Baby for the Russian Boss

Rate this book
A shocking job loss, a stranger with emerald eyes, and one mind-blowing night in his bedroom.
That’s how I landed in the mafia, sworn to the most ruthless savage to ever have walked the earth.

The one time I finally open my heart, and it’s ripped from my chest by a Machiavellian billionaire.
I guess eighty-hour work weeks were safer than love.
But now I have neither, and I’m staring down at two red lines on a pregnancy test.
Positive.

Yakov Brute is a vicious bratva boss, and he’s the one responsible for the baby growing in my belly.

What’s worse is that I haven’t told him yet.
I’m too busy getting tangled up in his bedsheets.
But there are only so many nights I can spend in tortuous bliss before he notices.
To make things worse, I think I’m starting to fall for the man who ruined my life.

In the mafia, one night can be the difference between life and death,
A kiss can mean a lifetime,
And an unexpected pregnancy can be what seals my fate with the most dangerous man in the country.

Now, I belong to a ruthless mafia boss, and there’s no turning back.

I DNF'd it after about 100 pages, after the first sex scene which is quite possibly the unsexiest sex scene that I have ever read.

Also Content Warning as I mention alcohol addiction in my review and how the book seemingly uses it as comic relief.

I didn't have very high expectations or this once I saw that the author has released around 45 books since October 2020, all of them through Kindle Unlimited. A lot of the books here on Goodreads don't have blurbs so it really seemed like one of those kindle unlimited ghost writing click farm situations- where they just churn out as many books as possible to get paid- and even if it isn't, having 45 books release in such quick succession doesn't exactly scream quality.

It didn't start off too bad, the writing was decent enough until the second chapter & Melanie's first POV where she randomly starts thinking about how she's planned to not get pregnant until the end of her career (When exactly is the end of a career? Because I would assume that's retirement which seems a little late to have kids unless you earn a ton of money & can go for early retirement? I could understand waiting till you're established in your chosen career but the end of it seems a bit late?) and doesn't want to slip up & get pregnant before she's ready. But just the way it was brought up in her inner monologue just seemed really clunky and so blatantly obvious that it was setting up how she'll feel about the accidental pregnancy, but surely there was a more natural way to bring up that she wanted to prioritise her career before having kids?

It then got even more ridiculous when she gets fired on the spot for seemingly no real reason (or at least a reason you'd expect to receive a warning for), throws a tantrum & blames the security guard who was just doing his job, when it was her own fault for being late to the meeting in the first place.

Then we get a bit where it seems to imply that she might be an alcoholic but its handled in a very cavalier way so I'm not 100% certain if she actually is or if it's supposed to be who some people 'joke' about being alcoholics

“Enough with the wine,” Jennifer says, pushing the menu even further out of sight. “You drink enough already. I’ve seen your apartment.”
“It’s not that much,” I say weakly, but I know that it is. I’ve been coping with my workaholic nature by substituting genuine relaxation with an assortment of unhealthy coping mechanisms. Alcohol, caffeine, and the occasional cigarette aren’t doing my health any favors.”

and

“Jennifer scoffs. “Not only are you a workaholic, but you’re also an alcoholic.”
“I’d hardly call a single shot alcoholism.”
“Every night?”
“Wine doesn’t count.”
“I assure you, it does.”
“Well, I’ll try to take it easy, then,”

There was also this earlier line from the start of the book when she was trying to find her work ID in her bag, that adds to that 'I drink so much I could be an alcoholic, isn't it hilarious' vibe.

“I look up at him from my purse, still fishing for my only chance to make it to the meeting within the grace period. I’ve been late before, and it’s not usually a big deal, but I’m racking up minutes quicker than the empty wine bottles are piling up in my small apartment.”

Then we get the ridiculous and cliche moment where the entire bar goes quite & stops to stare & their jaw drop when Yakov walks in, and somehow Melanie and her friend know just by looking at him that he's Russian;
“I never forget a face, especially not one that looks like it was teleported from a high-security Russian prison that just so happens to double as a modeling agency.”

And later on Melanie's friend mentions
“No, I will not calm down, Melanie. You’re going home with the Russian beast?”

Now up until this point Yakov, at least in the way his dialogue has been written, seems to speak in fluent English (his accent is mentioned by Melanie at one point but isn't reflected in the writing) but now suddenly seems to not use contractions in that way that way thats so common in media.

“I paid the bill,” he says, turning away from the bathroom. “We will leave now...
My car is parked outside,” he says, pointing toward the door. “I will shelter you from the rain.”

