When one of their own is threatened—the nation’s #1 air-crash investigation team enters a race to survive.
An airliner downed on a Pacific atoll. A CIA covert strike team sent in to “clean it up.” An old enemy seeks revenge. This time, the NTSB’s autistic air-crash investigator, Miranda Chase, and her team are in the crosshairs. The action races around the globe as US military airbases become shooting galleries and their lives are placed on the line.
And hidden from sight? A treacherous plan to grab political power and start a new war with Russia in the Middle East. Only Miranda’s team stands in their way, if they can survive.
USA Today and Amazon #1 Bestseller M. L. “Matt” Buchman started writing on a flight south from Japan to ride his bicycle across the Australian Outback. Just part of a solo around-the-world trip that ultimately launched his writing career.
From the very beginning, his powerful female heroines insisted on putting character first, then a great adventure. He’s since written over 60 action-adventure thrillers and military romantic suspense novels. And just for the fun of it: 100 short stories, and a fast-growing pile of read-by-author audiobooks.
Booklist says: 3x “Top 10 of the Year.” PW says: “Tom Clancy fans open to a strong female lead will clamor for more.” His fans say: “I want more now…of everything.” That his characters are even more insistent than his fans is a hoot. As a 30-year project manager with a geophysics degree who has designed and built houses, flown and jumped out of planes, and solo-sailed a 50’ ketch, he is awed by what is possible. As Miranda Chase’s team has pulled together over the course of this marvelous series, each person that has joined has occupied a specific and necessary niche.
Necessary for the team to function at its incredibly high peak of capability, and necessary for Miranda to be able to manage her world. She needs every person in their proper place so that she can concentrate on why the downed aircraft in front of her abruptly stopped being in its proper place – flying safely through the sky.
But in Havoc, the seventh book in this awesome series, one of the key members of Miranda’s team has gone, not exactly walkabout, as much as Australian Holly Hunter wishes she truly were.
Holly was on her way to tie up the loose ends left by the deaths of her parents in remote Tenant Creek, a tiny town in the middle of Australia’s Northern Territory. The place that Holly left at 16, half a lifetime ago, and tried never to look back at through her military career in her country’s special forces and her secondment from the Australian TSB to Miranda’s team in the US NTSB.
Holly has always occupied the “lancer” position in Miranda’s now-larger-than-5-man band. Holly’s the muscle and she handles security. She’s also Miranda’s truest friend in a way that neither woman has much experience with.
So the team is off-kilter and a bit off their game when Holly is away. An absence that gets extended when Holly’s flight “home” is forced to crash on a remote Pacific atoll. That crash scene is barely squared away when a high-profile crash drags Miranda and the rest of the team to Syria. It’s only after she finally reaches Australia that Holly discovers the reason for both crashes.
It’s not paranoia if someone really is out to get you. When that someone is a pissed-off, psychotic Russian elite operative who has been locked in a box for a year and is willing to start a real honest-to-badness war in order to make sure you go down, even Holly’s extreme paranoia isn’t nearly enough.
But Holly is. No matter what it takes to save Miranda and the rest of the team she calls “home”.
Escape Rating A: The plot of Havoc is a story where all of the chickens from a previous adventure in this series, Condor, all come home to roost. I’m not sure you need to have read the ENTIRE series to get into Havoc as much as I did – although it’s awesome and I don’t know why you wouldn’t – but I don’t think it would work at all to start with Havoc. In this case, to get up to speed quickly you’d need to read both the first book, Drone, and Condor before Havoc.
But the whole series is totally awesome and well worth a read. Truly.
Back to those chickens coming home to roost in this story. There are two elements of Condor that come back to haunt this time around
The first is that Miranda’s friends-with-benefits relationship with Major Jon Swift of the US Air Force Accident Investigation Board comes to an abrupt end with the shock of a Taser. Literally. Deservedly. And oh-thank-goodness finally. Back in Condor it seemed like the relationship might actually work, but Major Swift turned into Major PIA (Pain in the Ass) long before Miranda slapped him in the face early in this story. He won’t be missed by anyone. Not even Miranda.
The second, biggest and baddest of those “chickens” is the Russian Zaslon operative, Elayne Kasparak that the team beat in the earlier story. Holly turned out to be the nemesis that brought Kasparak down. Once she was captured, Holly made a deal with Miranda’s rival-turned-frenemy, CIA Director Clarissa Reese because Miranda didn’t like the idea of just killing her. No matter how much she seriously deserved it..
