Fierce Cowboy Wolf by Kait Ballenger
Book 4 of the Sever Range Shifters series. Wolf pack shifter romance. Can be read as a stand-alone but better as part of the series.
Sierra has been training as a warrior since she was a child. When the Council of Elders declined her final authorization because she has no mate, Maverick offers an option that will change both their lives.

A complicated pack bureaucratic adventure.
Includes: “for the good of the pack” sacrifice; friends to lovers troupe with a few steamy sex scenes, betrayal with a traitor in their midst suspense, political concerns from multiple factors, and a long ago loss that’s complicated with levels of guilt.
So much to overcome, but HEA guaranteed.

Engulfing detail and epic storyline. It was nice to have the cameo appearances of the couples from the previous stories.

Excerpt:
“You’re a safe choice for me, someone I can trust to have honorable intentions. We may not see eye to eye all the time and you may be a total grump, but I know you won’t hurt me.”
Him? A grump? He quirked a brow. No one had ever dared call him grumpy before…
And of course, he wouldn’t hurt her, but him? A safe choice?
No one had ever dared consider him a safe anything.”
Excerpt from Fierce Cowboy Wolf by Kait Ballenger

I received a copy of this from NetGalley.

Sierra worked hard to become the first female elite warrior for the grey wolf pack but she was denied by the council because she doesn't have a mate.

Maverick needs the council to comply with his wishes in order to do what he needs to do. But he never expected to have feelings for another woman after his mate died but here he is about to be mated to Sierra even if he only wants a business arrangement.

Their mating started out as a mutually beneficial arrangement but when Sierra asks him to tutor her in the art of all things sexual, it's hard for him to keep feelings out of the mix.

Sierra is a fierce woman and I loved that about her. She's been in love with Maverick for ages and was upset when he didn't pick her to be his mate and instead picked another female years earlier. I liked that she found out why but that didn't change the fact that Maverick is a different guy than the friend she had when they were younger. But as they get closer she gets glimpses of the boy she knew and knows that he still has feelings for her but is scared to love her which melted my heart. These two had a lot of get through in order to be a real mated couple.

On top of everything else these two are dealing with they also have to contend with someone trying to kill Maverick. I really liked the storyline and watching it unfold as we find out who was behind the attempt on his life and why. I had no idea what was really going on which was fun. This might have started out as a marriage of convenience but as time went on, they both had to admit that they loved each other but watching the trouble they had in order to get there was sad.

Disclosure: I was sent a free e-ARC via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I absolutely LOVE this series. This one is full of pack politics (which I disagree with) that have impacted Maverick's and Sierra's HEA. Of course in the midst of trials that the pack faces Sierra gets to prove herself. The best part for me was watching Maverick and Sierra repair their love for each other and try to make a go at it.

*Mild spoiler warning*

I'm very middle of the road on how I feel about this book. There were some things I liked a lot, some things I didn't like at all, some things I thought I'd hate that turned out to be appreciable instead, and some things I thought I'd love but Ballenger managed to sully. That's a mixed bag of feelings not easy to get on paper.

I guess the best I can do is take them one at a time, even if some of them overlap. I liked Sierra a lot. I liked that she was independent, forward thinking, and willing to pursue her own desires. I like watching strong men realize a woman is their emotional salvation, as Maverick eventually did. It's one of those 'Yes, it's problematic but it ticks my sexy buttons' sort of things. I liked that the sex didn't get all dominant and submissive, undermining Sierra's right to her strength, as was really popular in romance for a while.

I disliked that, even if Ballenger was willing to set aside many of the icky tropes so common in romance, she wasn't willing to set aside the expectation of virginity one. She did try to give reasons Sierra was still a virgin well past the age one would expect it. But it still felt like a 'qualifier of female purity' line that she wasn't willing to cross.

And as this plot point played out, it came to a scene where Sierra embarrassingly admitted her virginity to Maverick and asked him to teach her to pleasure a man. And I wanted to DNF the book right there. I thought, "Shit, she's going to play the ingénue (which doesn't fit her character at all) and I'm going to have to sit through all the trainee sex while Maverick goes all alpha dominant in the bedroom and teaches her about her own body." I hate that. But Ballenger surprised me. She didn't take the well worn and predictable path. Instead, Maverick refused and Sierra stepped up and negotiated for her desires. She knew her body, knew what she wanted, and refused to be denied her just rewards. I liked this.

