about love, lust and disability in technique. It is about people with various disabilities and how they perceive themselves as sexual beings in a world that sometimes directly or indirectly makes them feel excluded. Anyone, disabled or not, can read this book and truly gain something from the material, but to me it feels like an ideal book for a young adult audience, even with the fact that the focus is on adult topics. I personally am an older adult with disabilities of my own, married to an older adult with disabilities separate from mine. I will likely pass this book onto my adult daughter who has chronic illnesses of her own and maybe in a couple of years to my teenaged son who is able bodied.
On a side note, the people responsible for this book are working on disability inclusive adult novelties (which is about the cleanest way I can phrase that), and I think that's awesome. Their website is thatshandi.co
This book is an essential, critical read for anyone curious about disability and/or sexuality. It is a rare offering that gives us a glimpse into disabled sex in a way that has never been done before. The stories will shine a light on things so many of us haven't ever thought about, while also giving disabled people who are looking for something that speaks to their experiences a place to call home. Getting this book will change your worldview, and that is an amazing gift.
This book is a must read for anyone in the disabled community and their allies who want to see themselves represented and hear stories like their own. And for any able bodied people who want to learn more about the intersection of sexuality and disability.