Kasparak was supposed to spend the rest of her life locked up in one of the CIA’s infamous Black Sites. When she learns that Kasparak has somehow managed to escape the inescapable, Holly knows that Kasparak is responsible for both recent plane crashes and that she’s gunning for Holly with everything she’s got.
Which is 10-pounds of crazy in a 5-pound sack with knives and guns pointed at everyone and everything Holly holds dear. As far as Kasparak is concerned, any collateral damage she racks up along the way is just icing on her crazycake.
As this story was going on, and the stakes just kept getting higher and higher, and I started to get a bit desperate to see what happened next, I still found myself stopping in the middle for a bit. Not because it was bad, but because it was so good and I was so caught up in it and I discovered that I cared about Holly so damn much that I couldn’t bear to read her pain.
And it just kept getting more and more painful as it goes, as we learn both about what made Holly who and what she is – and what she’ll go through to take care of everyone she has claimed as her own.
This is one where the tension just ramps up past 11 and keeps right on going. Even a bit past the end.
Not that the story of Miranda’s team has ended when the reader closes Havoc. Which left me with a terrible book hangover. I don’t merely want, I absolutely NEED to find out what happens after the end of this book. But the next book in the series, White Top, won’t be out for a month or two, and I don’t even have an ARC yet, so I’ll have to wait.
HAVOC is the seventh instalment in ML Buchman’s contemporary, adult MIRANDA CHASE NTSB military, techno-thriller series focusing on NTSB investigator Miranda Chase and her team of former and current military members.
Told form several third person perspectives HAVOC follows retired Australian Special Air Services Regiment Sergeant Holly Harper as she, and the NTSB begin an investigation into a series of plane crashes, one in which, Holly was a passenger. Heading to the Johnston Atoll, Holly calls in Miranda Chase, letting her know, that she may not survive but to begin an investigation into possible sabotage. Not only had Holly survived but our heroine quickly discovers a Russian assassin has escaped a military prison, and has set their sights on our story line heroine.
HAVOC is another comprehensive and intricate story awash in military, NTSB, and air flight jargon, some of which may require a Google search or two. ML Buchman pulls the reader into a suspenseful story of power and betrayal, vengeance and murder, in a political game of espionage, and domination between the US and Russia, instigated by the crazed mind of psychopath bent on revenge. HAVOC is a vivid, imaginative and gripping tale where the world powers, are yet again, on the brink of war.
I liked that with this book we learned more about Holly and while it wasn't good, it sort of explains her prickly exterior. I felt bad for Holly having to face her past, but glad she had a friendly person there for her, even if she might have crossed a line.
Holly's initial flight was bonkers! Only one of Miranda's team could find themselves in a situation like this and stay calm and help things not be worse. Of course that also started a domino effect, one that led Holly to come crazy places with a blast from the teams past and Holly needing to get help from a frenemy. Holly barely managed to stay ahead of things and in one instance had to place catch up, but Holly being the bad ass bitch she is, managed to figure things out and take care of business.
Some other things I liked about this one, Holly's frenemy realizing how dangerous she was. Holly realizing that the team is important to her. The team getting to witness Miranda's autism in a different way and figure out ways to help her. Miranda starting to "get" a few more sayings and emotions. And the team realizing that sometime they still need to translate Miranda speak even among themselves and she doesn't do/say things on purpose.
This book is gripping! I stayed up far too late reading it, then was frustrated because I finished it too quickly, and now I have to wait for the next one. As the 7th in the Miranda Chase series this one continues to expand on the stories of the individuals on Miranda's team. Readers may know that in Jeremy's airplane card/dice game, the Havoc helicopter represents Holly. This is Holly story-- and her life has been filled with havoc. We learn more about what made Holly the way she is as the situations in this particular book wrap up a few loose ends from previous stories in the series including encounters with old enemies and frenemies. I was not happy with how the particular book ended, however I know that there is an eighth book in the works that resolves the cliffhanger, so I can accept the uncertainty for short while longer until that book is published also. Each book can stand alone but I would recommend that readers enjoy all the books in this series. I received a free advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Be advised: this is a military political techno thriller and the language and situations reflect that. If violence or swearing offend you, this book series is not for you!
M.L. Buchman's characters are so well developed you feel like you know them. And when they're in trouble, I get that uneasy feeling like I do for my family and friends. Holly is in trouble. She's on a plane with problems, and Miranda has given her the odds. Now, the odds are in Holly's favor, but no one likes odds less than 100% success when they're on a plane in the middle of the Pacific.