I liked that throughout the book Sierra championed for women's rights and Maverick was in support of them. I disliked that when he finally managed to push through all the equal rights changes the pack needed to bring them into the modern age, it was described through Sierra's thoughts as:
Sierra cradled the pile of papers in her hands, staring down at them in awe before she glanced back up at him, tears pouring down her face. He'd done it. He'd placed her wants, her needs, and desires before all other duty and kept his promise.

I mean, woo-hoo for social equality. But I'd have appreciated if he'd passed all the reforms because he thought it was best for the pack or believed in them himself. Instead, he just gave his wife what she wanted in order to get her to forgive him for a past transgression. It seriously undermined the validity of the changes, or at least his deserved virtue for making them.

I liked that Sierra stood up for the idea of women being more than breeders and put her career first. But I disliked that Ballenger then ended the book with her pregnant, which back-pedaled the idea entirely. Sierra can claim she and women are good for more than popping out babies, but apparently the reader can't be trusted to recognize a happy ending if it doesn't involve said babies.

I liked the easily readable writing. But I grew to hate the "cowboy" and "warrior" titles. It felt really REALLY forced, frequently dropped in whenever Ballenger wanted to evoke the ascetic of a cowboy but too often not actually relevant to the scene. Here's an example:
Her own eyes flashed to her wolf as she bared her teeth and let out a snarl of her own. She wasn't intimidated by him in the least. "This is my fight. Not yours. Cowboy or not, you're not leaving me standing here in you dust as you ride off into the fucking sunset. We do this together or don't do this at all."

The problem is that this was a scene where they'd just discovered who the villain was and he'd instructed another wolf to protect her while he went to kill the bad guy. What does that have to do with cowboy? "Pack-leader or not" would have fit the context, "Alpha wolf or not" would have made sense, even "Husband or not" would have matched the scene. But cowboy didn't. I can't even make the reference to riding into the sunset bring it into relevance.

And this happened over and over again, "cowboy" being dropped in to remind the reader that Maverick is apparently a cowboy (as if the constant readjusting of Stetsons or mention of cowboy boots or ranch-work wasn't enough). And maybe it wasn't, since what Maverick was was a werewolf pack-leader who owned a ranch. Giving him the cowboy title too and trying to make it dominant felt like Ballenger was sticking a name-tag to his chest and kept instructing the reader to look at it instead of the actual character development. What it felt like was that Ballenger had a note to remind herself to drop the word in every 25 pages or so to make the title of the book relevant. Similarly, Maverick's random use of "warrior" to address Sierra lost meaning after a while.

All in all, the mixed feelings on this book drops it right in the middle of liked and disliked for me. This was the first Ballenger book I've read (which means I've not read the rest of this series, despite this being a 4th book). I think I'll give her another change, gather a little more data before I decide how I feel about her books in general.

Sierra Cavanaugh has been training to be an Elite Warrior, a female hasn't held, and she needs the Elder Council's approval. The letter from them informing her that they declined her. Sierra decides to take it up with the Packleader, Maverick Grey.

Maverick has always done what is best for the pack, including following orders to marry Rose, whom he blames himself for her death. Mav has convinced himself that it's safer for all that he doesn't choose another mate.

So no one is as surprised as Mav, when Sierra finds him to give him a piece of her mind and he proposes, which she immediately declines. There has been pressure on him to find a mate, and Sierra's application hedges on finding a mate. In the midst of Sierra explaining why she doesn't want to marry him, an attempt on Mav's life is made.

It's not until Sierra's friend, Dakota, questions Sierra's frame of mind for saying no and offers her another perspective. From Dakota's point of view, there are many pluses and comes up with a solution for Sierra, to get a happy after.

After saying, yes, to Mav, Sierra's plan is simple she needs his help and since it's a marriage of convenience he shouldn't mind that the outcome of this help takes him out of the picture. Except Mav doesn't like it one bit and decides to make a plan of his own.