Then we get a random and seemingly pointless discussion about if Melanie has ever had sex in a stop floor suite, I guess this is the authors attempt show he's rich and can afford the top floor?
I mean in Yakov's inner monologue he says he asks because he's trying to ease into mentioning going to the hotel (rather than his house) but he already mentioned wanting to get a room before they left the bar so surely Melanie would presume that they were going to a motel and not his house? Also Melanie's response to his question seems really random & out of place considering just a few pages before in a conversation with her friend she seemed so reserved/modest that she was denying ever watching porn, & yet now feels perfectly comfortable just announcing to a man she just met that she'd had sex in an empty classroom during college? And why would that be your response to that question?

“Have you ever had sex in a top floor suite?” I ask, trying to ease into the hotel matter.
She shakes her head. “No, but one time in college, I fucked in the classroom when nobody was there.”
At least she’s adventurous.
“Would you like to have sex in a top floor suite?” I ask.
“Is that where you live?”
“I can get a hotel,” I say. “My house is too far from here.”

And that brings us to the least sexy sex scene I've ever read & I'm just going to leave you with these quotes because they say it all really:

“I relax, only to spasm back into incredible tension. Just when I think that I can’t coil any tighter, Yakov begins clicking his tongue directly over my clit, pressing the red launch button and igniting the fuel of my orgasm.”

“He smirks as he pushes the rest of the way, reveling in my gasps and moans as he touches places that have never been touched inside of me. To have spent twenty-seven years untouched deep within my belly and then to have a complete stranger prod my insides as though it were just another regular night is both odd and fantastic.”

Prodding someone's insides really doesn't sound sexy, particularly when those insides are deep within their belly which defies basic biology & human anatomy.

“My breasts move like the ocean, slapping together as they roll back and forth over my ribcage. With each coming together, I feel stimulation in my torso, increased arousal that makes my nipples hard.”

“Yakov grabs my hair at the scalp, pulling my head back against the pillow. His expression is deadly, like a praying mantis that has its prey locked in.”

I never want to read a sex scene -thats supposed to be sexy - where someone is compared to an insect ever again.

“The rest of the night goes about how I expected it to after such an insane series of orgasms. I fall asleep almost instantly, cum still oozing out of my pussy onto the sheets. Then, I wake up in the night to pee, and Yakov is back up and rock-solid, ready to fuck the night away.”

All I could think was that she's gonna get a wicked UTI after that & while I get that the book is meant to be dark & gritty but surely there was a better description than "cum still oozing out".

Also after all of Melanie's "I have a very strict life plan for myself and have avoided having sex for 3 years because I don't want to risk a pregnancy that will though that plan off" she just completely ignores contraception, even thinking to herself that she's just so turned on she doesn't care about using anything or the consequences of not using anything. So it's not even that they got so into it & things move so quickly that they completely forgot or were too drunk to remember to use a condom, she remembers it then just goes "screw it I don't care" which seems incredibly contradictory to the way her character has been written.

And that's where I gave up on it. I found the characters annoying & 2D, they were already acting out of character purely to move the plot along which is a super lazy writing technique, and the sex was just terrible.

The book may improve but there is really nothing that's keeping me even the slightest bit interested, especially considering it's super obvious how it's going to end, and I really don't want to waste anymore of my time on the slim chance that it does improve.

Yakov is a vicious mob boss and Melanie is pregnant with his baby and once he discovers that he has no plans to ever let her go. Fast-paced read with loads of drama, suspense and twists and turns. Great characters with lots of emotion and steam. I liked it.

Baby for the Russian Boss by Bella King is a riveting romantic suspense. Readers get to know Melanie Shade and Yakov Brute. She is a shy, smart, and hardworking young woman who is down on her luck after her recent termination. He is a Bratva boss. With his half-brother, Serge, Yakov brainstorms strategies for getting intel on the Motokov Family, a rival family peddling opiate, encroaching into the Bratva territory. The brothers need an outsider to get the intel. Yakov goes to a high-end bar and notices Melanie. She intrigues him and after a night of intimacy hires her to gather the intel. A few weeks later, Melanie discovers she is pregnant. What will happen once Yakov discovers her pregnancy? Will Melanie be able to get intel on the Motokov family? Will she be safe? Will the Brute brothers be safe? Will Melanie and Yakov find happiness? To discover the answers to these questions, you must read this book.