And then we meet up with a problem from a previous book. A problem that doesn't like Holly. And you start to wonder........
The team that I love so much gets even tighter in this book, as Holly and Miranda and the rest go through so much to get to the other side. Hard to tell you without sharing too much, but like all the others, make sure to buy now and read as soon as possible.
And if you haven't read the others, why the heck not?? Go, do that first! The book *can* be a standalone, but why would you want it to be? Read the rest (start with Drone) so you understand Miranda herself, and how the team has come together into their own family.
Love it. Will buy the next one as soon as it hits the internet. And every other book M.L. Buchman writes.

Havoc: a political technothriller (Miranda Chase Book 7) by M. L. Buchman - 5 stars
Hooked on this series!
A devious grab for political power, a vicious, trained killer bent on revenge, and a plan to start a war shape this plot. Sabotaged planes, a strike team of mercenaries, covert emails and apparently official orders all intended to frame a political opponent drive the action from the get-go. Defenseless autistic Miranda Chase and her air-crash investigation team are caught in the middle of it--both targets and catalysts. The person behind the plot doesn't care about the destroyed planes or how many people die; he just cares about destroying another's career and wresting away her political power.
We finally learn about Holly's past, how it drives her, and how it shapes her present.
Warning 1: Contains violence (depraved) and coarse language--in particular by the trained killer seeking revenge. Warning 2: The book ends with a cliff-hanger. Warning 3: Don't start reading this book unless you have time to finish it the same day, or you'll be awake most of the night.
I was given an advance reader copy of this book and also purchased a copy. I am happy to provide this review.
*I received an ARC from the publisher to consider for review.* I've been a fan of this author since the Night Stalkers series and have carried through Firehawks and just about anything else with his name on it. I was curious but cautious with the Amanda Chase series as it wasn't a primary romance story like the others. However, I was quickly sucked in with his writing style which is detailed and vivid. While there are many technical details included, it doesn't overwhelm the reader but actually adds to the flavor of the story, bringing the world to life. Each novel adds additional layers to Amanda and her team which keep me craving more. In this chapter, we delve deeper into Holly's life, history and emotions. While one of the more closed off characters, we always knew she had depths we weren't allowed to see. After Havoc, we better know why and start to see cracks in her persona. This writer is one of a small handful where I will gladly read anything offered and put it ahead of anything else in my TBR pile. I eagerly look forward to the next installment.
For the most part, I enjoyed the story even though Miranda was given a lesser role than normal. I was pleased to learn more of Holly‘s backstory to better understand why she’s so prickly about everything. I would hope she would mellow a little bit by now but she still seems to be overly aggressive with her team. I would smack her if she was hitting me as hard as she’s always hitting Mike and Jeremy. No need for that at all.
Having said that, I think this book had the most unsatisfying ending of any book I’ve read in many, many years. All we needed was one more chapter to resolve the team discovering “Holly‘s hat“ after she was assumed dead. I would’ve loved to have read what happened next. Assuming the outcome is far different than being a part of it unfolding. I really, really hated the lack of a decent ending and resolution. At first I thought it might just be a cliffhanger and to be resolved in the next book. Unfortunately, the next book picks up some time later. I’m not that far into “White Top”, but so far no mention of her recovery.

I've been anxious to read this ever since reading the excerpt in the back of the previous story. It did not disappoint. Holly-centric story, revealing more of her background and showcasing her remarkable skills. Delicious twists, exciting action, much-desired character development. The Miranda perspective is always fascinating, and I enjoyed the ending so much that I've read it over and over. Warning to the squeamish, there is a lot of violence, and although one probably could read this as a stand-alone, this exciting tale will be much more appreciated if previous stories in the series have been consumed. As always, this author has penned an exciting tale with vivid and engaging characters that evokes global high-stakes chess games and reminds one of the exciting early Clive Cussler tales or the various incarnations of the James Bond adventures.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy to write an honest review.
I was going to title this "each one gets better and better" but that would indicate that the first books in the series are not worth reading. So instead I would say that each one gives us a different look at the main characters and this one is mainly about Holly. Still involves plane crashes and the whole team but more around Holly. These books are so realistic that I can imagine what is going on in Havoc, happening in the upper echelons of the CIA. Don't want to give anything away - but even though I know there is another book coming I had to read the last few chapters (when I was 1/2 way through the book) so that I knew what happened. Matt Buchman continues to outdo himself with technicalities, personal interaction and even love. Highly, highly recommend.