The wedding must go on, all while the pack seeks to find who it is that wants to take Maverick out.

The chemistry between these two is perfect! Mav is the broody loner that keeps to himself and has a few secrets. He believes his leadership is defined by putting his own happiness last and to risk that puts the pack in danger. How he's kept the pack safe has lead to others referring to him as a monster. Sierra has loved him since their youth. She is tough and knows what she wants in a mate, most of all his love. Sierra believes that she can heal him until she stumbles across a deep secret grief. I liked how Sierra faced the situation head-on that she had to love Mav for all of his parts and that meant he may never love her the same way. She sought a new path for Mav's benefit, which lead Maverick to come to new realizations.

I wanted to shake both of them because it was obvious how much they felt for one another despite all the obstacles they each put in the way. The scenes where Sierra and her friends planning for the wedding were funny. Sierra's horse, Randy, appropriately named, and her pet chicken, Elvis were loads of laughs. This book has loads of humor and will have you rooting for Maverick and Sierra. Reading this book had me believing in wolf shifters and their world!

I requested and received an ARC from NetGalley via Sourcebooks Casablanca and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.

Wicked Cowboy Wolf is the 4th book in the Seven Range Shifters series by Kait Ballenger and while it could be read as a stand alone, it’s better read as the 4th book in the series because we see the hero and heroine through the whole series making their HEA better when they finally get it.

Maverick is the grumpy packmaster of the Grey Wolf pack and Sierra is the first she-wolf trying to be apart of the warriors team who protect the pack. But it’s hard for a female to hold the position because the old school wolf Council members still think a she-wolf’s place is mating and having pups.

In Wicked Cowboy Wolf we finally get the whole story of why Maverick is so grumpy. Being packmaster is hard and having been told over and over that pack comes before anyone, even a wife or mate has taken a toll on him. He believes he doesn’t deserve to be happy in his personal life when all he really wants is one sexy warrior, she-wolf.

After the Council rejecting Sierra’s application to a be warrior because she’s not mated, and shooting down Maverick’s idea to renew an alliance with the Execution Underground, the packmaster pitches the idea of a marry of convince. Sierra is not on board at first, she wants a real matting/marriage some day and doesn’t want a loveless arrangement with anyone, especially Maverick.

Wicked Cowboy Wolf is a mix of second chance love, friends to lovers, suspense (oh did I  mention there’s a traitor within the pack trying to kill Maverrick and possibly Sierra?) and a funny rooster named Elvis and if that’s not enough there’s a randy horse named Randy. If you’re into shifters, cowboys and or strong heroines who love grumpy alphas then pick up a copy of Wicked Cowboy Wolf! If you’ve not started the Seven Range Shifters series by Kait Ballenger then start with the first book, Cowboy Wolf Trouble.

Since she was young Sierra Cavanaugh wanted only two things, the chance to be an elite warrior for the pack, and Maverick Grey. But change comes slow and the pack elders aren't ready for a femaile warrior. And when given the chance, Maverick chose someone else.

As Packmaster of the Grey Wolf pack Maverick has known that his life and his choices are not his own. His life belongs to the pack. Years ago he was forced by expectation, circumstance and the good of the pack to forgo his desires. He's closed himself off deciding it's better to be alone. Yet when attempt is made on his life, it's Sierra who steps in to save him. The Elder's may not think she's capable of being a warrior, but with the possibility of a traitor in their midst, she's not about to leave Maverick unprotected. Maverick isn't one that will take well, to being protected, but he's also not ready to push sierra away. In fact, if he plays it right, he just might have the chance to keep her.

Sierra is a strong willed woman. She knows what she wants and isn't afraid to go after it. She doesn't take anything from anyone, Maverick is the typical alpha, carrying the weight of the pack on his shoulders. He's tired of his responsibility, he wants something for himself. The attraction between Sierra and Maverick is undeniable. Their constant headbutting was more entertaining than annoying. I loved Sierra's strength and determination. I've been a fan of this series since the beginning and this latest installment didn't disappoint. While it can be read as a stand alone, the background story strings will be more meaningful if you read the earlier books. They'll be well worth your time.