Ms. King penned a remarkable dual prong plot—romance and suspense. The romantic prong is basically a character driven plot. Her two lead characters have a definite chemistry between them. Ms. King’s suspense plot line builds intrigue into her story. She uses the inner workings of a mob family and the threat from a rival mob family to move her story along. She uses dialog and a dual point of view to build a palpable romantic tension. Her descriptive language creates vivid scenes.

One night of fun leads to danger and an unexpected baby

Baby for the Russian Boss is the story of Melanie and Yakov. He is the head of the Brute crime family and meets Melanie in a bar one night when she is out drinking with a girl friend. Melanie has just lost her job and the sexy man she started talking to offered her a new one. But they first share a night of sexy hot passion. When she ends up pregnant with his baby Yakov finds out. He may be a hard criminal but he is not going to let her or their baby go and will do everything to keep them both safe.
This was a good story and characters. I found the book could use a good editor as there were a number of places where the details did not match or were referenced later on but never written about earlier in the story......confusing at times to say the least. But overall it was enjoyable.

I received a copy of this book and am leaving my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

Baby for the Russian Boss is not a bad story, but Melanie had too many issues for me to like her. She begins as an OCD workaholic hyped on coffee trying to get a promotion. Instead she gets fired and picks up Yakov in a bar for a one night stand. He is the ruthless head of his Mafia family. What follows is the character of Melanie being all over the place. She goes from being an overachiever to gullible in accepting a questionable job from Yakov. She gets paid a huge sum of cash, which she hides in her apartment that anyone can break into and Yakov does several times. She also is supposed to be a mature, responsible adult wanting to further her career, but yet is not on birth control. I had a hard time getting invested in what could have been a decent book because of Melanie.

The story line, plot and idea is interesting with a few twists and turns and surprising revelations but the character development and personalities just don't do it justice. Melanie was immature, impulsive and does stupid things even when asked not to and I found it hard to relate or like her especially at the end of the book when she goes charging into danger, without a plan or backup. I just did not connect with the characters and I found the relationship between Melanie and Yakov lacking and the chemistry, romance and relationship between them was not very believable and strong. At times the book was felt a bit drawn out and confusing. It was a reasonable and ok read.

An entertaining but a bit confusing Russian mafia romance. Entertaining as its filled with suspense action and drama, confusing as i find Yakob a bit emotionally detached..he is the type they refer to" far from the eyes far from the heart/thoughts" but as soon as he sees Melanie he is all hot for her again.
The day Melanie is fired she picks up a man at the bar....to only find her world spiraling out of control because of him....not only is the man a handsome brute but he is the head of the Russian Bratva.

Good 3.5 stars!

This is a cute opener mafia book of you don’t read the genre normally. If I didn’t have major hard hitting mafia books under my belt this could have been a great story! I read it really quickly, kept my interest throughout but just too light and fluffy for me. They went from indifferent to in love in literally a chapter so no build up there and the dynamics of their relationship changed quickly as well. Not the worst I’ve read, good enough for me to finish but probably my only read by this author.

I love the being but the middle was a little slow for my taste but then the end started picking back up. I was thinking that the brother was going to be the next book with the friend Jennifer. I was happy that the end had the two brothers happy but at the same time sad for the loss.

Baby For the Russian Boss

I swear I don't know who was crazier, Serge, Yakov or Melanie. At times it seemed as if Serge wanted to upstage Yakov, but he was just being kind. I felt really bad about how things went down, knowing he really loved his brother. Yakov was such a jackass throughout the book.

Fast paced read

The book progresses pretty fast but it’s a cute mafia story. I was happy yet a little like huh? When Yakov actually showed a soft side to Sergio at the end. Just a shame that he had to die, I was hoping nobody on the good side dead but he it happens. Enjoyed it.

Funny

I really enjoyed this book. It was a mafia love story but with a lot of humor. It was fun to read, with a lot of action and some amazing characters. The lead characters were so funny and so likeable. Had a great time reading it.

I’m not

Sure what Russian mafia was being put on paper here. This stuff doesn’t make sense. The sequence of events and how they played out made zero sense. Not a candidate for a second read.

***SOME MINOR SPOILERS***
I like how the MC was still pregnant when her love interest found out about the baby. The baby wasn’t a huge part of the book, but I saw enough of it to be satisfied. I am kind of concerned about her decision to run straight into danger. Overall, I enjoyed this book.

Boring

Skimmed most of it because it was all over the place. Never got better though I gave it a good try. Didn’t care about the characters and couldn’t wait for the book to be over. Couldn’t even keep their own story straight because it had a lot of errors. Skip it