I volunteered to read and leave my honest review . I really enjoyed reading Havoc . The story is intense and intriguing . It is an outstanding techno thriller . The characters are unique and the story takes you on a heck of a rollercoaster ride . I could not put it down . I stayed up into the wee hours of the night to finish . I am impatiently waiting for the next story in the series . The Author's descriptions are spot on . I felt like I was right there in the story with Miranda's team . I highly recommend taking the time to read .
Holly's on a her way home for a family crisis, when the engine rips off the plane. Bringing attention to the flight crew, their only chance is to make a forced landing on a pacific atoll with a WW2 airstrip. Miranda and team race to accident site, hoping for survivors.
Why I started this book: Popcorn drama with the military details one of the only realistic things in the book.
Why I finished it: The exact hit that I needed. I love it when authors are consistent with their characters and story telling.
I received this book as an ARC with the promise of a review. This book is Miranda Chase #7 titled Havoc. I love these characters who form a group of NTSB investigators who solve the mystery of airplane crashes. The author does a masterful job of writing about imperfect crew members with assorted issues who bond beautifully and work together like the proverbial “well-oiled machine”. Twists are everywhere and the action is non-stop. I definitely recommend this story if you enjoy a great drama mixed with humor.
So many lives sacrificed attempting to destroy not one but two nemesis. Intrigue, lots of action, and a very real international, political backdrop as well as the intricacies of several crash sites, all of which drive the story forward. The pace is fast and unrelenting, starting at the very beginning and exploding toward the unexpected ending, that felt a bit like a cliffhanger but wasn’t. Absolutely could not put it down, a must read book in a must read series. So I highly recommend!
I received an ARC from the publisher to consider for review. Another action packed installment in the Miranda Chase series. This time we concentrate on Holly Harper, and it's nice to learn more of the backstory and get that glimpse deeper into one character. There is still all the excitement and action of the previous stories, and at times it seems the action never slows down. It is definitely one I will have to go back and read again, knowing that there will be plenty of new details I missed the first time around. Can't wait for the next one.
There wasn't as much investigating of downed air crafts as past books. I found that I was okay with that. The reason I believe is that this book was mostly Holly's book. Since she doesn't do much as far as the investigating side but more of the protect and defending side. So no it didn't surprise me that Havoc, is more action and thriller. It's a great addition to the Miranda Chase series.

Miranda and her NTSB team are called out to investigate a Congressional flight that crashed in the Middle East, close to Syria. Holly goes home to Australia when she gets the news that her parents have died. Enroute, she survives a civilian plane crash onto Johnston Atoll in the Pacific. And if that wasn’t enough, the Russian ZASLON assassin that almost killed the NTSB team in ’Condor’ escapes from a Black Site gunning for Holly and Miranda’s team.
Miranda's team this time has to work to save and protect one of their own..... Once again, M.L. Buchman delivers a fast paced and wonderful thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat and keeps you wanting more. More Miranda and more of her team.....

It is really hard for me to describe how much I love this series! Each book adds just more layers to a cast of complicated and intriguing characters. The attention to detail is awe-inspiring. It's a fast-paced page turner! I hope that this series and the adventures of Miranda continue for a long time!

Once again ML Buchman has come through with another great Miranda story, she is such an intelligent genius about airline crashes. Her team works as one. Was glad to see Jon get the heave ho. Elayne finally met her match, Could Holly really meet her maker ????What is next? I just can’t see Clarissa and the Vice President together.
I received an ARC from the publisher to consider for review
I really enjoy this series. This book was more about Holly, but the team were all there. It reads more like a science fiction story but it has good action and interaction.
Buchman has filled the Miranda Chase series with multi-dimensional characters who pull you in and make you care. Havoc fleshes out Holly’s back story, and spins you into a tale of political intrigue. Well done!
I received an ARC from the publisher to consider for review.
I have throughly enjoyed this book. It gripped me from the moment I started reading it. Some very suspenseful moments. The back story of Holly gives a deep insight to her character. Looking forward to the next book!
Holly has to return to Australia for an unknown reason at the start of the book. That's when her plane loses an engine over the Pacific and they manage to land on an atoll. That starts the rollercoaster ride.
So much evolves during this book: Miranda, and the team, and the greater arc of the series. Wonderful thrill ride. A great story and wonderful thriller.