What's not to like about hot cowboys? Or hunky shapeshifters? So although I hadn't read anything of Kait, I figured this story would be right up my alley, since it is about a shapeshifting cowboy.

And indeed, it is a very nice read. Maverick is one intense pack leader and Sierra is a feisty warrior. Since this book is the fourth in the seven Range shifters, I probably missed some of the pack dynamics, but it didn't bother me.

Kait creates a wonderful story full of suspense and banter. Sierra is determined to be an elite warrior, but the elders have an archaic opinion that women never can be warriors. Maverick has always put the pack needs before his own. But now the elders are pressuring him into taking a new wife and creating an heir. His solution is simple: he proposes a convenience marriage to Sierra, who needs to be married to be considered a warrior by the elders.

But Maverick doesn't know that Sierra was devastated years ago, when he took Rose to be his mate. Because Sierra and Maverick had been best friends and Sierra secretly had a crush on Maverick. Still holding a grudge, Sierra seems to condemn all Maverick's actions and decisions. So, when Sierra declines, Maverick tricks her into marriage. So, now he must face her wrath, despite the sparks flying between them. But maybe Sierra doesn't even get a chance to kill Maverick herself, since there seems to be someone hell bend to murder the pack leader. Well, not on Sierra's watch, since she wants those honors to herself. A fast paced story, about independent women, who stand up for their rights and their silent champions, who want to help them succeed.

Great read, four out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.

Firstly, I would like to say I'm a fairly independent strong women. I own my own business and it's an extremely male dominated field. Both sides of my business is. I'm not dissing strong females.

I like men to be a bit rough around the edges and cavemanish (sorry not sorry) call me super old fashion or weird. Whatever 🤷‍♀️

Maverick was great. My heart broke for him. Roughish cavemanish wolf shifter cowboy. How can you go wrong? You can't. The cover is perfect. Maverick was perfect.

I liked Sierra a lot. I liked that she is a strong independent women with her own goals that didn't waver when the man she loved was thrown into the mix. I liked that she was still very feminine at the same time as being a badass. I like to see both sides in female leads.

AND there was sex in the book! Yeah I said it! I loved Jared's book but I was really hoping for a seen in it like Colts book had. Ballenger did not disappoint in this one.

Sierra was in charge in one seen but didn't make Maverick look weak at the same time. For me, if your going to have a women be in charge I like the man to keep his manliness. Im all for the strong female leads but at the same time I like my men to be a bit on the cavemanish side. Again sorry not sorry. 🤷‍♀️ i like what I like. I thought Ballenger did a great job with it.

With that being said I felt it was a bit heavy on the I am female hear me roar but I get that was a big part of the book. Over all I really enjoyed it and would recommend it.

I think it had a decent combination of masculine male and strong female pull to it. If that even makes sense. I haven't had any caffeine today and I've got a good size headache going on. 🥴

Another wolf-shifter meets his match in Kait Ballenger’s Fierce Cowboy Wolf! With a strong heroine with lots to prove and a grumpy Packmaster who is convinced that love will make him weak, this best friend’s sister/marriage of convenience/unrequited love story was another great read in the Seven Range Shifters series.

Sierra and Maverick had to work hard to get their happy ever after. There was so much in their way, from pack politics to previous heartaches and breaks, not to mention the assassination threat and the tenuous relationship with the Execution Underground. I did get a bit frustrated with Maverick, it took him way too long for my liking for him to step up and do the right thing - which ultimately was the best thing for the pack. I loved that Sierra never settled, she made tough decisions and demanded the respect and relationship she deserved. There was no lack of heat and steam between these two and I loved Sierra’s list and how that played into their story.

One of the things I enjoy about this series is all the other characters that come into play. I loved the strong group of women who are demanding equal recognition as Elite Warriors as well as Sierra’s core group of girlfriends who take as much delight in supporting her as they do driving her crazy (bridal gown shopping, anyone?) Mavericks core group in the pack are always there with the reality checks he needs as well as bringing some well-timed humor and support.

This book can easily be read as a standalone, but I think it would be more fun to read the series from the beginning to understand some of the character dynamics better. This is what I would consider a darker, more intense shifter romance, with plenty of action and a romance that has to go all ten rounds to be won. Overall, this was a good read but might not work for those who like their romances on the lighter side.

I received an advance reader copy from the publisher via NetGalley which I voluntarily reviewed.

Fierce Cowboy Wolf by Kait Ballenger is the fourth book in the Seven Range Shifters series. What a fun book to read. Each book can be read as a stand alone story, but to fully enjoy this world created by Ballenger, you need to read from the beginning of the series.

The skill of the author to create a world filled with such detail and ceremony makes me wonder if it's really make believe or not. Fierce is the story of Sierra and Maverick. The current packmaster and his best friend's younger sister. But the story is so much more than just about these two characters.

The series is filled with intrigue, deception, power plays as well as love, family and struggles. Ballenger has a way of creating characters that are so realistic with their personality quirks, their wit and their internal growth and struggles. Each book has the core characters we've been introduced from the earlier books as well as characters who hopefully will be getting their own stories in future books.

If you enjoy a good story, with shape-shifting wolves as the main characters, you will enjoy this series. I received a copy of this book from net galley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed are my own and I truly recommend this series and this author to those who enjoy paranormal stories.

This is book 4 in the Seven Range Shifters series and it could be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading this series in order to get a better experience with it. Sierra has trained her whole life to become a warrior for her pack. And once she is finally nominated, she just needs the council to approve her nomination. But they won't approve her without her having a mate. Maverick has accepted that he will live his life alone. And now he is in negotiations with the Seven Range clans and needs a warrior. This is the chance they both have been waiting for. But can they learn to work together not only for the good of the clans but for the things they both need?

I loved how their relationship came about. Yes, they both need something in order to bring not only the good of the pack but what they need to be happy as well. They have this chemistry that I wasn't expecting but really loved. But they also aren't afraid to put the work in and work towards the relationship they want. This book is not just about the romance though! There is action and suspense and even humor involved in it. I really enjoyed it and loved how everything came together!

The fourth book in the Seven Range Shifters series. It truly helps to understand the complicated dynamics of this story if you read the others in order before you read this book. This is Maverick and Sierra's story. They have a very long convoluted backstory with Maverick unable to acknowledge his love for Sierra because of pack politics. This sets him off on a path where he withdraws into himself and loses who he truly is. Sierra, meanwhile is rising up and discovering her true value in the pack.

This is a wonderful story of growth and female empowerment in a male dominated world. The characters are well developed and intriguing. The secondary characters play a strong role in this story so it does help to read the previous books. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

Received as an ARC from Netgalley and Sourcebooks. Thank you so much.

This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.

Wow, lots of drama and action in this one! I really felt for Sierra who had to work twice as hard as the men at the same job just to be taken seriously and then not even appreciated. When she was turned down from the job that she deserved and Maverick was being force to find another mate, he thought it would be advantageous to join forces and get married. Unfortunately, it was still all his way and he really was not being fair to Sierra.

I loved that she had the strength to stick to her convictions in the end, and Maverick really understood what life would be like without her. Which lead to a great HEA, and totally redeemed Maverick!

Will definitely be looking for more books by this author!

Duty and protecting the pack are all that Packmaster Maverick Grey lives for. Sierra has loved Mav all her life but when he married another she puts her energy into becoming a warrior of the first order. Now Maverick is a widower and Sierra has been put in to become an elite warrior. When the elders deny her advancement because she is unmated they put together a “fake marriage” plan. But as any good story goes if you want to make God laugh make plans. I at times wanted to box both their ears for idiocy above and beyond but ultimately loved this tale.

Wolf shifter Sierra wants to be the first female elite warrior but the elder council says that she needs to be married first. Packmaster Maverick offers to marry her in name only. Sierra has loved him all her life so she agrees. If that wasn't enough drama someone is trying to kill Maverick. Action packed, steamy, shifter romance.

Sierra, a wolf shifter, has worked her whole life to become the first female in the elite warriors team. The ruling council says she must find a mate first. Maverick is the alpha of the Grey Wolves pack and nominated Sierra for the elite warrior. The council thinks Maverick need to be ensuring his heritage lives on. Maverick then decides to propose to Sierra, she’ll become a warrior and he’ll have the council off his back. But someone is out to kill Maverick and they figure it’s someone close to them. Between finding the enemy and keeping Sierra at a distance, Maverick could lose the person he cares the most about.

It took me a little bit to get into the story but once I did, I couldn’t stop reading. Action, mystery, and a little sex. If my review doesn’t make sense I’m sorry. This was hard to review, for me, because I didn’t want any spoilers.

Sierra Cavanaugh has worked hard for years to become an elite warrior.  Thanks to training in the wolf pack and the special team of the human army, she is as strong and deadly as any man and most wolves. Unfortunately the Elders are stuck in their ways and are against her.

She also has another reason for wanting to be the best,  but doesn't want to admit that even to herself.

Packmaster Maverick Grey puts the welfare of the pack above everything and anyone else.  It's not easy trying to keep enemies at bay and the pack safe.  Several treaties that are in negotiations are at risk.  The Elders are being stubborn as usual, and add conditions of their own.

Tension and emotions run high in this paranormal romance.  There is a lot of danger and some steamy scenes.  You will easily get involved with our characters lives and the story itself is really great fun.

This is part of a series that is better read in order,  but you can still enjoy each book on it's own.  I will definitely be reading the whole series.

I loved it.

This is the fourth book in the Seven Range Shifters series, I have a confession to make I haven't read the previous books, I just took one look at this cover and clicked to read. Shallow much?!

I am sure not having not read the previous books means, I have missed out on a lot of background with Maverick and Sierra, I get the feeling the tension between these two has been brewing for some time. Maverick Grey is the pack master of the seven ranges clan. entering in to treaty negotiations with other clans he needs someone at his back and there is no-one better than Sierra Cavanaugh first female elite warrior in Grey Wolf history. However for her to take the position she has to find a mate, so Maverick decides the only solution is to take her as his own and kill two birds with one stone. We can see from the outset that both their wolves are attracted to each other, which makes for entertaining reading. Both their human counterparts are proud, strong and totally self sufficient, having to learn and trust each other is definitely a learning curve. The chemistry keeps the book interesting and I found I was routing for their relationship to work out. I really enjoyed the book, I just didn't love it.

Thank you to Netgalley and SOURCEBOOKS Casablanca for an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

This is the fourth book in the Seven Range Shifters series and my new favorite! This is the story of Sierra Cavanaugh and Packmaster Maverick Grey. Sierra has worked her whole life to become the first female elite warrior in Grey Wolf history. When her nomination finally put forward for approval it is denied by the traditional council because she is an unmated female.
Maverick offers a solution to this problem by telling Sierra that he will claim her. Sierra has been in love with Maverick for many years, so this proposition is both a blessing and a curse. Sierra must decide if she is willing to sacrifice one dream for another. She realizes that her decision could impact the females of the pack for years to come.
The pack is an untenable situation that must be resolved for the well-being of all of the pack members. There are assassins, traitors, and more that combine to make this a fast-paced exciting read. I greatly enjoyed the love story between Sierra and Maverick. The pace of the book is excellent and the dialogue is amusing. Overall, this is a great book that I would highly recommend.

I was provided a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review of the book.

Sierra and Maverick made a good couple together (although it took a little to sort through old hurts & foolishness). they grew up together (he being her brother's best friend) but when the time came that he took over the pack and was required to mate he was "advised" to choose another by her father & other elders. he's been a widower now for 5 years and believes that as packmaster he can't have love. when efforts to bring more modern (and equality) practices brings pressure for both to find mates, opportunity arises but will the sparks that still flow between them burn bright and steady or flame out? there was definite chemistry btwn the two characters (though the book wasn't quite as spicy as I expected based upon early interactions & that sexy cover) and they balanced each other out when they weren't fretting or fighting their feelings. flashbacks to when they were young gave nice insight and added to the story depth, revelations of pack hierarchy secret traditions were interesting and the danger plot while not overly large had it's own surprises. overall this was a good read.
